OK, so the weather early this month was indifferent. Yet that doesn't stop Dive North showing you a great time. Owner, instructors, guides and even Mr Mutley (the dog) are incredibly friendly, loyal and helpful. They have an excellent product, the wonderful waters of the Bay of Islands area and two great wrecks, Rainbow Warrior and HMNZS Canterbury. They make these and their surrounding reefs, caves and tunnels into an awesome combination then add superb lunches and freshly cooked pancakes.

Inn Keeper is a first rate boat, perfectly suited to her task, fully equipped with every facility, fast, sturdy and safe. Sites are carefully selected with due deference to weather conditions on-site and for transits. A thoroughly professional organisation to which we returned from the UK four years after our last experience. Confirmed cold-water divers (200 and 1,000 dives), well used to wreck penetration, large tides and the rugged landscapes of Scotland, the Bay of Islands kept us more than satisfied for three days of excellent diving.

Grateful thanks to Dave, Dan, Katie and Billie,
Mike & Mark

My partner and I went diving with Dive North beginning of Nov 2015. We are a couple with qualification level Advanced and Instructor. Our different experience level was no problem at all. We did 3 wreck dives and discovered 3 reef dive sites. Every site had its own unique character and was well chosen for the conditions. We were neither bored or too challenged with a site. Katie is an experienced guide and looked after us well under water as well as on the boat. She spoilt us with yummy pancakes and made sure every need was fulfilled. As we booked for 3 days, Dave, the owner, gave us a great deal including free pictures and lunch. He's the skipper too and prepared our lunches himself. On our way to the dive sites we got some history lessons about the area too which were very interesting. We highly recommend Dive North as the family owned business is looking after each customer as an individual and has years of experience in the area with even their own discovered dive sites. All the dive gear is in very good condition and serviced regularly by Dave. Thanks so much for the unforgettable time, guys!

Had 2 great days doing my Advanced Open Water with Dan, Katie and Dave. Dan is a knowledgeable instructor who pointed out the right points for me to pay attention to. I always felt safe and relaxed in the water with him by my side. Skipper Dave led us to the nicest diving spots in the area and brought us safely back to shore through the windy conditions.

We did two dives with Dan (Dive master) and Dave (captain). We had a bit of a snafu the morning of the dives and they were both SO accommodating! Our first dive was around a small island and into a cave. Neither of us are 100% used to water this cold (15 degrees this day) so this first, shorter, shallower dive was a great starting point. Our second dive was to an awesome wreck dive called the Canterbury. Dan was awesome to dive with! Showed us all around the wreck and took us through some amazing parts of the ship. We loved it! The ride back was great and they gave us some fun suggestions of things to do in Kerikeri. Overall, it was fantastic!

2 great days with Dan and Dave! They are patient and you can learn a lot from them, they make you very comfortable, like a small family!
If you want to hear nice and funny stories or eat delicious pancakes, you are in the right place too!
We dived in two amazing wrecks, the Rainbow Warrior and the Canterbury, it was absolutely fabulous, the fish are not shy at all and you forget very easily how cold the water is in winter time at 30 meter depth!
Thanks a lot Dan and Dave, it was very nice meeting you!

So I had my very first Dive with Dan and Dave. I didn't know what to expect and was therefore a bit nervous. Despite that I never felt unsafe because Dan always told us what to do next. I especially appreciated his patience in and under the water since it took me some time to get used to the diving. Because of that the first dive was to be honest not that enjoyable as I was focused on the breathing and all the things you have to pay attention to.
That is why I was really surprised how much fun the second dive was. The techniques of the diving were far easier to perform and so I could enjoy the feeling of beeing 10m deep in the water. It was a special experince to feel like beeing weightless and to swim with some fish.
Thanks again to Dan and Dave for all the patience, the photos and not to forget the pancakes (which I ate for the first time the english way)!

I recently had the pleasure of diving with Dive North out of Kerikeri, New Zealand. I also stayed at the owner's, Dave and Sue, home stay for 2 nights.

We did two dives on the day, and we had excellent conditions for both. First, we dove the HMNZS Canterbury which is a New Zealand Navy Frigate that was sunk for the purpose of creating a dive site at the end of its career. Katie gave an excellent dive briefing on the wreck's history, and what to expect during the dive. We had a small group of divers (6 plus Katie, one of the the Dive North Instructors), The wreck was in good shape, with lots of fish swimmin around. We even penetrated a few of the larger compartments of the ship (helicopter hangar, and middle control room). Visibility was great (about 15-20 m) for temperate diving and the water was comfortable with the 7mm wetsuit that they provided.

