Good place, with camps for larger vechiles. Super close to town but no noise at all as it is a quite town. Right on the water which is good! Only a 7 because it is really just a car park
Even though the holidays hasn’t started, the place was filled up before 3PM! That’s not normal, you never get a chance for a stay. There was a map with a brochure about freedom camping around the area, which can help to find a place to stay.
Ideal location and within walking distance of the town. Toilets about a 2-3 minute walk, but a nice area to relax next to water. Would definitely recommend! Get there early as it was full by about 6 when we went.
Good place to stay the night in a beautiful location. Town and toilets are a short walk. Lot fills up early, there were already several spots taken when I arrived at 4pm. Hot commodity, especially being a free site.
Nice free site, toilets 100m away, beautiful spot, very close to town.
Has toilets and bins for rubbish/recycling - pretty nice spot with a nice view :)
Great free spot. Our first night freedom camping & relatively quiet. We were the first around mid afternoon. Careful you park in the right spot as we almost parked in the car park over the bridge by the water but saw the no camping signs. Look for the green fence. Easy walk to centre of town, public toilets a few minutes walk away although they aren’t awesome. There’s nicer ones in town for during the day.
El and Josh
Awesome camp, right in town. Public toilets are about a 5 minute walk, but the ones in the centre of town are much nicer. Site fits 18 now.

Great spot, really picturesque near the water, cute stream with ducks and plenty of stars out at night. But a busy spot. And warning, *don’t confuse this spot for the daytime-only parking right next to it*: we almost got caught out when we pulled up for the night in the *day parking only car park as there were loads of other campers there. Foolish of us as there are plenty of signs saying no camping (was our first night). Only twigged later. Overnight camping is the smaller campsight the other side of the footbridge from the public toilets near the road. Once in it was a great spot. morning and evening patrols here.
Not bad ! Pretty busy, we got the last spot at 4pm !
You’re close to the city, the spots are pretty large so you’ve got space around you, toilets 2min away, I’ve seen worse !
We got the last space 3.30pm and many people drove past after that so get here early. Quieter than expected for a car park. Handy for town. Flushing public toilets a 3 minute walk. Saw a tap that said $2 for water but didn’t use it as we had filled up at the potable water tap outside the Duvauchelle campsite that is free.
Great location but very busy. We would recommend doing as we did and arriving in the morning to secure and spot and then explore Akaroa from here so you know you definitely have a spot for the night. Freedom camping officer checked in at 8pm and did not mind several vans parked in one space.
Nice spot. Quiet at night. Went on a penguin evening tour and could walk “home” after the tour. Nice little market close by Saturday morning
Get here early if you have a big camper! Limited spots but the parking zones are quite big. Park to share spaces as 1-3 small vans could fit in 1 long space. Toilets within 5 minutes walk! Local security was patrolling so beware of parking in undesignated zones. We were told to move from the lighthouse parking and advised that no camping signs had been delayed but are intended to be put there soon.
C’est un parking avec 18 places pour accueillir les véhicules SC. Les SC doivent se garer dans les places jaunes à l’entrée du parking. Il y a des toilettes publiques à 1min à pied et une poubelle pour trier les déchets.
23.11.2018: nice spot and this spot has been extended to 18 sites since this Night

01Nov18. There is a sign about where you can park overnight but it is not clear. The only clear signs are the individual ones as pictured in the description. We parked in one of those.
There are a bit tight so only 9.
However, the location is good. There are toilets a few minutes walk away but there are much better ones farther into town.
We are staying 2 nights here after checking out the lighthouse site. That one slopes a bit.
This spot is okay for one night, it is located on a car park, 3 min from the closest public toilets. Can become busy really quickly !
Really great spot in a lovely town. Toilets public and free for campers to use, only a short walk away. Would definitely stay again!
Free site, limited spaces, safe area and well sought after by free campers. Okay public toilet a short 1 min away. Close to the beautiful town of Akaroa. Great sunrise/sunset over the water.
Large carpark off a boat ramp with a relatively small area for self contained vehicles. Was fairly busy even in off season when we arrived and it was super crampy but more than sufficient for a overnight stay! Close to town and quiet enough! Nice walk along the water in the morning!
Avoid this town, parked in info center suggested spot by lighthouse. After midnight, truck with 4-5 drunk? High on drugs? locals stopped with stereo blaring, yelling and screaming and banging on van... to "come out of the van"... Then started throwing garbage and bottles at van. Better places to stay and spend my money.
