What an incredible holiday we had thanks to the personalised service of the Pod team. Huge thankyou to Liz, Mike, Juuso and Destiny for looking after us, for making sure we knew the best places to visit and for ensuring our first ever camper experience was memorable. Every detail was taken care of, with all our questions answered quickly. We had a super early departure which was no trouble for the team who organised a smooth and fast exit. Can’t wait to come back and do it again!!

Had an awesome time using The Pod campervan during our trip in the South Island. Greatly appreciated that they don't charge a one-way fee and they have pick up/drop off locations in convenient spots. We also were given a self contained vehicle even though we had booked a month before they would be launching them so it was a very nice surprise and opened up more campsites for us to use. :)

The van is roomy and still has good storage space when the bed is out. It was an older model van, so hills were not it's best friend, but it still got the job done and didn't affect our experience.

I'd totally recommend and use them again!

We just went in a 9 day road trip in a self-contained Pod van and it was amazing! The kitchen set up is great and easy to use and keep organised. We loved the stereo and the ability to play our own music on the road. The self-contained van has an odd bed design due to the rule that you need to be able to use the toilet while the bed is set up. This means the bed is an odd shape and we did find it a little uncomfortable to sleep in with two people. We would probably opt for the van that isn’t self-contained next time for the bigger sleeping space! We would definitely recommend Pod rentals and it’s always great to support a growing local business!

We really enjoyed our time spent in "little Ella". From when we were picked up in downtown Queenstown, Mike and Liz went out of their way to create an awesome customer service experience. They explained all the details of the pod and even let us take a few items from the "pantry" left behind by other campers. Mike and Liz have created an awesome camper- they should be proud!
Over our week long journey from Queenstown to Christchurch, the pod camper was perfect. It ticked a lot of boxes for us and was very economical compared with other camper vans we looked at. Everything has been thought of and well designed. And the bed was surprisingly comfortable too! Very cosy. Just bring some sandfly repellant!
We loved how all the campers are named differently, and it was always exciting to see another pod on the road.
Although we didn't have one of their newer self contained campers, we found plenty of cheap campsites around with showers and toilets so it wasn't a problem. It was such a cool way to travel around the beautiful country of NZ, and I felt very proud to show my American husband what NZ has to offer.
I can't think of anything negative about our experience. They even couriered my water bottle to me after leaving it in the van. Would definitely rent from this company again and have already recommended them to my family!
Thanks pod rentals!!

We had Little Lucy as part of our adventure for 3 weeks. It was fantastic. Cosy but comfortable. She became affectionately known to us as The Goose and was fully part of our family as she took us through the amazing scenery from South of the South Island all the way up to the North of the North. I can't imagine there being a better way to experience New Zealand than in a campervan. Some of the campsite experiences alone made the trip SO worthwhile, (little tip: Make the effort to stay at Gillespie Beach near Fox Glacier. Sunset was beautiful).

I miss being there and I miss the Goose.

We took our lovely Pod, named Little Rimu, from Queenstown to Auckland and loved it! It was compact but really comfy, with ingenious solutions to make the most of the space like slimline shelves that we used for the folding table and chairs and our shoes. Everything we needed for cooking was either in the Pod or on the free stuff shelf in Queenstown.
Mike was amazingly friendly over email, and Liz was awesome when we called her one day about a cracked windscreen! Couldn’t recommend them enough, a great experience that we’ll always treasure.
For a really great price, we couldn’t have asked for much more!

We had the Pod for a 10 day trip, and could’ve gone much longer! The layout is perfect to be able to store your things without having to hunt or rearrange every night. They think of little details like travel mugs, so you don’t have to pay extra for single use cups. Getting full coverage even on unsealed roads is what sold us - we made it to all the best locations without worrying. Would definitely book again!

The Pod Campervan rentals are one of the best companies I have had the pleasure of dealing with, from the very first email they replied swiftly, personally and helpfully. A few other companies I had been dealing with simply gave stock answers to questions and seemed unwilling to enter into discussions about flexibility or customer satisfaction.
I would go so far as to say emailing with Mike was a pleasure and was actually a little looking forward to meeting him when the time came!
I think the only reason that I haven't given a 10 was that having previously owned a fitted out camper there were subtle touches to the fit out that would have made it more effective in my eyes, but this is a very personal view. I recognise that fitting a fleet of different vans out means a standard design and The Pods are incredibly well and thoughtfully designed. The vans themselves are deceptively roomy given how big they actually are, the beds/seating is comfortable for that inevitable rainy day. There were so many extra and helpful touches such as a heater, small amount of dish washing liquid and toasting rack which lets you know that you're in good and thoughtful hands.

I can't thank Pod enough for how easy and wonderful they helped make our travels in New Zealand

We rented our van with the lovely folks over at the Pod. The van, little Alex, was perfect, it was very comfortable, had everything we wanted and took us all over both islands.

We picked it up at Christchurch and dropped it off at Auckland, which was ideal. The process of renting the van was very smooth and when we made a mistake with booking the people at the Pod were so helpful!

The van itself was easy to drive in, it had the perfect size for two people, not too big, not too small. We drove little Alex around New Zealand for about a month and during that time I never regretted once for choosing to rent with The Pod.

We had the most amazing journey around the South Island of New Zealand in our POD rental van it was so comfortable and convenient to travel around in whilst we were visiting family and friends. We had our own cooking facilities that were great and such a big help when we camping in the National Park areas. It was such a breeze to wake up each morning, cook our own breakfast and make plans for where we were going to POD off to each day🙂 We would thoroughly recommend booking a POD rental to anyone who wants a hassle free holiday traveling New Zealand to see the sites and wonders that this gorgeous Country has on offer 👍

We were sold on Pod after we saw their excellent video explaining how to use their campers, and with a nice and simple booking system as well as great pricing we were away! Getting to their Christchurch location was super easy (we went via bus), and when we arrived we were given a warm welcome and made to feel even more excited about our trip.

The staff were super helpful and ran through everything to make sure we were totally happy. They even gave us the chance to have a rummage through some of the items that people had left in the campers for future users - the storage tubs, jars of coffee and bag of pasta we picked up were handy!

On the road Little Sefton was great. Super easy to drive with a really comfortable seating and driving position. We did around 2,200km in just over a week and I'm glad our Pod was as comfy as it was. We took on some big hills too (especially around Milford Sound) and it handled them just fine. Slow and steady wins the race!

As far as the camping comfort goes, again we were super happy. As we were doing so much out and about we ended up just leaving the camper in "bed mode" the whole time which made life easier when we rocked up to campsites super late. The bed itself was really nice, and fitted me fine despite me being over 6ft/182cm.

We used the cooker regularly and having not used a gas cooker like that before it was surprisingly easy. Whether it was boiling water for an early morning coffee or cooking something more elaborate it had it covered.

Overall, it was an awesome experience. If you ever have any issues or queries out on the road the guys at Pod HQ are more than happy to help out which is nice and reassuring. Little Sefton was faultless throughout and allowed us to really make the most of our trip.

This little van had everything we needed, from washing up liquid, to a camping toaster and even two USB ports to charge our electronics.

The freedom of the van trip was amazing, having a self contained camper ment we could go wherever the road took us.

Any queries we had before the trip were answered promptly by the wonderful Pod team, and collecting and dropping off the van was an easy experience.

There are so many great things to say about The Pod, and it starts with the owners, Liz and Mike! Their customer service from the beginning to end of our rental period was excellent. They provided us with a ride from our hotel to their depot in Christchurch and gave us a second ride to our accommodation in Auckland after we returned the vehicle. They are also very responsive to e-mail if you need anything on your trip!