The second dive was a bit shallower, with no wreck, but lots of fish. The dive site was called Putahataha, and was close by the Canterbury in Deep Water cove. There were lots of schooling fish, a few moray eels, and some really inquisitive kelp fish that posed for a few great photographs.

From the beginning, Dive North stood out as a top notch operation and I would recommend them to anyone who will be diving in the area. Dave and Sue's home stay is also an excellent accommodation and you will not be disappointed. I showed up looking to sneak in a dive at the end of a business trip, and I left with an excellent experience, a few new friends, and some cool photos. Then only thing that I wish I did different is to have planned for more days off so I could have dove another day or two!

Our time spent with Dave, Sue, Dan, and Katie was a blast.

We chose the homestay package that they offer, so all we had to do was drive up from Auckland after work on Friday and head to their shop in Kerikeri. They were super flexible with our arrival time and made us feel at home from the second we walked in the door and started playing tug-of-war with Mutley (their dog).

Each morning we woke up to a great breakfast and trekked to the dive shop (50 meters away) and hopped in the car with them down to the marina.
We enjoyed a great tour out to the dive sites with some local history of the islands, and then the real fun began. We experienced wall diving, wreck deep diving, and had flexibility in picking what we were most interested in. Got the opportunity to dive for scallops and also saw plenty of rays and kingies and eels.

The dive guides were very experienced and knowledgeable, catering the dives to match with our experience level and to maximize the amount of dive time. They served hot drinks after each dive and had hot water showers available on the boat for our use. If you are interested in having lunch supplied, for a small fee they will give you a sandwich with some chips and fruit, followed by some kind of dessert (like freshly made pancakes!)

They are open, trustworthy, and competitively priced with any other operators in the area, and we highly recommend Dive North to anyone who is interested in diving in the Bay of Islands.

Sincerely,

Jon & Brynnan

The service, instruction and overall experience with Dive North was outstanding in practically all facets, so rather than detail the two days we spent with them in detail I will cover off my highlights:

1. The calm, professional and courteous instruction we received. Our instructor Dan introduced himself to us immediately and from that point on ensured we knew exactly what was happening next and what would be expected from us - both on and off the water. His patience when individuals struggled with skills was commendable and he ensured we felt comfortable and safe throughout.

2. The friendly, open nature of the crew. Each member of crew introduced themselves to us and made us feel comfortable and welcomed. From the constant cups of coffee and the detail on a number of islands in the way out, they were what made the two days so much fun. The diving will take me back to the Bay of Islands, the crew will take me back to Dive North.

3. The professionalism and service of Dave and Sue, the owners. From the first email enquiries they were both informative and patient, and promptly answered questions and provided advice on future diving options.

We had a fantastic time, and look forward to visiting them again.

I had an amazing time learning to dive with Dive North. My instructors Sarah and Dan were both fun and entertaining as well as professional. Sarah had me laughing on top of the water as well as under the water, she is a real gem if you ever get the chance to meet her. Dave and Sue made me feel welcome and exceeded my expectations by far. Dave and Sarah really made my last day special and went above and beyond what was expected (thank you!). Sue is also one of the sweetest people you will ever meet! The staff were so helpful and friendly; they go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable on your dives (Katie, Eva, Ash, Sarah, Dan). I hope to go back someday not only to dive but to visit all the wonderful people we met. They also have one of the sweetest and most hilarious dogs I have ever met. His name is Muttley. Although he doesn't come out to dive, he is a treat at the dive shop. I would highly recommend choosing Dive North whether its for training or not as they are spectacular and you will not be disappointed. They make sure you feel safe and confident to dive and have your best interests at heart. Thanks again Dive North!

I started my Open Water course at Dive North with Sarah (my very best teacher EVER) as my instructor. Everyone in the team is so nice and from the first day on you feel like you are on a family trip rather than on a paid dive experience. And even if someone is not your instructor and has other things to do, they are all very happy to help you with any problem or question you might have.
Therefore, I decided to take the Advanced Open Water course straight away afterwards. Among others, the best experience was the HMNZ Canterbury wreck, which is an absolutely fantastic place to dive. Guided by Dave or other crew members, the dive is tailored to your level of experience and desire - you can stay outside and make a tour on the deck or penetrate far into the dark interior.
Excellent instructors and guides, brand-new equipment, flexibility in your dives, new friends, fresh self-made pancakes and lemon cake on the boat, hot drinks before and after every dive - those are just a few of the services you are offered at Dive North.