Large car park with two large areas for free camping marked in yellow. Signage could be better. There are several places to free camp in Akaroa, however they are generally hilly so not ideal. This is the best place as it is level. Check with the I-Site for more information.
Public toilets 150m away and close by to town centre. Some campers risked camping by the water’s edge, outside the yellow lines, but didn’t appear to be fined. Plenty of space. We had no trouble with noise/unsociable behaviour etc.
Free spot right in town along Harbour. Good spot for parking and leaving vehicle with easy walking down Main Street Akaroa. Toilets near parking area were quite terrible for cleanliness but hey it’s free and there’s other great toilet blocks in town. Be sure to arrive early though as the spots fill up...can only park in yellow lined areas.
Site for fifteen vehicles directly in the city not far from the toilet and water point. Sufficient for one night.
Shorts walk to the stores and Bars, nice view across the bay. Public toilets a few meters away but still near enough and cleanyness is ok
Tay Dao Han
Great campsite with clean public toilet, though its abt 100m-200m walk away. Essentially a boat ramp car park!
Realized not only can you park within marked "Self-Contained" only campervan parking zone (Takes about 6-7 campervans, which needs to be parked really close to each other), but also within the yellow lines (proper parking sites), with plenty of parking (another 8-10 more parking spots)!
We arrived at 11pm and spent Christmas in this area!
Check out the signboard.
Well signed at entry of Akaroa, at the end it is a carpark, but clean toilets are available and only a short walk to the beautiful town.
Nice town and a great spot near the centre. Flush toilets nearby. Rubbish bin nearby. Two areas where you can camp between the yellow lines on pavement. Seen better scenery but is practical. Quiet in the night. It's free and everything is nearby
The actual car park was full by the time we arrived, however after speaking to the local I-site guide- self contained vehicles can also park in the little car park next to the light house. Fantastic views across the bay and a short 5 minute walk into the centre of town. Plus, we were the only ones there!
Good spot but tucked away from the awesome view. Handy to town. Can't complain for a freebie. Limited spaces so would need to get in early during high season.
Close to the village and pleasant.
Lovely spot, very pretty boat trips nearby and nice village.
Perfect location to town. Just a car park. But it's free! Toilets are 200m away, which can feel very far in the middle of the night! Some locals had a massive party in the car park next door and played very loud music all night, so unfortunately we can't rank it higher than 7.
Very convenient free camping location by the water. Amazing view and close to everything. This campsite is pretty much a small car park. We were lucky to be able to squeeze behind a small camp van as we arrived later. No other spot was available. The pubic toilets are 200m away.
Ideal location to watch sunset.
Very small site with maximum of about 10 campers. Great location right in the river edge, short walk to town. Magical views. Get there early to secure your stop.
There are other freedom camping options in town. This is a small town obviously encouraging freedom camping, so respect their right to restrict the locations.
About 16 spots with half of them able to fit 2 small campers, fills up really fast. Public toilets 200 metres away. Nothing special but excellent location in close proximity to main retail shops an restaurants.
Go to the Lighthouse instead! Previous reviews are right about getting here early, it's pretty much a parking lot/car park with a fenced off area. Spaces are lined and very cramped. We arrived and there were only two spaces left.
Make the most of this spot, it's freedom camping at its best!! Not sure how long they'll allow it.
Happy camping :)
10/10 for convenience. Free. Walking distance to everything, great restaurants etc. Located on the left just as you come into Akaroa. Room for only 7-8 self contained vehicles only. Fills up fast, so you have to to get there early. We visited in May, nabbed our spot at 3pm, lot was full by 5pm with others still trying to find a spot there well after dark. More town councils should provide self contained parking lots close to their towns like this, as tourists are more likely to spend their $ in the shops and restaurants if they can easily walk to them :)
Nothing special, but great for a free place to pull up, get dressed and go enjoy one of the french restaurants. We went to the little bistro and it was AMAZING food.
Great spot if you want to spend a night in a beautiful romantic town on Banks Peninsula. Toilet couple of minutes by walk and drinking water is available too.
Great free spot as there are not many others in or near Akaroa. There are spaces for 7 campervans, although they must be self-contained. It is a short walk across the car park opposite to the toilets.
