The people are friendly and there is a relaxed pace of life.
Tucked under the mountain - Mt Egmont/Taranaki, the township is bisected by the fast flowing mountain "Patea River". There are magnificent parks and walkways. Visit the Percy Thomson Art Gallery or watch the world famous Glockenspiel where Romeo and Juliet play out their roles four times daily at 10.00am,1.00pm, 3.00p.m and 7.00pm.
The mountain offers spectacular scenery and bush walks within fifteen minutes of the township. Plus there are a number of tourist attractions in and around the district.

Don't be put off by the fact that there are no indications about freedom camping. We spent a night there without any hassle. Would not stay longer as there is not much to see or do in town. Toilets are clean and open 6am-6pm, but there are 24 h toilets approx 10 mins walking distance from the site. Site is beside the road, but really quiet at night.

Felt strange pulling up to a roadside carpark that didn't have any indications of freedom camping. All we did was cook dinner and sleep, was perfect for that. Very quiet, a few cars early in the evening but reasonably quiet after 8pm. Felt very safe a secure with 3 young children.

Stayed here a night without problems. Toilets close at 6 but there are toilets in town open all night.
Great spot next to the park. Great for a morning walk. Public toilets nearby which are clean.
It's just a parking lot. The toilets are closed from 6pm to 6am. A lot of people and cars going around because there is a nightclub in front of the parking lot.
Just a carpark in the town, a lot of people walking around car in the morning. There have no sign to show is a campsite and the public toilet closed on 6pm to 6am.
Easy spot, public toilets open 24 hours are under clock in town, or day light hour toilets at corner of war memorial arch. Pleasant with all amenities.
Great little spot next to the town park. Relatively easy to find (not far from the local tourist info centre). Benches just next to the spaces with a stream/river flowing past. Very peaceful at night and felt very safe. There are public toilets near by (very clean) but only open during daylight hours.
