Nice journey in jet boat and kayak through the Whanganui River. We started with a jetboat, then we walk through the forest area and had a coffee break with a bit of history speak and then we returned by kayak. All the visit is guided except the kayaking.
Nice captain and nice ride in a jetboat before the canoe trip (2 hours). Good cruise with rapids and flat areas.

After weeks of eager anticipation for a wonderful trip up the Whanganui river to visit the Bridge to Nowhere, we were totally let down by this company. The day started badly with the operator (Joe) arriving late and announcing that his main jetboat had broken down that morning! Firstly he attempted to get the trailer to get that boat out of the river, but there were issues with its brakes. Then his eftpos wasn't working! Next, life jackets were thrown at us in a heap and we were left to sort them ourselves. We finally left Pipiriki at about 12 noon (10-30 start time) in a smaller boat - 8 passengers altogether. A good commentary running up-river was spoilt by the smell of leaking fuel. Felt uneasy about that. Further up-river the driver stopped to check on hunters he was due to pick up, and turned off the jetboat motor. IT WOULD NOT START AGAIN ! After some time spent trying to fix it and radioing his partner, we were lucky enough to be rescued by the opposition ( Whanganui River Adventures) who delivered us safely back to Pipiriki in a much better boat. Upon reaching Pipiriki (at about 3pm) our original skipper rushed off the boat and disappeared without a word to his let-down clients ! All in all, a very run-down chaotic operation and a disappointing day - we didn't get to the Bridge to Nowhere ! Certainly cannot recommend this company to anyone. The one positive comment is that the young girl I spoke to on the phone when booking was very helpful and pleasant.
I recently had the opportunity to go up the Wanganui River on the jet boats and stay over night at the Lodge, a fantastic experience with a great bunch of people who are very passionate about the region. The lodge is a very unique experience with only boat acces, great food and what a treat, thankyou to wonderful couple of days
"Sad end to a our planned Christmas treat."
We were both really looking forward to our trip up the river, an overnight stay in the lodge and then the Bridge to Nowhere trip the following day. Right from the start we have had problems with this company, problems getting an initial response, eventually contacted GrabOne for help, problems getting them to confirm the date and the time. Each time we rang they had the booking details wrong; they also did not ring us back as they promised. Finally today they changed the meeting time for the boat to the lodge which we cannot manage; It takes 5 hours for us to reach Pipiriki. It wasn't until yesterday that we learned that there is no Pipiriki Cafe, no phone, no cell phone reception so if the boat which takes customers to the lodge is delayed we would be stuck. Its quite a remote spot apparently. We were told that we could leave our car with someone near the leaving point for $10 a day. The boat trip price through GrabOne was $99 each, the lodge for dinner bed and breakfast was $145 each. Previous reviewers have commented that this is a bit steep for very basic amenities. Our GrabOne voucher expires on January 19 so we will not be able to use it and we have lost, what is to us quite a lot of money. We both found the phone calls difficult, vital information was not made available and the confusion over the booking made us feel nervous. We got the feeling that they were not prepared to change any part of their schedule - despite being told that we were the only people booked into the lodge that night. In the final phone call the girl told us that it costs them $300 to send a boat to collect customers; and this was why they would not be prepared to changed their revised schedule.... It was all very upsetting and disappointing. I understand that there are 2 companies operating on the river perhaps the other one is worth investigating
An amazing experience, we were well looked after and had alot of laughs. Truly memorable, especially the spinouts at the end. We are so luckily in Aotearoa to have such beauty that is accessible by a number of means.......Bridge to nowhere tours, you get my vote.....thanks for a top tour! We highly recommend and hope to be back to try another travel in option!
A brilliant experience. Our guide Doug was great, efficient, friendly and knowledgeable and didn't mind being bombarded with questions. The ride up river was nothing short of stunning, this is a truly beautiful part of NZ. The walk to the bridge was easier than expected and the cuppa when we arrived was perfect. Doug must double as a mountain goat to get up the side with that pack! The place is fascinating and there was something haunting about a lonely bridge surrounded by nothing but bush. A great day out, can't find a thing to fault - not even the weather. Will definitely do this again.
Bridge to Nowhere Tours - One of the best trips we have done in New Zealand. Our guide Ben and his family are really knowledgeable about the area. You set out from the Pipiriki base at 10am and get whizzed up the river for 45 minutes with some great information about the river. The walk to the Bridge is pleasant and not to taxing: where you spend half an hour or so taking pictures, relaxing and listening to some history (with a cup of tea and a biscuit provided!).
You can organise to kayak back but if like us you just have the day the Jet boat ride back is great as it includes some spins near the rapids. A fab fun filled day all round!
If you marvelled at Lord of the Rings scenery, this is the place to breath it in! Amazing, unspoiled beauty, tranquility and serenity, where no road can take you, except for the river. The jet boat ride from Pipiriki takes you to The Bridge to Nowhere Lodge in 20 minutes. Another 15 minutes of the boat ride and 50 minutes walk in the enchanted forest will lead to the Bridge to Nowhere, which the time forgot. No roads, no mobile networks, just the nature and the River. Excellent guides and interesting stories. A beautiful lodge, with amazing views over the river from most bedrooms; clean and comfortable accomodation; great dinners, breakfasts and lunches; excellent service with a personal touch; huge farm with cute little lambs, piglets, deer, horses, ponies, emus, goats, chicken, ducks, geese, turkeys, peacocks, dogs and a cat. An ideal place to relax and rejuvenate. Just sit on the veranda and watch the river and the mountains - you can't get enough of this magnificent scenery.
My friends and I did the Bridge to nowhere trip on Queens weekend and loved it.
Our driver/guide Ben was a lovely kiwi bloke, friendly and great knowledge of the area. The coffee and biscuits on the bridge were fantastic at lunch time to warm up the hands! Scenery was amazing and highly recommend the trip and canoeing option to anyone. It's a shame we couldn't stay for a cuppa afterwards. Maybe next time:)
We did the Bridge to Nowhere jet and canoe tour and we loved it!
Our driver/guide Ben was knowledgeable, helpful, fun and friendly. We were especially grateful for the coffee, tea and bikkies on the bridge.
Had a great day and I highly recommend this company and trip to anyone.
Awesome jet-boat trip from Pipiriki ! This Whanganui National Park is well-kept secret ! Will definitely come back !
We had a fun day out for a group of 7, one person was recovering from a leg injury, but he was helped onto the boat, and was able to manage the walk thru the lovely bush to the bridge. It was spectacular, no photo does it justice. not one for heights, I felt quite safe on this solid structure, where we had lunch and a cuppa, and heard about the fascinating history of the area.
Our guide Doug was very experienced, and edged the jet to enable the photographers on board to get some spectacular shots. The drive to Pipiriki is very picturesque too. Great day, nice people.
Fantastic experience, Doug was a great guide and he and Libby proved to be excellent hosts for my overnight stay at the lodge. Highly recommended. Enjoy.
Loved the trip - awesome scenery! ! Ben has sooo much knowledge of the area - thanks for sharing it with us! !
Awesome day on the jet boat! ! Amazing scenery, amazing jet boat driver. Thanks so much for telling us the history of the area, and entertaining us with your stories! ! Will definitely be recommending you : )
do nothing only enjoy the nature
Our adventure began in Pipiriki, with an exciting ride up the mighty Wanganui river in the jet boat to the Lodge - we were blown away by the beautiful setting high up on the river bank, with views up and down the river. Joe soon made us feel at home and talk at length about the river, the Bridge to Nowhere and about himself! The isolation, the peace and solitude were idyllic and memorable, as where the alpacas, the sheep, the bullocks, the ducks and chicken and the profusion of wild life and flowers. Our hike to the Bridge to Nowhere was fascinating, greatly helped by the knowledge of our guide, Ben. His account of the hardship endured by the settlers, made us realise just what an easy life we have ourselves!. Thanks, guys, for making our stay such a happy one.
The jetboat tour to the Bridge to Nowhere is a "must do" for all travellers. It is so much fun to go on the river with 60km/h. Ben, our guide and driver, knows the whole history of the stunning Bridge to Nowhere and he showed us so many pictures and photographs with lots of historical information. He drove the Jetboat safely on the mighty Whanganui River so that we could enjoy the fantastic landscape.
I will definitely come back and do the 3-day-canoe-trip with them, because the Whanganui National Park is amazing and 'Bridge to Nowhere' is the perfect company to take a trip in this area.
Thank you Jo and Ben for this wonderful and funny trip!!!
See you soon :)
The bridge to Nowhere lodge offered great accomodation the rooms were clean and tidy. The kitchen faciities for self catering were very good, with plenty of utensils etc or if you dont want to cook it can all be done for you..On the one night we had a meal cooked for us it was far beyond our expectations. The meals were tasty and well cooked and plenty of it.Joe our host couldnt have done more he was always ready to make our stay there memorable. This would be a great place to take children as the lodge has numerous animals and they are all friendly great for kids. There is a good choice of things to do from walks to trips up river .As I was with a group we also did the trip up river and walked into the bridge to nowhere Our Jet boat driver came with us to the bridge and carried our very welcome cup of tea or coffee.Over all the bridge to Nowhere Lodge is great value and I would do it all again. What a great place it was to watch NZ win the rugby world cup
The perfect destination for our tramping group of nine people at Labour weekend.
Thanks to Joe and his family we all had a relaxing, interesting and fun time. Everything was well organised and the facilities are comfortable, warm and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble for the hosts. There are many outdoor activities in the area, easily accessible by very safe jetboat driving. NZ wilderness at its best!! Cathy.
Thanks to Ben our driver/guide for the day. Just amazing. A must do for all.
A fantastic trip, it really was "nowhere". Great to get off the beaten track.
Having heard so much about this company from many that have stayed here in the past thought we would give it a go as well.
Being a bit of a sceptic myself though, i thought i would do a little googling and read a few reveiws from others first before we did our booking.
After googling the trail info and reading reviews from others, i contacted these guys in regards to biking the Mangapurua Cycle Trail that has been developed as part of the great mountains to the sea cycle way.
This company has it all covered. Every thing from transfers to and from the track, accommodation on and of the track, jet boat shuttles, the works. These guys do it all.
Highly recommend this company.
Fantastic journey into the middle of nowhere. Highly recommended for all to do.
What an amazing experiance we had at this location. A group of us from Australia on a 10 day visit wanted to do some thing a little differant with our time here. So we hired some mountain bikes and road the Bridge to Nowhere mountain bike track.
The guys from bridge to Nowhere organized every thing from bike hire, road transport and accommodation both in Raetihi and on the river.
Keep up the good work.
really great service and accomadation. really friendly and helpful
Great experience! Great guide, super enthusiastic and knowledgable. Good to do off season, we felt like we where truely in the wilderness and miles from anywhere. We did jet boat and canoe, highly recommend it!
