This area is for self contained campers only. There can be millions of lake flies so watch out and don;t leave lights on. How about supporting the local campground which is open from 12 October. It is $15 but you'll have a nicer experience, free wifi, hot showers and recycling.
If you want a nice quiet place to pull over for the night, this is perfect. We backed the van up and had a lovely view of the river. No toilets or anything so just be aware.

Place near to the street. Road noise fine after 9pm but plenty of bird noise in the morning.
A lot of the mosquito like looking flies. They don't bite so no worries. But if you have nets then please hold them close to prevent insects from coming in.
All in all fine place to stay for free. No problems with ranger as no no camping sign around. Even on the Christchurch list this place is not in a no camping zone...
Pretty spot by the lake, lots of swan, also lots of bugs at night so keep the screens shut once the lights are on! Absolutely beautiful sunrise.
Longdrop toilet but not water or other facilities.

Stayed in winter. No issue with ranger. Site a bit of a slope. Beautiful view. DOC toilet 50m away on railway track.
Stayed one night no problem. We left by 8am so perhaps the ranger comes after, but there isn’t any signage prohibiting camper vans. The site is small and there is road noise almost throughout the night (plus boisterous ducks), so bring ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper. But, it’s a gorgeous setting right on the lake and there is a toilet just down the path.
Attention since December 1st, camping is prohibited on this area. Early wake up by the rangers.
This was our first welcome to NZ meaning our first night out in the camper. I WAS IN LOVE. It’s quiet and a little off the road with hardly any traffic and so much life to watch! I loved being able to watch ducks and wash dishes at the same time.
Right next to the lake, which is beautiful and has loads of bird's. A little bit of noise from the road, but very minor. Must be in self contained vehicle.
Nice spot close to the road. Marked as parking area. A lot of gnats and midges.
It's not recommended to swim in the lake. See information table for more information.
Great place to stop for the night before heading over to akaroa the next day. Was over at this site with 2 other camper and there are still plenty of space. No facilities at the site. Just the view.
Good place in front of the lake to sleep one night or just share a beer
Good spot for a night, nice view on the lake and clean working toilet. Nights and dawn are quite windy.
