The hosts of this site are very friendly and hard working but clearly overtaxed. The site is getting tired and needs some maintenance. We stayed in a tent in the “glade” where one picnic table was broken and unusable. There were several recliner chairs left out in the elements and deteriorating. The park was busy and the small kitchen was overtaxed. Signs indicated water needed to be treated and water in the sinks at the bathrooms was brown. It’s a good location, decent place, and great people. It just needs some more attention.

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hello Erick, Than ks for your honest review, which we take responsibility for. We are a small, one person business and I can only attend to so much. The camp always needs work done on it and we try our hardest. We clearly state that we are back to basics, rustic and it is more about the native bush, river and quiet location that attracts people, not the old furniture. The chairs and picnic table are gone. The brown water is unusual but can occur after heavy rain. You have motivated me to sort things out, thanks.
I hope you have a good holiday. Marcus

Really nice place and really friendly owner. It has a gorgeous landscape. 15$/person. Just keeping in mind that you need 2$ extra for the shower (it’s really worth it). I feel bad about the 7/10. The owner is making a real effort to make this place a great site, and it is certainly different from any of the big chain campgrounds. The campervan pitches are a little cheek-by-jowl, and it was a bit of a squeeze to make sure we didn't hit guy ropes and trees to get into ours. Having said that, the site is perfect for families with young kids who don't want a bog-standard holiday park. There's a lot to keep youngsters entertained, and I can see why it's so popular, just not for us older fuddy-duddies.

Hi Richard and Chris,

After a day in Akaroa, we stopped here and were delighted. It’s quite unlike the chain holiday parks, with a laid back, relaxed vibe. We loved it! There are compost toilets and a kitchen/lounge that is in a partly open structure, but all worked great. $15 per person, but you have to pay extra for showers. There is also a lovely nature trail, a giant swing and an abandoned film set in the forest - so fun to explore. If you’re ok with things being a little different from a chain holiday park, you’ll love it!

This is a great little campground. Stream at the bottom of the hill, walk trails through the bush to the top of the hill, birds in the trees (and not just sparrows) and good clean facilities. If you enjoy nature but don't want to be too far from the nearest coffee shop (just 5km to Little River Café) this is a good option for you. Thoroughly enjoyed our two nights there over Easter, as did all the happy families there at the time.

My favorite campground of our 3 weeks trip with our campervan. Stayed there for two nights. Marcus is super friendly and helpful. Love the bushwalk, the sounds of nature and all the creative and fun stuff around, like the swings in the wood or the random car or bus seats around with lovely views. A lot of details made with love, that makes such a nice atmosphere. The dry toilets work perfectly. Such a good idea!

It’s definitely not for everybody (and wouldn’t have been for me in the wintertime as everything is in the open air, including showers), but it is a paradise in the summer, especially for kids (and those less young...). This is hands down our favorite place to camp in the whole world!!! Little River Campground is so dreamy. The owners are laid back, helpful and friendly. The campsites are spacious and the amenities are more than adequate. There is a kitchen area, which is outdoors and covered, and there is a refrigerator for your perishable foods. There are warm showers and nice toilets with sinks outside. There are plenty of trails to tramp on, and tons of fun things to find along the way (like swings!! And slides!! And a tiny village hidden in the forest!!). There are also hundreds of bellbirds to be heard and seen- their morning song is such a lovely way to wake up and in the evenings, they provide the soundtrack to your dinner!! There really is a little river running through the property where you can see (and feed) huge eels. We've been back a couple times and plan to return any time we're back in NZ. It is absolutely perfect. Not posh or pretentious, just what you need and a little extra comfort. Please, go stay at Little River!!! Unless you have something against gorgeous scenery in a friendly environment, you'll love it here. Go check it out!!!!

As the weather for our week of caravanning was looking dismal everywhere but Canterbury and the Banks Peninsula, we opted to revisit our old favourite knowing we would get the peace and tranquility, plus quirky character, that we love best. Having visited at least once a summer for the past few years, we still find new things to see and do at Little River Campground - some are new additions but it seems there is always more to discover here and in the surrounds. This time we encountered the intriguing Chinatown movie set hidden onsite in the forest, a drum kit in a shed and the new Big Swing - good for the adrenaline junkies out there! We also explored the neighbouring Department of Conservation Reserve, which was a beautiful native forest track (is that a King Fern we saw in there?), and used the campground as a great base to visit Birdlings Flat Crystal & Fossil Museum and then the Hilltop Tavern for tea. We learned there is a 2 hour forest walk that goes from the Hilltop right down to the Campground and observed the building of a brand new shower block onsite, both of which we are keen to make use of next time we visit. The camp playground has more jungle gyms and kids bikes too. This place has so much quirky, retro and recycled character - a little slice of old New Zealand, complete with native forest and birds and crazy kids activities - it takes us back to our own camping and bach holidays as kids. We really love the little details too - pretty flowers in vases and beautiful art everywhere, fresh cotton handtowels rather than wasteful paper napkins and super-friendly service from the hosts. This is the perfect place to go if you want a no-stress, kiwiana-inspired camping holiday. For quiet there is always a private nook to find in the forest or along the bubbling Okuti river, and for social times the big semi-outdoor kitchen makes mealtimes extra merry. Thanks for having us Marcus and Megan - we can't wait to visit again!

We were very surprised when we arrived here after seeing so many good reviews. It looked incredibly run down, not a particularly scenic area either. Outside kitchen with old furniture in it. All in all not a nice place. Maybe if you are a bit of a hippy it could be appreciated.

