Arrived super late so it was pitch black meaning we parked in the complete wrong spot (don’t park near the boat ramp!!). It was our first night in our camper so weren’t familiar with coromandel council strict rules. Otherwise it was a gorgeous spot. Toilets were super clean. Ranger came and had a chat about where to park and warned us about a fine but he was lovely and gave us some pamphlets to help us on our trip. Would definitely recommend but just park in the right spot!
Such a beautiful quiet spot by the estuary. Clean toilets a wee walk from the freedom camping site. Lots of native bird song. Would definitely stay here again!
Pleasant place to stay, parked overlooking the estuary. Toilets were a 5 minute walk away and were very clean
Fantastic, just s short walk to excellent toilets and sheltered cooking heaps of room
Arrived in the dark and the road appeared to be closed (flooding?) We ended up parking in the regular parking for the night as no one was around, but not entirely sure this was ok! But we weren’t bothered by anyone so worked for us.
Reine Geldmacherei.
Beautiful area, worth staying here just for the beach! Limited space available for overnight campers and this space is reduced further still as you're requested to leave a 3 meter gap between vehicles. There were quite a few mosquitoes. Toilets with a handwashing sink only approximately 3 minutes walk.
Gross field with campers parked door to door about 12 vans and more arriving and leaving til late. The location is around the corner from beautiful cooks beach but wouldn't recommend unless just staying a night as close to things.
Beautiful setting just by Cooks beach, toilets a 5 minute walk away and barbecue area. No water supply here and very limited parking space, only room for about 7 campervans in the designated area. We were very lucky to get a spot arriving at 5pm, as lots of others arrived just after and there was no room left. Parking is in a field with a hedge behind it so more sheltered than other campsites on the coast. Overall very nice location, make sure you get there early to reserve a spot!
Nice spot near a nice beach! Away from traffic. I arrived early thinking it would be busy, but there was still plenty of room until the early evening. Short walk to the toilets. No shower. (February 2020)
Large grassy area with less than 10 spaces. We arrived at around 12pm and it was already half full (early December 2019). There are toilets 5 min walk away but we’re quite smelly. The small river next to the site had wild dolphins in it and we were able to swim with them! (But a local girl said that was rare, so don’t get your hopes up)
Beautiful area to camp near the beach/inlet. Only a small area to fit campers in with a short walk to the toilets.
Fairly sheltered from the wind.
Beautiful place to camp and free! Ranger was very friendly too
Absolutely beautiful find on the bank of the estuary/beach. Clean toilet and picnic benches to use. Long way down the road from the town but nice and quiet
The big German family
The place is wonderful! Quite, clean and public toilets. Beach nearby. We arrived at nighttime and did not realise that all places were gone (it’s quite a large grassy area but less then 10 places). We had a note at the car the next morning, the ranger was obviously around that night. He did not wake us up, no penalties as well (Thank you, unknown ranger!). We liked it a lot!
Lots of campers already there in February. We asked someone to move to make room and they very kindly did so. Others arrived later than us and parked in a second row. Toilets a bit of a walk and no view
The place is pretty good. Spot itself doesn't have a beatiful view but within 5 min walking distance you can enjoy a really amazing landscape. The ranger (or however you call him) came 8am in the morning to check if any vehicles park outside the designated place for sc cars and if all are sc. There were 3 parked out of the sign area and he gave them just a warning. In a line between arrows there were 9 vehicles parked (3m distance was not maintained though). We asked the ranger if two lines can be formed and he said yes, as long as it is inbetween arrows and before the the road. So in total I guess 12 vehicles can park there, maybe 18 if you nicely squeeze. Toilet and bbq within 2min walking distance. According to what locals said the ranger visits often.
Visited this place 2 years ago in the main holiday season and it was busy but not as cramped as tonight with 13 vans. Great location but with such a small area its too busy and not my idea of freedom camping. Last time we met two great NZ couples who we are still in contact. but tonight there are too many vans here and I'm not sure how some of the cars are self contained. Trouble is this will have a negative effect on freedom camping. Overall great location but too cramped and well used.
