I’d give this an 11/10 if I could. Wonderful spot. And a bonus to have two flushing toilets with toilet paper and running water as well as drinking water on tap. We are very fortunate to have places like this to stay in NZ.
A lovely little freedom camp, two clean flush toilets and easy access to a lovely white sand beach.
We are so luck to have these places in NZ.
Great freedom camping site. Information to the Council is not necessary anymore.
Long sandy beach, relaxed atmosphere.
No fires please!!
Thank you for this great site!

Such a beautiful spot we went our on new year's day with the family and pitched our tent and gazebo, we loved the beach and the company of the other campers. We stayed 3 days but decided to pack up as the winds became so strong it demolished tents and gazebos, other than that such an awesome spot and beautiful beach.

A wonderful wee sun trap, tucked behind the dunes. I was there on an August weekend and shared the place with only one caravan. The beach and dunes are endless, and, when I was there, at least, were entirely empty. What a delight. Make sure you contact the Central Hawke’s Bay council to tell them that you enjoyed it. Their Facebook page is very responsive.
Awesomeness all round. Defs be back. Rad beach. Good vibes 🌼
wouldn’t stay here again, toilets are very cramped, dark and have holes in the building, scared a mouse or rat was going to get in but they do flush and are well stocked. Tons of sandflies and not much shelter when it got windy, only plus is the lovely beach.

Excellent free camping behind the dunes on a 3 mile beach with a sand spit. Very beautiful. Clean fluch toilets and drinking water. a small grassy area (maybe 10 vans) and a few spots under the trees. In late October had the beach pretty much to ourselves early Saturday morning but by 11 it was a motorcycle race track. Fun for them, miserable for the rest of the world. 10/10 for the site, 0/10 for the bikers. Don't forget to let the council know you're there and encourage them to keep the site for others - just phone to say thanks, the least we can all do after paying nothing.
Lovely spot with clean toilets and drinking water. Quiet beach and lovely to see hardly any junk on the beach. There is a lovely converted horse float next to the dairy in Porangahau that sells great coffee. Say hi to Orlando and help support the local community. We also had lovely fish & chip meal at the pub.
Beautiful site, weather wasn't great but still had a fantastic 1 night stay. Wonderful beach.

We stayed for a night in mid February and it was really quiet. There's drinking water & two clean flush toilets. The views from the tops of the dunes of the waves crashing onto the beach were good. However we struggled to pitch our tent because it was really windy the night we stayed & there's very little shelter. And the fact the ground is sandy didn't help with making the tent secure in the face of the NZ wind.
One of the most beautiful campsites in New Zealand! The site is directly behind the dunes of a great beach where the swimming is really fun. Toilets were nice, but a bit dark and drinking water was also available.
Wonderful place to camp for a few days. Basic flushing toilets but kept clean and stocked. Being right on the beach an added bonus. Definitely worth a trip. Arrived in peak season and still managed to get a spot under the trees.
Lovely campsite. Felt safe. Definitely recommend!
Lovely campsite with access to a beautiful long beach with soft golden sand. Drinking water, toilet. But remember to bring food as we didn't find any grocery in the village. And the old hill road is with spectacular view but a is a steep gravel road.
It is a very good campground and free.
Nice flash toilets and drinking water but that is it. Again a nice spot on the sea front - very picturesque.
The beach is stunning.
I had it all to my self. Beautiful drive if you take Old Hill Road to get to Te Paerahi.
Would absolutely return!
This is a beautiful spot just off the beaten path. Free camping next to the beach, flush toilets and running water... it's in our top-5 list of places we camped at.