Reviewed over 3 years ago

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hello Amy,

I too am surprised that you gave us a 3/10 rating. We state clearly we are a back to basics camp. 'If you enjoy native bush, birds, views and want to see some nature we are a perfect place to stay. If you are wanting a holiday park chain you may like to stay somewhere else.If you come here for the great outdoors over quality facilities we hope you'll rank us favourably.'
We have plenty of great comments about our camp being the best people have stayed at. It is more the surrounding bush than the facilities. Did you go and explore the bush walks, check out the views from the hills and wander through ancient forest we have? We don't force people to stay and it is not for everyone. We are not a Top Ten and strive to reuse and recycle material for the camp. Better luck next time with your choice of places to stay. Sorry to disappoint you but there is no need to give us 3 when it clearly states what we offer. Kind regards Marcus

Rapidly becoming a stalwart on the summer camping/chill holiday experience for our wee family - Little River Camp Ground is set within stunning native bush complete with a chattering river running through it. Visiting at 'peak' season the experience was relaxed and easy-going (special mention to the kitchen/lounge facilities which perfectly combine food preparation and meeting new people) and suited a pair of adults and a six-year-old. From exploring magical forest trails, getting scared on the BIG swing, listening to the birds and reading books while keeping an eye on kids playing until sunset - this place has something for everyone.

Fantastic mini hiking trails with cute car seats and a table to watch the sunset. Wi-Fi coverage is confined to a small area by the office but that's the only criticism. Very kind people who helped us set up as it was our first night ever with camper. Had several walks from campsite. Well signposted, different length walks - campsite owner made them interesting. Piano in the middle of one walk up mountain!! Armchair on another - strange but true!!

Nice bush retreat, although powered sites were a bit close together for our liking, although it seems to be that way everywhere in NZ!

Despite the eco-toilets (not my preference) they do spruce them up with a bit of quirkiness which I liked, but there is no light so come handy with a torch!

Unfortunately we had some rude people turn up late at night and their outdoor porch light was glaring into our van all night, so we really quite sick of inconsiderate campers being at the end of our trip!

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hi Monique,

Thanks for your review of the Little River Campground. We appreciate your time and honesty and are always trying to improve our facilities. We have just opened our new waterless Composting toilets, which are a vast improvement since you were here. As you know, we're a back to basics camp, not so much the standard camp we are listed under the rankers profile. If we are busy (which isn't very often), the sites are small and I can understand your frustration of someones light being on all night. (some people have no idea). All the best with your future travels. Marcus (owner).

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley is open for business… Visit Website …now's your chance to take a closer look.

We have enjoyed so much Little River Campground that we have already returned four times since December!
It is basic indeed but your closest neighbours are fantails, wood pigeons and kanukas. Also its location makes it the perfect base to visit the Banks Peninsula.

Just like the description mentions, this place is not for everyone. The toilets are long drop and the campsite is indeed a bit rough but the surroundings are stunning and the owners very friendly. Little River Campground is a very special place for us and we have enjoyed every single of our stays there!

Really nice little campground, great location for us moving on and exploring banks peninsula.
Run by a friendly bunch, who gave us some great advice for our onward journey further south, and a cute area surrounding, with some nice scenic walks.

Great location and nature/bush/bird life and fun for kids with mudslide/toboganning and water hole. HOWEVER, cabin was grossly overcharged at $110 per night - basically a 70s bach which was fine BUT no toilet and queen bed had springs pushing up where they should'nt be. Toilets available were communal long drops (3 for entire camping ground) with only 2 outside wash basins.

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Thanks for the review and feedback naturerocks. We are continually trying to upgrade the campground facilities. First on the list is a new mattress for Kowhai cabin. (easily done). Not so easy is improving the toilet set up. We are trying out different methods to reduce the impact on the environment and admit they aren't ideal. As we do not have septic tanks it is more difficult to have composting loos attached to the cabins. One day we hope to have things spot on. Great that you enjoyed the location, native bush and river and if it is fun for kids, we hope the parents can relax a bit too. The price reflects the accommodation plus everything else the camp and native habitat offer.

$30 per van with ugly compost toilets and muddy campsite is a huge rip off! Didn't have a choice and due to some booked party stayed with no kitchen facilities access.

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hello Bandzior,
I am sorry it has taken this long to respond to your review and we are sorry you did not enjoy the experience of staying (at all it seems). We admit our long drops can be smelly and we are continually trying to improve them. We are a back to basics Kiwi campground with amazing bush walks and river, which are part of the native habitat. Part of the camp fee is entry to this area and it helps us to pay for our pest control and maintenance.
If you stayed on the weekend of the 4th November, the camp was fully booked for a private function so there were not meant to be any other people staying. If this is the case it would have been because we were trying to help you out because, as you say, you had no other choice. I hope someone explained the situation, as it was a private party.

Run by the Birklands Habitat Trust, this site is suitable for those looking for a bush hideaway. Very quiet and quirky. Facilities are basic like stepping back in time. Great local walks and good for bird spotting. Camping as it used to be.

Little River Campground - Okuti Valley responds:

Hi John,

Thanks for your feedback and review. The Birdlands Trust ceased to operate about 10 years ago and the original land area was subdivided into two properties. The larger area, The Little River Campground and native Habitat is 7.5h or 18 acres and has no caged birds now. We have a covenant with the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust http://www.bpct.org.nz/ as well as the small campground. The 'Camping as it us to be' is a quote we have been using thanks. Retro, back to basics camping.
