We were pleased we stayed here over other choices in the area - such good value for money ($20 unpowered, $30 powered) and great hosts to boot! We parked our camper down the end of the massive parking lot and had a stunning view of the snow capped mountains and only calves and horses for neighbours. Well appointed bathrooms, showers are $4 for 4minutes of hot water but in reality they go for much longer than that and they were extremely clean when we were there. The owners were super accomodating organizing breakfast for us to take away and we had a delicious dinner at the pub run on site.
Not free anymore for SC vans, they acted surprised when I told them it was supposed to be free and I had to pay $20. This doesn't include hot water (sink or shower).
The camping is otherwise ok, you have a nice view and it is very quiet
The review given 4 months before this one about free camping is either out of date or false: all sites are $20 plus another $10 for a powered site - yes, there are powered sites now. This is clear on all signs upon entry to the site.
Great facility with clean toilets and showers. $20 for unpowered site. Lovely setting with amazing views of the mountains. Really nice Pub on-site with great food. Don't leave without trying the Chowder.
$20 dollars for unpowered sites & $30 with power. Pay at the bar on arrival. Plenty of sites when we stayed near the end of Feb. Nice setting in the country side amongst the farms with view of the mountains. Toilets to use & $4 hot showers
The spot is really beautiful and so is the pub. But ... it is not a free place. We had to pay $20 without electricity and $10 more with electricity. It is more than worth it.
Not free anymore! Came here after reading reviews saying unpowered sites are free, but all sites are $20 now + an extra $10 if you want power. Nice place though, clean toilets and showers ($4), drinking water taps everywhere.
Arrived at a lovely Irish Pub and Motel where Murray has extended it to campervans on site. Great location to Kaikoura. Superb food in pub (suggest lamb shanks). Horses in the paddocks. Ducks in the ponds. At $20/30 for unpowered / powered site this is a great spot. Clean and appointed.

Large (but unimaginatively laid out) car park site, with fresh water at pretty much every pitch and power if you want it. Nice welcome in the bar/restaurant and the food was great, if you can cope with piped Irish music, which you can't escape if you're eating or drinking, even outside. The camping is far enough away that you can't hear it there, though. We stopped in at Kaikoura, booked a whale-watching trip for the following day, then spent the evening here, just outside the town itself.
The sites are no longer free-of-charge. Unpowered is 20$ per night. Power Will cost you 10$ extra. Each site has a water connection. Facilities were clean and it looked like they were extending it. Hot shower was 4$.
We had a nice dinner in the restaurant that has a nice atmosphere.
We paid 20NZD without electricity. If you want electricity you must pay 10NZD more. Water is included.
Toilets are good. Shower costs 2 NZD. You have to take the waste with you.
We loved it here! Heaps of spaces available for powered ($30) and non powered sites ($20), hot showers awailable for $4 (4 minutes), cold showers for free, clean toilets and water available for filling tanks at every spot! Good views of the mountains when it's not cloudy. There is also a bar with lots of options and even a vegan option!!!
Great place for a self contained vehicle, has lots of accommodation. It is $20 per vehicle and $10 extra if you want power. Has a cool Irish bar/restaurant on site which seems to be everyone’s local. Would definitely recommend 😊

We just have stayed there. Nice clean area with marked stands for each camper. But it's not any more free since yesterday. You have to pay 20 Dollars for the non powered places, too.
It‘s not free anymore, 20 NZD for an unpowered site, add 10 NZD for power and 4 NZD for a 4 minute shower. No kitchen. The site is more like a big parking site and sites are not really seperated. Considering the cheap price it is okay.
I didn’t stay here, but I couldn’t find any other way to submit an info change on this app without submitting a review. It did seem like a lovely place but the cost is actually $20 w/o power and $30 w/ power; there is no “free” camping as others have alluded to. I considered staying anyway but due to rain I opted to continue driving.
Would highly recomend this place!! Non powered sides are free, powered 29 per van. Hot showers for 4 dollars. Everything really clean. Staff is very nice and helpful. The Pub serves great food and beer. Really a spot to stay!!
Free for campers without power. Pub just next to it. Toilets are fine but you have to pay for toilet paper and showers. Campsite wasn’t too busy. Kaikoura main town 10 minutes by car.
Great campsite and you can stay here for free. Every single parking space has its own tab!
So we decide (and thought, a lot of all the other campers would do the same, but it was really a shame - they don't!) to have a drink in this awesome pub!
What a beautiful and peaceful spot, in among the horse paddocks with views of snow capped mountains and a lovely garden with duck ponds to stroll around in. And it turns out there’s also wifi which works out in the van-parking area - an unexpected bonus. The $4 showers are hot and seem to go on longer than the stated 4 minutes. Just BYO toilet paper (or buy from bar). Taps in the van area to refill tanks. And super-friendly staff.
Excellent spot to stop for the night - free for a non-powered campervan site, which given the quality of the place is pretty amazing. Showers cost 2 x $2 coins and there are toilets for everyone to use. The pub was cosy with a log fire and the staff lovely and friendly. Would highly recommend staying here!
Donegal Irish Pub is a few minutes drive out of town. Unpowered sites were free, powered sites $20.00. We pulled up here on a freezing, windy, rainy evening. The pub was lovely, great atmosphere and roaring fire. Showers were $2, but unfortunately didn't work when we were there. Very pretty location.
Great place. Free over night for self contained with no power or only $20 with.
The pub is great. Great price, good pints and the food looked good. Huge roaring fire which our kids loved as toasty warm.
Good little kids play area outside
Best place we’ve stayed! Awesome having a free and safe spot with flushing toilets! Definitely get your moneys worth with $4 showers. Great views and close to town. We’ll be back!