We rented a self-contained Mazda Bongo named Little Millie for a month, and we took her all over the South and North Island! What was great about the size of the vehicle is that we could easily find a spot in most parking lots and campsites without taking up too much space. To elaborate further on space, the interior and kitchen in the rear is designed very well, and we had plenty of storage space for both of us. If you’re traveling on a low-mid range budget, The Pod’s vans provide excellent value!

We posted daily videos and stories of our trip with Little Millie that show the van in action all over New Zealand. Hopefully they convince you to choose The Pod for your adventure to the most beautiful country on the planet. Our handle is @pillowpoppertravel.

Lastly, if you plan to visit Queenstown with The Pod, please meet Liz and Mike if they are around!

After a few hours of searching for campervans online, we luckily stumbled upon The Pod rentals. We called them to discuss reserving a van for a week and Liz answered the phone. We corresponded with her during the entirety of our trip and she was nothing but kind and helpful. The van was not only affordable, but provided us with everything we needed and more (including a kitchenette, toilet, ventilation, camping chairs/table, cutlery, duvet, etc. ). The company picked us up to go get our van and paid for a taxi to take us back to the airport when we were done. We could not have been more happy with the service The Pod rentals provided us with and we will definitely be using them again if we decide to plan a similar trip. We drove the van up the west coast (highway 6) and there were no issues whatsoever. If you get Little Sefton as your van, its new name is Podrick. Make sure to ask for Liz when you talk to the company because she is so sweet and attentive.

We spent two weeks in our Pod 'Little Alex', and had an amazing time! Collection and drop-off near Christchurch airport went smoothly and we had no issues at all with the vehicle throughout. The kitchen area is well equipped and easy to keep tidy, the camping chairs and table are included (unlike for some rental companies), and we just left the bed folded down the whole time as you could still access the storage space underneath easily. Bed was comfy as well, and we're both fairly tall! We had quite a few comments from other campers about how great & compact our little Pod looked! :)

Thanks Dorian - we aim to be flexible! This year we have brought in bigger campervans (Hiaces) which are all certified as self contained, and all our smaller campers are now going through a minor bed conversion so they are also all certified as self contained. Hired the pod for 3 weeks initially but extended to 5 weeks as it was so great!!
Perfect size, not too big to drive around/park. Easy to drive.

Very well designed with space to store backpacks under bed so bed can be kept down at all times. Comfortable bed.
Excellent black out curtains.

Everything we needed was included - sufficient cooking gas for entire trip, all cookware, bedding, table, chairs, esky (which works fine as fridge providing food transferred to campsite fridge overnight), ice blocks.

Staff were excellent throughout. Very responsive by email. Collection and drop off staff great. Free ride into Auckland CBD :)

I can't rate POD rentals highly enough! From the time we picked up Lil' Billy in Christchurch to when we dropped it off in Queenstown it was an amazing experience. We were given a free ride on both ends of the trip along with a fully stocked van that included all the cooking, bedding, chilly bin and even table and chairs. Little touches like a shelf in the office that had leftover condiments and other items that we could take free of charge before we started our journey. Everyone we dealt with was fantastic and supper pumped about the POD rentals. We even found that other "Pod People" in our travels would honk and strike up a conversation when they saw us. The number one thing that most people are concerned about is price and after doing a lot of research POD was cheaper than a lot of the bigger operators and came with more free of charge. The fact that there was no one way fee for us to drop off in Queenstown after picking up in Christchurch was a big factor as well. The van itself was in incredible condition and not once did we run in to any issues with it. You won't regret renting with POD!

The Pod Campervan Rentals: Our experience with this company was A Grade - we picked up our van called the "Little Sefton", we were shown thoroughly how to use the van, the staff were amazing, so friendly and helpful - everything in the van was at your fingertips and so easy to use. The bed was perfect for the 2 of us travelling and warm and cosy at night. The fuel economy was excellent, we were very pleased with that as the petrol in NZ is quite expensive to say the least, so having a little 4 cylinder van was perfect. We had a dream drive around the south island and being a small campervan we were able to access roads that were unavailable to large campervans, which was a real bonus.

My partner and I rented a pod for two weeks around the South Island. We were very pleased with the experience and heartily recommend them. First, Pod reps were timely and detailed when I emailed questions prior to booking. That is extremely important to me when assssing customer service. And I loved how straightforward and thorough the info was on their website. We felt like we knew exactly what we were getting. Prices were among the lowest when factoring in extras that other companies charged for and we never felt pressured to add anything (eg their insurance). Pick up was extremely easy. The van is solid and has mostly everything you need. We did not end up cooking hot food, so can’t comment on how well that would go. We did use the burner for coffee and it worked well, but we brought our own stove-top espresso maker. The other things to mention are that you will need to bring your own bath towel and...the pod handles like an old van. It got us around corners and up hills just fine, but you will not be passing other vehicles. Do make sure you ask for a loyalty card at every gas station you go to (fill first, then go inside to collect a card and pay). Almost all can be used immediately. The grey water tank is easy to dump. Our pod was self-contained, which was a requirement at some camp sites, although we never used the cassette toilet since each one had at least a toilet (some flush, some like a port-o-potty). Use the camper van apps, we found it very easy to find good camp sites that were free or DOC (low-cost, public).

I would highly recommend Pod Rentals! We hired our Pod 'Little Max' for 11 nights to travel around the South Island. When we started to look into campervan rentals, we had a few questions regarding the 'Self-Contained' V 'Non Self-Contained' options all of which we communicated to Mike and he was happy to assist. He also worked around some travel changes we had and helped us pick up our van from Queenstown rather than Christchurch as initially discussed.

We booked a self contained van and it was perfect for our requirements- we were very impressed with how they had managed to utilise all the space! We were met by Juuso in the Queenstown hub and he explained how to use everything and gave us lots of tips :)

During our trip, we had no problems with 'Little Max' and being self contained allowed us to freedom camp at some beautiful spots. (we did unfortunately have a stone hit the windscreen, we informed Mike and he responded straight away to let us know he would get it fixed/replaced ASAP if required). We dropped Little Max back and were met by Mike and Liz who were super keen to hear all about our trip and ask for any improvements on the van.

Overall, the service we received from all of The Pod team was fantastic.....really friendly couple who clearly care about the experience of their customers and take a real interest in making it the best experience possible.

We had a great 18 days traveling round South Island in Little Weku! The Pods are small but well thought out. We had all the equipment we needed, bed easy to pull out, good bed linen provided and is super comfy! Kitchen well organised- other campers were impressed when they had a look. We managed to find ways to store all our stuff in the small space. Staff friendly and helpful. Would absolutely recommend Pod Rentals to others. Great value camping!!

We found the Pod rentals on the internet after some searching. We booked directly on their website which was easy as. We picked up "Little Rata" in Queenstown. They were very helpful in showing us all about the vehicle. The vehicle had everything we needed for basic camping and was quite comfortable to sleep in. It was easy to drive and fairly light on fuel. We lived in the van for a week covering a fair bit of territory in the south island.
I would definitely recommend The Pod rentals. Next time we head back to NZ, we will definitely try out the Pod again.

