Euro Campers had an amazing customer service from the booking until the drop off of the van. They were quick to answer my questions prior to our trip and great with logistics (pick up, airport transfer, drop off). The staff was quick, efficient and friendly. Fabian was expecting us for the drop off and made it easy for us to give the campervan back and head to the city.
The campervan (Budget Traveller 2+1) was great for 3 people used to travelling together, it felt more spacious than some bigger vans we've had in the past. Even though the vehicle is quite old, everything worked perfectly well and we had no problem on the road. We also felt that if any problem were to happen, Euro Campers would help us out anywhere around the south island to help us keep on travelling.

Really friendly and efficient staff, great customer service and great quality of the vehicle and care package! We were all very pleased with our choice and highly recommend the company.

I thought the service was very good. The camper was as described on the website. Pick up and drop off of campervan was no hassle. We had to change the windscreen wipers on the van soon after pick up which we got money back for but felt this should have been checked and done before pick up. Mechanically the campervan was sound and we had no problems.

Kia Ora Glenn,

Thank you for your feedback and we do apologise for the issues you experienced. The campers are described as budget, older vehicles and hence the low hire rates. It was great to meet you, and your holiday sounded amazing.

We had a pleasant journey with our Budgy Traveller. Besides being a quite old van, it performed flawlessly!! We almost hit the 700k during our trip :D
Our wonderful experience w/ Budgy and EuroCampers began from the booking itself. Karolina helped us accommodate our best choice and was always helpful for any type of questions we had even with a 12 hours timezone difference.
At the time of our pickup, during our rental and at the return of the van, everything was smoothless and again Karolina and rest of staff were impecable and super friendly. I can only say great things on this team honestly. Just a big thank you to the shuttle driver, great guy too!

We booked the Budgy camper for 2 people. It was incredibly retro but did the job. The bed was comfortable and it had everything we needed. The downside of coming in winter was that the heater could only be used when the van was plugged into mains power so we relied upon hot water bottles for warmth when freedom camping (the kettle uses the gas hob). Also as plugs could only be used when the van was plugged in we couldn't charge our devices overnight. Toaster, kettle and heater are included.

The van was the perfect size for being both easy to manoeuvre but large enough to live in.

We chose eurocampers because they were the cheapest with a decent insurance policy included. The downside of them is that they're difficult to get hold of with a problem after 5pm (our tap wasn't working so we had to wait until the next morning to get help from them). Also their offices in Auckland and Christchurch are a little out the way unless you are going directly from and to the airport.

Budgy Campers responds:

Hi Bethany,

Thanks for your review. You have pointed out some good points which are mentioned on our website, including where we are located. Winter travel is becoming increasingly popular time for visitors to come to New Zealand, where freedom camping can become a colder experience, in the Budgy 2 berths. Having a hottie is a fantastic idea.

Services in New Zealand generally close at 5pm so getting assistance to you to sort out the tap issue after hours is always going to be problematic. problematic. We were pleased to help you out first thing the next morning.

All the best and see you again soon,
Budgy Campers

Excellent customer service - dealt with enquiries promptly. A couple of things let the van down (issue with cooker and water) but they have been helpful in sorting these out as quickly as possible.

Good company, very available. We took the budget sleeper which was nice but unfortunately needs a huge amount of fuel (about 15l per 100kms) which ends up being very expensive.

Great to meet you! September is a great time to travel New Zealand - less crowed and starting to get warmer. We had some great days in September. You travelled quite a distance in the Budgy Sleeper - fantastic way to see the country side.

Due to the good reviews, the German speaking customer service and the good price we decided to rent a camper with Euro Campers (Budgy Eco Sleeper). At first we were very happy with it, until we found out that the car was full of BED BUGS.

My partner and I had a really rough time, being covered in about 400 very itchy and painful bites. We still have scars from the wounds. We had to stop our journey and go back to Christchurch and were stuck there for a couple of days.

Positive: They let us stay in their office, use the shower etc. and take care of cleaning our stuff. They also paid for the dry cleaning and some new clothes we had to buy. We got a new car to continue our journey after four days and a small refund as compensation.

Negative: The handling on site was awful. Only after asking them, they sat down with us to discuss the situation. And even then, the handling was not very professional. On top we heard some very confusing stories regarding the car and its history: 1) On the phone: They told us there were problems with that car before. 2) On site they told us how they cleaned the car, changed the cushions and curtains and hoped everything would be fine. 3) They told us there never were problems with the car and we were the first ones to have the bed bug problem. Once we left they were not reachable by phone anymore, even when we called directly after receiving an email. Some of our belongings were ruined during dry cleaning and they did not pay for them. And when we started arguing about the refund, they even tried to make us responsible for the whole problem in the first place (each of us had about 400 bites, these little bugs only eat once every 5-7 days...so there must have ben lots of them in the van already and I am pretty sure we did not bring them with us).

We do not know how they cleaned the car, but when we returned the backup van in Auckland they just prepared the "bed bug car" for the next customer...

We had an amazing time with our Budgy Traveller during our 20 day roadtrip/honeymoon travelling close to 5000 km on both islands. Like stated on their website, it was an older campervan (ours had close to 670,000 km on the clock) but it ran like a dream! Apart from a minor issue with the water tap that was quicky resolved (loose connection at the electric pump), everything was in perfect working condition. The van was really clean when we got it from their Auckland location and it had a full tank of petrol, LPG and fresh water. The fact that it was self-contained allowed us to camp for free most of the nights, thanks to the Rankers and Campermate apps. The Campermate app also provide the location of public showers and bathrooms, dump stations and even interesting free things to do all over NZ.

The technology package included with the van was really practical. The 3G router is with Vodafone which had coverage almost everywhere in New Zealand and we opted for 5GB of data which cost us 80$. It was well worth it! The good old paper road atlas was also surprisingly handy. The GPS wasn't that great, it would lead us to weird roads so we stopped using it and relied on Google Maps instead (made possible by the aforementioned 3G router).

The care-free insurance is also a big deal, most of the other companies were charging extra for insurance and it wasn't cheap. The fact that everything is included and there are no hidden fees allowed us to appreciate our journey instead of worrying about what would happen if we were to have an accident.

The staff at both their Auckland and Christchurch locations was amazing - friendly, helpful and almost as excited as we were! They took the time to explain everything about the van when we got it and they were just as great when we had to return it at the end. It was really a pleasure renting from this company, we had an unforgettable time in NZ thanks to them.

Keep on being awesome!