Stayed on unpowered site. Water and toilets were available and near. Food in the pub was fantastic. Woke up to views of horses. Absolutely great that it's free. Would stay here again if given the chance.

Are you in Kaikoura, checking out the free site by the beach in the pouring rain, imagining a shivering cold night ahead? Stop what you’re doing and roll over to Donegal House! It is FREE if you don’t require power, and their pub has a roaring warm fire that you can warm yourself by for hours, with a comforting pint, before you tuck yourself into your beloved van. We did, and we couldn’t have been happier about it.
I found this location to be excellent, I almost feel guilty that we stayed for free. But I got over it. Friendly folks, very interesting history of the place and we found the restaurant food to be excellent. Plus the wife did have a regular Coke which I sampled and tasted very good. I assume the Coke is made with sugar and not corn suryup like it is in the US.
Very nice place, free toilet, shower 4$, very good food, and very much places available. Non powered is free. And a nice few in the morning.
Great place for a stay!
Clean facilities, friendly people and non powered sites are free! :-)
Good pub/restaurant with a.o. Guinness on tap and if you like Irisch pub food, this is home with a mountain view.
What a gem! We stayed in a non powered site for 4 nights completely free. Showers are 4 dollars for 4 minutes in really nice well maintained bathrooms. Plenty of places to site by the duck pond. Great place for food and a drink. There is drinking water but it was really warm so we just filled up our water in the isite in town each evening
Can't complain free camping site coz its free. But we don't like food there. They don't have coke only coke zero.
This is a great property with tons of space and a cozy bar. It is free or a donation if you don't need power. We were there over Christmas so it was very quiet and some of the facilities were out of order.
Great place to stay. Like others say, plenty of space and free non-powered sites available. Great bar inside too
Non-powered sites are free for self contained vehicles!
Hot shower 4$ but only two showers and 3 toilets so be prepaired for waiting line
Nice irish pub
10min drive to kaikoura
Lovely owners and bar for drink/food on site, live music one of nights we were there. $20 for powered site, free for non powered, plenty of spaces. Facilities at the hotel for campers are clean and warm need 2x $2 coins for showers. 10 minute drive from Kaikoura peninsula.
14Oct18. Free for non powered but powered are available now. We stayed free. Don’t know what cost for powered.
Loads of level sites, I think all with access to water.
We stayed free as we ate in the restaurant/pub. Good food and beer. Two large TVs were playing Irish Folk videos. Not our scene but ok.
It seems like we were right under the mountains. It was cloudy when we arrived but clear first thing in the morning. Great views of the snow covered mountains.
We enjoyed it. I think we will go back when we do our next trip. Sooner the better!
Do yourself a favour and stay here. $20 for two people on a powered site. Full amenities and an Irish bar and restaurant. Did I mention the wood fireplace? Beaut gardens? Clean amenities? I would have loved to stay longer.
FREE for non powered site. Very popular, pub was a nice atmosphere, can’t go wrong. Toilets clean, shower available to pay for if required. Overall, would definitely stay again.
Nice overnight campervan park by the lake which was free for unpowered. Nice beer and dinner in the pub too! We had soup chowder and lamb roast.
Nice spacious ground, good clean bathrooms, $4 per 3min for hot water. Cozy Irish pub, very good lamb roast and cold beers. Good place to crash the night.
As for free self-contained camping it's better then perfect, clean toilets and showers 4$ .. now here's the but. So with free camping we feel obligated to eat there that night and what was served to us my grandmother would not have feed her Irish pigs honestly was disgusting and the staff gave rude comment to my wife when collecting the ( 3/4 unedible meal ) such a shame as this place would have made a *10 if it have mc Donald's food out and the staff made any effort
Free! I repeat free! For non self contained motor homes. The owner was obviously in a good mood! Great Irish pub. Serves a great meal!