We found the Pod rentals online after a lot of research of campervan rentals in NZ. From the moment we booked with The Pod the whole experience was seamless. Mike and Liz were so helpful from the start to the finish! We picked up “Little Lizzy” in Christchurch on Feb 1st and travelled the whole South and North island in 28 days! Little Lizzy had everything we needed - comfortable bed, storage space for our bags, cooking facilities, water etc. we never had any issues with our camper over our whole trip. Although it comes with a toilet we never used this as there are so many public toilets in NZ you don’t really need it! Definitely download the “campermate” app if traveling in NZ. This app was our savior and we used it every single day to decide where we would stay! The fact that Little Lizzy was self contained was also a huge advantage as a lot of campsites (especially the free ones) only allow for self contained vans.
We gave Lizzy back in Auckland the end of February and we were sad to say goodbye!
I would 100% recommend The Pod rentals! Thank you so much for making our honeymoon a trip to remember!!

My pod experience was great! I loved my van. There were a few problems when picking up (I had requested a manual) but within a few hours it was sorted. I had to contact them twice during my rental and they were kind and efficient both times. Really nice company to deal with. I only mark them down because when it's windy (which it can be often in NZ) cooking on the stove is a bit of a headache as its open to the elements, and a little design for a shelter on the back would make it perfect!

Reviewed 2 months ago

The Pod Campervan Rentals responds:

Thanks Heather! We are bringing in an awning to assist for the next season which should solve those wind issues! Regarding the transmission choice, unfortunately for this season unless our clients contacted us directly to specify, there was no option on our website to select an automatic or a manual vehicle. Helpfully, our booking system is now undergoing updates for the next season which will allow this. Thanks again, and we hope to see you back here one day :)

The pod rental company was very friendly and helpfull. The pods are well kitted out for the price, it had all we needed for an awesome week's camper vaning around the South Island. The pod itself looks pretty cool compared to others that are a bit of a visual assault on the eyes. We also liked that we were supporting a new company on the market. Pros
-small family owned rentals
-personal and friendly service
-hands down best flexible pick up/drop off (no one way fees and pick up from any location)
-transportation to and from their garages
-easy to contact and very helpful with anything that came up

Cons
-towels were the only thing we had to go out and buy. Would be nice if it was included with the rest of the linen

I did do a lot of research to find a suitable van for us as we didn't want anything big! I was so happy to have founs Pod rentals, from the start everything was just soo easy with them and had a much more personal feel than the other companies I contacted. Everything in their website was so simple, there was no hidden extras or anything. We had couple of small issues while (broken chair so nothing van related) driving and they helped us sooo quickly and efficiently. I would rent from these guys, the van is really well designed and perfect for 2 persons who don't need a lot of space. You can put the bed away during the day, so you have plenty of space. We had people come over to admire the van and guaranteed you won't see many of these on the road. We saw 5 during our 4 week trip! Only thing I'd like them to improve is more efficient gas cooker.

The Pod is hands down THE BEST campervan rental company. We rented the camper for 9 days and it was the best experience we could have asked for. This company is family owned by people who really care and it truly shows. We picked up our camper in Christchurch with a free ride to the building, and then dropped it off in Queenstown to the same person who met us there in person! When we picked it up, she took her time showing us every detail about it making sure we were absolutely comfortable before we left. The camper itself is perfect. My husband is 6'4" and while it was a little tight for him to drive with the pedals, the bed was a great fit for both of us. We loved the layout of the entire van and the kitchen in the back was a really great set up. We used the DOC passes from rankers which worked out great. Before choosing The Pod, I did a LOT of research on which company to go with. This company was not only the cheapest and most flexible, it was by far the best and while I had really high expectations, this company exceeded them by a ton! I'm surprised they are not more well known, but that is also the beauty of it. You really feel cared for by them and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. Stop waiting, this is the one!

Pod rental customer service was excellent. We picked up in Christchurch and were given the run-through of how to use / maintain the Pod. Drop off in QT was equally smooth and the owners dropped us off at the airport. The Pod itself was excellent and as described. The configuration of the bed, kitchen etc makes full use of limited space and can be set up with minimal effort. The Pod took us all over the South Island with no problems whatsoever. Future customers should keep in mind that the vehicles are a little old and as such the automatic gearboxes aren’t the latest technology, meaning that going up hills can be quite slow. Nevertheless this didn’t detract from our experience and we would gladly go with Pod again. Excellent customer service, excellent vehicles.

My girlfriend and I hired 'Little Kahu' from Queenstown for 10 days to explore the beautiful south island, and we can safely say it was one of the best decisions we have made on our trip.

The van drove well, it was also very thoughtfully set up and came with all the necessities, all we needed to purchase to start our trip was food and ice for the freezer bin. We really appreciated the comfy bed and user friendly kitchen which meant making meals and cleaning dishes quite easy. Even the smallest things were thought of like non slip mats for the pots and pans and a drawer that locks out so that you can access the freezer bin and use the stove without it sliding back in and a toast maker for a gas stove.

A major plus was the customer service! We had direct contact with the owners who are lovely people and are passionate about camping and helping us get the most out of our adventure. Communicating with them was a breeze, they were prompt with their replies and easily reachable throughout our whole trip despite it being peak season. This was very useful when part of our grey water waste tap came off (probably from going down some bumpy gravel roads), as we called them and they immediately reassured us and explained how we could fix the problem and continue the rest of our trip.
Luckily, we purchased the $0 excess insurance package so we did not have to pay for its repair.

Overall, you get great value and service for your money, much better than any large rental company in the region. We would highly recommend Pod Rentals to anyone else looking to explore New Zealand!

Thanks Kurt and it was great to meet you guys too. And just for others, all our locations have a 'Freebies' cupboards where previous clients leave non perishable food items (and other odds and ends like towels, insect repellents etc) at the end of their trip, so you can save yourself a few dollars before hitting the supermarket! We also give you pre-frozen icepacks to start you on your way, but a bag of ice is good to completely pack out your chilly bin before you hit the road :)

I'm not long home after nearly 2 months driving around NZ (with my partner joining me for a month of that) in 'Little Sally', and can honestly say that Pod are one of the best companies we've ever dealt with!

About the van: As a Mazda Bongo, Little Sally was a decent size - compact enough to fit in a normal parking space, and drove like a car (so you can take her down the tight, twisty roads that are common in NZ, unlike a larger motorhome), but at the same time was spacious enough and comfortable inside for the two us to live in for a longer period of time. We're both pretty tall (Ross is 6ft 4) and we had no issues fitting in! The vans are very well maintained/serviced - we covered almost 10,000km in Little Sally with no real issues. We had a few slow punctures/flats (pretty common in NZ with all the roadworks going on and dirt tracks!), which after a quick email or phonecall, were dealt with immediately by Liz and Mike, and replacements sorted for us in the next town. The van was nicely laid out, clean and fully equipped with everything we needed for our trip, including a really comfortable bed. Plenty of storage under the bed too for our two 75L rucksacks and some smaller bags.

About Pod: It's a small, family-run business, and the customer service is just amazing and felt really personal. Liz and Mike are lovely people, and really approachable - any questions/issues were dealt with straight away. I got a nice welcome and introduction to the van from Nina upon my arrival in Auckland too, and the free taxi from and to the airport at the beginning/end of our travels was a really nice touch. I did a lot of shopping around before booking a camper, and found Pod to be the best value for money for my 2 month stay.

In summary, if you're looking for a compact (and very cute) wee camper with everything you need for a trip around NZ, combined with awesome customer service, don't bother wasting your time looking at other companies and just go with Pod!

Had "Little Julie" for 2 weeks, a perfectly functional small van for 2 people. The van had all the basics we needed (gas stove, fresh refillable water, cooler box etc). There was room for our 2 suitcases and backpacks as we travelled around and we could then bring the bed down when needed in the evening, which done the job and we slept well.
The van got through countless km's all around the North and South Islands without as much as a hiccup. The power chord to give power sockets at powered camp sites did stop working towards the end of the trip, however one quick email and an offer was made to bring a replacement to us the next day (we didn't need it as we were covered for the last night but that was still providing a top service).

