This was our favourite campsite we stayed out of our three week tour of New Zealand. It was so quiet and peaceful and the facilities were really good. No showers, but we weren’t looking for a campsite with them that night. There are loads of goods walks that you can do from the campsite itself and if you have a clear night, it’s amazing for stargazing as there’s no light pollution!
Lovely open spaces, lots of different spots to pick. Tyre swings, picnic tables around the place so lots of choice spots. Had a wonderful dip in the river, deep enough for a adult to paddle, but shallow enough for my 5yr old to stand. Amenities are great and clean, bbq work well. Will definitely come again and bring my dog.
Really nice campsite! We arrived so late and we could find several free sites. Also facilities were clean and accessible. If you like Lord of the rings, you could enjoy Rivendell :)

There were lots of areas to camp, but the area was fairly boggy in many sections due to recent rains. So we ended up choosing to park our largish motorhome on one of the gravel powered sites, without knowing what the fees would be for power, which we didn't really need. (The information display showed that it was $8 per person without power, which we thought was quite reasonable.) To our great surprise when the friendly ranger arrived in the early evening (as expected) he told us the fee had recently been increased for power, another $8 per person per night -- so the choice was to pay this excessive fee, or move off to a possibly boggy site. We were not excited! (But we chose to pay up rather than move camp after having had dinner and some nice wine.)
The upside of this camp was the enjoyable and picturesque walk down to and along the river to the Hobbit(?) film location, I understand there are several other nice walks as well.
Beautiful campsite, lovely walking tracks.
Ranger very friendly and helpful
Can imagine it would be even better in the summer with communal BBQ available.
Only one toilet but was clean and had warm water.
Huge site split into many areas. Great toilet and bbq facilities throughout the park ..nice river walk
Beautiful park with plenty of choice as to where to camp. The ranger comes around each evening to collect camping fees. At $8 per adults it’s great value. Toilets and cooking areas are adequate. There are no showers. Good swimming holes nearby. Very happy to stay again.
A clean and well looked after place. It’s huge and has several cooking shelters. Good value for $8 p.p.
The ranger was really friendly !
Save up to 70% on campsite fees! Support conservation and experience the natural beauty of NZ. 78 Department of Conservation campsites, one convenient pass.
Great location with lots of good walks to do too. Facilities are excellent and ranger did great job of keeping up with the large number of people staying over Christmas. Pleased to see recycling facilities too. Very picturesque spot and so well laid out, you could all feel like you had your own space. Highly recommended.
Toilets are flush but not the cleanest, massive place, good for privacy, however very open so not much shelter when it’s windy & it gets VERY windy. good walks near by, ranger is very friendly, overall good place
Nice place, close to Wellington, close to short walks, the best ranger.
Beautiful location and a spacious camping area. There are now 4 powered sites, at $12/person.
Excellent location on the river! We had a bonfire at night and enjoyed swimming in the river during the day. Clean toilets, kitchen, BBQ grills and drinking water station. No showers.
We were here just after Christmas and the place had a great vibe. The lower site is definitely preferred although it has no power sites and not very level, but it’s great fun finding your own special spot. It’s great to have a campsite like this where you can’t book and it’s so big that you can just show up when the weather looks good.
No soul, it's just big. Nothing else, nothing more. Many locals I guess and much music playing. Not what we expected from a national park.
Great campsite for only $6 per person, per night. Place for hundreds or maybe thousand campers..so huge and super well maintained. Windy as everywhere. You will find here everything you need.
Access savings worth hundreds of $$ on Top Ranked NZ Accommodation and Activities for just $1 per day.
Awesome place. Clean, lots of places to camp, lots of walks and places to bike, great BBQ areas, and the ranger is helpful. Easy to find and cheap. Can have fires on riverbed and awesome areas to swim and rocks to jump off.
WARNING: If you are approaching this site from the North and are not comfortable with your car or the roads, avoid Akatarawa Rd at all costs! It is 25km of one lane, two way traffic weaving through the mountain side on a cliff edge.