Great destination for an adventure weekend trip. Mountain Bike the Bridge to Nowhere track, jet boat to the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge to relax overnight and then canoe down the Wanganui river. The lodge organised all the transfers for us making for very easy planning. A fun mountainbike track with lots of downhills, brilliant views, historical sites - a real remote experience. The lodge is in a serene spot above the river with lovely views. The food was plentiful and delicious, friendly staff and clean rooms. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this lodge!
What a fantastic journey. Took the jet boat tour to the "Bridge to Nowhere" and decided to spend the day canoeing back to their lodge for the night. Highly recommend this operation. Value for money.
fantastic weekend away. hosts were lovely and welcoming, the food was great. The nature and bush is beautiful and the canoe tip is a great way to interact with the kids. recommended to all.
Very amazing experience, would do it 100 times over. JUST AMAZING.
Bike ride, lodge, jet boat, canoeing and service all SUPERB!
Food was very good
Joe and family were very nice and fantastic hosts. :)
RECOMMENDED TO EVERYONE (dont have to be too fit to really enjoy this :P)
A Fantastic trip for the family, biked into the Bridge to Nowhere lodge along what would have to be one of the most stunningly beautiful tracks in the North Island ,also one with historcal significance. Our group of five had various levels of fitness and biking experiance however all loved the ride and finished in great shape.
We arrived at the landing on the river to be met by Joe in his jetboat all set up with bike racks to handle all the gear. After a quick safety brief we were on our way down the river with more beutiful scenery. We stayed at the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge which is owned and run by Joe and his family, such a beautiful location, boat acces or walking only makes this a very special spot.
The lodge was just perfect for our needs with great hosts, food, beds and such special scenery, on arrival we spent several hours soaking up the views from the deck from which you could see both up and down the river.
Diner was a very relaxed event with superbly wholesome food followed by a yummy desert, very much injoyed by all.
The next day our bikes were transported out by boat as we took to the canoes for a cruise down the river to Pipiriki, we chose to paddle the whole distance taking us 4 hours however many people choose to only paddle for a short time and finish the trip by boat.
As for organisation , this was all done by email to the Bridge to Nowhere lodge, they set up the shuttles to the track, accom the night before, boat transfers at the end of the ride to the lodge, canoes for the river trip etc so easy !
This is my second ride on the track this year, a fantastic ride and all round experiance when you combine it with the lodge and the canoe trip on day two, a great two day adventure or longer if you stay a few nights in the lodge and do some walking on other tracks in the area.
This is a trip that has something for everyone, even if you just want to jetboat into the lodge for a few nights, very very special !!
Thanks Guys for an awesome 2 days. Great experience, mixing it up a bit with the Jet Boat ride, wee hike (bridge history) and then the 1 1/2 days paddling. Was brill camping by the river and of course having you guys drop our gear off there rather than us novices (apart from Stu) having to lug it on board. Would highly recommend and am planning for next Easter!
Save up to 70% on campsite fees! Support conservation and experience the natural beauty of NZ. 78 Department of Conservation campsites, one convenient pass.
Great bunch of people and a great experience. Would recommend to all.
Our first mountain bike ride! Brilliant even the first two hours uphill was not too bad. Joe's team have all aspects under control in a very relaxed and confident manner. We overnighted at the lodge and were well fed and very comfortable bed. Good value. Search my video on youtube "biking the bridge to nowhere"

Jetboat trip to Bridge to Nowhere, back by canoe. Jet boat is cool, nice guide and interesting facts, for inexperienced canoe drivers the rapids might be scary, a bit too expensive.
The Bridge to Nowhere Lodge is a fantastic weekend destination for MTB riders; great riding on well formed tracks through pristine NZ landscape, wonderful food & accomodation (and they'll cart your overnight gear in / out for you), genuine hositality, and a magic river to transport you out to Pipiriki where you can grab the shuttle or ride back up to Raetihi. (Note that word UP) Add this to the top of your list.
Joe & the crew offer an awesome service. While doing the Whanganui Journey recently we booked in there for dinner and drinks. What a meal!! Great family atmosphere at the lodge, well worth it.
we took our eldery mother to the Bridge to Nowhere in a wheelchair - which was an experience in itself - Joe and his team were amazing and made our mums, and our own bridge experience just fanastic - nothing was too much trouble. Thank you Joe, we will definitely be back...Maureen
We can highly recommend the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge and the associated services, ie jetboating, canoeing, shuttle buses. The beds at lodge were very comfy, food fabulous, entertainment entertaining all in a very relaxed kiwi kinda way. Jo and his family went out of their way to accomodate our special requirements without any fuss whatsoever and that made our trip so much more enjoyable. We were shuttled with our bikes from Raetihi Holiday Park to the start of the Mangaparua Track then met by the jetboat (along with a much need beer! - every little need was catered for) and taken to the lodge. The next day after we'd been feed, watered and rested we were put into Canadian Canoes and sent off down stream to Pipiriki where our bikes had been delivered to earlier by the crew. After riding back up to Raetihi Holiday Park, Jo's family offered us showers before we hoped in our cars and headed home with joy in our hearts and blisters on our butts. Thanks Jo and Co for keeping it real in NZ!
Joe & Mandy offer a great service opening up a remote area of Central North Island to MTB's. Our party of 12 riders thoroughly enjoyed our experience and highly recommend the ride. The journey down the river by jet-boat culminated a fabulous day. The only damage that could be done to bikes would be by the rider themselves on the track as all transport via road or river is very professional. Thanks Joe, Mandie & Ben! Tony & Helen
We did the transport only option on the "bridge to nowhere" bike tour ,organised by the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge . Everything about the tour was simple fantastic .The transport staff were friendly and hospitable ,the bus ride in is an experience in itself ,as was the stunning jetboat ride out.The cycle track was GREAT GREAT GREAT.If it sounds as so I'm raving a bit ,I am ,the whole day was a Rave. Thanks to those involved from everyone in our group. Cheers
what a wonderful day.. jet boat up .. gentle but interesting walk to the bridge to no where.. the history is facinating.. then being left with out canoe! instuctions from ben alone 2hrs paddling back down the river... real hands on tourism..interesting, active fun - for all age ranges.... a definate to do.

We had an amazing day cycling from Ruatiti over the Mangapurua track to the Bridge to Nowhere. After a great and challenging day we were picked up by the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge team in one of their jet boats - and we proceeded to jet down one of NZ's finest most scenic and hidden rivers.
Our driver was clearly super experienced and knew the river inside and out providing a fun, thrilling and safe ride down to Pipiriki.
A great day supported by a great family owned and run operation.
I now know why this experience is listed on the AA's 101 things Kiwis must do ! and I agree, you must do it. Joe and his team were simply fantastic, incredibly laid back, and extremely accomodating. We took our elderly mother (wheelchair in tow) on the jet boat and walk to the Bridge to Nowhere to retrace her fathers footsteps. Joe and his team were so helpful and we will always be grateful they assisted us tick this experience of mums bucket list! We stayed at the lodge which had such a homely feel about it, the beds were sooooo comfortable and the food and company top knotch. Highly highly recommend, bring your sense of humour, Joe will give you a run for your money !
Spectacular setting! Great food! Comfortable beds, very friendly and obliging people, and efficient delivery of bikes and bodies despite what must, sometimes, become a logistical nightmare.
We did the lazy version of the Kennett Brothers Special, with shuttles to the start of the Mangapurua Track, and from Pipiriki to Raetihi - thoroughly enjoyed it, and would recommend it to any reasonably competent MTBer.
Thanks Joe, Mandy, Ben, and team!
Thanks, Joe and Mandy, for your great hospitality and for the amazing experience staying with you on the river. We enjoyed every minute of our stay - spending time in your home, the trip to the Bridge, jet boating, canoeing down the river, the superb meals and the whole experience. Thanks so much - we will be back. Ken and Jeanette
It was really great!!! Everybody should do that!!!
I’ve just returned from taking my wife and children hiking on the Matemateaonga Track.
To spoil ourselves we decided to stay a night at the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge after our hike and then add on a jetboat tour to the Bridge to Nowhere.
We had a great time and I would definitely recommend Bridge to Nowhere (Jet boat plus accommodation) based on our experience. They have a wealth of knowledge of the area and its history.
We arranged everything by email and always got prompt and helpful replies. We were really looked after at the lodge and nothing was too difficult. Beds were comfortable, food was delicious and service great. Nothing was too difficult. These people provide a very personal service.
I plan to return (from Auckland) to do one of their mountain bike packages.
Wow, what a great trip with Ben who was a fantastic bloke and a great Jet Boat captin.
We had a great trip from Wanganui up to Hipango Park and back. Even though the weather was less than impressive, the senery and Ben's excellent boat handling skills, humor and personality made the day. Hell why worry about the rain, Ben single handidly drowned us like rats with his excellent 360 degree jet spins!!
It was a blast and thanks so much for the fun ride and the fantasic experience Ben.
Would recommend that everyone spends some time on the Whanganui River with Ben and one of his Jet Boats, its an experience you will remember forever :)
What an outstanding day, i have lived in wanganui for 25 years and have never seen up the river. Ben Adam the driver was amazing, he was professional and also knew how to have fun.... The 360's on the boat were just excellent. Hipango Park what a hidden little place that was, we had nibbles and drinks there. I am somebody that has not liked the water and boats but Ben has changed all that for me. Thanks Ben, just awesome.
Sat 18th Dec 2010 - What an experience and just before Christmas! Ben turned up in the beautiful Yellow & Blue, to take the team on an excursion. We cruised up the river tentative and care free, with no clue what was in store later for thee. On the return trip the first couple of spins bought laughter and glee then cries of more please, Yipee! Great work and a treat we will be recommending to many. Thanks heaps!!!
my husband and I were well looked after during our recent excursion to the Whanganui/Taranaki area.
We were interested in doing some tramping and canoeing in the area and Ben and Joe made it all happen. They provided accommodation at the holiday park, dropped us off at the beginning of the Matemateaonga track, picked us up in the jet boat when we reached the river and took us with our canoe up to the bridge to nowhere. After canoeing back to the lodge we were able to relax on the deck and then were surprised with a delicious meal including crayfish. After a nights sleep with all the delicious country smells and sounds, we canoed down to Pipiriki our car waiting for us to toddle off home.