Overall we were perfectly happy with the van and the happy, easygoing personalities of those we met from POD rentals and would have no hesitation recommending them to anyone we know coming to NZ.

We loved our Pod Campervan “Little Weka” and has such fun touring New Zealand in her! It was great to have a small van that was easy to drive and park. The van had all the essential colour-coordinated equipment including very comfortable mattresses and beautiful linen, and chairs and a small table. We liked the blackout windows so that people couldn’t see into the van. It was also great to rent from a small family business rather than a large international. Mike made the whole booking process very straightforward and the lady who managed the pickup in Auckland couldn’t have been more helpful, and gave us a very welcome cup of tea! The one thing that would improve “Little Weka” is some insect screens for the van. However it was easy enough to buy some insect mesh from Bunnings to put on one of the sliding windows so we could have ventilation at night.
Overall a great experience that I would recommend to others!

Mike and Lucy are the sweetest business owners we've ever met! Eve and I were greeted by Mike at Nomads Backpackers in Queenstown who came to pick us up to collect our campervan (Little Milton, whom we also call as Lil' Mil :)). Upon arrival at The Pod in Frankton, we were warmly welcomed by Lucy and Bryan (the Pod promo girl). Lucy had diligently briefed us through the do's and don'ts with Little Milton. We also had a good chat with Mike and Lucy about Milford Sound which Mike sent us a helpful list of cruise providers! They've also given us tips to get cheaper groceries in the area (tip: PAK'nSAVE is just right behind Pod's office! how convenient is that).

We spent a good 14 days in Little Milton from Queenstown to Auckland and didn't encounter any issues with it! Lil' Mil' was sparkly clean inside out when we picked him up and equipped with all necessary kitchen utensils, clean duvet and sheets, camping chairs and table (major plus point), as well as fully filled freshwater tank. There is also a handbook in the van which listed down the full instructions of how to empty and refill the water tanks, setting up the bed etc. The van also comes with a chemical pee toilet (which we didn't use) that may come in handy for some people.

We met other Pods throughout our journey (Little Clyde in Mount Cook and Akaroa, Little Alex in Mount Cook, Little Tui in Wanaka and Little Mikey in Cathedral Cove). As The Pod is a relatively small company (they have 45 fleets), bumping into another Pod on the road is a rare sight! We truly enjoyed our trip in Little Milton and it couldn't be better without The Pod and Little Milton. We highly recommend The Pods to anyone who's looking for competitive priced yet fully equipped and clean campervan rentals in New Zealand!

We rented "Little Polly" for 13 days in the South Island. The owners Mike and Liz were so helpful in planning our trip. They offered to fully refund any days that had to be changed due to my changing exam schedule, which gave me confidence in renting from their company. They were very flexible, and continued to quickly respond to all of our questions over email. This personal connection made us feel comfortable renting from the Pod Campervans. When we arrived in New Zealand, everything went so smoothly. They offer complementary rides to and from the airport, which helps to reduce the stress of travelling. Our van was reliable for our whole trip, and it contained everything that we needed (gas cooker, plates, mugs, pots, pans, can opener, dish soap, clothesline, camping chairs, table, power cord, USB adapter etc.). All of these are additional costs with other companies that I found online, so it was a pleasant surprise to have all of this included in the rental price. The bed was comfortable, and there was enough room for all of our belongings. Our suitcases were able to fit under the bed, making the van feel cozy and spacious at the same time. Pod campervan rentals is a great company to work with. Owners are very kind, easy to contact, and responsive - one of the perks of hiring through a small company. Would have easily been a 10/10 but the bed in our vehicle tended to separate overnight due to a rip in the fitted sheet.

My wife and I rented "Lil Keith" for 9 nights and 10 days for our honeymoon. We were picked up in Queenstown by the owner Mike and he drove us to their office. When we got there, the other owner and Mike's wife Liz greeted us and explained the ins and outs of the campervan. They were extremely nice and helpful. We drove from Queenstown to Auckland and had an amazing experience. This was our first campervan vacation and, as far as we could tell, we had everything we needed. The only complaint that we had is that the campervan isn't equipped with any screens on the windows. One evening, on the west coast of the South Island, we had to seek sanctuary in the van because the sandflies were so bad. We had to sweat it out in the van and we weren't able to prepare dinner until after the sun had gone down and the sandflies had subsided. The rest of the trip we kept the van doors open at night to let a breeze blow through and didn't have any more trouble with insects the farther north we drove. We put over 2200 kilometers in 10 days on the van and it was the best way to see New Zealand. Thank you Mike and Liz and also Nina in Auckland. Great customer service!

Yeah the bugs can be pretty fully on at some localised places on the West Coast of the South Island in NZ! Thanks for the review and feedback Steven :)

We have night time insect screens available which provide plenty of airflow while keeping the pesky bugs at bay - these can be found in our optional extras.

Pod Campervan Rentals were absolutely fantastic. My wife and I used them for a trip in dec 2018 for a 10-day drive around the south island. Our only concern prior to this trip, being our first time in NZ, was difficulty getting a hold of anyone if we'd run into issues. On the contrary, Mike and the team were incredibly responsive at all hours of the day. Impressive even by American workday business standards. Emails would be answered within minutes, which was the original reason we were comfortable with booking through Pod. Other major pluses include incredibly reasonable prices (in fact, cheapest we found online), no "nickel and diming" - both the pick-up and dropoff processes were as easy as possible. The van itself was equipped with everything needed for our trip, and honestly probably trips longer than 1-2 months. We must have gotten a dozen complements on the setup of the van during the trip. Pod will also set up complementary rides to and from the airport; makes the whole experience easy and seamless. We will be returning to NZ in the near future and will 100% be going with Pod Campervans again; they truly made our experience as best as could be. We've already recommended to multiple friends planning trips without any solicitation from Pod's team.

After doing a lot of research, founding nice caravans but a high prices we luckily found The pod. Maybe smaller than others, but also big enough to travel comfortably, and at fair price.
it was the perfect choice.
The pod was great! Is very comfortable, everything works well, and it has all the tools you need to cook, sleep and live comfortably in it. You just have to worry of enjoying the trip.

The staff is very helpful explaining how the pod works, and trying to arrange your transportation to the pod office at the pick up time and to take you to the airport ( or hostel in our case) when you return the camper.

When we return our camper it was rainy and Mike offer us to take us to the hostel without need of asking it, we really appreciate his actitude and willingness.

After having travelled for 7 day through the South island I'm sure that the pod was the right option, the service was great and the correct/affordable price.

Thanks little Ophir , we gonna miss you.

After a lot of research and back and forth with other companies, we decided to go with Pod as they offer their vans and service at unbeatable value and were always willing to answer our many questions. Our van Little Millie had everything we needed for our 5-week trip and was a trooper getting up hills, going along miles of gravel roads and driving through little fords (water crossings).

After only a couple of days we stopped in Queenstown for our first powered site but unfortunately the cable wasn't working. However, Mike and Liz, the owners, were more than happy to accommodate us by not only refunding our night at the campsite but also our day's rental - and of course drove to us with a new cable! We also had an accident with the gas cooker, completely our fault, which left smoke damage and a melted cabinet. We were so lucky to have got full insurance and reassurance from Mike and Liz that they'd be able to fix it without additional cost to us and would try and replace the van. After a little stop in Auckland to swap vans and make our way to Bay of Islands, we felt relieved to be on the road again with no hard feelings from Pod and a lot of help. We have already recommended to friends and would definitely use them again should we return to NZ.