Beautiful campsite, with great hike options and cooking/cleaning areas. The washrooms are in good condition too.
Gates close around dusk so make sure you check the time before arriving! Nice spot with handy outdoor kitchen area.
I am going there very soon. It looks pretty cool... Also when was it first built :D
Beautiful campground with lots of different areas to camp. Clean toilets, covered cooking area and picnic tables. Gate closes at 6, but if you contact the ranger beforehand he will open the gate if you arrive later. Convenient location from Wellington (and the ferry to Picton).
A beautiful spacious campsite, with clean toilet facilities and open kitchen with kettle as well as park benches to eat, our time here was a delight. Would highly highly recommend and come back again.
This camping place is great. Only $6 per person for a lot of space, flush toilets, tapwater and an electric BBQ kitchen with sheltered cooking and eating area. There are plenty walks around and it's only 45min from Wellington. There are no showers, but 10min away in Upper Hutt, the H20 Xtream swimming pool offers the use of their showers for $2 per person.
Beautiful location, and great facilities. Very quiet in October. Gate closes at dusk. Not a second later - as we've discovered! Rivendell from Lord of the Rings is within walkable distance. Lots of geocaches around here, must come back again for a longer stay. A++++

Fantastic walk in the rainforest full of green, amazing Rimu, Rata and White Pine trees and the amazing rivers.
Philippa and Adam
Brilliant campsite that's kind of like a DoC site. It's $6 per person per night, with clean flush toilets, sinks for washing up (but no hot water) & electric BBQs (which we didn't use so no idea how good they were). There is a river for bathing. Massive camping site and very quiet.
$6 a night per adult, bring your own self-contained motorhome. Great place for everyone, including dog owners. Park is really big, easy to get lost in when there are soooo many tents there, awesome place to go to, loads of tracks to walk, fishing, a lot of families bring their kids' bikes, gets very cold there so bring warm clothes as once the sun goes down the temperatures drop.
Very beautiful and spacious campsite surrounded by mountains. Clean toilet (only 1) with enough toilet paper and an outdoor water tap. Highly recommend this place!
This camp should be rated 15/10!! One of the best quality campsite I've seen so far, and for only $6 per person... amazing! Huge, with many different areas, so you won't have trouble finding your perfect spot. A lot of locals come here just for the day, so it seems busy but quiets down at nightfall. Fires allowed if agreed with the wonderfully nice rangers. Really clean facilities (toilets, sinks, BBQ cleaned at least twice a day). Lovely walks all around, river swims... Thank you, DOC !!!
Phenomenal facilities for cars and campervans alike. Gates to the park closed at 5 PM and reopened at 8 AM, which led to peace and isolation for the campgrounds. Honesty box of $6 per person per night, but signs posted at the information kiosk said that the ranger comes around with an EFTPOS machine in the evening. We saw no one the first night, and no rangers the second night. There are two large roofed picnic areas with free electric BBQs and treated, drinkable water from sinks. All facilities and toilets were clean and well lit all night by a sensor light. The beautiful scenery in the mountain and by the riverfront are awesome to camp by, but it can get windy. There are lots of trails to hike, water to swim in and kayak, and with permission from the ranger, you can light a fire by the river. For the Lord of the Rings and disc golf enthusiasts, you can find Rivendell here on a short track. Harcourt Park, just 12 minutes away by car, is home to an 18 disc golf course and Isengard (Orthanc), which are all free destinations. Although we camped in a tent in winter, we could tell it's the ultimate place to enjoy in summer. The only thing that's missing is showers, but you can wash up in the sinks or the river if you need. Stayed June 2015.