Throughout our whole experience we encountered an attitude that nothing (I mean NOTHING) was a problem. Definitely reccommend these guys for whatever you want to do around the area
We stayed at Raetihi campground then biked from there to the start of the Mangapurua Track. A nice ride with some scenic spots on the way. Up the start of the track to the trig for lunch then awesome downhill into the valley, across the bluffs and down to the Bridge to Nowhere and Mangapurua landing. Canoes and beers were waiting for us! Magic paddle down to the lodge. Big dinner and beers, watched the Kiwis win the league, All Blacks win the rugby then brekkie and off down the river in the jet boat - fantastic ride. Rode out from Pipiriki to Raetihi (tough ride) but worth it great views of Ruapehu. Girl's blouses went in the van. Thanks Joe and family for the best trip we have been on in ages, ferrying our gear and bikes around and awesome hospitality - 6 stoked mtb riders. Chris Ricketts - Palmerston North
If you ever want to stay some where on the Whanganui River, do not over look this operation.
Bridge to Nowhere lodge is out of this world.
We were recommended this accommodation by freinds that had stayed here in the past and gave us rave reveiws of Bridge to Nowhere Lodge that we just had to see for ourselves.
First we did the jet boat tour to the Bridge to Nowhere and then we canoed from the river landing back down to the lodge for the night.
One and a half hours through the most spectacular scenary NZ has to offer.
Booked into the lodge for one night and ended up staying for two.
Food was great, company was fantastic and the stories and history Joe had to tell us were out of this world.
Thanks to Joe and Libby.
Great work guys.
John Jack will be back.
Can't rate our experience high enough. Amazingly beautiful setting, enhanced by the fantastic hospitality of Joe and his daughter Libby (and baby Bella). We were made very welcome at the wonderfully relaxing lodge and Joe's indepth knowledge of the river and it's history made for a particully interesting stay which we have been recommending to everyone. Big bonuses jet boating, the walk to the Bridge to Nowhere and wild pig and venison for dinner.
Thanks Joe and Libby
From Anna and Ken
had a great time and definitely recommend it to others
had an awesome expeience canoeing with great guids ben and becky.joe mandy and libby were great host thanks heaps guys
Well, what can i say.
I wanted to do something special for my family which included an outdoor experience, so i jumped on the computer, started searching and found all about this place called Bridge to Nowhere on the Whanganui River.
Had a look at their site and the reveiws that everyone is raveing about and thought, well nothing can be that good.
So i made a call to this dude called Joe and he promised us the trip of a life time. Well he said he would do his best to give us a great experience.
We decided to do their over night retreat package which included jet boat ride, guided tour to the bridge to nowhere, canoe hire, dinner bed and breakfast, the works.
Joe is one of the most informative guys i have ever meet when it comes to shearing his knowledge of a particular area that he loves.
Born and breed to the Mangapurua/Bridge to Nowhere area, i think he knew it all.
We were blowen away by all of the stories and history that he told us.
Especially the stories of all of his wild cattle mustering and hunting days in the Mangapurua/Bridge to Nowhere valley.
To cut a long story short, if you are ever going to do a tour on the Whanganui River, do not over look these guys.
We had one of the best times ever.
Keep up the good work Joe.
WE WILL BE BACK
Amazing place, amazing host. Wonderful experience. Joe is awesome!
I took a crew to the Bridge to Nowhere lodge for my 40th. It was an adventure just getting there. The River Road is stunning and the boat trip to the lodge was a bit of a stunner. Lots of low mist - the whole ride was exhilharating and a bit eery at the same time.
Joe from the lodge made all of guests feel very welcome. He did a lot of carting of our gear and keeping a fire warm and answering questions about the area. The place itself was such a nice place to congregate. We all enjoyed all the different animals he has out there. It's a bit like Noah's ark, except Joe seems to have one of everything.
The Bridge to Nowhere walk was better than I could have expected too. The walk out was so fun and the bridge looked like something you'd see on one of those Narnia movies.
Joe gave us such a great talk about the history of the area. we were enthusiastic listeners and Joe was very patient with all of the inane questions we asked him.
The kitchen was really big and there was a great dining table and outside areas too.
The Bridge to Nowhere lodge was a great location for a group celebration. Joe is a great host, and I recommend the place to anyone who is keen to sample one fo New Zealand's greatest hidden spots.

Wow, what an absulutley amazing experiance.
I contacted "Bridge to Nowhere Tours" about riding our bikes through the "Mangapurua Valley to the "Bridge to Nowhere" and being picked up via jet boat at the other end of the ride.
Joe the owner said you guys have got to be friggen crazy doing it this time of year. The forcast was not good, snow on the hirizon he reconed.
Told him we wanted to do it anyway.
The night before, Joe rang us to cancel. Not good he said, rain, sleet, cold. Did his best but we were determind to go.
The next morning we met Joe at his holiday park in Raetihi. After introducing our selves, Joe said you guys look hard and stupid enough for this today and besides the weather was on the improve, so we were off.
We started our ride from the holiday park down into the Ruatiti Valley. The ride from the Holiday Park was mostly all down hill and took us one and a half hours to ride our bikes to the start of the Mangapurua Track. At this stage we were still dry.
The actual track section of the ride was very wet a greasy and made for one of the best rides we have done in a long time.
When we got to the Mangapurua trig it started to rain a little, but not heavy and surprisingly it was still quite warm. "We werent sitting around long enough to get cold anyway".
After three and a half hours of riding the track section we finally got to our destination. The river.
Joe was standing there waiting for us with a couple of cold cans of tui and a couple of hot thermoses. He said, your choise. The cans went first.
The trip back out by jet boat topped of an amazing day.
This company definatly have what it takes to up there. Communication, attitude, saftey all taken care of.
Thanks Joe, we "WILL BE BACK"
Did a tour with this company and what a fantastic time we had.
Our guide Ben was absulutley amazing. He has been on the river all his life and the stories and history he has to tell are out of this world. He entertained us to the max.
Stoped at his lodge for the night and his sister Libby, cooked us up an amazing meal.
We will never forget the time we sheared with you guys Ben.
We have been to so many activities in NZ over the times we have been here and your company is right up there amongst the best we have experienced. Value for money was superb. Keep up the good work and hope the baby comes soon Libby.
Hi Ben and Joe thank you for making me feel included whilst being pregnant it was a fantastic tour.
thanks for the great trip guys, good knowledge of the history and the area, awsome veiws, walks and food. Great value for money.
great trip thank you ben and joe. thank you rebecca for the lovely meals and to mandy for suggesting i do the trip
I have in the past canoed down the river stopping for the night in the conservation huts, making my way down the river. Now a few years older I decided to stop off at the lodge where Joe and the family made you welcome. The meals, showers, accomodation and don't forget about the company where excellent. This was a once in a life time experience. The scenery was magnificent. We really felt we had gone back in time. The jet boat trip to the bridge to knowhere was just an awesome experience. Joe was so knowledgable and interesting, and lots of fun.
Then we moved onto the lodge. This is so hard to describe; A homely atmosphere with welcoming people and delicious food.
To sit out on the deck overlooking the beautifull river in such a serene setting will be forever in our memories.
I have travelled all over the world and it would take a lot to beat this experience.
What a fantastic place and people!! My family and I visited Bridge to Nowhere a few weeks ago and we had a blast! Stunning location, beautiful river, and extremely welcoming hosts. The lodge was absolutely suberb as well with great comfortable accomodation, delicious food and a cute mixture of animals.
Thanks Joe, Ben and Libby for a wonderful time! We will definitely be back next year.
Wspanialy pobyt w cudownym miejscu! Miejsce, ktore szczerze mozna nazwac domem z daleka od domu i do ktorego chce sie wracac. Dziekujemy!
Had a great time staying at the Bridge to Nowhere lodge with friends and family. This is my 2nd time back! The hosts are wonderful! All are friendly and welcoming and are full of information on the area and its background. The lodge itself is amazing! Situated high up looking over the river and bush land its really one of a kind. Throughly enjoyed the boat ride (especially the 360 spin!) and the walk into the bridge itself is spectacular, beautiful scenery. Highly recomended, a real must do!!!
wonderful place. highly recomended. 10/10
was friendly great food lovely place all round
What a fantastic weekend Joe. Its a weekend i will never forget. I would really recommend this as a great day out for all ages.
Hey Joe, told you i would not forget to voice my veiw. Well where do i start.
Over the last four weeks we have traveled from North Island down to the South Island and now on our way back to Auckland for our sad return home. Tim and i, as you know have visited New Zealand twice before and spent many weeks/months touring this fantastic country that you call home.
Although we have had some great experiances through out NZ in the times we have been here, in all of our journeys around NZ we have never experianced the hospitality, the time, and the kindness that you were so willing to shear with us. We were just so pleased and amazed that you spent the time to go out of your way and to do a special guided tour just for the two of us alone for the day.
The day was amazing and the stories that you had to shear with us were out standing. You know so much history about the river, the area and the bush and life as once was in the past. You tell the stories as though you were there, and we know you werent, "because you are not that old", but you live it and love it and most of all Joe, you shear it with every one.
We will never forget our time with you at the Bridge to Nowhere and we will certainly recommend you and you company to as many as we can.
As i said to you at the time Joe, the price you charge is rediculously cheap for what you did for us alone.
You are a true ambassator for tourism in New Zealand.
Thank you for a wonderfull time.

While in NZ visiting family we went for a jet boat ride on the Wanganui River with Bridge to Nowhere tours. Amazing day. Will tell every one. Got amazing photos to show freinds and family. 100% fun.
Wanted to take my family visiting from home land on an experiance they would never forget. Booked a tour to the bridge to nowhere with this man Joe. He showed us an amazing time and we will never forget the fun and adventure we had here.
Ours was a day trip only, jet boating on the Wanganui river & enjoying the native bush & unspoiled scenery.....What an experience!! Thanks to Joe for great commentating (with brilliant added humour AND the odd "tall" story to keep us on our toes). The bush walk was an easy trek to the historic bridge and such an interesting account of events from our "local" guide, able to answer all our questions with good knowledge. Joe's calm, SAFETY FIRST approach made for a great unforgettable, highly recommended journey. Thanks, Gordon Jan & Neville
my family and i did a trip up the wanganui river in the jet boat and canoes for the day. This was an awesome trip and i had heaps of fun. our guide joe made the trip really exciting and a good laugh for all of us kids. i will remember this trip for a long time to come and hope we go back up there again sometime. the jetboat and canoeing was amazing what a great day and experince.
a group of us decided to do the jetboat canoe tour up the Whanganui River in early march. we started off meeting Joe in Pipiriki at the coffee shop from there we jumped on the boat and started our trip up through the steep gorges and native bush AMAZING scenery. after about an hour we arrived at the start of the track to the bridge to nowhere after 40 mins of walking through all the native bush surounded by many birds and wild animals we arrived at the bridge here joe gave us a talk about the amazing stories of the birdge its self and the valley. we then disembarked the bridge and headed back down the track to the jet boat. joe took us down the river to our canoes where we paddled the rest of the way. this experience was one to remember what a great day a great tour a great guy and a great price. you really made our day joe!
