Well that was fun! Half a day rain spend inside, half a day sunny spend in the maze. Highly entertaining and definitely something else from all the nature and views ;) Worth the entree-fee. Enjoyable, felt like a kid. Crazy amount of puzzles in the cafe, nice extra treat.

Maze and illusion room are great fun on a quieter day...especially if you get there upon opening. On a busy day don't bother to do the paid entry, but do stopoff, stretch legs and refresh. There is a gift/souvenier shop, cafe and toilet to use, along with free puzzle tables in the welcome area to entertain while you wait.

I was told to go here so I did.

It was a fun stop after a nice drive to Wanaka from Queenstown on a nice day. I was travelling solo so my photos were not great but there are many opportunities for selfies here. The large puzzles were mind blowing, such as the spiral with the ball, and I spent over an hour walking around enjoying the sights. It is a good place for the family and I would recommend it to other people.

A fun stop.

The displays and illusions here are quite good, but the place was ruined for me by the racist behaviour of the staff that I witnessed. I saw a staff member, unable to communicate with an elderly Asian man, falsely accuse him of assaulting her. Her supervisor then threw his entire party, including a young girl, off of the premises. The adults in the group were clearly humiliated and upset, and the little girl was in tears.

I just can't understand how staff at an international tourist attraction don't know how to deal with non-English speakers. I can only conclude that the staff are either untrained, or shamelessly racist.

The setup of Puzzling World is great, and I did enjoy the maze, but I really can't recommend it unless you are a white English-speaker. Such racist behaviour from staff is simply unacceptable.

Reviewed over 10 years ago and experienced in January 2011

Stuart Landsborough's Puzzling World Wanaka responds:

Our staff member was performing a routine stamp (ticket) check of ALL customers in the Illusion Rooms. She asked an elderly Asian man to see his stamp. When she left to walk to the next room the man grabbed her forcefully by the arm. This was followed by loud yelling in a foreign langauge and a raised fist near her face. She was then required to twist out of his grasp. (Another customer nearby also made moves to assist her).In light of this I felt it necessary to obtain the Asian mans version and then deal with it in the appropriate manner. This option was not possible as when I tried to address the gentleman, members of his party demanded to know what I was trying to say to him then refused to listen when I tried to provide an explanation which led me to advise the group that they needed to let the man know that his actions would not be tolerated and that he has no right to touch another person in such a way. My staff and I were then accused of ‘targeting’ the gentleman and of being racist. After being yelled and sworn at, I felt it in the best interest for both my staff and our other paying customers that they be asked to leave. I chose to escort them to their vehicles as I did not feel confident that in their present state that our property and other customers would not suffer. They continued to swear and verbally abuse me as they slowly made their way out and several times I was required to repeat requests for the elderly gentleman to stop grabbing me. Also I had a lady and the European man standing inches from my face yelling abuse at me. Several customers who witnessed the incident in its entirety later conveyed their disgust at the behaviour of this group. While I'm sorry the little girl was upset by the incident I need to make the call that this is largely due to the behaviour of her family. I stand by my decision – as unfortunate as the outcome, and still believe no person has the right to touch another in this way. Heidi Landsborough, General Manager

The incredibly popular, and wonderfully silly Puzzling World. Worth a quick visit, not entirely expensive, and definitely unique. The cynical soul might find the experience a little naff, but the traveler should enjoy the exhibits for the fun that they are. If you have children, this is a must. If you're a child at heart, equally so. If the entry fee scares you off, just wait in the foyer with the free puzzles until your friends emerge, giggling and feeling just a little silly. Good value.
