Chris Jolly have been running boats on Lake Taupō for over 40 years and it shows. The cruise out to the Māori rock carvings is the main draw and most people come away pretty happy with it. The commentary is genuinely good and the carvings themselves are worth seeing. A couple of reviewers found it a little slow going, which is fair enough. It's a relaxed, scenic cruise rather than a big adventure.

If you're after something more lively, they also do guided fly fishing, hiking, biking and deer hunting in the region. For a business event or group charter, one past traveller raved about the staff even dressing up to match their theme, and the boat handled some rough weather without any drama.

My pick is to go for the cruise as a gentle start or wind-down to a day in Taupō. Use promo code RANKERS for 10% off, which helps keep us going too.

  • Cosy little cruise on the Taupo Lake with a great view of a Maori cove sculpture, you can fish and eat what you get.

  • The team at Chris Jolly Outdoors did an amazing job for us.

Thy were friendly, prompt at answering any questions and presented great value for money for our business. The staff and guests loved the boat ride and even the boat staff got dressed up in our theme!

The weather was crappy but the boat was super stable and the skipper found us a calm bay to float around in. I would highly recommend a business party on the Cruise Cat.

  • Standard sort of cruise (1.5 hours) good commentary and nice to be able to get a cuppa on-board.

They don't tell you the maori carvings are modern until you get there! Most of us assumed they were old.