Within my two courses Dive North has given me a solid confidence and the feeling that I know what I am doing under water. They make sure that you have the skills necessary for being a very good diver, not just a certified one.

I first found Dive North over Christmas when I did my Advance Open Water course with them. I have since been back over the Easter break to complete a few more specialty certification. They are well suited to handle all levels of divers and have the right gear/equipment to make your diving experience amazing. They are keen to get you a warm drink as soon as you are out of the water and have plenty of room on the boat for you to move around. The highlight of my last trip was the pancakes they cooked up on the way out in the morning. Being Canadian, I was quite impressed they had real Canadian maple syrup.

I did my Open Water dive Course at Dive North on the Bay of Islands together with my boyfriend and we couldn’t have chosen a better place to learn scuba diving.
Dave gave us a very warm welcome in Kerikeri and I felt more like a friend than one of New Zealands thousands tourists. The crew was very professional and the gear pretty new and well maintained.
Finally under the water it didn’t take me long to learn all the skills and to feel comfortable and safe under Marc’s, our dive instructors, surveillance. I was amazed by diving and being under the water. Apparently we had so much fun that my boyfriend and I made the Advance Open Water Dive straight after the first course. We got to see so many of the great dive sites in the Bay of Islands. Especially there is to mention the MS Canterbury.
Dave and his crew put so much effort and passion in introducing us to the underwater world. They really care about you and your diving experience.

I spent two days diving with Dive North and they were simply outstanding.
As an instructor myself I have dived with several dive operations around the world and expect high standards, professionalism and fun. Dave and Mark not only managed to provide these key attributes of a dive operation but they did it with ease and offered so much more. Quite simply they are the best dive operation I have dived with and my two days there were an absolute pleasure. The two of them provide knowledge, fun, great dives and could not have done more to look after me.
Despite being the only diver booked in for diving (mid week in winter) Dave was quite happy to run the trip. Most dive operations require a minimum number of divers to take the boat out and to my mind this is one of the many reasons that Dive North stands out from the rest. They treat you as an individual and put you, the diver, at the center of the operation. Businesses all over the world (both within the dive industry and outside) could learn a thing or two about customer service from these guys! I dived both the Rainbow Warrior and the Canterbury (personally I preferred the Canterbury) as well as two other dive sites. The four dives were all interesting and fun. Dave and Mark ensured that they chose dive sites that would appeal to me. They even managed to order me in some dolphins and a seal.
My only down point is that I am now back in the UK and cannot dive more regularly with Dive North. But I will most certainly be heading straight to them on my next trip to NZ! Thank you both to Dave and Mark for a wonderful couple of days diving.

First off, their shop is a clean, well-stocked, first class operation. Sue is a joy and coordinated with me from the States and even helped me confirm further diving with another shop for White Island.

Besides the excellent diving, camaraderie, and professional atmosphere, I can't fail to note that even though the conditions for diving on the Rainbow Warrior early on weren't the best, later in the week when they did improve Dave and Sue went out of their way to make sure we were able to make that dive. I stumbled across Dive North when another company let me down the day before I was due to start a course with them. Having called around with little hope that I would be able to get on another course being as it was the run up to xmas, I spoke to Dave at Dive North who was only happy to help!
To my absolute delight, I then spent the majority of the week with Dave and the rest of the Dive North team who saw me through not one but three courses, EFR, Rescue Diver and O2 Provider.
The whole experience was very professional, the diving was fabulous with the added bonus of seeing dolphins, and the training was of a standard that is of the highest I have experienced in my diving career so far.
100% recommended to all!

Dive North make it their mission to make your diving holiday the most enjoyable and great experience. From the minute you arrive to the moment you leave you are looked after brilliantly, above and below the water. The "Lady Rose" is a stable and well set up dive boat that gets you to the dive sites in comfort. The best day boat diving in NZ and well worth driving an extra 45mins past the Tutukaka turn off if contemplating a weekend dive trip from Auckland.