I went up to the jet boat ride to the Bridge to Nowhere a couple of weeks back and it was a fantastic day out. I was there with my sister and her family, including her young boys. The boat ride and walk to the bridge was a lot of fun, and our skipper / guide made sure that everyone was engaged in the tour. I would really recommend this as a great day out for all ages.
We twelve locals joined the jetboat at Pipiriki on Saturday morning on our way to the Bridge and then to stay overnight at the Lodge. What a ride....the beautiful scenery and pristine water made if difficult to see where land ended and river began. Our host /jetboat driver Jo stopping occasionally on the way to show us points of interest. An hour later we disembarked and began the 40minute walk in native bush where the Black Robins are almost tame enough to touch until we came to the famous 'Bridge to Nowhere" flanked on both ends by every shade of green bush imaginable and bathed in sunlight. After a picnic lunch on the 'Bridge' we walked back to the jetboat and travelled back down river to the Lodge. A roaring log fire and comfy sofa's awaited us with magical views of the river below. Relaxing with our beer's and wines Jo told us a bit of the history of the area and threw in a few 'stories' of his own. Then came the call dinner was ready. Great we're starving!!. And what a feed it was. Thanks to Bec's and Ben for the beaut venison casserole and roast everything followed by dessert!. A bit more talk round the fire then off to bed. Next morning breakie was all laid out and we sat looking out over the misty morning river watching the very friendly Emu, Bambi & Kunekune to name a few wandering around outside. About 9ish its all aboard the jetboat and back to real world- we all want to stay but.....so we're already planning the next trip up. Thanks again Jo and Bec's and Ben for a fantastic experience.
Joe must be commended for his ability to cope with a changing physical and polictical enviroment and present an excellently run business. The presentation at the bridge was excellent.

Wycieczka do Bridge To Nowhere była jedną z najwspanialszych wypraw jakie miałam okazję uskutecznić podczas mojego miesięcznego pobytu w Nowej Zelandii.
Gorąco polecam wycieczkę do Bridge To Nowhere!
Greetings from Poland,
What a fantastic weekend Joe. We had been meaning to come up to the Lodge for a long time and seeing our daughter-in-law's sister was visiting from Poland thought this trip would a great get together for the family. All 7 of us had a beaut weekend from the drive up to Pipiriki on the scenic River Road to the drive back home next day via Raetihi (a much better road). A great time of year (late March) with unbeatable weather and unbeatable hosts.
Joe, thanks a million from my family to yours for an absolutely brilliant visit. Your commentaries on the history of the area were very informative, accommodation and meals top notch.

We had a fun weekend starting with a ride up the river and then a nice bushwalk to the Bridge to Nowhere. We learned a lot about the area and its history with Joe as our tourguide. Then we headed up to the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge, had a big feed and hung out with the animals (dogs, cat, rabbit, pigs, emu, deer, chickens etc). Thanks Joe and co! We'll see you again in a few months for a canoeing trip.
Great experience. The jet boat ride and walk to the bridge was fantastic. Stayed the night and had a wonderful meal. Highly recommended!
Just back from off the Bridge to Nowhere bike ride on the Whanganui river -- We started at Ruatiti and loved it -- great sense of remoteness - history .DOC and the team doing a great job of upgrading this Adventurous Bike ride
Stayed at Joes Bridge to Nowhere lodge -- perfect .Joe is a real character
came down with a group of friends the tour was fantastic,jo was great but the canoeing topped off the whole experiance didnt get too wet haha a++ ill be back!!!!
awsome day on the jet boat! went up the whanganui river with benn and explored the bridge to nowhere benn was a great guied. will recommend this trip to everyone when i get home!!! got some great photos too will email them to you.
What an amazing experience. Would highly recomend the jet boating tour.Had an awesome walk not even the rain could stop us cheers joe we will diffenitly be back for more of your entertaing personality...
Joe, our driver and guide for the day, was great with our kids, 4 and 8. He immediately established a rapport with them, and talked to them by name throughout the journey. Our 8-yr-old was quite apprehensive about the ride at first, but loosened up as the day went on. Joe's friendliness and big block of chocolate certainly helped! So did one of his dogs, Tui, who joined us at the lodge half way up the river by jumping onto the boat.
The walk to the bridge was a bit longer than expected (but not arduous). By NZ standards it's a fairly well developed track (considering there's no road access) with steps, walkways and bridged sections in parts. As a family it took a little longer for us than for the others, but there was no sense of urgency or annoyance from anyone (thanks all!).
The history of the bridge and area is fascinating, and Joe brought it to life with great stories mixed with personal experience, since he's a true local (runs the lodge on the river, again with no road access). Life for the farmers on this land, fresh back from WWI, had been tough, very tough; no surprise that many only lasted 3-4 years before calling it quits. The area has long since reverted from grazing land to natural native bush, and from high vantage points the mass of tree ferns is now a carpet of green.
The weather held off until we started the jetboat ride back to Pipiriki - then the heavens opened. Even despite our wet weather gear, gloves and hats, we all got pretty wet. The river was also rising fast; we could see how far up the bank it had come between the outward and return trips. This made for a pretty exciting trip back!
My memories of this trip will be of the river itself, of the lives of the settlers, and doing a cool trip with the family. The river, this former "autobahn" of the North Island (pre roads and railways), is ever-changing, spectacular, with luscious greenery and abundant waterfalls leaping and spraying off the steep hillsides.
Lucky sunny day in cloudy May.
We did the jet boat tour with the walk to the bridge to nowhere, and two hours in a canoe. It was an awesome experience.
It combines a ride in the exhilariting kiwi machine with history of early settlers, stunning scenery and peaceful paddling with blue ducks.
I surely recommend it.
We started off the day with an amazing drive up the beautifuly scenic Wanganui River Road. We met our guide Ben at Pipiriki where he set us up with lifejackets. The trip up the river by jetboat blew us away, the scenery was amazing and the guiding was A+.
We had a walk into the Bridge To Nowhere where our guide Ben made us a cup of tea and gave us a history of the area. From there we made our way back down to Pipriki, sad out trip was over!
A+ service and the prices were very reasonable, we would recommend it to anyone looking for a great day out!
Great experience for anyone to try!!!
Thanks for the siphoning demo at the start by Joe which set the scene for a very different type of excursion. Typically REAL New Zealand, bit of the real kiwi number 8 experience, no hidden agenda's, just an enthusaistic team very passionate about their area and heritage. Scenery of the Whanganui river not normally appreciated by normal day to day living. The "Bridge" is unbelievable, the Food was wholesome and plenty, the isolation with the overnight stay at the Lodge gave us a brief glimpse to what the early settlers tolerated for several years before leaving this monument behind. Joe's talk on the bridge left us with no doubt of the trials, hardship, the toil these pioneers experienced before finally walking away. We'll be back for the bike trail!! Thanks Joe !!
Came back with our family and enjoyed the second time even more. Ben did an awesome job filling Joe's big boots without any trouble. Family have gone home with brochures to pass on the good time that they enjoyed
What a wonderful weekend from start to finish.19 of us were in the capable hands of Joe, the day starting with a jet boat ride up to the Bridge To Nowhere ,the walk to the Bridge is just so scenic. It was then back to the Lodge which was so relaxing with great views, a cosy fire and wonderful food. The next day some of us wanted to experience canoeing( without rapids)without any hassleJoe and Ben organised that for us, another great experience. This place is truely a Slice of NZ Heaven, put it on your Bucket List.
Thanks to Joe Ben and all the helpers in the Lodge it was great.
Fabulous day, knowledgable and friendly guide (Ben), spectacular scenery. A trip for all ages. Well worth doing.
Thanks to Joe and ben for a great time on the river ,the jet boat ride is a must for all ages, the view of the valley and river is great, the lodge is more like a hotel/motel .Joe and Ben cook us a amazing tea .If you ask Joe he may arange a hunting trip for you in some outback bush where not many people have every seen.Thank to joe and ben Cheers Zane PS the veison was the best we have eating
Outstanding trip, Joe was a great guide for our 2 day river expedition. The accomadation & food were excellent, the views 'amazing', even heard a kiwi at night. We would recomend this trip 'Infact' we have already done so to friends. All round it was GREAT.
Amazing boat-ride and scenic walk to "Bridge Of Nowhere"
Very interesting informations and storys about Whanganui settler history. We will shure come back next summer and stay at least 3 nights in the lodge.
Thank you again Ben & Joe.
We found Bridge to nowhere on the internet by chance when preparing for our trip to NZ back in Decembember 2008. We were going out for a wedding in Hawera and were looking for something different to do on the way down to Wellington - and we certainly did that !
The scenery, the lodge, the peacfulness, the friendly banter from Joe and the overnight stay at the lodge was by far the best part of our stay in NZ (apart from the wedding obviously :-). To be honest I felt totally jealous of Joe because of the fabulous surroundings and natural beauty he calls his home and that our stay waould be so short lived.
The walk to the bridge was amazing and the historic background information provided by Joe at all stages gave us a great understanding of what it must have been like back in those days....and God it must have been hard. The canoe trip back to the lodge is a must even though the walk up to the lodge itsself is a tough climb....but its all worth it when Joe provides you with a beer at the top and you can catch your breath whilst taking in the incredible view.
We would love to return one day as the visit will always be our my memories.

My husbands bucket list included canoeing the Whanganui River! It wasn't on my bucket list. Nevertheless, I was bribed into a 4 day canoe trip on the promise of staying our last night at the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge. For two nights we were in solitary camps, enjoying the serenity and by the third day I was desperate for the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge with its hot showers, real beds and food that was not dehydrated. Paddling into a head wind we came around a bend and there it was, in the distance, in all its glory, the lodge high on the hill. Wow, what an amazing location. After a hot shower we enjoyed wines on the huge deck, seeing other canoeists and jetboats pass below. The food tasted delicious, the company was great, and the bed was comfy. By morning I was anxious about the big rapids we were to face, but good advice from Joe saw us arrive dry at Pipiriki. I had been out of my comfort zone and was overwhelmed at the achievement and to top it off Joe just happened to be at the landing. He approached with a cheeky look and I was expecting a dunking, instead a big hug and congratulations, then of course, I started to cry.
This experience should be on everyones bucket list and we intend to have another night with Joe and his family only this time not arriving by canoe. Thanks Joe and family for sharing your piece of paradise with us.
A great family adventure, loved by adults and kids (ages 6, 8 and 10). The scenery is stunning, and the walk to the bridge is beautiful and easy to do. Joe was is knowledgeable and friendly, and clearly loves his job. Dinner at the lodge was great home-cooking, with very generous helpings. The boys were blown away by the marvellous menagerie of docile animals wandering around the lodge, and had fun trying out the canoes on the river in the morning before we sadly headed back down to Pipiriki.
