We hired a camper van on a short notice Hamish did his upmost to arrange a suitable camper for us. We had a great time everything went well and had no problems at all. We had a booklet with all the technical information and although I thought it was a lot of fuss with a camper it turned out very easy. I would definitely recommend NZ. Hamish is a hardworking, honest and easy going guy with great campers.
Honest, hospitable and reliable family business. Hamish and his wife gave us a warm welcome the first night we stayed at their bnb. Then for the next 30 days we discovered the South Island in one of their 4-berth motor homes. If you rent a motor home for this long, chances are you are going to have some smaller or bigger issues at one point or the other. Hamish was always ready to help whenever we needed him. We freedom camped about 80 % of the nights which was great with the solar panel that was powerful enough to charge our phones and laptops autonomously. We also liked that our camper was not branded like all of the big companies do so that we were not immediately identified as tourists everywhere we went.
Travel NZ Motorhomes was the best motorhome rental service I've used so far. I was picked up from the airport and shown everything I needed to know for my trip. Returning the motorhome was simple and quick. And I was dropped off at the airport with plenty of time. I want to thank Hamish and the team for making my trip to Nelson such a great experience. I recommend this business and I will definitely use them again in the future. A+
Excellent communication and customer service from the initial enquiry to the completion of our holiday hire. Nelson is a fantastic start and end point.
We have had quite a few motor home holidays around NZ over the years and our holiday booked through Travel NZ Motorhomes ranks very high.
Highly recommend booking with Travel NZ Motorhomes and definitely rent the BBQ & outdoor table/chairs we used ours daily.
Many thanks to Hamish.
Despite frequent reminders from my wife I, apparently, "left it a bit late" to book a camper. After a lot of toing and froing with the larger companies I ended up having an email conversation with Hamish. He was able to go out on a limb and find a van for us. We arrived in New Zealand and stayed in Wellington for a couple of days before flying to Nelson to pick up the van. Hamish met us at the airport and we picked up the van from Travel NZ yard. Sadly, February 2019 saw wildfires in the Nelson area and closed highways meant we had to change our original itinerary. Hamish helped us redraw our plans and we set off on a memorable three week tour. We had a couple of issues with the van but Hamish was able to sort these out quickly and we were on our way again. Hamish is a can do kind of guy who is helpful and friendly. We dropped the van back and were then taken to the bus station for our ride back to Picton and the inter islander ferry. I am sitting here back in London with some fantastic memories. wouldn't hesitate to recommend NZ Motorhomes to any one who is planning a trip of a lifetime.
We had a 4-berth Campervan which was in a good condition, great space and well equipped! The communication was very prompt and professional. Hamish gave us all the information we needed. An exceptional customer service. Thank you very much!
From December 13-28,2019 my husband & I travelled around the South Island in a Travel NZ 2 Berth Motorhome (Mercedes Sprinter). We were very pleased with the campervan. It was well-maintained & in excellent condition, easy to handle on the narrow winding highways & roads in a variety of weather conditions (mostly cool, rainy & wet). This self-contained campervan was easy to handle, park & operate.. We found it quite comfortable to sleep, cook & travel in, very thoughtfully designed. Communication with Hamish was excellent. He explained everything up front & was available for several phone calls in which we clarified a couple of operational questions. I would recommend Travel NZ Motorhomes readily & found the Mercedes Sprinter 2 Berth Motorhome perfect for a retired couple who are prepared to live simply for a couple of weeks on the road. We also appreciated the variety & wealth of information shared via the Rankers phone app.
We rented a 6 berth motorhome to tour around the South Island and what a great experience it was. Hamish at NZ Motorhomes could not have been more helpful and the location we picked up from in Nelson was really convenient for the airport. Whilst the motorhome was not the newest around, it was perfect for our requirements, very well equipped and gave us no problems. We found Hamish's pragmatic, unfussy approach really refreshing and would thoroughly recommend hiring from him. We all fell in love with NZ and will definitely be returning in the future.

We cannot recommend Travel NZ Motorhomes enough. We got an amazing deal, when other rental companies could not accommodate our (short period) dates. The company was super easy to find in Nelson. Overall, communication was fast, clear and smooth. Hamish accommodated our timetable, which was much appreciated. As inexperienced campers, Hamish patiently explained all the ins and outs and took his time to talk us through all we needed to know. The motorhome was spacious, with all amenities required and very comfy beds. We thoroughly loved our experience! Book it!
We discovered TravelNZmotorhomes on recommendation from another small company, when having trouble finding a vehicle for the dates we had planned. This is a small, family run outfit that provides first class, personal service. From our initial enquiry right through to the final correspondence after our trip, Hamish went out of his way to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride. Although based in Nelson on S. Island, he was very happy to deliver our campervan to Auckland and pick up from Christchurch as well as arranging the ferry from Wellington to Picton (at a very good price!) and providing a number of items within a complementary bundle - that other providers usually charge extra for. We had problems with the Hook Up cable one day after some particularly wet weather and Hamish organised delivery of a replacement to our next stop within 24 hours – no mean feat given the layout of S. Island! We covered 3600 Km over 25 days and had no other problems at all with our 2-berth VW. Altogether a very friendly and professional service that I would highly recommend to anyone planning a road trip around NZ. Pete & Annie Welply
We received several offers for a motorhome rental when we sent a query thru Rankers (for the last three weeks of the year 2018). Travel NZ Motorhomes immediately stood out because we could actually understand the very clear offer (for the first-timers from overseas, renting a motorhome was not immediately familiar), it was reasonable, and felt also very personal. We were very happy that we chose them, as the same first impression continued in reality throughout. Hamish gave us excellent advise before, during and even after, and it all worked towards 100% great experience. The motorhome (VW) was perfect for two adults, and we definitely now consider renting again some time. We warmly recommend Travel NZ Motorhomes.