Excellent camp site which makes you feel you are well away from civilization. Site is large and has many trees around so plenty of shade on a hot day. Many tables scattered around where you can have your meals. Toilets are basic but all clean. There is a nice roofed outdoor kitchen area with sinks and BBQ to use. Loved to have a river right next to the site where my 7 year old boy had plenty of fun to play in. For Lord of the Rings Fans there is a 20 minute walk through the bush to visit the film set of Rivendell and that is all free of charge for a change! Unfortunately we run out of time and only stayed for a day. Wish I could have spend another couple of days to soak up nature.
A great spot, easily accessible and good explanations everywhere.
Very nice camping ground where you can park anywhere. Clean flushing toilets. Possibilities for walks directly from the camping ground.
Huge camping area, but very good facilities and nice scenery nearby. Close to Wellington. Ranger picks up the cash and your rubbish!
Awesome camping ground. Large grassy areas, next to a river, lots of barbecues and facilities and awesome walks nearby. It was chosen as 2014's best National Park!
Big open space near the river. Trees and nice nooks for vans and tents. Facilities. Great walks are nearby, (Lord of the Rings venue), great family spot.
Perfect location if you plan to catch the ferry the next morning. Nice easy walks to filming location for Rivendell from lord of the rings.
Facilities were nice and clean.
We were concerned about gates being locked until 8 am because we needed to be checked in at the ferry at 8 am. We called Ranger Steve early on the day of our arrival and he said "no worries". We could just have a "yarn" when we arrived and work something out.
We "yarned" with Ranger Steve and he arranged for us to leave at 6:30 am and we made the ferry with plenty of time to spare.
Great location, great atmosphere, great price, great service.
Great place, close to town but you don't feel that way, and well priced. Also one of the few places in NZ you can often have a campfire - right in the river bed. Super nice!
6$ each but hypse of space, trees (for shade), next to the river, with good toilets, no showers but huge picnic shelter with sinks, tables and free barbecues! The place to go if you want to explore Rivendell ;)

Incredibly beautiful camping ground!
Normal DOC tariff but you get much more than a basic campsite. Equipped with outdoor kitchen, no hot water but everything else you might hope for, i.e. free electrical bbq's.
It did not stop raining when we were there, but that didn't stop us from hiking in the forest and visiting the nearby Rivendell set.
Best of it was that we had the place to ourselves when we were there.
Very good, very large campsite close to a river. $6 adults, $3 kids. This is run by the Regional Council, but similar to DOC campsites.
Excellent walking tracks nearby, suitable for all ages, through pristine native bush.
We stayed here for 4 nights.
+ $5pp so nice and cheap,
+ Clean toilets with nice proper squirty soap,
+ Security gates locked over night so you feel nice and safe,
+ Power socket in kitchen area,
+ 6 FREE BBQs in the 2 big covered kitchen areas as well as sinks,
+ Lovely surrounding grass areas.
Really nice place to stay, really quiet and some friendly ducks which had no qualms about being fed bread and crisps by hand :)
Very nice campground with lots of space. We parked by the river and stayed for 2 nigths. We felt, we had the hole campground to ourself. Toilets fine. No shower. We only missed the hot water in the kitchen area to do the dishes. Walking distance to 'Rivendell'. Price: 5$ pr. adult over 16 years old and 2$ pr. child.
Good place, far from the noise.
Like all DOC campsites, clean, drinking water and tracks around.
We just loved this place. Very pretty park with a lot of options for camping spots. For $5 per person per night thought it was good value. There are toilets and BBQs. In the evening the rangers come around and collect rubbish and recycling. The gates are locked at night, which feels safe. The river is clean and we found a great swimming hole. Definitely want to return.

Vast site with basic facilities. Lots of people there, including two guide troops, but with so much space it was easy to find a spot away from the madding crowds. Very peaceful at night
Huge, well kept park with free BBQ stations near the river.
Quiet, very clean, very helpful ranger.
The park near Wellington is very beautiful and you can do a lot of nice longer or shorter walks there. The campground had everything we needed and was clean. Only $5.
Very nice campground and was only $6. Very nice river to swim in.
