Owner/staff at the tavern were very friendly and welcoming. Bathrooms clean and open 24/7, no showers. We had a couple of pints and some wedges while we stayed, signage said participation not required but it felt god to support the family. The camping is in a grassy area next door, clean and quite, woke up to birds signing that was amazing. The area is overly al rural and quite we would stay here again. Also nice to stay in a freedom camping spot that's not just a parking lot for a downtown.

Beautiful spot to camp. No reception but it was good to have a night away from the screen. Staff at the tavern are very friendly. Food is great value for money and beers too! Toilets were clean and well maintained.

Very quiet and nice place if you don't want to stay at Taupo lake area. Very kind owner at the tavern.
Each camping location is approved by a regional council in NZ. So if it shows on the map, you’re allowed to stay.

Owner seemed friendly enough, you park up in the grassy car park next to the tavern, toilet looks modern but doesn’t look to have been cleaned in a long while, food available is standard pub grub, no network signal.
To set the scene: there’s lots of (presumably ornamental) chain saws, machetes etc on display on the ceiling of the pub with boar heads etc on the walls and photos of dead animals/‘hunting kills’.
We’d had dinner and gone to bed when we were woken up by 2 sets of knocking on the side of our camper van at 1am.
Very freaky experience in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere and safe to say we’re now put off staying in any more free camp sites.

Nice place to stop about 30 mins out of Taupo. We arrived about 8pm, went and had a beer in the bar, locals were all very friendly and welcoming. Sat and watched the super rugby final with them!
Toilets were modern and clean.

Easy to find, we went in March and there was heaps of room. Toilets are attached to the pub and very clean. No bins or showers though. Great place to stop on the way to Taupo, only 30mins. Had no reception though.

Brilliant spot. Amazing food and clean toilet. No shower but worth the nights stop. Friendly locals and staff. Not many campers on the 20th Jan. Will be back for sure. Thanks for having this spot a freecamp spot.

We had a really lovely time at the Tihoi Tavern, the couple who run the place, Tony and Maria are lovely and there is a frew pool table! All the locals were really nice as well. I highly recommend it as a place to stop, they'll really make you feel at home!

Free, with 24h toilets. No WIFI
Easy drive to Taupo, closest and only spot in winter for non-self contained.
Essentially a grass pitch beside tavern, included takeway and basic needs.
Make sure to support the team, or thank them for making this spot available.
