Freedom Camp just off State Highway One right on the beachfront, within the vicinity of the well known and consistent 'Meatworks' surf break. It's a top spot!
Note - Trains roll past here at least once a night. Can cause a fright!
Meat works is located about 14km north of Kaikoura, turn right at the grave yard down onto Kiwa rd
Please note: This area is currently being abused by campers and risks being restricted for Campers. Abuse of the areas means leaving rubbish, excluding other users, lighting fires, not being self contained and using the grass area for toilets. There have also been thefts and threats to adjacent property owners. Under sized shellfish shells were also noted in some of the campfires.
We ask that all users of the area consider these points, and not camp here if you wish to spoil the area.
New advice from Council:
There is no restriction to camping in this location but please note it is not a formal camping site, with no camping facilities. If you camp there, it is at your own risk, and Kaikoura District Council takes no responsibility for using the area. Please do not light any fires, leave waste or enter adjacent private land. We ask that you become familiar with recreational fishing regulations.

Fantastic spot, sunsets over the mountains and sunrise over the Pacific, plenty of space along scrub land beachside to find you a secluded spot, frequented by surfers, you wont be disappointed with this spot. As of Dec 1st 2017 road works lorries nearby, but sunrise was 5:45am and they didn't start until 6am.
Absolutely stunning location right on a gorgeous beach with standard, clean enough drop toilet. The only problem is that the track to get to it is now the main route for all the roadworks vehicles repairing the road north after the earthquake. This meant heavy trucks passing backward and forwards metres away from us all night, we're not normally that bothered by road noise but this was pretty bad. I'd recommend ear plugs or find somewhere else to stay until the road is done. When it is I reckon this place would be 10/10.

With a view like this, you can't go wrong. Along the length of the beach there is plenty of space for self contained vehicles. Not too far from Kaikoura.
Very nice spot, 15minutes driving. Beautiful view on the beach, perfect for dinner or breakfast. Clean toilet. No rubbish bin, sad to see a bag of rubbish left by previous campers ...

Amazing free location right in front of a great surf break. 10 minute drive to Kaikoura. Toilet clearly hasn't been maintained in awhile - no toilet paper, hand sanitizer needs topping up and it clearly needs emptying - but considering everything Kaikoura has gone through in the last few months it is understandable.
Very nice place with panorama over the beach.
Wow what a spot! Right on the ocean. Self-contained only. Only one long drop toilet. PLEASE PICK UP YOUR RUBBISH! Had to pick up some cans from many of the fire pits. Stunning views.
Very popular site, even in the middle of winter. Sadly a fair bit of rubbish about means this site will probably be closed soon. Didn't utilise the toilet as we parked a fair way away from it, lots of fire pits however there is a total fire ban. Regardless, it is a very beautiful spot and my favourite sunrise of the trip!
One of the best camping spots we stayed at on the our trip. Waking up to the sunrise there was amazing. Couldn't ask for more from a free camp site.
Exactly what we were looking for. Right by the beach, the view stunning, falling asleep to waves breaking on the rocks, this is what freedom camping is all about. Toilet was adequate and done the job. Was not expecting such along stretch along the beach where you can pick and choose your spot. Was very relaxing. There were 2 other campers by us and no one had abused the beach resources, grounds or left any litter while we were there. z
We at Rankers NZ, love to meet travellers on the road and share in some of the freedom. That's why Rankers NZ invites you to come and stay for free at our chill riverside overnight parking area in the Motueka Valley at the top of the South Island.
Dirty ground. Perhaps too many campers stayed here. Or people who just like to spend some time at the lookout? They litter. It is right near a cemetery. But apparently that does not deter people to come and stay the night. Not a big space overall. Just enough for two or three vans, perhaps. Unless we do not see further. We arrived late at night and leave early in the morning after some biking around. It is near the train tracks. But it did not bother our sleep that night. No public toilets.
Almost got stuck in the grassy mud here. Plenty of campers and we went in winter. Decided to stay further up the coast instead.
Stayed twice in the last week. Great spot, plenty of space. Mostly flat. Amazing sunrises.
