This place is awesome. We stopped here in the dark mid-way in our trip down the Forgotten World Highway. We did not know what to expect. There was a sign inviting us to make ourselves at home and the owners would see us in the morning. We picked a site and plugged into the power. Wole to a beautiful, peaceful setting. Huge trees. No passing traffic. No sounds except the birds and the river. Quaint showers and toilets spotlessly clean. Invitation to help yourself to $7 frozen pizzas and pay when you leave. So hospitable. Great history display in the kitchen as well as in an old building, setting out the history of the place including the old “ghost” railway construction town. Quaint tiny cabins dotted around the site. We had to keep going but would have loved to have stayed longer. Owner was so nice in the morning. Very inexpensive $. This is an excellent spot to break up the long Forgotten World Highway journey. Don’t be put off by the drive in on the dirt road, it’s worth it. Highly recommended.
Beautiful campground with very clean toilets and hot showers, and a great communal kitchen. Family was very friendly and helpful, and they even had a lovely dog you could pet to your hearts content. Just be prepared for 20+ km of gravel roads depending on what portion of 43 you're driving in on.

JUST STUNNING!!! The best experience we have had in NZ. Remote, tranquil, laid-back, relaxed, off-the-beaten-tracks.
Clean, quiet and beautiful. The owners are incredibly helpful and welcoming. We could have stayed for weeks.

This is the real New Zealand.
Beautiful setting,steeped in history.
I want say just how good it is because I don’t want it spoilt by the masses.
A wonderful green, casual campsite in an interestingly historical part of the countryside. Kitchen, warm showers and flush loos. Highly recommended!
One of our favourite camping spots! Definitely a special spot with personality next to the bush! Nice kitchen, good and clean bathroom with hot showers and an American wwoofing guy made us good company!
My husband and 2 of our friends stayed here - initially we were only going to stay for 2 nights but because we loved it so much we extended our stay. Simon and Sarah are very welcoming. The area is superb - with limited or no cellphone coverage - it made our stay extremely relaxing. We will certainly be back. Lovely scenery, the kitchen and bathroom block were excellent.
What a fantastic place. The location is surreal being right on the edge of the Tangarakau River and the cabins are rustic. The scenery is amazing. The fact that there is no mobile or data coverage is honestly, fantastic. I couldnt do any work, check emails ... just relax. The hosts, Simon and Sarah were absolutely brilliant - they took us on a few guided walks, quad bike ride up the Poutu Hill and Tangarakau Gorge and even a fire in the evening with a few cold ones. This is a place not to be missed!!! In fact, we are going back for New Years!!!!
A gorgeous little gem! comfortable, clean, incredibly friendly and welcoming hosts.Stunning bush-walks, I'll be back.
6km up unpaved track off SH43. Valley setting, flat site, clean facilities, generous hot showers. 10 NZD per person without power. Quiet but for the incessant barking dogs.