My husband and I hired a 4 berth Mercedes self contained camper for our 12 day round trip from Nelson. I searched the internet for a Nelson based firm and found Travel NZ or Road Abode as it was called then. Hamish was very helpful and friendly all the way through our booking process and on our arrival and departure from Nelson. Our camper was very comfortable even on the cold wet nights and days. We had hot running water for the entire 12 days. Thank you Hamish and I would recommend your firm to anyone and have done so. All the best.
I started planning my trip to New Zealand in Feb 2018, I contacted Travel NZ (formerly called Road Abode) by e-mail. I got a prompt reply from Hamish and once I had outlined what I was looking for everything was sorted.
On arrival in Nelson Hamish brought me through the features of the 2 berth campervan. it was very modern, exceptionally clean and well equipped with all the agreed items.
The van was great to drive although it took a few minutes for me to get used to an automatic!
Hamish was just great with any questions I had, a pleasure to deal with. Collection and drop off were all done on time and with ease. I spent just over two weeks on the South Island based in Nelson and taking trips to some of the most spectacular places.
If I'm ever visiting again I will contact Travel NZ without any hesitation.
Save up to 70% on campsite fees! Support conservation and experience the natural beauty of NZ. 75 Department of Conservation campsites, one convenient pass.
Hamish was so good to deal with and all the arrangements went 100% to plan. The Motor Home was very comfortable and went without any hitches.
A great way to see New Zealand and hope to do another trip the same way. Thanks Abode Motor Homes!
Roadabode provided us with a fantastic motor home for our week long trip.
Hamish gave us fantastic customer service, airport pickup and drop off, excellent explanation of the camper functions before we hit the road.
We had a great time, and wouldn't hesitate to hire from roadabode for our next trip.
John and Jan Loxley
We hired a motorhome for 8 days from the 3rd April having had difficulty finding any suitable options because it was out of season and we were able to secure a 6 berth for three of us and we drove via Blenheim to Kaikoura to kayak and whale watch before setting off across to Hanmer Springs for a day relaxing in beautiful sunshine before venturing across the Lewis Pass to Reefton and then Pancake rocks on the west coat. We then headed north staying over night on route before staying two nights at Abel Tasman National Park taking two boat trips up the coast and hiking along the coastal paths amongst terrific scenery, beaches, bays and bush before returning to Nelson. Hamish was really helpful prior to and after our trip particularly in catering for our tight timetable and recommended stopovers and our sat nav was invaluable. It was helpful to know that we could contact him at any time. The bedding was great as was the internal equipment. We were kindly dropped off at the Bus Station to catch our inter city bus to Picton. Up until then we had glorious weather and it was joy to travel on uncongested roads. The van was straightforward to drive despite being 7.5 metres long. Great experience.
We had a great week around Golden Bay with our young family and were very well looked after by the staff at Road Abode. The campervan exceeded our expectations, was very comfortable, well equipped, well maintained and a great experience all round! We would recommend Road Abode highly.
Keith and Jan
We hired a Fiat from Hamish and did a 10 day tour from Nelson dropping off in Queenstown. We had an issue with the vehicle - entirely of our making! - but Hamish was completely unphased, sorted it out and had us back on the road in a few hours. He was a delight to deal with - friendly and communicative. It is so much easier dealing with a small independent Company than through a customer service team. I would highly recommend Road Abode. It made our NZ experience all the better.
Hamish and Rode Abode were a delight to deal with. We booked last minute for a tour of the South Island whilst in New Zealand for our son’s wedding in February. The van was very well equipped drove well. We had an issue with the house battery which Hamish dealt with speedily and efficiently. We even survived Cyclone Gita. I would have no hesitation in using Rode Abode again or in recommending them.
We did a trip to the South Island for 10 days in August 2017, and we highly recommend the company Road Abode.
They had all what we could expect and all what we needed:
- Communication: Excellent Communication from the beginning (quotes), during our trip and to the end, after our holidays.
- Customer service: Excellent response. Always available to help us
- Campervan: In very good condition, very comfortable to drive
We hired a motorhome from Road Abode for three weeks in February 2018, from our first enquiry Hamish could not have been more helpful and accommodating. The pick up and drop off went extremely smoothly, the motorhome was spotlessly clean and the bikes we also hired were brand new and a very good spec. We had a brilliant trip around New Zealand.
We had a great experience with the Road Abode motorhome. Away for a week, we went to stay at Totaranui Campground, Wharariki Beach Campground and The Barn Campground in Maharau. My kids (age 4 and 6) loved the whole trip especially sleeping above the driver's cabin and getting to bed very late...
For me it was the first time to drive such a big motorhome, but it was not a problem and even easier than expected. We had a great personal support from Hamish and he gave us some useful information before the trip and a good introduction on the spot. Pick-up and dropp-off were very easy and the quality of your Mercedes 4 berth motorhome very good.
Thanks again to Hamish!
Had a fantastic experience with the company. My brother and I rented a VW Volkswagen LT35 for around 16 days to tour the NZ South Island. We had the absolute best trip ever, particularly thanks to our awesome self contained motorhome, affectionately know as Moby the great white whale. It was a little tricky to manoeuvre to begin with with neither of us ever having driven a camper of that size before but Hamish at Road Abode was incredible patient and helpful. A few other situations arose with us not being familiar with filling it up with water etc, but Hamish continued to be super accommodating, even taking our calls on Christmas Day (sorry Hamish!) They also allowed us a slightly delayed return of the vehicle which actually saved us a heap of costs sorting accommodation at the last minute. Overall, if you're looking for a no frills campervan experience, great, personalised service with some good people, then Road Abode is perfect for you. Highly recommended!
