Great site, yes it is a parking site but lined with grass so you can park on hard ground and put up tables etc on grass. Nice toilet and a cold outdoor shower. Came at 7 pm in march and still some places left
Large space for multiple people, great views come early to get a spot right on the beach. Clean bathrooms, cold showers and water. Even with how many people it held it was a quite and respectful place. Bring your own surf board for this one.
Basically a parking lot.
Its an inverted L shape with the bottom section facing the ocean.
We arrived 3pm on a friday and the ocean facing was full, by 7pm the complete lot was packed.
Great place to watch the sun set, toilets are decent enougj considering they're public.
We were with our small kids so the next morning we went to the nearby McDonalds for breakfast (mainly for the kids to use the play area)
Great site right next to the beach. Toilets cleaned twice a day but get a fair bit of traffic. Outdoor shower available. Access is a little different from what is described in this article though - best access these days is via signs to Cobden Breakwater right next to speedway (due to closure of access from Bright Street).
Awesome location and very clean toilets! It was very busy though, it was full after about 7pm so you have to be early.
Would be a higher review but the decent parking spots were taken at 4pm when we arrived, and people were parked badly to artificially create more space for themselves. Decent toilets and good view of the sunset.
GERARD & AXELLES
great spot for 1 or 2 nights.
enough space for 25cars at least.
rubbish bins were pretty full.
5min from town centre.
right next to the beach.
alot of people though.
Magic spot looking out on Tasman sea. Adjacent to quite beach walk. Well kept toilets beside parking. Well known stop over particularly with surfers.
Excellent spot by the sea! Road closed signs to the road but just went through them and lots of travellers about. Arrived around 8:30pm and all the spaces were taken but just parked on the side of the road. Toilets and outdoor shower available
We did not use the toilet and when we arrived there, it was almost full. Anyway the beach and surrondings are really nice
Great location as close to town. Probably wise to get there early to secure a spot - say 5ish to get a view of the ocean! Big rock steps to get down to the beach. Two flushing toilets on site and well maintained. Close to a doc kiwi guardian site!!!

Wasn’t as busy when we were here but at least half was full. Toilets where clean and has a wonderful view and lovely to fall asleep to sound of waves.
Absolutely beautiful spot to watch the sun set over the ocean (from the comfort of the warm van haha). Couldn't believe we were staying for free. There were toilets, rubbish bins and taps; next to the beach shower. Great little spot after a long day of driving.
Great place to stay, flushing toliets, lovely views & plenty of space :)
Nice spot on the water front. Quite busy so luckily we got the last spot to face out to the water. Very clean toilets for freedom! best yet!! Highly recommend
Awesome site! Clean toilets! No hot shower, only a cold outdoor shower is available. Plenty of space. If you like the sight and sound of waves, this is the place!
Another excellent site. Windy yes - but toilets felt like a hotel. So clean. We loved watching the local surfers and boats. So nice to be on flat clean ground. Lots of space. Stay here.

Amazing spot next to the sea front. Excellent toilets plus a cold shower (I braved it, but it was worth it). Room for 12+ Vehicles, so a decent sized car park. Can’t beat a sunset over the ocean.
Stayed on a Wednesday night. Great for what we were after.
Too bad it’s a carpark, if it was let’s say a big grassy area where everyone can park however he wants, the place would be my ideal freedom campsite !
You have clean toilets, an outdoor shower, a dump station.
View on the ocean (if you are there early enough to get a spot facing the ocean) is priceless. Cherry on the cake, if you got your surfboard, waves were firing the other day !
Arrived early enough to get a good spot watching the waves crashing in. It looked full by 6pm. Excellent clean flush toilets.
Really amazing campsite, we did park our van here when there was the storm recently and as a result of that it was very windy and rainy but the toilets are exceptionally clean and the water from the tap next to the toilets is potable. Highly recommend staying here rather than at the Cobden Bridge site because of the toilet situation.
Access savings worth hundreds of $$ on Top Ranked NZ Accommodation and Activities for just $1 per day.
Amazing spot, the view is spectacular, 2 clean flushing toilets. I can't believe this spot was free. Great work NZ!
Small place but beautiful. We couldn’t find a place near the sea, but anyway was very nice and the sunset really unique. If you arrive too late, you will not get room.
Carpark on the seafront, when the tide is in the waves are wonderfully close. Toilets a little walk away but very nice and a cold shower available too.
Amazing place, beautiful view. Clean toilets and cold outside shower. If you are lucky you see dolphins
Beautiful spot. Braved a cold shower! Toilets clean. Lovely view. Gets busy up the top nearest the beach.
Brilliant location - right on the beach front ... windy but love that and the sound of the sea - beautiful.
2 surfers showers and 2 large, clean toilets- ideal - Thank you Cobden and GreymouthCouncil for allowing this 👍
Perfect free camp, nice view directly on the beach (perfect for the sunset), a lot of space and really clean toilets ! We’ve been there three times in tow month, we loved it.