Thank you so much Mike and Liz, keep doing what you're doing!!

We had used the Certified Self contain from the Pod campervan for my family in Christchurch New Zealand

The Pod Campervan:
Service: Excellent....

Email :Reponse fast and ASAP.
Pickup : They booked a Greencab (free) for us , on time pick up at my accommodation.
When we arrived at the Pod Rental company, we were welcomed and briefed on the prepared clean campervan  and all the process take less 5 mins, we start off which our tour.

Drop off : It took less than 2 mins to return the campervan and the Manager immediate drove us back to our accommodation.

The Service given by Mike William, Liz William and Team are excellent.. Thank you very much.

Interior:
The Queen Size bed is just perfect for 2 Adults 1 child.
Thermal lined curtain is very useful (they design to cover the whole bed) and great (as we travel to Lake Tekapo, it start to snow in spring and we did not have Winter clothes with us).
We manage to book the Power campsite and plug in the Fan Heater. Suggestion:"It will be perfect if the Campervan come with dual batteries to run the Fan Heater if we are not able to get a Power campsite).

Exterior:
Size of the Campervan is not big but very convenience to travel in town and other places (especially we went shopping, to park for 4 hrs free, we had to drive up the multi storey carpark- height limited to 1.95 metres).

Cost :
Cost is cheap and we get the 0 excess.
Fuel consumption (estimate):12 km+/litre (normal road), but most of the time we are traveling up and down mountain road (about 10 km+/L).
70% NZ are up and down.

Condition of campervan:
Tyres are in very good condition and campervan is very well maintain.

Total distance travel 2800 km in 9 days

We were IN LOVE with our camper.
The vans are designed really well and the price is completely reasonable. The beds are spacious enough to be comfy even for one of us who is 6”3. It’s important to note that not every vehicle they have is self contained, but we enjoyed lots of nice cheap camping spots where there isn’t a need to be, and there are even free ones for non self contained as well but you have work to seek them out.
We were really happy to have a vehicle small enough to drive easily, but big enough to be everything we needed. And they really do include everything you need unlike a few of the rental companies! Huge thanks to Mike, Liz and Destiny who made our experience wonderful.

We loved traveling through the south island for 3 weeks in our self-contained pod van. The van is very comfortable for 2 with a queen bed and is equipped with almost everything you could need for cooking. The van ran well and didn't suck gas too bad. What really sets pod apart is the amazing customer service though. I emailed the owner, Mike, back and forth for a week before booking and he patiently answered all of my questions and responded quickly. A couple of days into our trip we noticed that our water tasted a little like plastic and Mike was happy to meet up with us and flush the water system a few times.
Overall the van was a great selection for us because we didn't have any issues, it was a good size, the price was reasonable, it was self contained allowing us to easily freedom camp, and because Mike answered all questions fast. A couple of additions would improve our experience even more: a plug and a screen to keep bugs out. Our van didn't have a back up battery to charge our laptop; a simple solution would be to get a converter from cigarette lighter to plug. While we traveled in the spring, I think the van would get really hot in the summer and you'd need to keep windows open so a screen would be nice to keep the darn sand flies from devouring you.

But really the van and our entire experience with pod rentals was amazing and I'd definitely recommend them. There were many thoughtful additions like clotheslines + pins, a USB charger, included camping chairs + table, lots of bedding, and kitchen utensils that made our adventure better. Book with pod rentals, you won't regret it!

The Pod van suited our needs completely. It was comfortable with a well equipped 'kitchen' in the back and plenty of room under the bed for one large, soft top suitcase, one large back pack and 2 day packs. The bed was big enough for a 6' 2" man and very comfortable. The pick up at Queenstown was a great experience - very friendly and informative. Thank you! The van was slow on the hills but that was the only downside. I liked it that it was compact and could be parked in a normal car space.

A huge thank you to pod campervans, had an unreal time in NZ and a lot of it was made possible because of the Pod and there amazing service we can't thank them enough!! We had an incident in Queenstown with someone driving up the back of us, we documented the accident and drove to the pod depot in Queenstown, we were given a new pod and were back on the road within the hour! The car was compact and very reliable allowing us to travel both north and south island without any issues! On a side note I would stress the need for full coverage insurance to avoid extra cost at the end of the trip, insurance is expensive until you need it!

Overall excellent experience and good support from Mike and Liz at Pod. The van was very comfortable, reliable and straightforward and all fittings in top condition. Everything matched what was said on the website. It’s an excellent way to see NZ and the sites we went to had good services to complement the campervans equipment.
A suggestion - it would be useful to have some easily accessible shelf or pocket, perhaps on the ceiling, to put things in at night, such as torch, water bottle, cell phone.

An absolutely fantastic company to rent from. Before our trip I did a lot of research and saw some stories from other companies of vehicles going wrong and no support/lack of support. I read about The Pod and they seemed very strong on service as well as flexiblility and price. 100% true. From the pick up in Auckland to the drop off in Queenstown (2 and half weeks, 2,600km) everything was superb. We had 'Little Keith' and it was just perfect for us, easy to drive and had everything in it we needed. Mike and Liz were superb from start to finish, everything was done quickly and nothing was too much trouble. Whilst near Kaikorua, a stone flew up and we got a small crack which started to get bigger. Liz arranged for us to drop the car in at a garage in Christchurch and 2 hours later we were back on the road with a new windscreen. We really can't say enough about the whole experience, it made our travels complete and we will not be looking anywhere else or recommending anyone else when we return next. Mike, Liz and 'Little Keith' thank you very much for everything and see you again.

The pod campervan rentals has excellent price for the quality you receive. On top of that the customer service is perfect with quick replies via e-mail, arranged pick-up and drop-offs and lovely staff; as we were travelling in the colder spring months we received extra bedding to make sure we were not cold. The pod is a relatively small campervan, but when doing research for bedding, this was actually best suitable for 1.98m long guy (6'6) as there was extra space at the end of the bed. For us this was the perfect campervan for 9 days, with a kitchen that has everything you need at the back - if you're going for several weeks on end it might be less suitable due to space restrictions.

We had a wonderfull time with pod rentals! No worries with the car except that the gears were a bit slow. Other than that, the van was in good shape and came at a good price. Friendly staff. Two small and friendly tips: the cussions kept sliding at night, so maybe make the edge of the bed a bit taller to keep them in place. Also, we got pulled up by the cops asking for our rental agreement, which we did not have. These are just minor things, and we are very pleased with the pod team.

