Awesome little town, great playground, super clean public toilet and 4Square and pub across the road ..... what more could you want!!
Lumsden has to be the most welcoming town in the whole of New Zealand for freedom campers. 45 camping spots for _any_ overnight vehicle (yes, you’re welcome to sleep in a non SCC vehicle), plus dozens more specifically for self contained campers. They have grassy areas if you want to tent, picnic tables, covered sections, wash stations, 24 hour toilet blocks, and even playgrounds for the kids. If you’re travelling between Milford Sound and Queenstown and you don’t stop here, you’re missing out. Please, please, please treat the space kindly so the kind people of Lumsden don’t regret their kindness.

This is an excellent free camp. There is a dump point and a toilet block. There’s plenty of parking especially at this time of year. We really appreciated the effort the town off Lumsden had gone to to provide a nice camp.
Thank you Lumsden community for providing this excellent space in the middle of your town! It was a very welcomed change to have excellent bathrooms, free wifi and a dump station with portable water available. The spot is a large car park, on both sides of the bathroom block. It has designated spaces for SC and NSC. Wifi is available through the library (free, unlimited and the fastest wifi we found in NZ). We stopped here on the way to Milford and again on the way back. The bakery next door also bought us out all their left over sandwiches and pies at the end of the day, which we shared around with the other campers! Definitely worth the stop and I suggest heading into a local cafe or the pub to support this beautiful little community.
If you go on the same side as the library, you can use their wifi. Free water, toilets and cooking area with lights. The grocery store is on the other side of the road.
By far the best free place we've stayed so far. You can stay in this lovely town for up to 7 days for free if you're self contained. There are nice flush toilets, a sink for washing dishes, clean water, dump site and wifi all for free. This place was actually better than places we've paid for. If you want to use the wifi the name is apnk or something like that and the password is just 88888888. For a small price you can also have a shower. Wonderful place
Big carpark, loads of spots for everyone else. I would say we were more than 30 vehicles to stay the two night we stayed (on our way to Milford and back).
We are SC and in a campervan so no need for everything but as a NSC or in a small van you’ll be pleased to find drinking water, super clean facilities, a sink to do your dishes and tables to eat.
A great move from Lumsden !
Awful. We thought we would try it out but regretted it. Noisy people camping here, next to a busy road, it's just a carpark and other campers there didn't care about their noise levels late at night. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.
many thanks to the town for this free place. the best we every had. (greets to doc and his scenic sites for 13$ pp). in lumsden you have clean and big toilets, sink for dishes, free wifi and a supermarket across the street. absolutely perfect
Really good spot, has better facility than most paid DOC sites! Had a great burger at Route 6 cafe. Couldn't seem to get the WiFi from the library that people had mentioned on previous reviews. All good though, thank you Lumsden!
Great free place for self contained OR non-self contained. Toilets were the cleanest we’ve experienced. Great cafes on the same block. Picnic tables and sunny/ shady area were a bonus. and there is a tap for drinking water and cleaning dishes. There’s a playground next to the lot that’s great for kids. Really awesome spot as a midway stop. Grab a coffee at a cafe to support this great little town.
Save up to 70% on campsite fees! Support conservation and experience the natural beauty of NZ. 79 Department of Conservation campsites, one convenient pass.
Lumsden information center was truly a memorable experience and maybe the best campsite we have stayed at. You find everything you need here- toilets, store, gas station and even hot showers. In order to shower just go to Foursquare, buy a key for $5 pp ($20 is a deposit) and then go to a community pool, where you can swim and shower. Lumsden is worth a visit for sure! :)
Perfect free place. Thanks Lumsden city and comunity for this site !
Better if you are coming before 7pm for Non Self Contained because there is a limit space for you (just on the both sides of train station) and this places are also used by Self-Contained travellers.
Drinkable water supply and clean toilets.
Thanks new Zealand for this place. We love you !
I was happy we went out of the way to stay here! It was a neat and clean place to park our Campervan. There is clean restrooms with soap, a playground, and a covered patio to play games/hang out/cook. Only downside is that it is in town and that includes road noise, and it seems to be a parking lot with only a set number of places to park so you are very close to other campers.
Amazing!! The bathrooms were clean, and the area was really quaint. The library is just across the street so free WiFi. We stayed here our last night, so the next day we were busy cleaning our campervan. This was a good place to do it. They had big rubbish bins, and a dump station. And it’s free!
Really nice spot in the middle of the City. Would come again.
Such a beautiful big calm ground, the lady is really nice indeed!
It’s 12$ now, not 10 anymore, for a non powered place!
