Great spot!
This was a gigantic field which sounds like it may flood in rain but it was very dry when I was there. I went a swim in the river then washed off in the cold shower on the outside of the toilet cubicles. No fresh water available

Very well maintained area. There was a security person to check permits which was great because it made the place so peaceful and safe

Huge open field campsite with lovely shallow river to have dips in.
Heaps of native birdlife (Tui, Kereru, kingfishers, shining cuckoo) and a great track through the forest to spot Pīwakawaka :)
Some internet, enough for messages.
There was a large group there (20+ adults and countless children) next to the toilet block pumping music all day and all night, but we just camped far away. They also had a lot of rubbish piled next to the bins so hopefully DOC or council service it regularly.

Very quite place to stay the night.
Please remember you need to ask for permission first. The bad thing was that the WC were closed when we arrived, but it was ok for one night.

Lovely place with lots of space and a great view to the nearby mountains.
Clean toilets and washbasins, cold shower in the open.
According to locals, they never seen or applied for the required permit sticker. Couldn‘t get it anyway, as we arrived on Sunday and Council office was closed.
Only (minor) issue: whole campground was covered with cut grass, which then obviously ended up inside the tent :-)

Nice open site with plenty of space.
Wasn’t crowded even on Easter weekend when families came and set up camp. Clean toilets and large rubbish bins.
There’s a small river here but it’s not a great example of clean green NZ. There are signs up warning about toxic algae and unfortunately the local hunters have used it to dispose of their headless boar carcasses. So yeah stay on the grassy field and enjoy the sunset in this peaceful setting.
It’s odd that the council expect people to get a permit in advance for this free site. We arrived on dark and without a permit. No warden was seen.