We rented Little Alex from Pod rentals for 2 weeks. We spent 1 week on the north island and 1 week on the south island. The van was great! We would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable company. It has a simple and easy to use set-up, more than enough for our purposes. We were able to cook suitable meals and keep things cold in the esky. The bed was very comfortable and we always had a great sleep, never too hot or too cold despite big changes in temperature between the north and south island. Little Alex was a very reliable van and we never had any doubts at any point throughout the trip. The price was perfect - reasonable and much cheaper than other companies we looked at but just as reliable. All of the staff were very helpful and friendly. They provided us with maps, advice, sim cards upon arrival and were more than happy to be contacted during the trip and took us back to the airport at the end of the trip. The only thing we did wish for was a bucket or slightly bigger bowl/container to make washing a bit easier. He was super quick to respond and very informative, happy to make arrangements to help us anyway he could. All the staff we dealt with were so friendly and helpful. The van itself was great. Super clean, and everything was in perfect working order. I'll also note it was a great size, not too big or bulky to drive comfortably on back windy mountain roads, but plenty of room and comfy inside once the bed was folded down. My wife, a bun in the oven, and I, were really 3 content peas in a little Pod for about 24 days recently. I researched lots of companies and checked out most options available. I chose The Pod Campervan Rentals because it was possible to pick up in Auckland and drop off in Queenstown, the very inexpensive price, the friendliness and responsiveness of staff prior to booking, the high reviews, and though a large camper with a walk in toilet/shower and inside kitchen would be nice at times, I knew driving a large vehicle so many kilometers on windy narrow roads and parking it on city/town streets wasn't something I wanted to stress about. Honestly, before we left, my pregnant wife was a bit concerned over my decision mainly due to the lack of usable toilet at night and the thought of cooking out in the cold or wet weather which can be prevalent in late September and October. However I really felt (and hoped) this would be a good van for the price and Little Ophir absolutely didn't let me or us down. I believe we drove about 4500 km's from Auckland to Millford Sound and back up to Queenstown with a few zig zags here and there. We never had one problem the entire time we had Little Ophir, a small non-self contained Mazda Bongo. Actually, mechanically and cosmetically there were no problems at all. At this price, I expected a few quirks or odd noises here and there, but nope- nothing at all in this good ol' boy. I really liked the simplicity of the van. It had everything we needed, but didn't have so much that it was complicated or a lot of potential vacation-ruining systems to go bad. With the money we saved on The Pod, we mostly stayed holiday parks and other private campgrounds which were convenient and always available. Having a hot shower, an indoor kitchen, and a freezer to put our cold packs in made my us both really happy. The owners/staff of The Pod when we returned Little Ophir were as nice as they seemed online. A great experience. I highly recommend The Pod.

From start to finish, Pod rentals was superb. Rented the van for 8 days travelling around South Island, and it had everything we needed. The van was easy to drive; clean and compact but still roomy enough inside to sleep 2 adults comfortably. It also had a fully stocked kitchen area, with camper stove, 3 gas cannisters, utensils and pots/pans. Whilst we didn't freedom camp during our trip, it was nice to know we could given the van we rented was fully self-contained. Also added nice touch was 3 camping chairs and camping table, an option not always available for free with other companies!

Be under no illusions though, Pod rentals is a budget van, they're older than many others on the road & can be a bit heavy on the fuel if driving loads of mountain passes like we did, but they are exceptionally well maintained and had everything we needed. I can't we recommend highly enough!

Nick and Liz were fantastic, they couldn't do enough to help us, including shuffling other rentals around to ensure we could have our desired dates.

The Pod was lovely and clean and even had usb chargers & and aux cable available. The one downside was the lack of engine size in the van. We found that it would take a bit longer to get to places because we couldn't get up speed on some of the hills. Still this gave us more time to take in the view and was probably better for the environment. The glaciers have melted so much already we don't need to be adding to it.

We had a lovely experience with little Polly (our van). Comfortable, clean and cute we had a amazing time from Queenstown to Christchurch.

Mike and Liz helped us and was very communicative for every request or question we had.

Also they help you to pick you up and bring you to your Accomodation.

The van is easy to drive and you get everything inside that you need : comfy chairs, a good bed (warm blanket and fluffy pillows), an amazing kitchen with can opener, good knife and even a toaster :)

At the beginning we were a bit worried about the speed and the power of the car, but Little Polly made everything easy with a lot of fun through the west coast and at the end she did Arthur’s Pass.

They also have a book with all the use of everything in the van, and a book with all of the good tips from the travelers before you. (Of course we filled this course as well :))

We highly recommend you to rend a Campervan with Pod Rental.

We spent 2 months travelling from Queenstown to Auckland in our Little Lola and we really loved it. It's small, easy to park in town and easy to drive on narrow roads and gravel roads. We had only one technical issue (a damaged tyre) and the insurance paid directly the garage.
The Pod is very well equipped, the bed very comfortable. Except for the sink pump ( we bought a basin to wash the dishes ) the kitchen is very handy. It would be fine also if the stove could be protected from the wind.
We enjoyed small details like the tinted windows, the black curtains, the line cloth and pegs, the tarp... All was brand new, exactly like in the video.
The only problem was with the toilet, which is not useful since it can't be used at night. Or else, since there is toilet on board (and grey water tank) we wonder why the Pod is not self-contained?
But altogether we have been very happy, like two peas in a pod! Moreover, at the beginning we had trouble with the paiement and the staff was very helpful on the internet. We heartily recommend it.

The Pod Campervan Rentals responds:

Thanks Laure - we agree that we should be self contained as well, but unfortunately the rule makers see things differently at present ;-) We still meet the requirements for the cheap Department of Conservation camp sites so the toilet is necessary to access these sites. The Pod was a great campervan for two people. The kitchen space had a great set-up and the small size of the vehicle helped us reach some isolated back roads. The only negative was cold air that entered the front passenger area from below the seat.

Awesome rental company ! We spent almost two months driving around New Zealand with our Pod and loved it! Easy to drive, cozy, well equiped (cooking utensils and gas stove bed linens, clothes line & pins...), very comfortable bed. Having a fresh and grey water tanks was very handy. It also is the company with the best insurance deal.
The staff was really friendly and helpful, answered our questions immediately. We had an issue with a rock stuck behind the break pads, they were very helpful and covered all costs.

The Pod was a great way to get around New Zealand and camp. We really liked having the kitchen in the back of the van. The bed was comfy although we had to figure out the best configuration for the seat pads so they wouldn’t come apart. It was slow going uphills, but overall we had a great experience and liked the van. Three camp chairs and a table were included. They provided free airport pick up and drop off which was great and we were able to pick it up in Christchurch and drop it off in Auckland.

1. fuel efficiency is good
2. Awesome that it’s automatic
3. We didn’t have any mechanical issues, very recently been serviced, clean and was in excellent working order.
4. The instructional video was very helpful.
5. We were not provided with a duvet initially but we purchased one and the company were very quick to reimburse us for this omission.
6. The squabs were uncovered and didn’t fit the bed space either there was an overlap between two squabs with a big lump or there were huge gaps between.
7. The ventilation is limited at night with two people breathing it would get very humid in there and if it’s raining it’s not really practical to keep a window cracked.
8. It would be much more useable if there were some way of having a tiny table/ledge in the seating space to rest food/drinks/entertainment on.
9. The blackout curtains and the tinted windows were excellent at making it dark inside and provide good privacy. It would be good to have little bungee cords or similar to hold the curtains down against the inside of the windows when closed as they make the bed space smaller by hanging straight down
10. Not having a fridge is quite limiting
11. I think it would be helpful to specify if you want the cassette toilet or not. Since the van isn’t certified as self-contained it doesn’t need to be there all the time anyway and it’s quite bulky and heavy to transport around if you don’t use it. I know it seems like a necessary selling point on the surface but public toilets are generally in excellent order, plentiful and well signed throughout NZ so we never needed it.
12. A small camping kettle would be a very welcome addition to the kitchen.

My husband and I had an awesome time touring around New Zealand for a month in our little Pod! We did a ton of research on campervan rentals before our trip and decided on Pod Rentals because it seemed like the best value for the price. We were not disappointed! Yes, it's an older van and sometimes has a little trouble on the hills, but we weren't in a rush. The van design, especially the kitchen in the back, is excellent and was well-equipped with everything we needed to cook all of our meals. My only suggestion was to double check the van has everything before you take off. Ours had an interior light out and was missing one of the hose adapters which was a little annoying to discover at the point we were out of water and needed to refill. Other than that, everything was fantastic. Highly recommend!