The motor home was very clean when we picked it up.
A+ service! We rented a Fiat 4 berth self-contained motorhome for a week in December 2017. Had an awesome, relaxing time on the Nelson/Golden Bay coastline with great weather and no crowds. Great value to hire from a Nelson company rather than pay the relocation costs charged by many large national ones. Hamish and his team were always very helpful and communicative: online during booking; at the start of the hire - when Hamish picked us up from our motel and gave us a thorough briefing on everything in the van, which we appreciated as first-time campers. And at the end of the week, Ken accommodated our flight time, even dropping us at the airport. They went 'above and beyond' and couldn't have been more helpful. The location of the yard is convenient to Nelson Airport. The van was in great condition and well-equipped. As a couple, we had the luxury of leaving the van set up all the time, with the seating and table in place - and the full-time bed above the cabin was more spacious and comfortable than we expected, too. Thank you for a great experience.
The camper provided had a severe dust problem, the company did nothing satisfactory to fix the problem, would not consider using this company again.
Travel NZ Motorhomes responds:
Hi John, Very sad to see your remark. If you had called with this issue when it happened I could of told you to close vents and windows. Unfortunately this is a lesson to all about driving on unsealed roads. I must add that I did get this Motorhome checked by the manufactures after this complaint and it came back A+. The people that hired this before and after haven't had a issue ether. I'm also very sad that your holiday and experience with traveling in NZ wasn't a happy one. Hope you travels in the future go better for you.

A+ service and an absolute "10" of an experience. We rented a Sprinter-van RV from Hamish at Road Abode for a tour of the South Island. Started in Nelson & went up to Abel Tasman, down the west coast, through Wanaka, Queenstown, Te Anau and out to Milford Sound. Then up to Mt. Cook, over to Tekapo, down to Dunedin & ended our trip in Christchurch. Hamish was very thorough in describing the details of the van & we used it to its fullest (even freedom camped). Cooked many delicious meals, had numerous card games and it was amazing to walk up and have a cold drink out of the fridge after a long trek! We had zero mechanical issues as the RV ran like a top! The entire trip was comfortable and gorgeous! Hat's off to Hamish and his crew at Road Abode! We would do it again in a heartbeat!
Rented / hired and utilized every centimeter of a 6 person Mercedes motorhome. It drove great for its size and everything was in perfect condition. Kitchen and linnens etc. well stocked. THE BEST run through I can imagine at pickup. It was like a free education and presented in a way so everything stuck. At the same time it's a very chill company so I'm sure you could say "ok ok I've got it" if you are in a rush. I'm a nut about safety so we tested several child seats. Overall received over an hour of hands on help. Got picked up at the Nelson airport in the actual motorhome too. The owner is basically a world record road traveler, camper and vehicle expert so renting from him is like borrowing a surfboard from Kelly Slater. Verry reassuring and a turbo boost start for our adventure. I bet you can not find a company more legitimate than Road Abode.
We have booked a Road Abode motorhome for one month in March 2017.
Shane and Hamish were very helpful and answered quickly our questions when we were preparing our trip from France. We had initially booked a 2-berth campervan, and Road Abode kindly upgraded our rental to a 4-berth motorhome, which turned out to be very pleasant !
No problem at all regarding the pick-up and drop-off times, many thanks to Hamish for his availability (even on Sunday) and for his advice on how to use the motorhome.
The vehicle was fully equipped, with two sets of household linens and bath sheets. The interior was clean but not spotless.
The motorhome had more than 150000 km on its kilometer reader, but no issue at all with the driving around South Island.
We would definitively recommend Road Abode for a campervan rental !
The campervan we rented was very old, but it has everything we needed. Two days before our trip ended it stopped working. From Abode Motorhomes recomended us to give back the campervan as soon as possible. So we did it and we rent a car for the rest of our trip.
They ensure us to refund the amount of 3 days. I've been asking for that refund from March 2016, but it never arrived. Now they told me they can't refund anything. So, don't believe what Abode Motorhomes says!!
Choose another company for better experiences!!
Travel NZ Motorhomes responds:
As the new owner I tried to sort this issue out but Eva wanted nothing than to put her comment here. Saying it was nothing to do with me but with Road Abode?? Very sad this couldn't be resolved. All our motorhomes have now been upgraded and hope we don't get a comment like this again.
The van we rented had multiple problems that cost us a lot of valuable vacation time to rectify.
Travel NZ Motorhomes responds:
This is a very disappointing review as we tried our very best to satisfy this customer.
PLEASE SCROLL DOWN the page to read reviews that more accurately reflect our service levels.
My family hired a campervan from Road Abode for 12 days before the Christmas 2015 Shane was extremely prompt and reliable in answering any questions. The whole process was very smooth.
Shane friend dropped off the van to Picton were we got of from the Ferry with no problems and provided a detailed explanation. We drove the van around the South Island without any problems.
I would recommend Road Abode to anyone. Hope to come back again.
My boyfriend and I hired a campervan from Road Abode for 12 days over the Christmas/NY period 2015/16. The experience was simply amazing. Whilst trying to organise the trip from the UK, Shane was extremely prompt and reliable in answering any queries and finalising the booking via email. The whole process was very smooth and reassuring. The great added benefit was these vans are they're available directly from Nelson, so you don't incur the added relocation charges from some of the big brand companies, who were ridiculously expensive.
Shane dropped off the van to our requested address with no problems and provided a detailed explanation of all of the facilities and amenities and we knew that if any problems occurred we could get in touch at any time for some help. Luckily this was not required! The van was brilliant in every way. We had no problems with it at all, it drove well for the whole loop of the South Island and was a great place to set up camp in some off the track spots.