Cleanest free site toilets we've seen all around South Island! Cold showers available if you're feeling brave. Beautiful view of the beach right from the top rows but be sure to get there early if you want to secure a spot. Plenty of space further back too! Straight 10 /10
Basic flat surface car park with approx 20+ free pitches. Be prepared is very windy. Good spot on beach. A cold wind whilst we were there. Certainly heard this waves crashing. Two toilets which were clean. Young vibe. Felt safe.
Cold shower and toilet are perfect. Beautiful view but is a parking lot and was very windy when we where there.
Great place to watch the sunset. We arrived around 8.30ish but there are plenty of parking space left, maybe because it’s weekday. But the wind was very strong that night and our motorhome were shaking vigorously throughout the night. Toilets are clean, all the campers are very considerate. Outdoor cold shower available for those brave ones.
Excellent free campsite. Hard standing, reasonably flat for even large vehicles. Toilets cleaned twice a day and just a few feet from the beach. Couldn't ask for more. Thanks for the app.
Excellent free spot for self - contained vehicles. Plenty of space and decent toilets and free cold outdoor showers. The view of the ocean is great as well. Would come again!
Tatjana & Manuel
Today it was raining but the view on the sea is amazing. Also the two toilets are very clean. There is an cold outdoor shower available. Good place to stay there for a few nights
Great free site in a car park on Greymouth beachfront. Amazing views, new and clean toilets and right on the beach. Lots of sandflies so keep your doors closed but would definitely recommend!
This site is now a self contained vehicle FREE camping spot. Toilets cleaned regularly and lights on at night. Flat gravel parking areas side by side nose to surf or further back for more privacy. Views of ocean and Greymouth city lights. If you like the sound of roaring waves, sea salt spray and the wind rocking you to sleep this is the place to stay. I can see another FREE spot further up closer to surf and no amenities but still nice; wind and spray would be greater. SS Australia
Great level spot, amazing sunset views, new toilets. We got there early and backed into a great position, got busier as it got dark but still nice and quiet. Thanks to Greymouth for allowing camping here :-)
Lovely spot . A little hard to find as works are being done put in Blackett street, yellow sign speedway follow that to site.
It’s a simple, easy to find car park over looking the beach. There are 2 clean toilets. It was busy enough when we arrived at around 6:30pm but still found a spot.
Common trend of it being windy, can agree to that. But awesome ocean views, real sweet location, bonus of a clean toilet aswell.
This site is a special place...and we must say a huge thank you to the Grey District and the people of Greymouth for allowing campers to use this carpark and toilets free of charge. Get there early enough so you can get a prime site facing the sea, and you will get rewarded with a stunning sunset.
Another perfect free campervan spot. Lovely place to park up, especially if you get a space looking right into the sea. Beautiful new flush loo unit with cold outdoor shower. We stayed here en route down the west coast. Highly recommend.
Beautiful spot on the waterfront with brand new toilet block on site and outside surfers shower.
Cute walking park just next door.
We chose to walk to a takeaway shop nearby for fish n chips but be prepared as it’s cash only.
Only downside to this site was the wind!!! So strong the van was shaking all night. Arrive at a decent time as it does fill up but there are quite a few spaces.
Huge parking lot on the ocean. Very nice bathrooms and cold shower available.
Amazing place to stay considering it’s free and right on the beachfront! Would highly recommend!
Tay Dao Han
Good view of the Tasman Sea, though it also means it can get quite chilly and breezy. Just follow Nelson Quay and head all the way in. More than ample parking spaces, and two clean public toilets. If you like cold showers, feel free to use the outdoor showers. Otherwise, highly recommended for those passing by Cobden Beach!
Carpark location, but it's free! Its at the end of Nelson Quay. Views over the ocean are pretty spectacular. Amazing brand new toilet blocks with new Dyson hand driers. Two cold outdoor surfer showers to have a shower and wash up. Short walk (15min) to a local fish and chip shop which serves great and cheap fish and chips! Car bays are pretty close together (carpark style) but plenty of spots.
Great facilities, including an outdoor shower. Right on the ocean with amazing sea views. A bit crowded, as it is just a parking lot, but still quiet.
Great view directly in front of the sea. No toilets. The sunset is definitely worth to watch.
Lovely view of the sea, only for self contained campervans.
Phil and Mel Rowson
When we arrived there was a police presence but after a while he left, this made us feel safe that they keep an eye on the site. Right on the seafront. No facilities. We were lucky to have an amazing sunset here.
OK, there are actually two sites here, the one off Bright Street gives you awesome sea views, you are right above the surf, but no loos. If you turn off Bright Street onto Blackett Street (follow signs for Cobden breakwater) then onto Nelson Quay you end up at the shiny new site, immaculate loos, a surfers exterior shower, lots of space and looking over the sea. A fabulous beachside retreat in the heart of town.
This place is a short drive for Greymouth city centre. It is right on the beachfront so on a nice day it would be really nice. Unfortunately the day we stayed it was quite cold, wet and very windy (being on the beachfront) which made for a very noisy night. However for a free spot to park it is a good spot and plenty of space for all vehicles. There is another spot down the road with a dump station but we chose not to stay there as it can get boggy and was not overly appealing.
