Lots of space.

Freedom camping at Weirs Beach in the Catlins, Southland

Freedom camping is allowed for up to 28 days at Weirs Beach Recreation Reserve in Haldane, Southland.
The Southland District Council ask that campers please use the toilet facilities provided, restrict noise between 8am and 8pm, dispose of rubbish in an appropriate manner and leave their campsite tidy.
Get amongst the remote southern reaches of NZ's Catlins coast. Good as gold!

This is a council designated campsite. Follow the signs to Slope Point (New Zealands most southern point), turn off onto Weir Road and drive to the estury. A great view.

Quite possibly the most beautiful freedom camping spot in New Zealand.

Drove there through a dirt road at night under the impression that there was a water supply. There was a large water tank however it was in a terrible location, where we almost got stuck trying to get within range (the site was very muddy). The water from the tank does not work with a hose so we could only use it straight from the tap. The sink was non-functioning. We left the campsite an hour after arrival.

Large flat ground. Perfect for a tent. Plenty of space where we were there. No sandflies and does have mobile phone reception. Win win.

Awesome spot away from the crowds with an estuary just a few steps away from the camp site. We had a special treat with a sea lion and her young pup staying close by. This camp is basic but well maintained by a lovely lady employed by Fulton & Hogan. She takes great pride in keeping everything tidy and the cleanliness of the toilet is a credit to her. Recommended.

Nice location, right next to beach estuary with lots of wader birds to spot. Lots of surf boards in the camp so assuming nearby is good surfing. Big field, but did fill up. We were there at the start of the holiday season so almost one side was filled with families set up with campers/gazebos/tents for and extended holiday stay. One basic toilet, and a wash basin - potential for queues to build if the site is busy.

High score is for location then site itself, as its just a busy field.

Nice spot close to water, it’s large enough for a lot of campers, tents, caravans and Larger motor homes- it does fill up though. There is a long drop style toilet and a outdoor tap and bench, very wet and muddy around it. Watch out for sand flies in the evenings. The wee beach behind the site it calm and you can sit under the tree and watch the tide go right out. It would be a good swimming spot in the heat of summer!

Large grassed area which everyone parked around the perimeter. If there were more people they would have had to park in the middle but lots of room. Self contained so didn’t use the toilet nor the sink. Nice and quiet. The tide went out and lots of beach to stroll around: even if the tide came in it didn’t look like it would get very deep.

Standard free campsite -- Long drop toilet, (non-drinkable) tap and sink. The night we stayed was pretty windy but the camp site is a bit sheltered. The area was fairly full by night time, when we arrived lat afternoon it was maybe three quarters full. It's 2km up a dirt road but the rest is sealed (think the road is newly surfaced as most of our maps had it marked as dirt).

Super cool spot! Lots of people, but a sink to do dishes (I probably wouldn’t drink the water), a toilet, beautiful sunset, and the ocean is very near the campsite and there are tons of cute little crabs to watch run around!

Quite small campsite, it got crowded but everyone still found a spot. Clean long drop toilet and a sink for the dishes.