The van came with everything we could possibly need and was so comfortable, we're already talking about our next trip!
In short, I would recommend Road Abode to anyone, the service and product was second to none at a very reasonable price.
We came to NZ for 19 weeks and hired a 6m Ducato van conversion with twin couches at the rear. It was a 2007 model with about 180K on the clock. Despite this it was in good condition and drove very well. Being tall and with a recent back injury, Shane was very careful in supplying a van to meet my needs. One couch was 2m long the other 1.95m long, also no bulkhead behind the driver's seat so I was able to adjust the tilt of the seat to suit. It had a four burner stove, a small grill, a microwave and a BBQ hot plate and a fridge. It was fully self contained and as we joined the NZMCA there were many locations to freedom camp. The solar cell on the roof meant we could avoid commercial sites for days on end saving lots of $$$ and enjoying the best locations too! There was plenty of overhead locker space and a half height wardrobe. Initially we wondered how we would cope in a relatively small vehicle, but after a while we were really pleased not to have hired something too large! During the researching period before booking, Shane responded promptly and patiently to all our questions. Nothing was too much trouble for him. During our trip he was very attentive to any problems or queries we had. Shane met us at Christchurch on arrival and he was there to see us depart. Over the 19 weeks we travelled 15000km throughout North and South Island and thanks to Shane and his team at Road Abode we had a great time. Many Thanks!
We rented a 6 berth Fiat Motorhome and it was exactly what we were after and needed. It was clean, new cutlery and clean sheets etc. Shane was very helpful and made sure we needed everything before we left and was able to assist at late notice with Airport pick-ups and drop-offs. The TV never worked no matter where we were (not that we wanted to watch any) and the LPG tank emptied after only 2 days and we were pitched far away from town, but these were small things and didn't spoil our great adventure. Shanes new depot is right next to the airport - almost walking distance in Nelson so very handy. I would thoroughly recommend this company to anyone and were very happy with the daily rates and Shanes assistance.
Road Abode 2 berth camper van was perfect for my trip. Shane delivered the van to the requested address on time, the van was spotless. I had the van for almost 3 weeks and it was great, everything was in good order, I would use Road Abode again if I ever make it back to New Zealand.
Arrangements all made by email but company called to confirm. Very helpful and efficient. Campervan is perfectly adequate, showing its age/usage but does the job.
We travelled with a campervan of this company for about four weeks. We got a 6-berth campervan for two adults and two children.
Shane was really friendly. The campervan was a little bit older, but we did not notice that. It was tidy and well equipped and we had enough space with our two children. Because of some accident with other drivers we got another campervan for the first week and had to change it. Because of this small inconvenience Shane decided not to charge petrol costs.
We had a wonderful trip and would not hesitate to hire a campervan at Road Abode the next time.
Four siblings aged between 65 and 82 from around the world decided to get together for the first time in 42 years, and go on a road trip in NZ. I came along as daughter/neice and gofer. Luckily we chose Road Abode.
Shane was an absolute pleasure to work with. He contributed to the planning, going over our route map and offering suggestions. He was flexible and accommodating as pick up/drop off places and dates shifted. He supplied such niceties as a selection of pillows, bedding types, additional outdoor seating, BBQ, etc etc etc. His suggestion of a 4-berth and a 6-berth to house the 5 of us for the 12 day trip was the perfect configuration for 4 +1 stroppy oldies.
He and Trevor met us in Christchurch and showed us the ropes, answered all our questions and left us with phone numbers, maps, and a detailed Wiki showing all the ins and outs of operating the camper vans.
And off we went. Over 1900 Kms across the top of the South Island, down the west coast and inland to Wanaka. We got hammered by rain, cold, flooding, and massive winds (hello Cyclone Ita and the Greymouth/Haast road). The vans never lost a beat, we had a ball and we all fell in love with NZ.
So thank you Shane. Your thoughtfulness and professionalism were significant factors in the success of our trip. And better brace yourself, because everyone is talking about returning for Sibling Tour II...
The camper hire we had with Shane was great. He was prompt in replying to all our inquiries and really put me at ease in driving the motorhome. We had a small issue during our hire which was taken care of by Shane and I would not hesitate to recommend his services to anyone!
Wonderful 15 days in the south of NZ. My girlfriend an I had a 6th berth motorhome from Road Abode.
The booking, pick up and drop off was no problem.
The motorhome was well equipped and the driving of the motorhome was great! (after I got used to this big vehicle ;-).
All questions prior were anwered by Shane.
We had 8 days away in the camper van. The van was very well equipped, clean and very spacious for the both of us. The booking was very easy to do and pick up and drop off also easy. We asked many questions and Shane answered them all. We are definitely going to save up and use Abode Motor Homes again. We truly enjoyed the experience. Thank you Shane...... :)
Brilliant 10 days away in a Road Abode campervan. Excellent service - really easy to book, great explanation of how everything in the van worked upon delivery. Beds quick and simple to put up at night and away in the morning. Really did have everything you needed, right down to the small little things in the kitchen. Highly recommend.
We are a swedish family that hired a 6 berth mobile home for 22 days in december. The vehicle worked perfectly during all the 3800km that we droved around the south island. We were six adult that had to take care of each other because it was very little space for us all.
The pick up and returning of the vehicle went very smoothly because Shane delivered the car to our accomodation. I can highly recommend Shane to provide a mobile home to everyone.
My family rented our first motorhome ever from Road Adobe and had a great time. We were 6 adults in a campervan and although it felt "cozy" we were pretty comfortable for 12 days. The motorhome was an older model but in very good shape and clean.
The pick-up and drop-off went smoothly and was hassle free. Shane was really helpful in answering our questions prior and during the trip.