Excellent value trip by Father + Son team: friendly, knowledgeable, mind blowing scenery (think film ''Deliverance") exciting walk section - started as 4 hour trip but we had 6 hours total. Everyone should do this - kayaking back also option.
Nice experience. Very informative. Safe journey up the Whanganui River. A bit unsure on a few safety issues. When you hop off the boat to start the hike, need steps to climb onto. Especially for the older tourists'. Apart from that had an enjoyable day.
On a six week holiday in NZ this was one of the most outstanding experiences that we had. The Whanganui River is astoundingly beautiful and Joe and his family made our visit there a real delight. The combination of jetboating and canoeing and swimming in such beautiful surroundings left us with memories that we will never forget. A brilliant option for families - our kids are 6 and 9 - and they loved being at the Lodge with all the animals and then getting on/in the river. Go, you'll never forget it.
We started from Raetihi at 8 am spurred on a friendly wake up earthquake! Biked along back roads for about 40 km before we started the Bridge to nowhere MTB/hike track (now upgraded as a cycleways project - its about 40 km. The ride is mostly 4 wheel drive tracks now less technical riding than b4). With the help of a handy brochure we got so fascinated by the history we were surprised when the bridge to nowhere suddenly appeared before us! A quick ride to a Whanganui river landing was made SOOO much more enjoyable by the beer Joe & Ben left for us! A fab jet boat ride whisked us to the lodge for a solid festival of eating, hot showers and tranquility! This lasted til the morning when we launched ourselves in the lodge's canoes for a trip to Pipiriki! After a wonderful glide thru the mystery of the river (and a watery blessing in one of the rapids!!) we arrived at our destination to find a shuttle waiting to take us back to our cars at Raetihi. Joe and Mandy had organised a wonderful package for us - a complete adventure in the wilds - well worth the experience - one of those special moments we will always remember!!!
The experience was amazing. We stayed in the lodge overnight and the meal Joe & Ben cooked was good. It was an easy walk to the bridge but quite a grunt to get to the lodge. The jet boat ride was cold and we could have used more layers of clothing. More information beforehand would have enabled us to be more prepared, perhaps the website could include advice on what you might need, timings, etc.
We had a wonderful stay in your lodgle "Bridge to Nowhere", it was an amazing place with a beautiful sourrounding! Food was good and the rooms were comfortable!
We definitely wanna stay longer the next time when we´re coming!
What an amazing place, and tour. Joe and Ben were awesome guides, friendly and very imformative.
Our stay at the lodge was amazing, especially when you consider the isolation of the place, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The evening meal was a great hearty feast exactly what you need after a day on the river, and all the staff were very friendly and helpful.
I will be telling all my friends about this as it is a great way to experience the Whanganui in Comfort.
Stunning scenery, haven't seen much in NZ that compares in its grandness.
The tour itself is great fun, we did the 2 day canoeing starting at the bridge, sleeping at Joe's and paddle on the next day to Pipiriki. Joe is awesome, taking care of everything. He and his family give the tour a real personal touch, unlike some of the 'others' I recon.
The best 2 day adventure. This is a must do. Fantastic mountain bike down the historic Mangapurua Track. Jet boat transfer to the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge for a night of warm hospitality and delicious meals from Joe and family. Next day canoe the best of the Whanganui River to Pipiriki - spiritual, serene and spectacular. Absolute tops and so easily arranged by Joe at the Lodge.
What an amazing place! A well-run and welcoming accommodation in the midst of an absolutely gorgeous national park. I have rave reviews about the whole stay. Activities were excellent: the thrilling jetride to the lodge, a beautiful hike into the bridge, exciting canoe rides. The lodge was charming, neat and delightfully eclectic with a baby deer and emu. And most importantly the hosts were awesome. Joe kept us entertained with tales the whole stay, and efficiently made sure everything that we wanted to do happened, all in his relaxed and friendly style. Libby cooked up a feast, and turned a remote location into a 5-star lodge.
DEFINITELY DO THIS!!!
This Lodge is a wonderful oasis in the middle of a spectacular setting. Joe caters to your every need - want to canoe, kayak, walk, bike? Joe makes it happen. His boat will deposit you and your vehicle of choice (which he provides) for any length of travel you want. Or just stay and take in the gorgeous scenery of the river from the well-maintained lodge and its comfortable rooms, where Joe's daughter Libby makes the experience superb. Her gourmet meals, service, and care throughout the Lodge truly made our visit here exceptional.
Thank you Joe, Libby and Ben for making our stay at your Lodge so memorable- You were all so hospitable and welcoming together with a fabulous meal cooked by Libby- We were 14 so quite a group.
The accommodation is clean and comfortable -more than adequate with shared facilities- VIEW Magnificent & our group loved all the varioius pet animals you have around the house.
What a special place the Whangnui River is- So glad Jenny Partick wrote 'The Landings' as it inspired us to travel there and made the trip so much more interesting. We will all recommend that travellers have a night with you. Best wishes from our Team Regards Dale
we took the bridge to nowhere retreat package (staying at the lodge for overnight and taking the trip to the bridge the next morning) in late February.
let's make it short: JUST RIGHT!!! vacation within the vacation
nice ride, relaxing afternoon on the terrace overlooking the river valley, good food (don't miss the pre dinner snack :o), nice talking and a very fine trip to the bridge with excellent explanation for the history, great hospitality.
i definitely recommend this trip especially this relaxing combination with staying overnight at the lodge.
p.s. don't let the "office" at pipiriki make you wondering whether that was the right choice, as mentioned: IT IS! :o)
thanks joe and ben!
joe und ben, vielen dank!
Firstly I must explain that we live in Rotorua so are spoilt rotten with mountainbiking heaven right on our back doorstep. But the grass is always greener over the fence so we are constantly seeking venues for new adventures, and the Bridge to Nowhere just happened to be on the "Bucket List"
We stayed at the Raetihi Holiday Park on the Friday nite, grazed and watered at the local Cosy Club, (the rodeo was in town so she was humming) and rode the 70km on the Saturday. I can't say enough about the ride. There's a bit of everything from tar seal at the start to some muddy bits toward the end, with a good amount of fast downhill and some easy uphill ( only about 4km uphill). There's a few swing bridges, they are all rideable other than having to lift the handlebars over each end, some cool kiwi scenery that we as kiwis almost take for granted, even a few goats that appeared on the track that were good sport to chase. There's plenty of time to take in the scenery and pick a few spots for picnics and photos etc along the way. The bridge is suddenly there as you round a corner it just appears, literally out of nowhere.
From the bridge it's a short ride to the river, great fun, and the Ben was there with the Jetboat on time to take us all and our bikes down river to the lodge.
The hospitality and meals were second to none. Joe certainly knows how to look after us. The setting is awesum with magic views of the river and surrounding bush.
The paddle down the river is pretty special, and the water was even warm, for those of us that ended up in it. Plenty of laughs, and we even found a nice coffee at the end. The ride to Raetihi ( 28km) is just a gentle grind uphill, mostly on a tar seal surface, with a few kms of loose metal thrown in just to keep it interesting. The comments from all involved were" the best ride yet".
I'd like to rate this one 11/10
11 Kiwi Pensioners joined Joe Adams for a very exciting trip to the Bridge to No where. We were made to feel very safe by a very professional operator.Who thrilled us, and amused us with his stories, and river history during our time in the jet boat on the river. We stayed at the lodge, and enjoyed a second day for bush walks and exploring. Libby did a fantastic job with the food which was as good as you would get anywhere. Dinners were set out beutifully and tasted wonderful. The nibbles ar 5pm each day were very tasty and well presented. Bar prices very reasonable. Altogether a very memorable trip
Had a great time!! The river is just majestic, and by going up with the Jet and paddling back we could get all the good things in 1 day!
i'm 12 yrs old and I was so tired when we arrived at each camp site but that did not matter cause I had so much fun i just can't say it. going down the river for 3 days and on the forth day I had a jet boat ride it was great (thanks joe).I really enjoyed this camp and I'm so gonna come back.I say it is 100% brilliant. and kelly and dave were so cool and joe and one other guide but I just can't remember his name thanks to all of them for taking me down the river safely and making it so much fun 10/10
What a wonderful 4 day trip down the Whanganui River! Our group of 11 were shown a fantastic time. Ben arranged our accomodation at Raetihi, and bus transfers to and from our train at Ohakune, our trip down the river, even our dinners in Raetihi!!! Our guides Kelly and Lyall looked after us brillantly, meals on the river where great - we even had table cloths and flowers. An inspiration to all chefs out there, what you can do with two gas rings and a wok! Kelly's knowledge of the river and his stories made our group of first timers feel very safe, and in good hands. Lyall's care and not to be beaten attitude - made the conquering of the second to last rapid a real buzz for Brian. The stillness and beauty of the river was remarkable, the scenery, bush and untouched landscapes unique After two nights sleeping in tents , we spent the third at the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge, set up high with a great view of the river, the pets, feeding the deer and seeing the dogs and rabbit all surviving in perfect harmony! Your Hospitality was second to none! Ben took us on a jet boat trip when we got to the lodge, that saw us laughing and screaming at the same time - that rounded off a great day. The walk into the Bridge to nowhere was a trip not to be missed. The history of the past settlers and their stories and struggles quite unique. Many thanks to Ben, Kelly, Lyall, John Libby and Mandy for your hospitality, always smiling, always sharing time with us and going out of your way to make our holiday really memorable. As your website states "arrive as strangers leave as friends" is really appropriate.
11 of us did the 4 day guided trip from Whakahoro to Pipiriki. We were bused from Raetihi through interesting off the main road country to Whakahoro. For 2 nights we tented and on the third we stayed at the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge. The scenery on the river is wonderful. The walk to the Bidge to Nowhere is a must - the history of the area is there to be seen and felt and the scenery again. Kelly, our main guide, has a wealth of knowledge of the river and surrounds and is a great cook. With Kelly and Lyall, our guide also, we were well looked after and the stories we have to tell! Thank-you; Ben for organising us, Mandy at Raetihi Holiday Park for housing us, John for busing us everywhere, and Kelly and Lyall for everything along the way.
The place was terrific! I would highly recommend it - not only is the scenery gorgeous but the lodge is comfortable and clean, with a wonderful staff. Joe, the owner, was great to chat with, and accommodating in every way possible, and Libby was similarly kind and a wonderful chef! Fun kayak and canoe options were also great.
Definitely work this lodge into your trip!