We got our Pod from Queenstown airport for 2 weeks.

Rang ahead to ask some questions. Woman on the phone was very nice and we eventually did get our manual transmission.

Price is a bit more than one or two competitors in the area but going on reputation and what was included we were happy with out decision.

Pros:
Comfortable for 2 people.
Audio cable included
Booklet with info was helpful
We had everything we needed in the van: bed, linen, pillows, cooking supplies etc. We really didn't need to bring anything else with us.

Cons:
The vans are about 20 years old and are a bit thirsty on petrol. We only got about 300kms out of a tank on average and it was around $80 to fill. Not sure how that compares to cars or newer vans.
Central locking would have been good too but we never had any issues with security.
The only appliance we felt was missing was a usb charger for the cigarette port.

Unforgettable experience in Little Tui! I travelled all across NZ for 5 weeks with my 5yo kid and I couldn’t have asked for better! Perfect van, no mechanical issue, everything inside was brand-new, comfy bed (my kid slept like a king, better than home 😂😂😂) and especially the kitchen area was super organized compared to the other rentals I saw around. Exceptional customer service, during the trip I called them multiple times with weird random questions, and they were always ready to help. Plus, I booked only a week in advance, asking for a manual van, but they have only 1 or 2 and were not sure they could help. When I got the van, it was manual 😅Sharron you are star!

We loved exploring New Zealand in our Pod. My boyfriend and I rented the van for two weeks to road trip around the South Island in Dec 17 to Jan 18. We hired an automatic and it was very easy to drive - a little slow going up hill but otherwise perfect for negotiating New Zealand’s winding roads. Before making the booking I spoke to staff on the phone and sent multiple questions via email and everyone was very helpful. They accommodated changes in our drop off location at no extra cost. When we picked up the van in Queenstown, the staff member was from another rental company and literally just handed over the keys and couldn’t answer any questions. We were able to work it all out for ourselves pretty easily and the instruction manual is very comprehensive. From looking at the photos of the van it was better than expected we we picked it up - clean, simple and had everything we needed. The bed was reasonably comfortable but with four seperate mattresses put together to create the bed, it meant we were often sleeping in a gap which wasn’t great. There’s plenty of room to store your bag, etc underneath the bed. The van includes an aux cord so you can play music and you should be able to plug your charger cord in while you are driving to keep your phone charged. We used the gas cooker in the kitchen a couple of times - it was very easy to use - but the pump sink was quite annoying to operate so we just used the sinks at the campsite. The tinted windows (and curtains) of the van were great for privacy. It was considerably more affordable than other camping vans and seeing other vans on the road we think the Pod was good value. Overall we had an amazing time in our Pod and think it was the perfect way to travel around New Zealand.

We liked our little Reefton very much. It's not the fastest nor cheapest to run ( 12l/100km ) - too bad there is no diesel options. But at the end we liked it. Since its lot smaller than most other campervans you can drive it a bit off road as well. Had to wait for more than hour at Auckland airport for the pick up..

Reviewed about 2 years ago

The Pod Campervan Rentals responds:

Thanks for the feedback Michal - unfortunately in NZ we are required to pay road user charges for diesel vehicles, so the cost to our clients would be too high. I was disappointed to hear about the wait you had in Auckland, and I can assure you that this has been addressed for the next time you visit.

Update July 2017 - Due to this comment from Michal and a couple of other complaints, we have moved our location in Auckland to Aerodrive. These guys provide twenty four hour parking at Auckland Airport and run a shuttle to and from the terminal which will be at no cost to our Pod clients. We are looking forward to a much improved service with no lengthy waiting times :-)

The Pod was great value and should be your choice if you want to spend your hard earned money on the experience of New Zealand, not on none essentials. Yes it is a basic unit - but it had everything we needed for daily living for 7 weeks of cooking, sleeping and discovery rather than being isolated in a larger self contained unit. The van took us reliably all over NZ, both north and south islands from beaches to mountain tops, lakes to forests. It may not be as big and fast as some, but is sure and steady and the Pod's small size makes driving narrow winding highways or gravel roads into wind swept beaches a much easier experience than in those bigger vans, and all while saving hundreds of dollars in gas and camping fees. The service from Pod was excellent - handling our inquiries, changes in schedule and a small mechanical issue quickly, professionally and always with the clients foremost!

We rented Little Julie for just over 5 weeks on South Island and loved the van and NZ.

We had a fantastic time in the van, it was small and basic but had everything that you need. The cooking station out the back was well set up with most of the things we needed and it was really nice to cook on outside. The van was self-contained yet really good value, which means it was possible to camp in the free campsites, which we thought were some of the most beautiful in New Zealand. It was the perfect combination of simple, yet with everything we needed and we would definitely 100% recommend! The bed was spacious and comfy and we had a lot of room underneath to put our backpacks and space to store food in the van.

The only downside really was that it wasn't possible to sit up in Little Julie when the bed was folded away, but from speaking to other people we met in campsites in different Pods I think this was just our van, and when it was sunny and warm this didn't really matter to us! We would have loved a solid table though. Although we initially had a problem as only one speaker worked, we contacted the Pod company and they were so helpful and quick and got it fixed the next day at a really convenient location for us which was fantastic!

We loved our van and everything was so easy and all the staff at The Pod Campervan Rentals were very friendly and so helpful to us, including posting something back to England! We would definitely recommend and were so sad to part with our van at the start of March.

We rented the Pod Little Ophir for 35 days in JanuaryFebruary 2017 and drove around 4500km.
It was an absolute brilliant experience without a single issue with the van. They are still quite new (Ophir had 65 000km before we had her) and do not burn up petrol like others (we had a 10L/100km average).

The cabin is comfortable enough with audio provided (automatic drive for Ophir) but beware if you are too tall, you might get a bit twisted if driving for too long.

Everyone we met throughout our trip told us how jealous they were of the kitchen setup! Truly the design is impressive. It's still bear necessities but looks luxurious ahah!
The only that sucks in the kitchen part is the cooler bin. We had to buy ice every day to keep food cool even if the temperature outside was not quite warm.

The bed is comfy and mattresses do not move around if you put them in perpendicular of the van alignment.

With pod vans, you can do freedom camping as you please (since you're self-contained) but you won't be using the provided toilets, just look for public ones.

Also Great service from Sharon! Thank you again!

I loved my 'Little Milly' Pod campervan! It had everything I needed on my sole 9 day trip around the south part of the South Island and everything was of good quality.
The only thing I would say is that the bed gets a bit hard after a few hours of sleep, but that said I did sleep very well!
Also, maybe it's the height of these vans, I have no comparison to others but I found that in strong winds, keeping the van in the middle of the lane becomes quite an intense steering exercise. Otherwise it was a comfortable drive.
All in all the Pod is the best value for money campervan I have seen and I was very happy with my experience.

We absolutely loved the two weeks we spent driving around the South Island in our Pod (Little Sefton). It was so easy to drive and park being a bit smaller but still had plenty of space for everything. Kitchen set up is great and the bed was very comfortable for two. Would definitely hire again, thanks so much to Sharon and the team for everything!

The pod campers are basic yet felt like a nice home for the two weeks we had it. The vehicle itself was in good condition the only issue one stereo speaker was broken and audio quality was poor. The back was comfortable for sleeping but it is not the kind of van that you can sit in or stand in (probably not the best for wetter or colder months). The utilities in the back were also good camper stove and all you need for cooking and storage of some cold goods in the esky/chilly bin. Overall good for the price we paid and happy with he experience. Thank you pod campervan rentals.