Thank you for a great vacation!
We used Roadabode 2 years ago and had great experience. We hired the Toyota Coaster again. It's a fantastic motorhome, plenty of room with lots of storage space and very easy to drive. Shane was most helpful and is always on the end of the phone if you need any help or advice. We can highly recommend this company for its personal touch rather than a larger organisation.
We would definitely use this company again.
Friendly service and easy to deal with. Campervan was clean, reliable and modern and we had a great holiday. Would certainly recommend Shane and the team.
We had a wonderful holiday in the Camper van.
Problem free with great friendly service from Shane at Road Abode. Would use Road Abode again for our next Camper van holiday.
Shane helped solve a complicated one way rental requirement at short notice. He was attentive to phone calls and always excelled. He had great tips including a good smart phone App to make it an unforgettable holiday The VW LT 46 5 berth had obviously been well maintained, drove like new was excellently equipped.
We picked up a Road Abode 4 berth motorhome in Nelson for our recent trip around the South Island; Shane was great at talking us through the ropes and then sent us on our merry way. The van ran like a dream and was perfect for us during our 10 days South. We called the office a few times
to ask some minor questions which were all easily resolved! All in all a great time, competitive price and the van was very well presented, clean and
tidy and equipped with everything that we needed, thanks for everything. A&J.
We hired a motor home from Shane at Road Abode in Nelson. We were really impressed with the low cost and value for money. The motor home was beautifully equipped, clean and user friendly, Shane couldn't do enough to help. We have hired motor homes before from larger companies and haven't got as good service. Top marks Road Abode Ltd.
Road Abode provides a pretty good way of hiring a campervan at a good price and with very good support. We'd set ourselves the task of finding a company with better reviews than the big players and at a lower price. What seemed to a challenge was quickly achievable, with Road Abode ticking both boxes. If you're happy with a van that's racked up the miles and been reconditioned by a company offering excellent back up on the road, then Road Abode's for you. We wouldn't hesitate in using them again.
Although RA is based on South Island , we picked up the van from Auckland Airport early morning in mid February and were treated to a helpful intro. A month on the road across both North and South Islands was bound to generate a few problems in a seven year old van, but they were minor and very easily resolved with a phone call to Shane who quickly arranged a solution.
We'd not campervanned before and enjoyed the flexibility and comfort immensely. The van had plenty of 'poke' even on steepish hills and, of course, you pack/unpack just the once. Freedom camp by all means. We did so only once - on an Auckland street when we'd enjoyed a convivial evening with friends in a local restaurant. However, there are some great campgrounds in beautiful locations that won't break the bank. Road Abode will get you to them efficiently and with pretty good value.
Excellent experience renting a campervan from this small but professional company. Excellent personable service from Shane. The campervan was very clean and well equipped and very good condition for its age. Also drove very easily and surprisingly economically, about the same cost per km as my Mazda 6, albeit a bit slower.
I personally rate Road Abode very highly and would have no hesitation using them again
We chose this firm mainly because of the location as we wanted to start our journey from Nelson. Really great service from Shane, he was even able to provide a kayak for abel tasman. Brilliant, spacious van (self-contained) which drove well and was very comfortable. Competitive price (drop-off in a different location is always going to be expensive) and no problems encountered so a very good experience in all.
Would definitely recommend to others.
Good van, tidy condition, good price but could have done with a few extras in the kitchen department like a sharp knife and a chopping board. Fridge didn't seem to stay on even when connected to the electricity although it did work when on the road so it didn't really matter - very good customer service as Shane came out to look into it when we were in Kaiteriteri. Overall very pleased with service and value for money. Would have given an 8 or 9 / 10 if the WOF was up to date. Feel a bit guilty really as even though we pointed this out to the man who met us at Nelson airport as being a potential problem he said not to worry and joked about it - he was more concerned that there was no box of matches on board for the cooker (we bought a lighter). On our final day of 10, we got pinged with a $600 fine for no WOF which we gave to Shane - sorry mate, we did say. Would definitely recommend you to others wanting a quality campervan experience with the personal touch at a competitive price though - thanks!
We rented a camper van from Shane for four weeks and it was a very positive experience. We were initially drawn to this company because of its Nelson location and we were glad we rented from them. Shane was great answering our questions, quick to respond and prices were competitive. He offered us a 5 person van for the price of the four person and we appreciated the space. Mechanically it was great and the van was well equipped. We highly recommend this company!! We had a blast.
Marcel and Gerrie Jonkman
The quote for a camper van by Shane from Road Abode was competitive and adjusted to our needs. We received a 4-berth in Christchurch for the costs of a 2-berth. The service was excellent and the equipment complete. The battery was however defect, but Shane managed to have it replaced without affecting our travel plan. Good choice!
We just came back from our first campervan trip through NZ South Island. We had a great time.
We rented a 4-berth van for the 2 of us and had plenty of room. The kitchen was well equipped and everything worked as it should.
Dealing with Shane was great from booking to delivery and return of the van as well as answering our questions.
All in all a great trip.
great people to deal with... friendly and accommodating - would definitely use again. campervan had a few gliches but these were sorted out without drama. had a GREAT holiday!!!
I arrived home in the UK on 10th Jan’13 following a month’s holiday in NZ. I arranged to spend most of my time driving around both islands in a camper van. I’m please that I found Rode Abode on the web; a few simple emails later and thanks to Shane everything was organised. The price was competitive which was important to me. The van was very well equipped, fuel efficient and waiting for me as I arrived in Picton. I would certainly recommend Rode Abode to friends if I return to holiday in NZ again I will be using Rode Abode. Thank you Shane.
Good complete campervan at a reasonable price.