Don't miss this experience! I live in Whanganui and last weekend took a third group of overseas visitors on the jetboat tour to the Bridge to Nowhere. The jetboat is grunty and fun to ride in. The river is beautiful and the scenery is downright stunning. But you can get beautiful rivers and stunning scenery all over the place. What makes this tour stand out is Joe, a "Real Kiwi' Bloke", a great ambassador for New Zealand and particularly for this area, an expert on the River and its history, and a story teller par excellence! He is so funny !!!!! Joe is safety conscious and a jet boat expert. Put these two together and you can relax and enjoy a great jet boat experience. Keep your camera ready if you want amazing photos. I'm not going to tell you about the Bridge to Nowhere itself....I'll keep that a as surprise for you. And it will be! I rank this trip as a 10 because it is unique, fun, informative and very good value for money. More power to you, Joe. Next time we'll do an overnighter in the Lodge as well.

If in doubt; GO! I had a wonderful time.
The scenery on the river is stunning. The lodge is comfortable and cosy. The ambiance very relaxing. The things-you-can-do-list sheer endless.
The owner Joe is a character, and a good one, for that matter. Eventhough almost everything broke down while I was there, he managed to let everyone have a great experience. Great job!
We took the jetboat up to The Bridge to Nowhere. Did the little walk, had great coffee and got the explanation about the bridge on the bridge. Than walked and jetboated back to the lodge. We explored the lodge and all the pet-animals. We had an hour to kill untill proper wine-time, so we took a little hike up the mountain behind the lodge. A steep trail, so it was 1 hour of effort, but what a view!!! Absolutely amazing!
In the evening we were pampered with good wine and nice food on the deck with view on the river, and enjoyed good company of other guests and Joe himself. After dark we did some stargazing. Since there are no towns or anything to pollute the air with light, they were truly abundant. We slept like babies in our comfy beds. And after breakfast , we kayaked out. We would have liked the river to be a bit more challenging, but she was (at the very least) stunningly beautyful!
In short: great experience, it would be a shame to miss out on it!
On a tour with ANZ Nature Tours with 10 fellow passengers through New Zealand my wife Silke and I enjoyed our short stay at Joe`s place extremely and will never forget these wonderful hours with Joe and his daughter (and all of his animals)!
The scenery next to "Bridge of Nowhere" was as awsome as was the dinner with a good bottle of New Zealand wine.
Is really is a pity that Joe's place is so far away, otherwise we would come again soon!
This was a very worthwhile experience. Jo added to the stunning scenery with his true Kiwi personality to make the day an unforgettable experience. We will be back and next time stay in the lodge. Thank you very much!
Amazing and beautiful scenery; be prepared to wait at the start; definitely worthwhile
Bumps n Scrapes
A bunch of 30-40yr old mountain bikers. We had a blast.
Stayed in Ratahi the night before, fine for the simple stop-over for the ride the next day.
Transfer issues seamed a little disjointed but got to the ride without incident.
The ride itself was a blast. With the bulk of the climbing at the start.
If you are a faster than usual group, be prepared for a bit of a wait till the predetermined pick-up time.
There is Zero coms down at that end of the trail.
Joe's set up is great. The rooms are nicely appointed & very clean. Lots of space to relax & kick back.
The food was Awesome! Exactly what a bunch of MTBers need. A good selection & TONS of it!
Oh, that little fridge is actually a Tardis.
We canoed to Pipiriki the next day. Very scenic. Oh, & the grade 1 rapids still caught some of us out.
All in all, an excellent trip & really recommend Joe's place.
The river is absolutely beautiful - definately a must see. Joe is extremely kind and will go out of his way to help you. I would give it an 11 out of 10 if I could.
Stayed at the Lodge overnight 3rd March - Joe and family great hosts - and enjoyed the company of others, accommodation very good. Only one on the 4th for the trip to the Bridge, so was spoilt - Joe has such excellent knowledge of the area and one could appreciate his love for the area. It was one of my "Bucket List" activities. We are in the older age group, but it is worth a visit Gold card people!
A brilliant bike ride with an even better Lodge at the end. Joe and his team deserve maximum praise for the way they came out to (potentially) rescue us with tents and survival gear which, fortunately, we didn't need. And the hospitality at the Lodge was first class. Even if you go the "soft" way by jet boat from Pipiriki it's an expereience not to be missed. See also Tim Donoghue's review about 9 places down from this one.
On 27th Feb canoed down the river with 5 mates. Stayed the night at the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge.Sat on deck above river drinking cold beers (very reasonably priced) and eating nibbles with great views. Hot showers, nice food and comfy beds.
Joe, I think you and your family offer a GREAT KIWI EXPERIENCE with genuine friendly hospitality.Good value for money especialy as every thing has to be boated in.I can highly recomend and I will be back. Thanks again for our stay Brendan.
A special spiritual corner of the world where the call of nature, the Whanganui River, the vast landscape, the mystique of the Jetboat tour to the Bridge to Nowhere etc etc will touch your heart. Stay at the Lodge - a beautiful sanctuary set high overlooking the river - catering for all your needs in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. You may even find out something about yourself. Huge thanks to the great people who work hard to make this happen. I will never forget. Andy
Fun, informative, scenery amazing, expensive.
The bridge to nowhere trip and subsequent stay at the lodge has been one of the highlights of our trip. The trip up and down the river is awesome with truly spectacular scenery. The walk to the bridge is really pleasant, but the whole experience is made by Joe's story telling and explanation of all the events that led to the settlement of the area, construction of the bridge and subsequent abandonment of the settlement.
Joe is passionate about the Whanganui river and is a relaxed and gracious host . The lodge is really comfortable, spotlessly clean, has a great
atmosphere and Libby provided a wonderful dinner.
The Bridge to Nowhere jet boat tour was amazing. The bridge itself is interesting, and the hike to the bridge is enjoyable and not difficult. The scenery as we traveled through the Whanganui River Valley was spectacular, absolutely unbelievable!!! Our tour guide, Joe, was knowledgeable and great fun. He provided wonderful customer service, even following up after the tour with good ideas - service above and beyond the call.
The weather was heading wet, Joe arrived on his personal highway [the river] in his jet boat to pick up the five passengers on this trip to nowhere.
The experience that unfolded could not be described without excessive use of language - it was awsome. We go up the river, its waterfalls, the cliffs, the slotted gullies all rolling out for ever in front of us. We see blue ducks winging away in front of us and occasional canoeists paddling downstream. We had the area to ourselves. Peace and excitement all rolled into one. We land at the pathway to the Bridge to Nowhere ad after a snack, start up the easy track and boardwalk to the bridge - 45 minutes away. We pass through regenerating bush and see wild goats feasting on the new growth of fragile indigenous trees - shame but it has to stop in order to regrown the natural. finally, the bridge. The sun is out now and rain all gone. Wonderful, gorgeous and unique.
You will enjoy your trip with Joe or his sons.
Value for money - scale 10
Value for experience - scale 10
After finishing our 4 day tramp along the Matemateaonga track we were invited for morning coffee and biscuits at Joe's Lodge, where we were able to read many pictorial history books about Wanganui and its beautiful river, in preparation for our jet boat trip up stream to the Bridge to nowhere. Joe's laid back hospitality, knowledge of the early river settlements and skillful handling of his jet boat was outstanding. Our boat trip up river, the 40 minute walk in to the bridge and return trip to Pipiriki was one of the highlights of our week in the Whanganui National Park. We only have one regret. We should have missed out staying at Puketotara hut and spent our last night at Joes well appointed lodge and listened to more of his entertaining experiences.
The Bridge to Nowhere Package is a must !
That was amazing ! Erwarten Sie keine Luxusherberge, sondern ein unvergessliches event mit grandiosem Naturerlebnis. Dies hoffentlich bei schönem Wetter.
Well, what can you say about Joe. He's a real nowhere man, living in his nowhere lodge, making all his nowhere plans for everybody. He has a point of view, knows not where he is going to (thank God Mandy - the real power behind the throne back in Raetihi - Ben, Matt and Libby do). When you visit Mandy Joe and the team you can pick the easy or the hard way to arrive and depart the Lodge. The bike ride in from Raetihi is definitely easier and more pleasant - even for those of us who have come of age so to speak - than the jet boat ride up river. It's a real breeze. The paddle out from The Lodge (a year earlier) was equally pleasant. Joe and his crew have all the search and rescue bases covered as recent biking companions Bill, Alan, Angela and paddling companion Gabrielle can testify. Not that we needed them of course. The second trip was as good as the first. Any ideas for a third trip Joe?
If you want the "Deliverence" experience without the hillbillies this is the canoe trip for you! Almost sixty miles in three days paddling down the incredible Wanganui river with all you need on board. Stopping overnight at wilderness campsites and meeting other travelers after a hard days paddling, It couldn't have been better. And you know however remote it feels, Joe and family are keeping an eye out for you. Thanks again Joe, fantastic!
We had a great trip. Enjoyed the information given to us by both jet boat drivers, Joe and Ben on the history of the river.
The hike to the bridge was an easy walk and very informative.
Thanks Ben we look forward to another visit soon.
Really great communication from Joe to organise trip. Jet boat ride up river was fun, but had hoped that the operator would tell us a bit about the history of the area, or points of interest as we went up (stopped once to tell us where cabin/toilets were). Explored on our own and found a cool waterfall which was the highlight of our trip (would have been great if it had been pointed out - as we could have easily missed it).
The trip was harder than we expected as we were all beginners and thought that there would be enough of a current to take us along, but really had to paddle hard for the whole journey. Bit too long and not as fun as I had hoped.
those 2 days were awsome... WHANGANUI River should be the start of your holiday in new zealand. most of the ppl are going straight to Roturoa ... or maybe stay in auckland...but those who are doing this.. are missing a huge thing.
the crew, the environement is GGRREEAATTT.
after two hours of paddling, when you are going up to the lodge ... we can see this incredible view. that we can see nowhere else..
I hope that visitors will have the opportunity to go NOWHERE LODGE..
NZ is such an amazing country its hard to pick the a favourite spot, but the few days we spent on the river with Joe and his crew where amazing. you havent been to NZ until you been here. awsome scenery, great lodge and loads of fun, will see you guys next year
We had a fantastic time with The Bridge to Nowhere crew. Joe and the team were fantastic hosts and we loved the remote national park environment - magic! We took the jetboat up river, then settled down to a really good feed and comfortable night at Joe's remote river side lodge. The next day we enjoyed the Bridge to Nowhere walk and finally kayaked out. Great fun for all the family, really professionally run - thoroughly recommend it!
What a great day of Mountain biking. We took the round trip starting at Raetihi with transport to the track start for us and our bikes. the track is not too technical but still lots of fun with multiple swing bridges to cross and bluffs to traverse. The track was in the process being upgraded and after the section where four wheel quad bikes can't proceed was in excellent condition. An easy 5hr ride.
The day was totally topped off by a superb trip down the river in the jet boat. The drivers were all friendly. Great experience
Take It Easy Tours have taken two tours to this fabulous area during January 2010. All 30 travellers raved about the accommodation, food and jet boat ride.