Free campsite with cleaned toilets and paid hot shower. Limited power site . Nice pond in front of bar & restaurant. Beautiful sunset.
Very quirky but brilliant place to camp in your van. There's half a dozen powered sites, and more unpowered. Beautiful location, and the food and Guinness in the pub is excellent. Great staff, and good clean toilets. There's a shower you can pay to use. No wifi. There were guys going to work on the roads first thing, and also two roosters who start at about 5am! But worth it for the decent price.
The spot for self-contained van is free, clean toilets, water for free and shower ($4 for 3min of hot water). Flat gravel parking : not a stunning view. A rooster, regularly screaming, kept me awoken from 4am!
The pub is nice, warm ambient, truck drivers hideout, continuous Irish music, a bit loud to my taste. Big portions, count $50 for starter, meal and desert. Specialty is the roaster, at $25 very tasty. Beers on tap, $9 for a pint. The garden is really nice, you can envoy the sun there.

A dream come true! Imagine spending the night at an Irish pub drinking and eating and when your eyelids almost fall shut you can tuck in to your cosy bed in your campervan.
Rolled up after going through the main strip of motels and backpackers. Skeptical at first, discovered a gem. FREE unpowered sites to our surprise. A lovely bar with very friendly service. Open wood fire, Irish drinking songs and cider/Irish beer on tap. Beautiful grounds, no nighttime lights to block out. No amenities for campers aside from at the bar, but just make sure you capitalize before bed.
Awesome place. They didn't charge us anything to camp for the night and they had water available at the sites. The bar and restaurant are cozy and the food is amazing. There's a public dump site, gas station, and grocery store nearby. Would love to stay here again.

We arrived at 8 p.m. and there were already 2 other motorhomes. Quiet and nice flat ground, saw the sign that says it cost NZD10 per night per camper van and to register at the bar. Went in and the lady at the bar told us its free. I decided to have a drink there and enjoy the atmosphere.
Each lot has a water tap and we took the opportunity to replenish our water storage for our onward travel.
Nice spot. The backyard is beautiful! Don't judge the place from the outside. Just grab a seat in the garden and taste the delicious food!
Water on each site. It's on flatland between sea and mountains, don't expect any stunning views.
However, the pub & garden makes up for anything which is missing. Come there just to have roasted lamb & few Guinness from tap, it is definitely worth it!
It is a wonderful free campground in Kaikoura with good number of parking lots, water supply at every lot and pleasant farm view. The location is quiet, peaceful and not too far away from the town center. Thanks to the kindness of the owner of the place.
No power at time of stay so at the moment it's a car park with cold water taps, although sign says power coming soon. Nice bar and gardens but not easily walkable to town.
Wonderful place to be! Very friendly staff, delicious meal. Self contained only, just $20.
Ah-mazing. Free, use of their toilets. Must have dinner in the pub - sit outside if it's nice weather, very yummy food. Beautiful scenery looking to the mountains beyond the house/pub. We went for an early dinner and didn't roll back to the camper until about 1am!! Thanks Corrina!! You were amazing!! (Helen and Neil, the Newlyweds) :-D xx
Great place to stay with our campervan. Around 5 to 10 minutes away from the town centre. We also filled up our fresh water.

Great area and friendly atmosphere at the bar.
Excellent place. Parking area is now bigger than the latest photo, I forgot to take one.
Camp free and your choice if you dine in or out. We dined at the Hotel and for $20 had a very
large meal, in front of a roaring fire. Self contained only.
Absolutely love this place. Great atmosphere, great people and great food. Will definitely be coming back for another stay. Thank you to all the wonderful staff.
We arrived late at night in the dark in our van. Woke up to an amazing view of snowy mountains. Lovely location. Water was available but we didn't use it.

Beautiful and quiet free spot next to the Donegal house Irish hotel. A nice flat gravel area. Waking up among the ducks, horses and birds near the lake was a bliss. Self contained only. Loved it for our first camping night in NZ! In May, there were 2 other campervans there.
Really nice place to stay with a campervan (if you are self-contained). It is a quiet place with a beautiful view out of your campervan windows. In the nice Irish Bar and Restaurant you can spend all your money that you did not spend on a campsite.
A nice surprise freedom camp for our 1st night in a campervan
We were concerned at first when we found it on the Rankers App, but when we arrived, it was indeed free. The Hotel have put aside a gravel area (20 spaces at least?) for complimentary campervan overnight parking.
Self-contained only, and no expectation to spend anything in the hotel, we only popped in to check it was free, and they were genuinely surprised we asked.
Spent the night next the duckpond and shared the site with only one other campervan
On departing we noticed a water supply marked for campervans so filled our fresh tank
No frills, but free
Cheers Donegal House