Hot shower and kitchen with utensils included !
also laundry is available :)
Small town which found a way to attract some toutists. So spend some money here. Place is a parking area with new and well maintained flush toilets. Didnt see a shower, but might be around. Good spot for a stop over between Te Anau and Qu!
Amazing location at an old train station, directly next to the highway (not loud at all). Plenty of space for campers and cars. Very clean and modern toilets, free wifi from the library. Picnic area and sinks for doing the dishes.
Arrived about 6pm and snagged the last spot. Right as we pulled up a local was handing out invitations to a community bike and craft day event the next day. We had originally planned to leave to Te Anau early but with such nice people we stayed and supported the local event. We bought venison salami from the new butcher, a few things from the thrift store, a few crafts from the train station, and meat pies and donuts. Bathrooms were clean. This town is such a special find. The minor downside was the shower at the local pool. For $10 for 2 people in Nov. the solar heating system wasn’t great so it was a quick cool shower with a tinge of warm water.
Great free spot, offers everything you need. Sinks, toilets and showers for money. Spend some money in town, they deserve it for providing this great free spot. Slept here before going to milford as there seem to be no free spots on the way south to milford.
Free library wifi if you park on the west side of the train station. Niiiiice
Right opposite the 4 square shop and a cafe, very basic car park but has toilets and a park. Also able to connect to one of the local WiFi spot from the library
Access savings worth hundreds of $$ on Top Ranked NZ Accommodation and Activities for just $1 per day.
Great place to stop for a night or two, clean flush toilets, sink area, wifi from library across the street, would stay again!
Very cool place for campers in Lumsden. Sing says only on either side of the platform but when we arrived Kate vans were all ready double parks on either side of platform and it didn’t seem to cause any trouble while we were there. Decent public toilets and free wifi if you were lucky from the library. There was also a good washing up area which was useful. Nice chilled place
The first free site we used in NZ and pleasantly surprised. Very busy in late February and filled up quickly with tents even pitched on the platform, obviously writes by the occupants. The toilets are the public type and basic and a bit smelly. The wash up area on the platform was handy as were the picnic tables. Very quiet at night. Lovely staff in the local shops who were all friendly, so if it is to remain free people should use the shops and ensure the facilities are not abused, so help keep it clean please, as we will be back next year.
Good place to stay over, toilet is clean and able to connect library free wifi (unstable but it’s free). Have to go early as it’s full fast
Great camp ground middle of the town. Clean toilet facilities, no shower. But place to cook and wash dishes! Amazing!
Worst place we stayed. Very unhygienic (pee in gardens has bad smell and others bathing in sinks) and we felt unsafe. drunks lurking kept us guard so we slept bad. Not recommended

Great village!! friendly village that has transform the old train station into a campervan friendly area. Flush toilets and lots of spaces, for campervans and tents. It was full by 21:00. Very convenient if travelling to or from Milford Sound. Also you can get wifi from library and small cleaning area, and dump station and water supply. If would help the place if you can use some of the local shop to support the indicative so they can keep it on: like the nice bakery, some restaurant etc.
Nice place in the centre of the town. Toilets are available and plenty of space, even for tents and non self contained campers. Self contained may camp anywhere in the town.
This camp spot was great. Lots of space, clean toilets and a sink next to the train to use for washing up. Amazing and free!
This place is amazing!!! Very friendly with clean toilet. The best free camp in New Zealand.
I should say this is the best campsite I'v ever stayed. Actually, it's the playground located in the town centre, close to Information Centre.I really appreciate that the people in this adorable town share the place with us. You can get a small kitchen ,clean toilet, wonderful playground and free wifi from library. Really thank you for that.
there are good facilities at this large freedom camping spot (car park by old trains) - clean toilets nearby and an area to wash dishes up as well. It’s not got the fantastic views offered by other freedom camping sites, but it’s a useful place to stop on the long drive between Milford Sound and Queenstown. There’s a supermarket over the road and free WiFi available from the library opposite (stronger signal if you park on the side closer to the main road). It’s not anything glamorous, but it doesn’t pretend to be. A good freedom camping option, thank you Lumsden!
We were here twice to break up the drive to Milford Sound. It's right in the centre of the town, so if you prefer sleeping in the nature this is not for you. We loved the concept of the town opening up a stop for campers. Thanks Lumsden! It is very much appreciated.
Toilets open all night very clean. Here in August, 5 other vans, felt safe, well lit, gravel spaces. Large clean play park and very good free wifi. Washing dishes facilities and quiet.
Amazing free site! Huge level carpark with loads of spaces, clean flushing toilets, fresh water, dump station, free excellent wifi, shops/hotel/cafe right across the road, covered area on the station platform with benches & tables for cooking and sink for washing up. Really handy stop between Queenstown and Te Anau. Fantastic that this is all here for free, great job Lumsden!