HIghly recommended to ALL ages.
The Bridge To Nowhere Lodge swam into our vision 'literally' after a tough, wet and windy paddle from the John Coull campsite further upriver. We were on a trip with Canoe Safaris from Ohakune with our excellent guide Laura, and while we knew we were staying in a Lodge, nothing prepared us for this fantastic place. We got a great and almost Irish welcome from Joe (and one of his exotic birds whistling). I have to say Joe is an absolute character, he told me has spent time in Cork, and after chatting to him, I'd well believe it, as he's one in a million, and it was the most comfortable and friendly place I've stayed in a long time. His son Matt let me feed their little pet deer Spikey with a bottle, and I slept like a log after several glasses of wine. I will definitely be back, an will recommend this gem to anyone I meet! As an old saying in Ireland 'May the road rise up to meet ye, and the wind be always at your back.'
Had a fantastic couple of days. Joe took us up to the Bridge by jet boat, showing us the best routes to canoe the rapids for the way back. He gave us the full guided tour, explaining the history of the area in his own personal way. That night we stayed at the Lodge, which is a wonderful oasis of calm on the banks of the river, and ate a hearty dinner and had a chance to swap stories with the other guests over a beer. After a peaceful night's sleep in a clean and comfortable room a few of us canoed back down the river for a few hours. One of the best aspects of the trip is that Joe will tailor it to suit your needs.
Reservation process could be better organized (maybee with a computer reservation system?). Nevertheless, these guys should not be rated to much for their organisational talent, ratter then for their real life adventure with the faboulous ride on the river with the jetboat, the easy walk to the "bridge to nowhere" and last but not least the many "insider" story behind that big thing out there in the forrest. We can recommend this tour to anyone. Hope you have a chance to book this trip with Joe and have a great day out!
Just had a fantastic experience on a 3 day canoe trip down the Whanganui river with 'Bridge to Nowhere' The trip is a must do for anyone who likes outdoor experiences. My wife and I decided to do this trip to enjoy a different experience so we had something to look back on as a unique experience in NZ. We've done lots of hiking/mountaineering elsewhere and though NZ has lots of that as well, we really wanted to try something different. The scenery and experience is amazing, the river not so scary even for novices (we'd never done any canoeing before) but the experience is made even more worthwhile by the hosts. Ben and Matt are both great-quick to respond to emails before the trip, things easily sorted out and level of support is just right leaving us to enjoy an independent experience but feeling there was back up if we needed. Matt came across the river to join us for a beer on the second night and Ben came over to say hello whilst out on his powerboat taking non-canoeists up and down the river. I would highly rate this trip and the hosts.
joe and ben are wonderful hosts and guides.the experience they provide is great.they went out of there way to accomodate my wife's 88 year old mother so that she too with her walker was able to experience the trip to the bridge to nowhere as well as the jet boat rides from and back to pipiriki.a year ago my wife and i experienced the hospitality at the bridge to nowhere lodge also with joe and ben and others-comfortable country hospitality.don't miss the experience.
FANTASTIC......we had a wonderful day. The staff are all really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We learnt loads and had a great experience. The jet boat was awesome. Some of our party also too the canoe home, which has already become a much talked about topic of conversation at dinner. A great outfit, who we would recommend to all. Thanks for a GREAT day.
Had an awesome trip up the Whanganui river. Went up the river in a jet boat from Pipiriki with Joe from Bridge to Nowhere Tours. Beautiful scenery everywhere, walked up to the bridge to nowhere through bush and Joe told us all the goss about the people who built it and lived there. Cheers for th cuppa and biscuits. Then put us in a canoe to paddle our way back, we had heaps of fun at our own speed. Good work team. Stopped at the lodge on the way down and will definately have to stay there next time. Awesome fun jet boat and canoe.
Tremendous time. Two very good nights in good company, comfortable bed at the Lodge and excellent food and service. Impressed by the no nonsense way Joe and the team run the operation and by their willingness to go out of their way to help people who ran into a "spot of bother" on the river. We will go back.
Mum & Dad gave my hubby & I this trip for Christmas. It was their 3rd visit to the Bridge to Nowhere! We have 2 x 12yr olds and a 14 yr old who can be hard to impress. They were impressed! Jet boating, kayaking or canoeing and a bush walk to the Bridge. Lots of laughs. An amazing lodge with a great home cooked meal to finish the day was just awesome. (It was also good that the showers were hot due to Mum & Dad's tip out of their canoe!). Joe & family you are great ambassadors for NZ and what the country has to offer. I am sorry we didn't let the kids bring home a puppy each - but thank you so much for sharing your home, your pets and magic spot with us!
Well we can't thank Joe and the team enough for our fabulous experience. From the ease of booking till the drop off at pipiriki. All twelve of us had a fantastic time. The food, the lodge, the environment all excellent. I must say a special thank you to Joe & co for travelling with us down the river in your jet boats looking after our team of what you might say average canoe skills. Thanks again Bridge to Nowhere and rest assured we will be back!
Wanted to do one of the AA NZ 101 must does, so got the book and did two at once with this company.
What an absulutly fantastic way to spend a day.
Did a tour to the Bridge to Nowhere and after seeing the river and what it had to offer, decided to do the canoe return option.
This company is the best.
A huge thank you to Matt our instructor and guide for the care he took with us on the canoeing side of things.
And thank you Joe for a fantastic day.
We will be back.
Wow! what a very cool experience. A big thankyou to Jo and Mandy for being fantastic hosts, amazing cooks, incredible Jet boat drivers and above all really neat people. The lodge is an awesome relaxing place to stay with wonderful views and very comfortable clean rooms. I highly reccommend spending a few days with Jo and Mandy and experiencing this beautiful part of NZ, you won't regret it!
Thanks again and see you soon.
Bridge to Nowhere Lodge: This is my 3rd experience with the Lodge so it covers the 3 trips :)
Nov 2008 & 2009: Joe & the crew organised twoYear 9 Class camps (30 kids & 10 adults each year) with a stay at Tieke & Pipiriki Marae for 4 nights on the river. Kelly was our guide with great support from Ben Joe and the team for a truly memorable journey for the students, parents and teachers. They catered for vegetarians, dairy & gluten-free people and provided 3 decent meals a day for 38+ hungry canoeists. With the lovely kaumatua providing tangata whenua insight from local iwi and Kelly and Joe's superb local knowledge and river craft skills, alongisde the breathtaking beauty of the Whanganui River, the students, parents and teacher will treasure the journey you shared with them for many many years to come.
December 2009 Thanks Joe, Ben, Libby (& Tui & Jess the dogs) for an awesome stay at the Lodge. Our group of 6 was grateful for the clean beds, cold beer and wine, and the wonderful relaxed hospitality from the crew. We brought our own dinner, but Libby's 3 course dinner looked way better than ours (so did breakfast!)
Thanks for sharing the local wildlife you've rescued with us (the bambi, possum, peacocks etc) and treating us to a fantastic Whanganui River experience - you guys are hard to beat! Thanks Ben for organising the shuttle and the canoes and for the night at Raetahi Holiday Park before the trip
We're back in February with 12 more paddlers to spread the word! Kanui te pai :)
Cheers Hana & Pete
going from wanganui to pipiriki on the Mail Run was a really teriffic experience.Noel was knowledgable very friendly and experienced driver who showed us many points of interest along the route. Highly recommend this trip instead of self drive.Jet boating with Joe to bridge to nowhere was an awesome
experience, with his immense knowledge and history of the river he kept us entertained in the most wonderful kiwi style. Highly recommend this company.
What a enjoyable fun thing to do. Lovely place to visit, awesome scenery, great boat ride, pleasant walk and the lodge was great. It was clean, attractive with very helpful and friendly staff. Very easy place to relax in. Special Thank You to Kayla for great meal. A must do.
The Brigde To Nowhere Lodge, Walk and canoeing were some of the best things I experienced while staying in New Zealand. Especially the lodge is really neat and the location is truely outstanding. The staff ist very polite and helpful and I had the best dinner there while staying in NZ. It was all very easy to book in one package with one phonecall and for a reasonable price, too. Two thumbs up for Joe and his team!
Joe, Ben, Hamish & Libby all did a great job in making our short trip fun and nothing was a problem. We all really had a great time and really appreciated the hospitality. Thanks again.
I would highly recommend the trip , it is a special part of NZ
Peter & Megan
The Bridge to Nowhere lodge could possibly be one of New Zealand's best kept secrets and yet was one of our most enjoyable adventures (among many) during our recent trip to New Zealand.
The location is out of the way and that just adds all the more charm to the adventure. The trip by jet boat is great fun. The walk to the bridge itself is beautiful. Then to end the day, a stay at the lodge itself. The lodge is in a beautiful setting which allows you to look up and down the river valley. The rooms are extremely comfortable and attractive. The common living area and deck are comfortable and conducive to sitting and chatting with other visitors.
The home cooked food was terrific and the quantity was way more than anyone could eat. All of this, in a rustic setting, was all the more amazing when you consider that everything is brought in by boat.
Joe, you were a great host and Ben does a wonderful job in the jet boat and trip to the bridge. The rest of the crew looked after us wonderfully too. The wildlife menagerie of birds and other 4 legged friends were fun to see.
We had a great visit and when we are back to New Zealand again we will go back to the lodge. All the best to you and just keep doing what you are doing as you have a great thing going.
Gary and Karen Brown
What a lovely day and experience myself and partner had. The sun was shinning and river was just amazing. We had a great time with our guide Ben who was really informative and helpful. The lodge down on the Whanganui River looked great it was a pitty we were only there for the day and not able to take advantage of the lodge for a night. We did have a great kayak journey back down the river. Loved the 360's on the jet boat!!!!
Thanks for a great day guys. :-)
Do you have any idea who it feels to get rescued? Was sitting for a long time on a trunk inside the Whanganui River with a man, because we capsized our canoe and the current was to hard to leave the trunk and then Joe, from the "Bridge to Nowhere" came around the corner with his JetBoat and his sweet dog. This was a big X-Mas present. And the best, Joe brought us to the Bridge Track, that we could have the whole adventure from the River Journey. Thanks a lot. It was just awesome. You should have seen us sitting there.....
Amazing views over the river, great place to relax after 2 days of canoeing....you can count on Joe for reliable advice on the current state of the river and rapids. Very friendly and welcoming.
Excellant, very nice and clean accommodation. The view is magic, the people are so friendly. highly recommended. Will go back soon
When visiting the Wanganui region, make sure to allow a day to enjoy this amazing must do. It was a day to remember and highly recommended. Joe, Mandy and Ben are excellent hosts and the lodge is an unexpected surprise.
