Beautiful spot by the water! Came in super late (12.30am) and able to find a spot no problem. Quick rest before heading off on our journey. Enjoyed the animals around also!

This is a beautiful spot and we would highly recommend staying here. Toilets are basic but clean.
There is a map as you enter the park, double check this as it shows you the areas you are allowed to camp. Do not park right by the lake, this is restricted.

Great place to stay for a night. It was very busy though, as a lot of people stay longer. Can't blame them, beautiful spot. We stayed out of the designated zone because we read the sign wrong but no one accosted us. Has a toilet, no shower or drinking water. Noise was to a minimum, but boats do start up early. Water skiers. Will go back.

In november 2020..nice place to stop. Recently council has removed large trees and defined overbite parking space away from lake edge. Sign is very confusing and often not followed because of this. pitty council didnt spray grasses area for onehunga weed...prickles EVERYWHERE....poor people enjoying lake.

A place with lots of space. The toilets are very basic and few and have no lighting.
Because it is right next to water there are lots of small flies which can be a bit annoying. Make sure to keep your door and windows shut when lights are on when it is dark outside.

Stopped here for the first night in our campervan. Great site by lake with lots of space. Relatively busy but not totally full. Toilets perfectly fine. Helpful regular campers who helped us figure out some teething problems with our van and super close to Hobbiton!

28/11/18 Great stop over location, plenty of room.
Waterskiing location, also good launching place for kayaking down to the glowworm stream, and for Hobbit fans Hobbiton is close by.
Toilets, we did not find drinking water or toilet emptying but thats ok. Also take your litter home.

06/12/18 We just had to come back to this location after been told about a great kayak paddle at night. From the site turn right and paddle down the lake for about 30 mins and on the other side of the lake marked by a buoy is a stream, paddle up the stream and when dark marvel at the glow worms all along the riverbank. For those without kayaks there is a local company offering tours.

Again a quiet evening on the site, couple of locals entertaining us water skiing

Toilets on site but no fresh water or waste collection

A lovely area with plenty of space and views of the lake. Good spot if you're visiting Hobbiton, allow yourself about 30 mins drive.

On the water so great view of lake with easy access to swim. Lots of space. Felt safe as there were other people around - at least 10 other campers and an active water ski club next door. I enjoyed watching the water skiers. I recommend this place to freedom camp.

Nice green spot by the river! Stayed here a night after visiting the Hobbiton Movie Set in April. There were a few other campervans but there was still plenty of space! Toilets were clean but were only lit by sunlight. Motorboats made some noise in the evening, but the place was quiet at night.

We enjoyed our freedom camping experience here, staying for one night after visiting Hobbiton. The bathrooms are clean and have flushing toilets, though no lighting at night. There were probably about 10 other camper vans here when we stayed, but there was still plenty of room and plenty of water views. The lake is very pretty but does attract some biting insects (maybe mosquitos? They didn't seem to be sandflies...). I definitely reccomend this spot if you're in Matamata and looking for a relaxing water view.

We stayed here for one night before visiting Hobbiton the next morning. After the day visitors had gone it was fairly quiet and there is loads of space so it was certainly not crowded, There were a few motor boats around until dusk and also in the morning but they were not intrusive as we were not parked near to the boat launching ramp. Also some traffic going to and from the water ski club but again nothing to cause any annoyance, Toilets basic and clean. Overall a nice spot to stop for the night.

Fantastic stop over. We went out of our way to find this and not at all disappointed. Only about 6 other campervans and motorhomes. Huge grassy area by the river. Next to NZ Bare Foot Skiers Club. Stayed on a Thursday night so very quiet. Enjoyed watching a few boats on the water but they had left by 8pm so no noise. Strictly self contained only. Please respect that.

Beautiful spot. You can park literally right up to the lake, nice shady trees and far enough away from the road you can't hear it. Simple toilets, no water that we saw (other than in the lake!). Plenty of space for big and small busses. Loses a few points because of the 7am wake up to powerboats water skiing on the lake, they didn't finish until after dark 9.30pm the previous night.

Free. Basic flushable toilets. Open area lakeside where you can watch water-skiers. Don't park too close to fence opposite water unless you really like the smell of cow poo. We found that out a bit too late. Easy to find off of the highway. Just over bridge from SH1. Further from highway than 2 other nearby freebies so much quieter at night.