My husband and I just came back from 16 days holiday to NZ, 14 of those around the South Island in a Road Abode campervan.
This is our first campervan experience and we loved it! From quote to delivery to drop off, we have had wonderful and professional services. Shane has been very helpful all along. The upgrade was a lovely surprise too! After a few days in the four berth, I finally accepted that there is no shame to be flash-packing :)
We are planning to visit NZ again and Road Abode will be on the top of our list for the next trip!
Great holiday, will do it again next year, thanks Shane.
Very well taken care of. Shane was most accommodating, picking us up at the airport and meeting us there on the return. The van was well stocked, extras like sleeping bags and table and chairs were included. Instructions were superb, both orally and in writing. The van ran perfectly. Would definitely use again.
We were not given the van we ordered but otherwise all good.
We recently hired a 4 berth campervan from Rode Abode. I appreciated the excellent service and the van was clean, well prepared, and of a good standard. This made for a great family holiday. Thank you.
We booked two motor homes through Road Abode and the whole experince was terrific, from the discount offered for two, the delivery and pick up away from Nelson, and the upgrade, as one of Richard's vehicles suffered mechanical problems. Both motorhomes were spacious, clean and very well appointed. Thanks for contributing to our wonderful NZ holiday
We hired Road Abode's 6 berth camper in the winter to take on a ski trip for 2 weeks. From the begining to the end Richard and Val were very lovely and informative, giving us great advice. The vehicle was comfortable, well equipped and easily driven and we had no problems at all. My family and I had a fantastic trip and will definately be looking to use Road Abode again. Thank you Richard and Val :)
Having researched many campervan companies to hire on the internet we chose Road Abode. The service was fantastic from the first email enquiry right through to returning the campervan at the end of the holiday. All e mails were responded to within hours and all questions answered promptly. The van itself was spotless and we were impressed with the quality and level of all bedding, linen and utensils provided. Richard and Val were extremely helpful and provided no end of information regarding New Zealand, campsites and maps etc. For me the thing which stood out was the friendly professional service given by Richard and Val who went out of their way to accommodate our needs. The total experience exceeded our expectations and I would strongly recommend Road Abode to anyone looking to travel around New Zealand. We will be using them again when we return to see the North Island!
My family and I booked our camper via e-mail from Italy about 6 months before arriving in NZ and during this time both Richard and Val Ash were very helpful in assisting all our requirements with respect to the fitting out of the vehicle to accomodate our family of 5.
Richard was there to meet us at the Picton Ferry, first of all he helped us with our bags and then helped us to become familiar with the 6 berth camper we had hired.
We had a fantastic 10 days travelling around the South Island. The camper was 100% reliable and Richard had made himself totally available to help us out with any queries we may have had regarding the camper.
I would hire another camper from Rode Abode in a flash as the Ash family are a kind and reliable.
Regards Meredith Buxton & Family
We booked everything by email from England. Everything was ready when we arrived to pick up the van. The instructions we got from Richard, the owner, on how to use the van were excellent.
We hired a toyota coaster motorhome for 31 days. It was fantastic. Very easy to drive and equiped with everything you needed. We travelled around the north and south islands, going across on the ferry which was very easy. My wife and I took our 6 foot 25 year old son with us. There was plenty of room for him to sleep at the front of the motorhome. The best thing about the toyota coaster was that it different than all the other white campervans going round New Zealand and had plenty of room.
We booked the ferries in advance but did not need to book any of the campsites as there was plenty of space. We finished travelling on the 13th December. You would probably have to book the campsites if you went later in the year.
We can highly recommend this company. Everything they did was perfect. We also recommend you hire the toyota coaster, it was brilliant.
Hired a 2 person campervan with shower (worked very well) and toilet facilities. Richard met us at the airport and took us to pick up the van. He explained the equipment and how to use it very well - there were no hitches. We had a wonderful few days and at the end of it all Richard took us back to the plane.
Very good value - more affordable than other companies - and prepared to do a short hire which is what we wanted.
Would use this company again.
Thanks to Richard, our South Island campervan holiday was a great experience from start to finish. We will be back one day.
Very friendly and went out of their way to accommodate us. Vehicle was in very good condition and we experienced no problems.
We hired a camper van from Road abode. Everything was great and we really enjoyed our 5 days in Golden Bay. Richard and his team were brilliant and the van was very clean and tidy. He explained all the procedures etc well.
We live in NZ and have family in the south island whom we visit quite often, our main means of accommodation/transportation has been a camper hired from Road Abode. It is fair to say that Richard and Val have always ensured that the vehicle(s) have been fit for purpose, well equipped and the service exemplary delivering the van to Nelson and Christchurch without a hitch.
I/we would have no hesitation in using Road Abode again in 2012, good luck and thanks again guy's. We Hired the Van's in 2010 and 2011.
Hired the Toyota Coaster for a week. Easy to drive-clean and tidy. Good facilities inside made the rest for the week easy. Good value holiday. Easy pick up and delivery.
Will do it again.
The Motor home was hired for a period of 2 weeks, our daughter, son-inlaw and baby used it for 5 nights and my husband and I for the remainder of the time. We all enjoyed our time in the camper. It was clean and comfortable and very easy to drive.
Had a great experience with these guys, will use them again.
We recently hired a Campervan off Road Abode, and having never used a Campervan before found the whole experience one to remember. First of all Richard made it easy for us to choose Road Abode as he was so helpful and made everything so easy to do when choosing a vehicle for our holiday.
The Campervan (Mercedes) we hired was a real pleasure to drive, had plenty of power and was easy to manoeuvre. The Camper had everything we needed from comfortable beds, good heating, shower and toilet which made life very comfortable when travelling around. It was a great way to travel as we could stop at some great spots cook up lunch, enjoy the scenery and move on to the next spot.
