Lovely spacious site with the best view of the mountains. This morning they are lightly sprinkled with snow and make a breathtaking view with my morning cup of tea. There were about 6 campers parked up with the night we stayed but heaps of space between everyone so privacy is maintained. Definitely worth the 12k drive out of town.
Very peaceful place to stay. The view is amazing - best view from all the places we stayed. Bathrooms were closed during winter or possibly covid? Only one other campervan which was a bit creepy. Lots of birdsong and ducks at night.
Toilets closed for winter, also very muddy
Stunning place...flush toilets there. Unfortunately cloudy so we couldn't see stars.
Our neighbors left their rubbish and I picked it up before the birds came ... please leave nothing but footprints!
Pretty lake, seems to be quite popular with local watersport enthusiasts! Flush toilets and sink available.
Cost (2p, non-powered): $0
Location: Next to lake (although not allowed to camp within 20m)
Facilities: Flush toilets and sink
Value: 10/10 (free!)
Sandflies: Not may for a lakeside camp
X-Factor: The view is good but not quite spectacular, so no
A perfect free campsite. The views over the lake were out of this world - the perfect introduction to the South island for us. Clean toilets too. Can imagine what it would be like at the height of summer (when it's a little warmer) - being able to swim in the lake would be the icing on top!
The only free campsite we managed during our journey. Was a beautiful place to wake up to with the view across the lake. Facilities basic, but fine. A few yahoo’s the night we were there, but wasn’t a real disturbance in our camper. The view and and price made it a good spot to stay.
Nice view. Quiet night. Toilets were closed.
Kidds on the move
Lots of space, right next to a lake and the most amazing view in the morning of the sunrise against the mountain!
Stunning spot! As the other reviewers say - nice enough flush loos and a fair bit of space. Pretty popular so worth arriving while light for a space and for sunset on the beautiful mountain views. If it’s clear, stay out for the stars - really bright and we saw shooting stars. Great alternative to busy/expensive Tekapo
Beautiful place with lovely mountain views. Flushing toilets and space for about 10 vans. Very quiet and peaceful. One of our favourite camping spots.
Fabulous free camp by a lovely lake with mountains in the background. Very decent toilets with even a sink and soap dispenser. Super quiet and calm despite about 15 vans here.
Loved this quiet place by the lake. Toilets clean. Beautiful sunrise over the mountains.
Excellent views and totally free. No one around so very quiet and peaceful.
Ideal free spot before visiting Tekapo, not too far from main road turn off. Clean toilets, no water supply, grass a bit long in places. Nice lake and pretty views, bit too cold for a swim in October!
Panoramic view of a mountains. Yes please. There isn’t a reason not to stay here. We were in love. Oh and a beautiful lake too and SO SO QUIET.
Great spot, not a huge amount of space so be prepared to share, views to die for, toliets good. Best cafe in the South island just down the road
Stunning camping spot! Beautiful view of the lake and snow capped mountains. Only 2 other motorhomes there but we had a spot slightly further down which made it feel like we were completely secluded.
Didn't notice any sandflies either. Highly recommend!
Went to the other 2 camping spots nearby, but didn't want to stay there as there were no other campers and it was a very isolated area. This site has one other camper, and was a bit more open, so felt safer here. Another camper pulled in late at night. Beautiful sunrise and sunset views, stunning spot to stay for free.
Beautiful quiet spot at night, although gets busy with kayakers and tourists early in the morning. Some stunning photo opportunities on the lake.

A fine nice place to stay close to the lake, quiet with public toilets.
Beautiful place! Lots of space!

Beautiful lake and views across to the snow covered mountains, clean flushing toilet, plenty of room for lots of campers although mostly on a slight slope.
Went last wek with our family who go there often het boating, water sking etc.WOW what a picture perfect spot on this earth. Toilets clean. Plenty of camping places and the night sky to die for.. we are so lucjy in NZ to have places like thus to camp ... free as well.
Such a wonderful place and free! Next to the lake, great atmosphere. No showers, only toilets. Must be self-contained.
Stunningly beautiful spot to camp near the lake, looking across the mountains. Only 3 other lots of campers there in October. Peaceful, and a good, clean flushing toilet.
Amazing view across the lake and mountains. We arrived in the dark so this was an extra special surprise when we woke up to an amazing sunny morning. Only one other camper was there so a very still and silent morning. Toilet closed for the winter but that didn't bother us as we are self contained.
Stunning, uninterrupted views of the lake and mountains. Simply beautiful. If wet, could be slippery on the gentle grass slope, but just park near the gravel road. A peaceful, tranquil spot shared with other campers and the ducks!
Amazing spot on a sunny day. We came here early October and it was a beautiful crisp day with a great view of the mountains and lake. Clean flushing toilets and SOAP.
We came here on our fifth day, only because we did the Hooker Valley Track and wanted to go to Lake Camp. This is a fantastic spot to camp because of the excellent views and also because the lake is very beautiful. The facilities were clean. Beware though, because there was enough wind to topple our chairs, and the cold combined with the wind made it freezing. Overall a fantastic camp to come to. We like stargazing, but due to the weather, it wasn't possible.
Camped one night here in early Sept 2016 - beautiful lakeside location with only one other camper van, however toilets were actually locked with signage 'closed for winter' ..... which was unfortunate as we had chosen this from the app having found the camper toilet cassette was almost full :0) . That aside, it was a lovely spot indeed for self contained vehicles. Camp site is free also.
Lovely spot, good flushing toilets plenty of space. Nice views. Directions are a little confusing. Turn right at the war memorial and then left onto Bennetts Road / picnic area.
Lake level was low in late April but it is still gorgeous. Bathrooms are simple but clean and the stars at night are vibrant.
Lake without water, not so lovely, but now used for motocross, nice.
No camping allowed between 23rd of Dec till second Monday of Jan.
Max. 7 nights. Water level was a few meters below normal when we got here, so no easy entering for swimming. Flush toilets, clean and tidy.
Beautiful spot by the lake, large space, free, basic and clean facilities. No complaints.
Nice place great swimming, good facilities.
+Fantastic location, peaceful and scenic
+Flush toilets open all night
+Worth the drive to get to
-Some areas slope so get there early to choose your spot
-Choose route back to main road carefully as one is a double ford and wasn't passable in Oct
:) would stay again
We were at this place in October, completely on our own, facing a wonderful landscape. Great sense of freedom. We knew there wouldn't be any facilities, so we gladly welcomed the toilets, which were good and clean. No need for more when you're trying to avoid the rows of caravans in a more formal camping site.
Many places beside the lake, with privacy. Great for fishers in the season.