FANTASTIC! Im not usually one to dish out a 10 out of 10 but i find it very hard to fault them, having just got back from another fabulous trip with this company. In June I did my advanced course, it included 5 dives over 2 days this was split due to weather but they were very flexible and happy to change our dates so we could still dive the rainbow warrior as part of our course. The dive sites they took us to were extraordinary, they were very informative about the local history pointing out different things. We got to see dolphins playing in our wake! Good pre dive briefs, the boat they use is comfortable and has enough room to get organized and has a good set up for easy entry to the water. I hired gear which was of good quality and had no problems with it. They provided lunch for a small extra charge which was yummy in between dives. There was always a hot cuppa available once you were out of the water. They took underwater cameras with us on a couple of the dives and provided us with some great shots of our adventures. On my trip yesterday we were preparing for a dive when we saw half a dozen orcas playing in the bay not too far from us so we up anchored and went and watched them while we had our morning tea, such an amazing treat. I did two dives yesterday the second of which was the most comfortable i have ever been in the water, this was thanks to the tips and training i received from the instructors, little things that made a huge difference. Dive north are also good when it comes to communications and planning. Always reply promptly to emails and provided all the information we needed when trying to book our course. Prices are competitive and they have some gear for sale, i bought a bag from them and it was a great price. Overall they are lovely friendly people who i would recommend to anyone from beginner to expert, they are the sort of people where nothing is a problem and will do what they can to make sure you have a great diving experience.

I was very fortunate to dive with a professional company such as DIVE NORTH. It was my first opportunity in over a year to scuba dive. I was slightly apprehensive as never done any diving in a cooler climate and I'm always a little nervous after a break. Dave and his team were very friendly. They were very helpful with getting all the equipment ready on the boat while the divers all got to introduce theselves. I was welcomed instantly and knew it was going to be a great day.

The journey out to sea was beautiful - we had commentery on local history and found it very interesting being from overseas. The boat was sufficient in size and comfortable for 6 people excluding Dave and his Instructors/Dive Masters.

First Dive - Cathedral Cave - I was a lucky lady to get to dive this! Quite nervous and in shock with the cold water, I slowly adjusted. My Instructor always made sure I was ok. You have to trust your Instructor and I found it easy to communicate with them in and out of the water which was a bonus. We saw many Large Sing Rays and experienced going into the cave. A bit scary but so worth it! Felt amazing to have experienced that.

Second Dive - The Canterbury Wreck - This dive was AWESOME!!! Impressive wreck, fairly new and put there for our enjoyment! Was fun because our instructor had a camera and we had some classic pics with the wreck. Thoroughly enjoyed.
I have kept in touch with Dive North and am looking forward to diving with them again in a few weeks time. I will then dive The Rainbow Warrior!! This is value for money with a proffessional team looking after us at all times. It really did put me an ease. I would advise anyone to go diving at The Bay of Islands...so beautiful up North!

A great day out - pick up (7.30am ish) provided within the area depending on dive site. Bring the usual stuff for diving. Drop off around 4.30pm. We even saw dolphins on our way back to land :0)

Thank you DIVE NORTH!! Will be blowing bubbles with you soon x

Dive North offer an individualised service, tailoring their trips to your needs and desires. I was lucky enough to be able to do 2 dives on the Canterbury, both of which were professionally guided by Lee one of Dive North's qualified PADI instructors. Our group size was small, the very experienced (and well practised) divers on the boat were given the option of diving in their own buddy groups. The hire gear was very reliable and Dave was prepared with some spare gear which saved the day for some on the boat whose own gear was not as well maintained.

The ride out to the dive site on "Lady Rose" was very comfortable despite the lumpy seas and we were all still dry when we got to our destination thanks to the canopies. An important one for the girls - Lady Rose comes complete with a head (toilet) which takes the worry out of your day, no need to pack the "she wee" !!

The diving was amazing, we chose to do our 2nd dive on the Canterbury too instead of a reef dive so managed to see most of the wreck (and did some penetration yeay). Oh and did I mention that we saw orca . . . . .

Thanks Dive North :)

What a fantastic team, was recommend to me by the hotel i stayed in and was tolled they were the best in the area and he was right.
Gave them a call and spoke to Sue about diving the "Rainbow Warrior" to find out that it was down at 26 meters and that I need my advance PADI that i decided to do as i only had and open water. With in an hour Dave and Lukasz was down to meet me in Pahia to hand me over the advance dive manuel for some night reading. The pick up the on both morning were bang on time and from my hotel which made it nice and easy for me. On the first day we had 2 dive the first was in the morning where we had the pleasure of a couple of seals jumping in to play with us and i think that must have be the highlight until the afternoon and it being the "Canterbury" and what a beautiful wreck.
The next day was the turn of the "Rainbow Warrior" with Lee and again what beauty. The weather wasn't the best that day but when you are down there you completely forget about it.
During my 2 days with dive north i made 5 dives all very different from one and other, complete my advance PADI and had a load of fun with 3 other divers and great team.
Thanks for the warm drink after each dive and the sandwiches for lunch
Wish you loads of succes and maybe i'll be that side of the world again some day for some more great dives.
Thank you
Kind regards

