Best thing to do in Auckland, impressive landscape and great views. I'd recommend taking the coastal walkway and make your way back via summit road, lava caves and the summit (in that order) to avoid most of the crowds.

Auckland best stop, walk suitable for most.
Toilets at base, 50min direct walk to top, but plenty places to stop: rock outcrops, lava caves, infographics to learn how plants came to be on a volcano without soil. Summit itself looks out to Coromandel, Waiheke and the City. Explore the secrets of the crater during the World wars. We encountered the protected saddleback bird. Incredible.
For saving money in the city: Total cost ~$55
We camped at Panmure wharf reserve, a free for all vehicle site not listed with Rankers. Toilets 24/7. Booking for the 7:30 early bird Ferry, we scored at $23pp. A 6am wake up was more than enough time to organise picnic food (you'll need it) and get to downtown parking, a 1 min walk to terminal with a saturday cost of $10 for the 7.5 hours used.
DOC walk around the island was really great, lava caves were impressive.
We took the early morning ferry to Rangitoto Island, which was good to avoid some of the crowds later in the day. Track goes mainly through bush, with a great view at the top.
Walk to the summit and around the base. Best views and beautiful.
Very easy walk. An amazing landscape, where you could also see lava caves! During the sailing you could see the skyline of Auckland.
We did the summit walk uphill. It was a nice climb with gorgeous views on surrounding islands.
Volcanic Island you can visit by taking a boat. See the skyline of Auckland and do the two hour walk to the summit of the volcano.
Really great walk (2 hours), up a volcano. Really amazing lava caves.
Rather pricey ferry but no guide needed. Amazing view of Auckland. Not too hard to walk up, allow a few hours.
Save up to 70% on campsite fees! Support conservation and experience the natural beauty of NZ. 78 Department of Conservation campsites, one convenient pass.
Amazing views, both on the way up and along the way. I loved it.
Lovely hike to the top of the island. Reward is an amazing view - 360 degree including Auckland.

Very nice track.
It was a nice trip with a wonderful view. You can see Auckland clearly.
It was a really nice trip. We had a beautiful view from the mountain.
Steep climb all the way to the top with lovely loookouts on the way and stunning views at the top! Great walk, especially for people who have not seen volcanic rocks before. Easy walk down.

Lovely walk with superb views.
Very nice scenery, $30 for ferry there and return. Toilets and facilities nearly everywhere.
45 minute walk to the top of Rangitoto. 360 degree view. Spectacular! Beautiful views at the top, huge lava fields. And you have to explore the lava caves - so much fun. A great day trip.
Fantastic walk up and down. Path could have been repaired in certain places and lots of wasps early February. Beautiful views and impressive pest control programme.

It is an easy track, you go up around 200m, the duration is three hours. It is a beautiful view to Auckland and some islands around!
Fantastic hike to the summit, walking through lush bush and an alien like terrain lava fields. You can also explore caves and hike to deserted beaches.
Great view of the skyline of Auckland.
The island was very nice. It was one of my first trips here. The best thing was that there were only a few people. It was nice to leave the city life for a little bit.
You should definitely visit if you are a longer time in Auckland.
After the walk to the top it is nice to relax at the bottom and put the feet in the pool and cool them off.
Nice track, hard for my 5 year old daughter, but the view at the top is a great reward.
Enjoyable walk, feel like you have accomplished something.
Nice and beautiful.
Nice track, with rewarding views of Auckland and the bays.
Thank You - to the thousands of travellers that have contributed to our Top Voted NZ Activities Map - it's free from Rankers.
A nice loop track around the Island. You can also walk until the summit where a lookout is waiting for you. Enjoy the 360 degree view of Motutapu Island, Auckland Bay and many other islands.

Early weekend ferry (so cheaper at 0730 $18) got to summit and walked rim before too hot, went to Motutapu Island to see the difference. Lava caves and coastal track back for 4.15 ferry. Rough lava for walking on and coastal regeneration. Good views of Auckland.
An easy and pleasant hike with fabulous views over the water to Auckland, can just about get away without a torch in the lava caves. Limited facilities.
Great walk through bush and great views.
Volcanic island, very beautiful, interesting landscape.
Good half day walk, plus trip to caves on island worthwhile.
Short climb to top of extinct volcano. Stunning views.
Good, real forest, beautiful lookouts.
Great views and scenery.
Good half day trip when in Auckland. Must do if you have time.

Very good day walk with infomative boards along the route. Great view of Auckland/Bay of Islands from the crater.
Nice Island to visit form Auckland. Impressive views over Auckland.
A great day out but it is a hot walk in mid summer, so bring plenty of water and wear a hat. Excellent views and really different from a normal walk as it's a volcano with lots of volcanic rock. You can do as much or as little walking as you want, we did about 4 hours actual walking. It's also great for families and the kids we saw there seemed to be having a lot of fun. The trip over and the in the boat made the day even better. A definite "to do" when you visit Auckland.
Great at Christmas time! Very hot if sun is out. Amazing view all over Auckland.
Good service, clear routes, could the back museum be open more often?
Nice walk and funny for the kids

Husband has been here before, but i unfortunately missed it this time around. His comments are pretty much like this...
Great place, fantastic harbour views, relaxing 4 - 5 hr walk right around!
Intersting fact: Rangitoto Island was used in the movie 'Under the Mountain'
Volcanic island with fields of lava rock, rejuvenated flora & fauna, great lookout. Easy access by ferry from Auckland.
Steep at times, and lots of other walkers but fantastic views make it all worthwhile.
Ferry to the island is well run and cheap. Good sign posts and estimated times - good all round.
Long walk up to rim of craters. Worth the walk for view.
