Great place to stay. Was fairly busy though on Labour Weekend. Apparently it's meant to be quiet normally! Definately some better spots in there too so get in early!

All the locals were very friendly and happy to provide advice on surf casting and possible swim spots.

Toilets clean and well serviced.

Lovely spot, good cell phone coverage and immaculately clean flushing toilets, plus drinking water. 2 minutes walk to a beautiful, quiet beach with rich wildlife. Good shelter, hardly anyone around - we visited in May and didn’t speak to a soul for 2 days! Worth bringing stuff to eat as the shop isn’t walking distance.

We had 2 nights here and found the camp clean & tidy, the new toilet block is excellent. An outside tap is available, and a short stroll through beach grasses to the beautiful big beach.
The grass park is a little undulating in places and room for larger vehicles. Well done Porangahau.
Golf club here at the beach also.

Awesome spot and we caught it on a perfect bluebird day with no wind! We had a chat with a local who told us Porangahau is Maori for Mad Winds! There are toilets and a water fountain available. No other facilities. There was a bit of rubbish around the campsite so we spent 10mins do a quick pick up, please respect the freedom camping areas in NZ and take out what you take in so we can continue to enjoy these places. There is a great coffee spot in Porangahau township called Flotsam and Jestsam Coffee next to the dairy. He also makes pizzas which we didnt get to try on this trip but they look legit! Cant wait to go back.

Lots of space, super sunny spot. The beach is just a short walk away, there is a dairy in Porongahau (too long to walk to) with the basic essentials. Separate male/female toilets (which are going to be rebuilt this year) there is a drinking water tap. We enjoyed staying here. Cheers

Lots of camping space, for tents and motor homes. We got a beautiful spot under huge trees, with a view to the beach. Been here 2 nights... staying again tonight. Drinking water tap available!!! Clean toilets. Shop is a 10 minute drive to the village, but if you drive around to the other side (heading in the directing which you entered) there a food van.
Loved freedom camping here. Peaceful, amazing ocean and friendly people.

I’d give this an 11/10 if I could. Wonderful spot. And a bonus to have two flushing toilets with toilet paper and running water as well as drinking water on tap. We are very fortunate to have places like this to stay in NZ.

Such a beautiful spot we went our on new year's day with the family and pitched our tent and gazebo, we loved the beach and the company of the other campers. We stayed 3 days but decided to pack up as the winds became so strong it demolished tents and gazebos, other than that such an awesome spot and beautiful beach.

A wonderful wee sun trap, tucked behind the dunes. I was there on an August weekend and shared the place with only one caravan. The beach and dunes are endless, and, when I was there, at least, were entirely empty. What a delight. Make sure you contact the Central Hawke’s Bay council to tell them that you enjoyed it. Their Facebook page is very responsive.

wouldn’t stay here again, toilets are very cramped, dark and have holes in the building, scared a mouse or rat was going to get in but they do flush and are well stocked. Tons of sandflies and not much shelter when it got windy, only plus is the lovely beach.

Excellent free camping behind the dunes on a 3 mile beach with a sand spit. Very beautiful. Clean fluch toilets and drinking water. a small grassy area (maybe 10 vans) and a few spots under the trees. In late October had the beach pretty much to ourselves early Saturday morning but by 11 it was a motorcycle race track. Fun for them, miserable for the rest of the world. 10/10 for the site, 0/10 for the bikers. Don't forget to let the council know you're there and encourage them to keep the site for others - just phone to say thanks, the least we can all do after paying nothing.

Lovely spot with clean toilets and drinking water. Quiet beach and lovely to see hardly any junk on the beach. There is a lovely converted horse float next to the dairy in Porangahau that sells great coffee. Say hi to Orlando and help support the local community. We also had lovely fish & chip meal at the pub.

We stayed for a night in mid February and it was really quiet. There's drinking water & two clean flush toilets. The views from the tops of the dunes of the waves crashing onto the beach were good. However we struggled to pitch our tent because it was really windy the night we stayed & there's very little shelter. And the fact the ground is sandy didn't help with making the tent secure in the face of the NZ wind.

One of the most beautiful campsites in New Zealand! The site is directly behind the dunes of a great beach where the swimming is really fun. Toilets were nice, but a bit dark and drinking water was also available.

Wonderful place to camp for a few days. Basic flushing toilets but kept clean and stocked. Being right on the beach an added bonus. Definitely worth a trip. Arrived in peak season and still managed to get a spot under the trees.

Lovely campsite with access to a beautiful long beach with soft golden sand. Drinking water, toilet. But remember to bring food as we didn't find any grocery in the village. And the old hill road is with spectacular view but a is a steep gravel road.
