Roger from Wales
Site is on the left heading from Rotorua. Is signed as a rest area. On a small gravel road that has little traffic and is very quiet at night. As others have mentioned there is a river running around two sides of the site. There is a picnic bench and a toilet that was reasonable. Due to the drought the water tank was empty. There were horses there when we arrived in the twilight but they had gone in the morning but had left some droppings. There was quite a lot of animal poo on the site as there are free roaming animals. Despite this we enjoyed our stay. About 4 cars drove along the road early in the morning before we got up.
The bathroom here is diabolical. 7 minutes up the road (east) is Ruatahuna. Right next to the gas pumps is an immaculately clean unlocked public toilet. I spent the night here, admittedly peed at the sight, but did my other "business" up the road at the gas station. Super quiet spot right by a stream, someone's horse was munching away when I arrived. Got a great night's sleep, would stay again.
Nice place by the river. Toilet was dirty and you need to bring your own toilet paper. Not much traffic on the road.
Cool location by the stream. Plenty of space. Few fire pits if you want to make a fire. A few sandflies in the morning, but nothing bad. Careful of the cows and horses on the drive in from the national park, also a bit of cow poop close to the stream.
Beautiful campsite right next to a river. River is good for swimming and washing. Longdrop toilet is there, even with toilet paper. Drinking water is only available from a spring 500m up the road. Free roaming horses.
Beautiful setting beside pretty stream but also right beside road so we were nervous to stay there alone and also worried about road noise. Also the toilet has been removed leaving just a hole in the long-drop toilet stall. If you are self contained and with a friend it would be lovely place to stay
