Nice spot by a the beautiful Takaka River and not too far from Takaka township. There is lots of space but it gets crowded anyway. This is because there is no other camping sites nearby (other than holiday parks - which are not everyone’s idea of “camping”).
If you like meeting a bunch of other “travellers” then you’ll love it 😎

Just off the highway, drive down to a bit of rough land next to the bridge. Patchy grass and deep ruts, so it’s tough to find a level spot. Lots of room though, and a drop toilet, and at the moment Portaloos in better condition than the long drop, but all were clean. Right on the river, so was pretty chilled, other than the roadworks in the morning. Was a bit of a downer.
you can have a Bath in the river. nice place for one night but a little bit noisy. mostly uneven surface.
Campsite was fine, but at some point in the night the river flooded and completely drenched our van parked a good 15-20ft from the bank. We were parked in the recommended area and in line with a number of other cars. Completely ruined our trip.
Great for a free site. Busy though! We ended up under the highway bridge. Portable toilets were fine. Careful where you drive as some vehicles can get stuck in the uneven ground
One of the best places we stayed at during our month around the south island!! Awesome spot by the river and you can literally drive up and park right next to it. A bit scruffy however spoke to some locals and they told us there are plans to tidy it up with allocated funding

Great spot, nice nature, beautiful by the river and barely any noise from traffic on the bridge.
Also, please learn some camping etiquette people, dont park right next to other cars when there is plenty of space elsewhere.
Very large place, which gets very muddy after rain. It was very crowded and felt like a festival with many young people and also some rubbish. The one toilet is not enough and it should be for "emergency" use only (very smelly)
Not bad for a free site. The road was quite muddy and rutted when we camped. Bit hard on the van.
View of the river is lovely.
Lots of people showed up by mid evening.
Popular spot on the main road by the river, fine for 1 night. Ground quite muddy and uneven so only suitable for self contained vehicles (not grassy like the photos). There's a long drop toilet and a bin :)

View and atmosphere by river was awesome, be careful do not park right by the bank, the river comes up at night. Free and very quiet! Good place to stay for one night.
Great fish and chips and beer in Takaka :)
Be really careful. This place floods! We foolishly stayed here when rain was forecast. The river burst its banks and when the kind farmer woke us at 4am the van was up to the doors in water! We had no damage but we were lucky!
I reckon starting at Pupu springs would be a better option!

View and atmosphere by river was awesome, make sure you park right by the bank though as tide comes up at night. Toilet was standard longdrop.
It's free, there's a clean toilet, it's ok. Nothing special. I think they were working on improvement, there were stacks of fresh gravel on the campground.
Stayed here for a night. Don't drive down to the river. If it rains you'll get stuck. Long drop - toilet is okay.
We straight up got stuck here in the gravel and had to dig our way out and we were right in the middle of the site. Site nothing too special but amazing view down by the river in the morning at sunrise which made up from our terrible arrival.
Free, next to the river and very quiet! Good place to stay for one night.
It is a free campsite for all self-contained campers. There was a lot of traffic during the night, on the road and at the camping place. The toilet could be much better.
Great spot with plenty of space. Park under the bridge or in the car park, but do not park near the river! It's tidal and the water rises quickly when it rains, and there have been a few people rescued from floating campervans.
A lovely river setting with lots of room for campers. Some traffic noise but this did not disturb us. We did not try the toilets as we were self-contained. Surprised to see non self-contained campers at this site.
Free. A pretty disgusting toilet but still awesome.
Great freedom camp with some space to park along clear tidal river otherwise open parking area for 20+ campers. One clean pit toilet. Please take your rubbish plus others with you!
Good place to stay for free with a long drop and a river.
Really nice freedom camping spot, toilet, river nearby, lots of space.
It is next to the river, that's great. But there is not water to wash your hands and no rubbish bins. That is bad.
Right at the foot of the bridge. Ample gravel area for multiple motorhomes. You do hear some traffic even during the night.
Perfect for free activity. Really refreshing mudpool!
Sitting in the hot river is amazing, take some candles and enjoy the heat.
Free camp. There are toilets, a river close to the camping. But there is the road near the camp (a little noise).
Nice, quiet, good people.

Mostly gravel, but there are some grassy spots. A good base to go explore Farewell Spit and Pupu Springs. Right under a busy bridge and near the river. One toilet but well-maintained. Just a short drive from Takaka. Decent spot. Great that it's free.
It would be ok if there were not heaps of gravel and sand occupying half par of this place.
No paper in the toilet who are almost hidden beside the gravel.
It was busy because there is not a lot of free CG in the area.
Noise from the bridge. It possible to park on the bank of the river (see picture) but take care of the tide.
