Wasn't a fan of this site. It's just a gravel car park and its expensive. Wifi doesn't reach the lounge. The lounge is a concrete floored room with some tatty sofas. The bathrooms look like they're from the 80s. It's impossible to wash your face over the sink which means the floor gets soaked.

Gravel car park with portaloos.
Not the best site in NZ.
Helicopters buzzing around all day.
I should have done my homework and read other reviews. 👎

We were hesitant with the prior reviews but thoroughly enjoyed this spot. Check in was just signing the paper (easy as) and there were clean, well built shower and toilet block with beautiful hot showers. There were 3 showers each in male and female part and a family room as well. Camping spots are around the site with trees providing some separation. Was worth the extra few dollars to the other DOC sites in the area. There were BBQ’s and cleaning stations as well as drinking water around. Wifi was only in certain parts. More than fine for what we wanted. $15 per person per night.

Hot showers (3) and toilets. Also good working free wifi!
But there is only 1 cooking spot in the ‘kitchen’.
But it’s way to expansive! (42$ for 2 people)
But it’s the cheapest in franz josef so what else can you do

Amazing view of snow capped mountains from the campervan site! Easy to find this campervan site and stayed here for 2 nights. Nearby Franz Josef glacier and 30 mins to Fox Glacier. Clean toilets and unlimited hot showers, safe and quiet camp site. Worth the money paid for full facilities site with a bbq pit! Love this campervan site and will definitely recommend it to anyone coming to visit Franz Josef and Fox Glacier.

This was one of the worst campsites we’ve ever been to! Basically just a car park with a few portaloos that look like they haven’t been cleaned in months.
Compared to other campgrounds this was very expensive for what you get, not at all value for money. Our spot was close to the road at right behind a noisy restaurant rubbish exit, not ideal!

The park really is only a small gravel parking lot but the showers were free, untimed and had great pressure. Our big rating comes because the staff were fantastic. We had motorhome problems and they came to help, let us use their phone and stayed open later in the office to accommodate. They even gave us a 10% off meal voucher to help. Lovely people!

Perfect location, so close in town, clean facilities and I loved that the toilets and showers were individually contained which kept them warm :-)

Literally just a tiny car park with vans packed into the parking spaces. No space between vehicles. Only use if desperate.

Basics gravel, but level pitches, right in the town centre, and in walking distance to everything; shops, bars, walks and the glacier tours. We were parked in a bay of two pitches which had hedges separating from other bays. We parked so that our camper was actually pretty private, despite the small space. We had a lovely large picnic bench, and had a fantastic view of the glacier and mountains. Free showers in porta-cabin style buildings. Accept that you’re going to pay more for less in this high-tourist area. We had a very pleasant stay, and in perfect weather.

Arrived in early afternoon, first impression very pleasant staff keen and helpful, however, given the pitch, where the campervan should go it was small and very crowded, only a metre between vans ( how does this pass fire safety regs). Site soon became very busy and as my van is a larger van and didn’t quite fit into space, thought someone might has asked about size of vehicle before allocating spaces, think they are more concerned about squeezing as many vans in as possible. All the facilities are good but if site is full then inadequate for the numbers.

In terms of camp facilities and grounds this site is lovely and would have been a great place to stay, unfortunately the manager of the grounds is the most confrontational and ignorant individual we have came across throughout all of our travels.
There was no one in the office upon arrival therefore we parked up and went to get a bite to eat, when we returned he insisted we paid $75, upon attempting to discuss this he confronted us numerous times publicly in front of the whole campsite, making the atmosphere awkward and uncomfortable for other campers too.
Completely unprofessional and a real shame one horrendous member of staff can ruin what was a lovely campground.

Pros: Good location, Nice staff, bathrooms are nice and clean. WiFi work es perfectly.
Cons: there were only 3 bathrooms, so when the park is full it can be a bit crowded; also the kitchen is quite small and has no places to eat inside.

Reviewed almost 3 years ago

Franz Josef Campervan Park responds:

Hi Silvia
I am glad you found the facilities clean and the wifi worked well for you. People normally prefer our ensuite style shower and toilet buildings as they are more like a hotel bathroom, we have applied to the council to build more toilets to avoid anyone having to wait so hope to have these approved and operating before the busy period starts. I guess you missed the sign for the guest lounge which is 20-30 metres from the kitchen and offers an area to eat inside - I will look at making a bigger sign. We hope the rest of your holiday goes well.

Franz Josef Campervan Park responds:

Hi Calo

I am glad you enjoyed your stay. We offer the cheapest powered sites in this remote region and do our best to keep prices as low as possible. Currently a powered site for two people with free wifi and hot showers is $35.

A powered site for 2 people costs $39. Poor soil, partly without gravel. When it rains (does it often there) everything in the mud. Only three very narrow, grubby shower / toilets. In the morning you wait "hours" until you finally can make pee. Much too little since no separate toilets are available. Very bad cost / benefit ratio.

Reviewed over 3 years ago

Franz Josef Campervan Park responds:

Hi
I am sorry you were disappointed in your stay.
As a result of guest feedback we spent a month planting more native bush around the site, that is now finished so there should be no mud and the sites are looking a lot nicer. We have one the highest (or the highest) ratios of bathrooms to guests in the town so I am sorry to hear you had to wait for the bathroom - these are cleaned three times per day and if they are dirty please feel free to inform us.
Our aim continues to be the cheapest powered sites, with free wifi and hot showers in Franz Josef and I am sorry we did not meet your expectations on this occasion.

Whilst the showers are hot and the park is cheap it lacks an area to sit anywhere out of the rain other than your van and it was raining when we arrived and pretty much continued until we left the next day. The kitchen facilities are very limited and are smaller than the laundry room. The park is handy to the town (walking distance). It could do with some signs up showing the kitchen and the toilets/shower rooms.

Franz Josef Campervan Park responds:

Thanks for the feedback - we have now added a gazebo with and picnic tables along with a free guest BBQ.

We visited in their off season early June so it wasn't very busy. Great location and by far the nicest looking site available. Restaurant has a lovely warm fireplace to sit around and relax in. Wifi has been really good and fast. We haven't experienced any slowness at all.

250mb per person for "free internet" which was subpar at best. The showers were decent with hot water. We paid $35 for 2 people during the summer season. The small hut for a kitchen had 1 sink and a portable burner stove for 2 pots. This was a tad annoying because the lady before us was using both stoves for over an hour so you could potentially be waiting a while to eat. I guess this is a decent place for such a small town, but 1 night is more than enough for us.

This site is part of quite a large complex that includes motel units. We arrived at night and just stayed one night. It was fairly straightforward and $45 for three of us in a powered site. The bathrooms are fairly new and nicely done. Shower pressure average but nice and hot. Ventilation only via a ceiling vent which I hadn't a hope of reaching (at 5'4") so when I arrived in the bathroom it was already dripping in condensation from the previous occupant who perhaps had the same issue. Since they have electric lighting seems that an extractor fan would be easily included. Had to pay a $20 deposit to get the key to the bathrooms. The free wifi was limited to 400 MB but was only available on one device at a time and so glacially slow (no pun intended!) that we gave up and hot spotted our phone for faster service. The manager did apologise for the wifi the next day when refunding our key deposit and said the whole township has huge issues with having enough capacity for internet demands.