We had an amazing trip through the North Island with Little Lucy. Although it was mid winter and very cold outside, the bed was very comfortable and warm. It is the perfect size for two people and provided everything we needed including plenty of storage. Pick up and drop off were easy and stress free at Auckland Airport. Thanks for a great trip!

Pods are great for the money and are certified self-contained. Unfortunately, the bed is not supportive and has crevices. Also, you must have the back hatch open for cooking which lets sandflies in. Overall, very good budget option. Would use again!

The Pod Campervan Rentals responds:

Thanks Graham, we appreciate the feedback. Last season we introduced elasticated mattress covers and top sheet to hold the bed squabs together and had received some really good feedback on these, so it's disappointing to hear this was not the case for you. Unfortunately the mozzies are part of life in NZ, particularly in the South Island, so we would recommend Pod travellers have spray repellent handy to take care of the little blood suckers and make life that much more comfortable :-) Look forward to seeing you another day.

My husband and I rented Little Lucy in January and loved her! She was comfortable, easy to drive, and perfect for a 2 week South Island road trip. We met several friends also travelling by campervan and were lucky to see their different set-ups with different companies. However, I really liked the Pod. The kitchen in the back keeps everything organised with the food storage and drawers, so it felt like a little moving home instead of becoming messy. For our budget and first trip in a campervan, this was perfect. Great service by Pod in booking. Highly recommend!!

We had a fantastic experience driving around the South Island of New Zealand. What an incredibly stunning destination.

We rented the automatic Little Kahu, which was big enough for the two of us. The front cab is spacious and comfortable for long drives and it's very easy to handle and pretty nippy going along the flats. The carpentry in the van is excellent, the use of space is brilliant, loads of storage room and the kitchen setup in the back is great, a pleasure to cook in, and having running water is a bonus - what more could you need? Everything slots in well, including cool box and cooking equipment.

It's really nice to see small companies like Pod Campers deliver more of a personal service, that makes you feel like a human, rather than trying to rip you off at every hurdle. There were no hidden costs like many others on pick-up, and the informative video showed you everything you needed to know. We even watched it before grabbing the van so that we didn't need to wast any time at the pick-up.

After the booking, I contacted Pod Campers to thank them and provided them with feedback on how I think they could improve the setup of the van a little. I hope they take action to add these little improvements, that would help to make your holiday easier and even more spectacular. The communication was great, really friendly and appreciative. If I was to go to NZ again (or know of anyone else going) I would not recommend any hire company other than Pod.

Thanks guys!

Awesome Dan - thanks for the feedback. We loved the suggestions and have already included extra internal shelving and storage inside all of our new vans and we are retro fitting the old ones. We really appreciate suggestions like these so we can make the Pod experience all that more comfortable. Loved all of your Instagram shots as well :-)

Really nice little camper with everything we needed, pick-up and drop-off couldn't have been easier, especially given it was a one way trip. What was quite unique was being able to speak to people who genuinely try to make the trip as hassle free as possible and help out any way they can, really appreciated it!

My friend and I had Little Nate for two weeks and loved our experience. We had a huge mess-up at the beginning though when it turned out Little Nate was a manual van and not the automatic we requested. We both didn't know how to drive stick, so it was a big safety issue. However, we had no option other than to learn stick while driving Little Nate, since it was peak season, and everything else was booked out including all car rentals, buses out of Picton, hostels and hotels, etc.

The owners wrote to us at the end of the trip and apologised for the mistake and gave us a refund of half of what we paid for our rental. We appreciated their personal email and how they handled the situation. Initially, it wasn't handled so well, but they certainly made up for it in the end and we would be happy to rent a Pod Campervan again in the future.

I can't imagine three people with their bags to be comfortable in Little Nate, but it was perfect for two of us! The cushions are really comfortable, although they slide apart a lot, even with the mattress cover on. The duvet is really comfortable and way better than sleeping bags. The kitchen was pretty awesome although the sink water pump was really cumbersome to use. It would be convenient to have mesh pockets on the ceiling to put stuff in before falling asleep. And a mini-squeegee in the front to wipe away all the condensation from the windows each morning.

We really love that the Pod Campervan Company is locally-owned and small. The pick-up and drop-off locations are convenient. Overall, our experience was pretty fabulous and we look forward to our next road trip in NZ!

We had a great little van for two peas in a pod - Little Lucy. She drove well and got us all the way from Queenstown to Fiordland and back. Easy pick-up and drop-off. Great set-up inside, easy to use. Clean and tidy. Friendly and helpful owners. Kiwi owned which is great. Highly recommended, and we will definitely book with Pod Rentals again!!

We found The Pod only because of a tip from another company in the North Island who suggested splitting the rentals between both islands to save us ferry and relocation costs. When contacting Pod they were very friendly and helpful. Although maybe not the cheapest, you really get your money's worth: the campervan was really well maintained and all the stuff inside looked and felt pretty new. We definitely LOVED the comfy mattress and especially the cosy blanket (instead of sleeping bags) which really saved us as this year's summer (at least the days when we visited) has been really cold, especially at night. Thus the bed felt more like being in a hotel than in the back of a van ;) The black curtains are really perfect for keeping out the light.
Small matter: the cups and plates weren't really clean in the beginning (cups smelled of beer) but that wasn't really Pod's fault since we picked up the van at a campground in Christchurch and it was the people there who were supposed to have cleaned it before handing it out to us. And even then they offered to clean it again (which we had done ourselves directly) and instantly replaced the mini-fridge that wasn't working.
Apart from that we instantly fell in love with our 'Little Lucy' and really enjoyed travelling the South Island with her. She might not be the fastest climbing the Southern Alps, but then again we were there for travelling and seeing things rather than rushing by.
I would have loved meeting the owners in person to tell them what a good job they do. It's really all brand new stuff inside and you feel that the cars are taken care of.
I would definitely recommend renting a Pod campervan even though you can only travel the south in them (in the end we were really sad to leave Lucy at the Picton ferry terminal, we would have rather taken her with us).
Thanks to Pod Campervan Rentals for giving us comfortable and well-maintained wheels to explore this amazing country with! It has been a wonderful trip!

I travelled New Zealand over Christmas with my Dad and my brother. I fell in love with our Pod - 'Nate'. A perfect icon to represent our trip when we look back at the memories. Such a great set-up and so comfortable (my brother can attest to this as he spent every road trip fast asleep in the front seat!). I would, without hesitation, use The Pod again above any others - could easily fit 3 girls on a road trip around NZ!

We picked up 'Nate' on 19 December 2013 from Queenstown and spent the next week travelling up to Christchurch - our drop-off point. There was myself (much closer to 60 than 50), my daughter in her early 20s, and my teenage son - he slept in his tent. The Pod was excellent. Service on pick-up and drop-off was great and my dealings with head office excellent.

We have just finished a three week tour of New Zealand in our Pod. The service was amazing, from when we first emailed questions right through until we returned Little Jess. We loved our trip and are already planning our next holiday with The Pod. Little Jess had everything we needed for camping, she was easy to drive and cheap to run. Would recommend this to anyone who wants a really high quality camper that is not expensive :-)

These are fantastic wee campers!! The two of us traveled around NZ in 'Little Meg' one of the black Pod vans. It was great, we loved this camper and really enjoyed our time in it. We got most things with it such as toilet, gps, ect and all the bedding we could need. We were able to cook in the back of it and the way the bed was set up was pretty cool.

I would recommend these guys to everyone. Easy to hire and the owners are just your typical nice kiwi people.