I am an experienced diver and was very impressed with the care and attention to detail during the trips I joined with Dive North. I have dived in many places around the world including the English riviera!! The Outer Barrier Reef and Phi Phi in Thailand. Diving in the reefs and wrecks of the Bay of Islands was a must for me and I am so pleased I didn't pass through without a few dives. The two wrecks are great dives and the reefs have appeal too (especially for the range and amount of fish). The history of the Rainbow Warrior made this dive a moving experience and the Cantabury's sheer size and the amount of life on there meant diving it once wouldn't have been enough to see even half of the ship (so I had to do more!). My most memorable dive so far was actually on the reefs nearby the Cantabury where we saw heaps of sting rays and a huge school of kingfish that circled around us for a good few minutes. Dave and the team onboard made sure everyone on the trips were comfortable and happy with the dives and everyone onboard had a great time. I will definatly return to dive with Dive North again!

I spent 3 fantastic days doing my open water training with Dive North. This was 1 day in the pool and 2 days on the boat doing 4 open water dives. I was a bit nervous about the dives in the open water at first but the instructor was excellent and instilled a sense of confidence and calm which meant that very quickly I felt really at home underwater. We dived a number of reefs around the wreck of the HMS Canterbury and saw loads of really interesting fish and rays as well as lots of other stuff and even saw a big school of dolphins (from the boat that is!)
Everyone was very friendly and there was a good atmosphere on the boat helped by the fact that there were other backpackers diving and Dave and Sue had let us all park our vans on there land.
Really good fun - now I want to go back to dive on the Canterbury!!!

It’s a challenge to plan your NZ diving from the other side of the world, but Sue made it simple, with great communication, helpful advice and by staying in touch during my travels; I could even have parked up my campervan at Sue & Dave’s house. Once in NZ, I was treated to two great wreck dives, including a personal guided tour of the Canterbury by Dave, and much better vis than my usual UK diving offers. The second dives were nice scenic ones as well. Add on the friendly dive team, Dave’s knowledge of the region and his passion for diving and you get a professional, yet relaxed, day out that caters for your own level of qualification. The whole experience was fantastic and very worthwhile, and Sue followed up sending me pictures of our dives. You may dive other sites in New Zealand, but make sure you dive The Rainbow Warrior & HMNZS Canterbury with Sue & Dave and the team at Dive North.

When does start this amazing experience ? When you call to book the dive : a warm welcome by a "guy" called Dave "the Diver" with a Bristish accent. The "D" days, 2 other nice guys are with him, just to be sure that you really enjoy everything.
Dave "the Diver" adapts the dives according to your level and your expectations... and BOOM ! Here is one of your best memories in New Zealand ! Rainbow Warrior, Bay of Islands, Canterburry, Tunnels, caves, stingrays, fishes, hole in the rock, sun, free photos of your dives, smiles...

My girlfriend who is a non diver came along on the boat and had a great time, with a bit of sightseeing and relaxing, and Dave and Ritchie made her feel very welcome on the boat when I was underwater. The dives themselves were amazing, I preferred penetrating The Canturbury to doing the Rainbow Warrior but both are definitely must-do when you are in the Bay of Islands. Between dives we went to the Hole in the Rock and actually were able to go into a little cave inside it and then went through the big hole, whick was an amazing experience, something you can't do on the bigger tour boats. BBQ lunch in the secluded bay was very tasty and filling as well! Thanks for a great day guys and for the photos you sent me!

I had a great day diving with Dive North. What impressed me most was the personal service from Dave and Sue, which started from the moment I sent the enquiry email and Dave picked me up from my hotel. The rental equipment was all new and in great condition.
I nearly didn't end up going as the weather had prevented diving the day before but Dave thought on his feet and we drove up the coast to minimise our ride out, so very grateful for that or I'd have missed the fabulous rainbow warrior. It's a great dive due to the shocking story that led to it's resting home in northland and pretty intact so possible to get right around it and get a good feel for what it looked like in it's prime.
I've dived with many operators all over the world but this was the first time the host has taken a camera down and taken pictures which was great - the pictures are a brilliant souvenir and I'm chuffed to bits with them.
The lunch was simple yet tasty and coming out of the mild water to a cup of tea or milo was great (the roll was so tasty i could've eaten two!)
I thought at first that the price was a bit high but when you consider the service you get from start to finish (Dave even offered to review any purchases of equipment I was looking at which is above and beyond the call of duty) it's complete VFM.
I will be returning to dive with Sue and Dave as soon as I get back to NZ. Thanks Dive North