Problem is its near Cathedral Cove, maybe if there were a few more sites it would take pressure off this location.
6/10 due to overcrowding.
Good place to stay for free. Very quiet but also no lights. The toilets are very far off, especially if you have to find your way at night. They were clean though. There was also a play ground and cooking area with a nice view.
There were much more campers than the actual 6 available spots, so it was quite crowded.
It got very cold at night (maybe we were just unlucky) and there were lots of mosquitos.
The town was empty and all the shops were closed early, no opportunity to get food in the evening.
I didn't feel like this place was amazing... You have to park in a field next to several houses, and the toilets are a bit far away if you want to go there the night. Also there was not enough place for us so we stayed outside the 2 arrows (we didn't have anywhere else to go and it was already the night), like another campervan... Nothing happened to us though
Public toilets 3 minutes walk and picnic tables too. Very quiet.
Stayed over one night, it’s ok, nothing spectacular. Toilets are quite a walk, if rainy (like for us) the road is dirty, so put on good shoes. Ok for 1 night.
Beautiful and very quiet location, pass the toilets and picnic tables and follow the signs. Get there EARLY as it fills up quickly. There is space for 6-7 campervans; but make sure you park between the signs only, as there is a lot more space of grass but you are not allow to stay there (which is a shame).
Toilets are about 3 min walk. Get insect repellent as you are parking by the river and there is a lot of mosquitoes at night.
Perfect little spot to free camp, room for 4-6 in the designated area. As the review before says- the location is around the corner, in a field, just follow signs. Toilet facilities a short walk.
Really beautiful location right on the bay. The parking is on a large patch of grass. A bit far off the main road but a good alternative if the cathedral cove is full.
Be aware that the location of this freedom camping site has been moved since earlier reviews, it’s not right next to the toilets and river but instead follow a signs to the nearby field. Means approx a 3 minute walk to the toilets (clean), not much of a view in the new location but a handy stopover. Not very clear about how many vehicles can park here, it says between two signs with three metre gaps between vans. Would only leave room for four but there were about six when we stayed there. Useful to get to Cathedral Cove and hot water beach.
River view, quiet, very near beautiful beach. nice bike ride into village. but only one very badly stocked shop. Toilets & BBQ place a 2 min walk. We were 6 campers.... & it was tight!
Really nice location by an inlet near to a good beach. Clearly signposted space for a few vans (there were about 5 on the night we stayed). Ranger came round early in the morning to check vans were self-contained and camping was in the correct place. Toilets clean but about 300m away, next to picnic tables and barbeques. No drinking water. Very peaceful place.

This is by far the most beautiful beach and cove we ever saw. A welcome escape from the touristy, crowded nearby Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove. I strongly recommend coming here - just so that you can have the chance to walk from the campsite up to the stream mouth at the far end of the beach. The village is small and mainly consists of unoccupied holiday homes so is very peaceful. There is a great Scottish owned fish and chip shops as well as a general store and a liquor store. We came in November 2016 and would have happily stayed longer! Enjoy!!
Follow the signs at the end of Captain Cook Road, passed the boat ramp, to a tranquil parking place on grass, on the edge of the estuary. Room for 4-5 campers between the signs. There were four campers both nights when we stayed in the first week of May.
Emplacement très sympa.
Vue imprenable sur la rivière.
Balançoire artisanale en contre-bas
Free camping, fabulous views of the river and bay. Right by the water. Very clean toilets, no showers, self contained campers only.
Good place and quiet (4 vehicles places on the grass). Toilets are close, a 3 minute walk. You have also a place to cook for free with some tables for eating at.
Great secluded spot. Real bonus is it's next to free BBQ grills and overlooking the river inlet.
Pleasant free camping.
Amazing, very nice place.