The Campervan we had was in very good condition, everything was very clean and tidy and had the comforts of home including a gas oven and fridge to keep the beers warm.
We would most certainly recommend using Road Abode to anyone, in fact we are already planning our next trip with some friends.
We recently rented a Road Abode from Richard and Val Ash in Nelson. The Road Abode campervan we used was fantastic. It was very well maintained and well equipped and fitted 4 people very easily and in comfort. We appreciated the unlimited mileage and the discounts we were given when we booked. We were also very appreciative to Rich and Val for emptying our toilet and waste water after we dropped the van back as we were unable to do it on our last day. Rich and Val were lovely people to deal with and we had such a fantastic time.
Thank you to Rich and Val, we give you 10 out of 10, it was lovely. We all fell in love with our camper van and it was hard to give it back.
Travel NZ Motorhomes responds:
Thanks for your kind comments. We are glad that you all enjoyed your trip so much. Hope to see you again one day.
Richard & Val
We had a 4 berth from Road Abode and had a really great holiday. Richard came to meet us at the airport in Nelson and then met us again in Dunedin. What a great service. He was able to meet us where ever we wanted. The van was nice and clean and had lots of useful things in it. We would definitely hire another camper from Road Abode.
Excellent service and price. We loved the bus - it was very well equipped and great to drive. Perfect for freedom camping. If we do not manage to find a bus to buy, we would certainly hire again. Thank you.
We have had a few campervan holidays over the years mostly with the larger companies. This time we we decided to try a smaller one. Well what a difference. No getting shoved in a room to watch a video of the wrong campervan here. Richard greeted us at the airport at 9 o'clock at night which we though would not be possible, and took us to the Road Abode depot nearby, where he explained everything really well. He gave us loads of travel ideas and tips. He then took us to a great campsite and helped book us in. The holiday was a great experience. Thanks Richard and Val.
Thankyou Richard and Val for helping to make our trip around the south island a dream holiday. From the start Richard and Val were great people to deal with.
The difference with Road Abode is that you are talking to the owners of the company and you get more than you would expect. Richard and Val are really customer focused.
All the emails and website info was spot on. The campervan had everything we needed. The bedding was nice quality with extra blankets as it was a winter trip. The kitchen was really well equipped so cooking was easy.
Richard met us at Picton Ferry with the campervan and showed us everything to do with the camper like a professional teacher. He gave us lots of ideas about where to go and what to see.
Thanks again Road Abode for a great holiday.
Road Abode hire out campervans and from the initial number of enquiries we emailed out, they were the first to respond.
Quick to establish what we wanted, eg 2 berth, as well as clear instructions on how to use the utilities within the van (especially for us 1st time campers) was extremely helpful. Efficient, friendly service. We will definitely use them again.
The van was well presented and performed perfectly. Richard at Road Abode was only too happy to provide information we required and was happy to assist us with any drop off or pick up requests. We have no hesitation in saying they deserve a 9 out of 10 and we would not hesitate in recomending them to any of ours friends. Thankyou Paul & Sandra Telfer Palmerston North
Excellent comunication led to fantastic holiday in a funfilled campervan, would highly recomend this company.
This was our first time using road abode. Its a family run business run by a friendly couple,Richard and Val.We live in Nelson and went to see there fleet of Motorhomes, before deciding on a 4 berth Mercedes.Richard was extremeley helpful and explained everything in detail regarding the Van and the hire. The Van was well kitted out and exceeded our expectations. It was a great first experience, the van performed and drove well,we would recommend using road abode and will certainly be using them again!
Great company, and nice people, they really went out of their way to ensure all went smoothly with our trip.
I highly recommend Road Abode Campervan rentals; they provided us with great value and friendly service 10/10. Sven & Ondene + kids (South Africa)
We recently used a Toyota Coaster motorhome from Roadabode in Nelson for a quick tour around the upper South Island. They were at the Airport to pick us up and after a tour of the motorhome and some adjustments we were on our way. My wife needs to use a wheelchair and so ease of access to all areas of the motorhome was a must. Some seating needed to be changed around and they were helpful with this.
The motorhome was clean and tidy and drove well. There were a few small items missing that were needed and we had to purchase. We have pointed these out to the company.
A very enjoyable trip with good accommodation. Would certainly deal with them again.
Wow! Don't miss your chance to cruize NZ in Roadabode's Toyota Coaster!!!
We did not only like the van ourselves (it is simply a very cool motorhome), but we also got many compliments from other travellers who looked jealously when we entered the campsites.
We furthermore got a great and very friendly introduction from Richard from Roadabode, who patiently expained everything we needed to know before we took off.
If you want something else than a square, white, run-of-the-mill KEA/PacificHorizon/etc campervan, than this is your chance!
Recently we hired a Toyota Coaster Camper van from Road Abode for a trip down to Hokitika. Would I do it again, hell yes.
Firstly Richard from Road Abode is a great guy, he explained the terms and conditions, how to use all the features and how to drive the van really well. Being a first time user he explained it in plain English and in a way I did not feel uncomfortable with.
Secondly the Campervan itself. Yep it’s quite big but that means you have more space on the inside. It’s really easy to drive and very comfortable. It gets along on the open road nicely and the visibility is excellent and easy to park.
My only complaint is why we didn’t do this earlier, it’s a great way to have a holiday and the crew at Road Abode make it so easy.
Thanks guys and look forward to the next time, and hopefully very soon.
I chose this company because it appeared to be a good deal for a 4 berth campervan. I hired this for 3 weeks. I liked the company since it was a family business and had a friendly feel to it. The van itself was fine with no problems, everything was in working order and came equipped with very useful utensils. When I had a problem with power, which ended up being due to a problem with the campsite, the van owners offered very useful friendly advice. I would recommend them to my friends for sure.