OMG Joe you were my saviour on this day. We had just had two days of rafting down the river and such a novice we were we over shot just about every turn to get to any camp, so when we were stranded on Joes side of the river was a blessing in disguise. We called Joe 'Santa'! He went out of his way to take us back up to the walking track to the bridge to nowhere as we missed it a few hours up the river and then picked us back up.
Joe and Mandy you have an awesome facility with beautiful views and a real welcoming atmosphere - you made us feel like one of the family. The girls and I hope to come back in the near future and grace you with our prescence.
P.S I hope you got to enjoy the venison we saw on the way!
An amazing place to stay to get away from it all. Stunning views over the river with true kiwi hospitality from Joe and family. We will definitely be back for more of this slice of paradise.
To Everyone at Bridge to Nowhere Lodge, a huge THANK YOU!
An amazing location, with great accommodation, facilities and fantastic food.
We loved the views, the relaxed friendly atmosphere… everything we could have wanted. We canoed from Whakahoro then took the jet boat back to Pipiriki.
Joe’s knowledge of the area and expertise on the river was exceptional as are his Jet boat driving skills!!
Our group (16 of us) were all impressed and hope to make a return visit soon.
This was a very informative and enjoyable tour. One of the best of our 4 week trip though New Zealand.
Everyone should do themselves a favour and experience the warm and generous hospitality extended by Joe and his family at the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge. The family members are extremely welcoming hosts for whom nothing seems too much trouble. We were all made to feel very at home with the magnificent views from our comfortable rooms, delicious meals and the host family's quirky NZ humour.
Our evening at the Lodge was the highlight of our canoeing trip. Joe is a gifted story teller and quite the comic. My family could not recommend a stay with Joe more highly. This is one of those experiences that we won't ever forget.
As a frequent visitor to New Zealand I now seek out those special places that have both historic and cultural significance as well as the unique beauty that only New Zealand offers. I found a true gem this time. Whanganui National Park and river is truly amazing. The history of the early settlers, the riverboat traffic, the bridge to nowhere and the challenges they faced was brought to life by Joe in a friendly, humorous and very descriptive way. The 1/2 day tour from Pipiriki with Bridge to Nowhere is a must for anyone wanting a great Kiwi experience. I will be back to canoe, visit the lodge and spend more time with the great folks on this river!
A very helpful couple of jokers!!!
We were on a tour with another company, and spilt out of our kayak (due to our own lack of concentration more than anything else).
Our boat was floating down stream with all of our stuff on board, and these guys came to our rescue!!! My mrs was stoked, as was I.
I would strongly recommend this kiwi business that uphold true integrity in what they do.
Thanks guys. Bloody awesome.
It was a really nice day on the river. We did the half day trip with Jet boat to Bridge to Nowhere and after an amazing story about the bridge we went with kayaks down the river and it was a very nice combination to both have the speed and exitement of the Jetboat and the peace and tranquillity of the kayaking. It is a must do if you want to experience the river in a short time!
Bridge to Nowhere Lodge are AMAZING! Not only do they provide a fantastic service of tours to the Bridge to Nowhere but they also are a great place to stay right in the heart of the beautiful Whanganui River. Most of all Joe and Ben are always there to help you out of any tight situation you find yourself in on the river.
Couldn't have done it without you guys
"Bridge to Nowhere" with Joe is one of our best trips in NZ. It was a great day with lot´s of adventure and good experience. If I come back to NZ you will be wet Joe!!!
Joe made his hobby to his profession and his guests feel that he is happy and proud to present his fantastic landscape. If you do this trip you will have definetly a awesome day.
The best were the spins they made lot´s of fun... :)
Isabella and Papa
We had a great journey with anz nature tours during new zealand and we saw a lot of lovely places, but bridge to nowhere lodge was the one for us which was amazing. There is also the fact that we never saw a scenery like these!!! Next morning we had a geat walk to bridge to nowhere and got lunch there, Joe had to carry all stuff!!! Thanks a
Joe, you are a very lucky man remenber the dollar and we were pleased to meet you.
After our journey we had to judge all location, yours was amazing and got a very good from us. We would be greatly to stay more then 1 night at your house but our guide pushed us to the next lodge so we had to go. If we ever be in New Zealand again, we will for shure stay at your lodge again!!!
Thanks again for all and have a nice summer!
Gabi and Stefan
This is a must do experience, even if you haven't kayaked before. You kiwis are so laid back and make every experience fun, so any worries you have just disappear. The scenery is fantastic and Ben made the jet boat up the river an informative and comical experience. It was a great way to see such beautiful scenery and great fun going through rapids. I can't wait to come back next year and do it again.
I recently went on the Bridge to nowhere experience, with a friend, and it was really great.. The trip up the river was fantastic with so much to see and then the walk up to the bridge was a bit of a challenge for me because I have a fear of heights, but I did it and am happy that I faced the challenge. My friend and I stayed the night at the lodge and the hospitality was second to none,a walk around the grounds showed us that there is no lack of animal life. I would recommend this experience to everyone as a must do on your bucket list,
First time on the Whanganui River on a Guided Canoe trip with Yeti Tours. Wow, what can I say. An amazing experience, incredible guide, beautiful scenery, amazing walk to the bridge to nowhere and then the rain came down. Met Joe from the Lodge on the river and to discribe him as a 'character' would be mild. A generous, hospitable host whose accomodation and family were delightful. Not sure about the possum! I highly recommend the 'Bridge to Nowhere Lodge'
What a fantastic adventure we had on this day. Booked for a jet boat tour to the bridge to nowhere and took the option of the kayak return back to start point.
First we did the jet boat ride to the bridge and then we had this amazing bush walk. After we had lunch at the bridge to nowhere, we kayak back.
Having not done very much kayaking before, was a little worried at first. Joe was great, he spent a good amount of time making sure my partner and i were safe and new that we were fine before he let us go.
The whole adventure took us 6 hours, and was one of our best days ever.
Joe, you are a very lucky man to be where you are and we were pleased to meet you.
FANTASTIC, AWSOME, GREAT, Went for a jet boat ride to the "bridge of nowhere" with this guy Joe. He owns the company. This was the high light of our tour to New Zealand. Joe with his familey own and operate bridge of nowhere tours in the Whanganui National Park. My wife and i went for a 6 hour jet boat and canoe tour and ended up staying there for 2 days. We loved it so much we canceled our other activities to stay here longer.
The scenary and the river is amazing and the care and attention that Joe gave to us was second to none. This guy loves and is real passionate about what he does. We stayed at there lodge which we were only able to get to buy his jet boat. Joes drive way to the lodge is 20 klm of some of the most stunning scenary in New Zealand. This activity is 100% recomended. We will be back with our freinds.
It was a perfect Trip! We took a jet boat tour to the bridge and spend a night at the lodge.
Great People, Great Location and a very nice dinner!
The only downturn was, that we could not go canoeing because of the high water.
A good reason to come back one day !
We went by Jetboat to the Bridge to Nowhere, then stayed a night at the Lodge, before returning by jetboat to Pipiriki. The whole trip was wonderful. Scenery was spectacular, Joe and the other hosts were friendly, helpful and welcoming. The accommodation was comfortable and relaxing, and the food was excellent. The whole trip was a little pricey, and had we been younger, it would have been better to return by canoe, and our fellow guests did. Agreat trip.
It was an amazing trip. Great scenery and Joe is really helpful. We stayed at the campground but went to the lodge for a drink. It's worth it just for the view. Highly recommended and ready to go back for another trip :)
I've taken a group of 10 up to the Whanganui River 2 years in a row. Both years Joe took great care of us, catering the trip specifically to us. Before going the first time I called a variety of companies in the area and Joe at Bridge to Nowhere was the most helpful. The lodge and campsite are both amazing and being on the river is a great experience. I hope to do the trip again someday and would certainly recommend this trip to anyone who loves canoeing, great scenery, and great company!
We had an excellent time canoeing… with some naps on the way :-)
Awesome views of the river!
The coffee/tea with cookies and great histories on the middle of nowhere (the bridge) was amazing.
Joe is a great host. Good having a beer at his lodge next to the camp site.
Hope to do it again next year!
This trip was a great weekend away. Joe was a great host both times. (My second year) Enjoyed every moment of the trip. My favorite was the coffee and chocolate biscuits at the bridge to no where lunch. Joe makes great coffee. He tells great stories. The view is amazing absolutely stunning. Worth checking it out. The lodge is a great romantic time away. :) and camping is a great door adventure. Gotta love it. :)
This year has been my second year doing the Bridge to Nowhere. Had such a great time, last year I stayed at the lodge I found the view definitely breath taking. There are no words to describe. Only great memories and great time. This year i tried out the camping side of things which was also one of the best experience ever. Joe from Bridge to Nowhere was fantastic at looking after us. He made the trip worth while. Could always laugh at his jokes. :) Excellent service and very welcoming and friendly. Great outdoor adventure to spend the weekend. Absolutely stunning views. Worth seeing. I could go on about this place,,,,loved it.
Awesome experience and fantastic and friendly host! The lodge was comfy with great views couple with exotic animals!
A wonderful 80th birthday trip up river to THE bridge. Joe just marvellous - patient and kind. A great experience. What a great cook Joe is. We just loved his meals and hospitality. Thank you Joe, Dot and Pete Hamilton
What a fantastic experience!
Thumbs up to Ben, Joe and Family for their super friendly hospitality. The jet boating ride/tour was awesome and very informative. The lodge was located in a remote area and was surrounded by breathe taking views, which we got to enjoy over a delicious kiwi tucker.
A touch of paradise- thanks heaps guys!
What a great family buisness you are running a wealth of knowledge you have on the river with so many choices of activities and the lodge must be one of the most remote places in NZ the meals were amazing and the beer
was great just what you need after a long day on the River Cheers Guys.
Did this tour sept 16th 2009. fantastic day, Ben was a great guide.Tour was combined with "The Wanganui Mail Run" (see Wanganu Tours) www.wanganuitours.co.nz. Both companies gave excellent service.
Fabulous day, will recommend them to everyone I know.
They were the most helpful tour company on the River. Well done
This is a day long trip with a jet boat ride up the Whanganui river. A hike to the bridge and a kayak back down. Fantastic day. Recommended if you have just 1 day prepared.
Thank you Joe and Ben for a lovely day. Your lodge up the hill is great and the evening atmosphere unforgetable. Thanks for telling us your story. We will spread it through the world as we travel.
Great work and great to visit the Bridge-to-nowhere and the Top 10 Holiday Park
The best 4 1/2 hours we had.
Hard to get to their base - it's a really crap gravel road - but scenery is worth it. Fun jet boat ride. Bridge to Nowhere itself was strangely crowded.
Bridge to Nowhere Tours responds:
Hi Holly, yes i agree, the road was real crap as you stated. The good news is the road should be sealed by summer. The other good news is that we have bought the Raetihi Holiday Park and have shifted our base to there.
