Last night there were 32 vehicles and 13 tents on a small narrow slopping site that is meant for 15! The river is beautiful and it would have been a dream had it not been so crowded.

A small camping area with a short gravel road and turn-around loop. Quite a steep grade up from the site to the road with no level patch to wait for traffic. The river has a nice deep swimming hole and the water is clean but unlikely to be drinkable. Only downside was the traffic noise from the Nelson/Blenheim highway which carries a lot of heavy trucks in the early morning presumably heading to/from the Cook Strait Ferries. Popular stop off place but not as crammed as the Alfred Stream site about 1 km away on the main road.

Nice spot beside a river. Free, well maintained and with a toilet.
A very nice place to stay for the night. Kinda hard to find because there is not a sign on the road, (it's just through the fence on your right just a bit after you got of the main road). An important thing to know; there is a sign warning you that the area will flood when there are heavy rains. Do not come here with a heavy 4 persons camper on a rainy day, you will get stuck. But that said, it's a great spot to camp and sit by the river.
This has got to be one of the best kept freedom camp sites in the whole of NZ. Beautiful spot beside a clean fresh river which I would have swam in had it not been mid winter. Some road noise, but woke to songs of black birds, and bush robins. We were the only one here at the end of August. PLEASE PLEASE keep this place tidy for others to enjoy. There are about 6 pitches some are a little sloping.
Small track with 3 or 4 very private spots right next to the clean river, tucked into the bush. Drop loo, clean, free and a beautiful spot.