Very helpful, friendly people who were willing to go the extra mile. I booked a campervan for some guests, who really enjoyed their holiday with Road Abode. I would definitely recommend them for others.
We rented a campervan from Richard and Val for 5 days in February 2011. They were very pleasant to deal with, both in the booking process and delivery and pickup. Richard delivered our camper to our hotel in Nelson and then came to meet us at the Picton ferry 5 days later - very convenientfor us.
The van itself was very well kept, clean, everything in working order. Unlike some other caravans, campers, and houseboats we've rented, the electrical system performed flawlessly , and there was plenty of hot water very quickly. The systems were easy to deal with, emptying and filling tanks was simle .If there was any complaint, it related to the standard Mercedes diesel, which while very reliable, very fuel-efficient, and gave us no problems, it was a bit of a pig to drive ( especially after driving a Porsche across Canada this past summer !)The van itself was a perfect size for 2 people, and the shower and toilet worked flawlessly as well.
Overall a very positive experience, would recommend Road Abode to anyone.
We hired a 6 birth camper for a week. It was well apointed with maps, utencils plus cutlery and plates we needed for the week on the road we had. I delt with Richard who was very helpfull and accommodating with the pick up and drop off. Everything worked well and the service was very efficient. I'd deffinately use Road Abode again and thoroughy urge anyone thinking about using this company to look no further. Cheers guys and best regards, the Trueman Family.
fantastic service. Val and Richard were very helpful with our last minute booking and the price was very reasonable. We were advised in advance that the campers were a little older than other companies but they were in excellent condition and brilliant to travel in with our two children. We would highly recommend their friendly, efficient service and will use them again.
This family run company was the best! We rented a Toyota Coaster which is rarely rented and folks thought we were Kiwis! Great 2-3 person motorhome with all the bells and whistles and great gas mileage. Would definitely rent from these folks again!
Our camper was an older diesel Mercedes but was clean and well maintained and handled the many hills and turns quite well. Good service from Richard who delivered the camper to our hotel in Nelson and at the end of our trip picked it up in Queenstown.
We did have a couple of problems - the vehicle did not have any insect screens which was annoying when the sand flies were out. Also we had an ignition/door key break-off in a balky door lock but happily this was solved by a great local mechanic contacted by NZAA and Richard.
Very helpful staff. Vehicle was comfortable and easy to operate.
We had a wonderful trip away in one of your camper vans. It had every thing we needed and it was very clean. We met up with two other family's of four who were keen to take your details for future holidays.
Every thing was explained how it worked by Richard before we left and it all worked perfectly. We had a great time and will be doing it again.
We had a camper van previously off another person and found yours a way better design for a family of four (especially with teenagers) and also your camper van handled way better on the road than our previous experience.
Well Done. Keep up the good work.
Having just completed a six week stint in one of Road Abobe's great campers, I would happily recommend them to any adventurers wanting to taste New Zealand's many scenic delights from behind the wheel of a very comfortable, clean and well maintained vehicle. The freedom of the open road is so much more enjoyable when you can bring the comforts of home with you. I hired the Toyota Cruiser, one of their older style vehicles, it was a delight to drive and more than powerful enough to not feel like you were holding up traffic, not that there is much traffic on the roads of NZ. The Toyota also seemed to give me some road cred as lots of people in similar vehicles would give me a wave as they drove in the opposite direction. The vehicles are fully equipped for onboard cooking right down to the real glass wine glasses. Nice!
Not everything was perfect, a couple of things worked intermittently, but Richard was quick to respond with repairs. I will be coming back.
We found Richard and Val very accommodating to our constant change of plans. We hired the Toyota Coaster. It was clean, gas and water was filled up. We were given proper instructions how everything worked. The only two issue we had was the three way fridge that didn't seem to want to work on gas and the reverse camera not always worked. We got by with using the battery for the fridge as it was only a short term rental. We had a great time being able to freedom camp with hot shower, toilet, heating. Very much self sufficient.
Avoid at all costs!
Budget usually means things might be a bit worn, not everything will work properly but it doesn't mean things will be filthy. I booked weeks in advance for a 4 week rental. When the vehicle arrived it was without roadmaps, campsite or dump station info. The interior of the vehicle was really dirty, the parking tickets discarded on the dashboard were from the previous March and the fresh water monitor was showing three quarters full. This suprised the owner as he had only just topped up the water tank. It turned out that the water tank had a leak, the fresh water supply didn't last 24 hours. The sewage waste monitor didn't work either, nearly all of the bug screens were broken, something the company owner conceded to knowing in advance of our rental but hadn't remedied. The bugs had a field day, every day, to the point where sleeping became a real problem. We lost a days holiday when the vehicle had to go in for repair. A change of Camper was refused and a days rental refund has not been paid to date (Still waiting Richard) nor were we refunded some $80 for required essentials like toilet steriliser and bottled gas as insuffienient had been provided at the start of our rental. We did cause a small amount of damage to the campervan and notified the owners immediately. We took the vehicle to Nelson 3 days early so that the damage could be assessed and repaired prior to the next hire period. The owners opted not to do this but instead charged my credit card the day we flew out of NZ and didn't provide a repair bill or obtain permission to debit my card. My credit card company took a dim view and took up the case. Strangely, Road Abode were unable to provide an Invoice for the amount charged for repair. My money was refunded.
Overall a really unhappy experience, some very sharkey practices and a pretty squalid vehicle. Please spend your money elsewhere.
Owner v. helpful. Van OK mechanically. Sink sometimes blocks, systems monitor not working.
