Very large site, masses of space for everyone, mostly gravel / dirt - not much grass. Lots of trees / bushes to separate campers. Clean toilets. Drinking water. Road was intermittently noisy with fast cars but not many during the night. Stones and then a sandy beach with rolling waves breaking. Recommended.

We loved this place so much, wish we could have stayed more than 2 nights. Tons of parking, can’t see how it would fill up. Varied spots among the bushes, along the beach, and set back. Lovely waves crashing and beautiful beach (pebble beach). 2 flush toilets with no lights, also no toilet seat, but cleaned regularly.

Amazing site right next to the sea. Little pockets of hedges and trees means you can fine a secluded spot for the night. Great toilet block and drinking water facilities. A little out of Napier but we found this to be considerably better than the free camping sites found there that were crowded and bad toilets. Worth the drive. For those looking for showers we found some for $3 next to the iSite in Napier, excellent facilities.

A lovely spot for an overnight stay. Quite popular, but we found a nice spot between two trees, which was sheltered. There are only two toilets, which were clean and well maintained. Pebble beach and nice views. The shop, pub and chippie are a short walk away. Pub and chippie are closed on Monday, we could not partake - perhaps next time. Prices at Four Square were very reasonable.

We visited Napier on the Monday after the Art Deco weekend festival & decided to do it justice we would stay local & return to do a second day but didn’t want to stay in one of the sites in town as they were very busy, so went to Clifton reserve which was a diamond of a site which we couldn’t fault in anyway, great clean toilet facilities & drinking water on site, Napier town council deserve to be proud, also a short walk to a great local shop & fish & chip take away which is also very popular with the locals. However one of my best treats was the British car museum which is run by a guy call Ian who is a amazing character & his collection of cars is amazing he actually stayed open well past his closing time as he enjoyed as we did talking about bygone year of motoring he is a genuine & lovely guy. I would strongly recommend a visit & the campsite which has ample parking for self contained campers with responsible owner / users will come back here again as Napier is definitely worth a visit

First wild camp stop this 2018/19 trip
Great place next to the sea, a number of motorhomes here tonight with plenty of space between us all.
Parking is pebbles or gravel which is fine as no chance of getting stuck on wet grass.
Noisy waves really adds to the wild location certainly our sort of camp area. The ones nearer Napier were busy and next to road and railway.
Not a place to sea kayak from as big dumping waves.

10/12/18 Back again in really nice weather oh sooo much nicer than our stay a few weeks ago it was busy but plenty of space especially at the northern end.
Great views amazing stars last night its not until you get to places like this you really appreciate just how full of stars the sky really is. Toilets clean drinking water via a drinking fountain so don't expect to fill up your van. Great view to Kidnappers cove which we had sea kayaked yesterday.

Beautiful self-contained campervan spaces right on the beach about 10m from the water. Quite busy but plenty of room. Please be considerate of others when you park and think about who’s views you are blocking (eg some people parked parallel to the water)! Toilets were best we’ve seen at a freedom camping spot so far and there was a well stocked supermarket within walking distance. The rangers did come round to check vehicles, so make sure you are self-contained if you’re planning on staying here. Lovely spot and a great sunrise.

This was an excellent campsite with glorious views - it only loses a point because our motorhome became bogged in river pebbles here. We arrived just after dark and without warning the gravel road we were driving along looking for a spot to park turned into loose large pebbles and we were totally stuck. A huge thanks to the local camper who helped us dig out the pebbles and push the motorhome out of the bog to safety - he told us he's seen at least 5 motorhomes in the last couple of months become bogged in the same place and in the dark you may not notice the road surface suddenly change. Other than that it was a beautiful and quiet place to camp.