Very friendly caretaker and his chocolate lab, Coco. This location covers most of your needs. 4 clean flush toilets, running water, sink area for dishes, garbage and recycling containers. Clean and well stocked supermarket across the street, tasty Chinese take away, Buzz cafe for meals. Interesting old train station and playground for the kids. Thank you Lumsden! We supported your businesses!
Good spot for free. We got there early at 1530, but huge gravel carpark on one side and carpark on the other side of station to use. We slept at 2200, but was very loud with music, talking and people turning up late to get a spot. Make sure you follow the rules on the sign, as the guy who patrols the property lives across the road and he got angry at one camper for peeing in the bush, when there are plenty of clean toilets near the playground. Plenty of rubbish bins and a sink area for washing up. Dump station and drinkable running water.
Nice place but definitely overcrowded. The railway platform is sheltered and a great place to cook food. Unfortunately too many people are messy or loud. The Lumsden hotel is worth a visit.
Quiet little town but the camping ground was spot on, has all the facilities you need, even a sink for washing up. Was quite busy but it gave it a nice atmosphere.

We arrived quite late and it almost has been filled up but we got a little spot with our self contained campervan. Everything was clean and quiet even there have been a lot of cars and people. Toilets are clean, there is a little supermarket across the road and you get free wifi. For free especially in a campervan when you just need to stay for one night it's perfect.
Definitely would stay there again.

Over-crowded with a lot of campers not paying attention or respecting others around, double parking, loud drinking games at night, and on top a guy with unbelievable loud music in his car driving around at night. Free wifi etc does not weigh in sufficiently...
Best camping spot in NZ so far. Clean toilets, drinking water, kitchen facilities, free wifi. + old trains and wagons.
Amazing facilities, big toilets, table, tap, water supply, dump station, Wifi for free, cafés and supermarket. It's not the most beautiful camping I saw but with these facilities I give 10/10 to it.
There were neat facilities near the area and the free wifi was great. In the morning the town has a great feel we went behind and took photos of the old trains there is also a dump station which was super helpful in the morning. I would recommend arriving early on so you could have a good spot. There is a Chinese takeaway, with great tasting food and very friendly owner, near by and a Four Square Market right in the front so that's really helpful. Overall fantastic place to stay would definitely recommend it for people who need a good rest either before or after Milford Sound.
Nice of the town to offer this and I ended up spending my "camp fee" in the local pub instead. Got very crowded even in usually quiet late September with at least 20 vans/cars spending the night. I found a bit of solace in the gravel lot by the railway cars.
Great spot to park for a weekend, everything you need, water, toilets and waste station. Great meal at the local hotel and friendly people. What a great wee town!
Great spot. Water toilet and free wifi. Thanks and well done Lumsden!
Not a pretty location a but a GREAT pit stop! It has everything a camper needs - public flushing toilets with lights, a free dump station, water, and free wifi!
This certainly was an area being well utilised by travellers.
The toilets were adequate and the wireless wifi from the library was indeed handy. The large sink on the platform was useful. A great stop over for the night.
Very good car park stop over. Nice clean toilets, water tap near sinks on platform and space for 30 plus vehicles. Stayed 2 non consecutive nights and highly recommend. There is free WIFI at the library steps, good shops including 4 Square Grocery and cafes, and petrol/diesel just up the road toward Te Anau. Power points have no power. Thanks to the local Council. The shops do well from this site!!
What an amazing little town! Full marks to the council who decided to use this spot for travellers. We stopped in enroute to Te Anau. The free camping site at the old railway station becomes a hive of activity at the end of the day, as campers pull in. We chose a spot closer to the toilets but noticed that there was quite a friendly community over under the station roof. The site has a grocery store, pub, and small cafe within 50meters.
Good location, sinks for washing up, bins, undercover picnic benches. Clean toilets, across the road from the library wifi, 4 Square there in town too.
Just a parking lot. Tourists come to take a photo of the historic train station. Shop and library in front. Clean toilet. Rubbish bin. Not so noisy with the road. Protect and respect nature!
Campsite is right in the middle of the town, with shops and the library right next so it. Drinking water is provided and public toilets are just 20 meters away. There are some sockets although they had no power. All in all a good way to spend the night and a beautiful spot if you want to go to Bluff, Milford Sound, Queenstown etc.
Large area around the old railway station. Fresh drinking water, clean toilets, waste bins. Free Wifi from nearby library. Very convenient to/from Milford Sound.
This spot was one of my favourite. Very large area. Drinking water, dump station, clean facilities, rubbish bins, electric plug too...... We spent a night before and after Milford Sound drive. Talked to locals and found out some interesting info.
