Absolute treasure. Camp right on the beach in a large bay. Nice walks nearby, very quiet. Highly recommend
Incredible beach and a lovely campground in a beautifull part of a special country
Wow! Great place to stay. We visited for the first time last week and stayed 4 days. Beautiful safe swimming beach, we were lucky the water was very warm and had several swims. The clarity of the water is also amazing. Long sandy bay, good for swimming, fishing and other water activities.
Good choice of campsites either beachside or slightly further back. Plenty of shade in many parts of the camp. And generally most sites are reasonably flat.
Plenty of long drop toilets all the way along the campsite areas. Cold showers, with good pressure, plenty of these also.
Excellent BBQ area with free BBQ, sinks, BBQ tables with board games painted on them. All under a well covered area overlooking the beach.
Composting facilities available for left over food, excellent system they have arranged here. You can do this yourself, or you have the option of taking a small bucket with lid and bringing to them daily or when suits for them to sort food for you.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Tho we did find the office was closed most of the day, when we went for advice, maps etc.
Road in is a long winding narrow gravel road which can be a bit "hairy" in places if you meet another vehicle. Thankfully we had no problems with our motorhome and trailer. But could be interesting in the busier times.
Fantastic views on the road in, well worth a stop in the few places you can park and look over the sea.
Bookings can be made for sites, we did use this system tho. We arrived with cash but eft pos is available also.
Well worth the drive, to such a peaceful area, we will defintely be back
Absolutely gorgeous surroundings and a lovely place to stay. Sites right on the beach front and some set back too for choice, with clean long drop toilets and cold showers in cubicles (has hooks to put your solar shower in too if you want). The staff are very friendly with loads of advice for walks etc. Gorgeous scenery and safe beach for swimming, definitely worth the winding gravel road to get there!
I would like to thank Rankers Camping App in 1st place to help in finding camping sites with ease. This place is an amazing DOC managed campsite. Worth the travel for a mind blowing ocean view and real touch to be with nature. The manager was so kind and friendly to welcome us, advise in setting up things. Ample and private beach bay to enjoy in shore. Well maintained toilets though it’s compost and basic facilities. Down sides are the unsealed gravel road stretch which is time consuming with the usual wear and tear for the vehicle and no shops near by, pack all your needs sufficiently. That’s the cons I would say rather. At the end it’s a great site to spend for a weekend.
Arrived in winter and it was very quiet (3 people on the campsite). Camp manager was extremely friendly and gave great advice. Drop toilets and electrical sites. Cold outdoor showers, although there was a sign for warm showers at a lowly cost of $2.
Wow. We loved it here. This was our first night in nz in our camper van. It was a really special place to stay. The campground is quiet and very well maintained right on the beach. it is situated along the length of the beach in a beautiful wide sandy bay backed by low lying sand dunes. There is a pleasant walk along the cliffs to the north of the campsite which we enjoyed and our 5 year old just loved splashing about in the waves and running around on the beach. I couldn't get over the night sky either. I've never seen so many stars. The big but is that the drive along the grit track really does take 1.5hrs. At the time, my husband was ready to kill me for my choice of campsite, but once we'd got there and he'd had a sleep, he loved it. It was indisputably our favourite place to stay of our whole trip.

Best choice ever to drive all the way up there. Stayed for 2 nights, in a tent right by the shore. Very large area with very few people. Some kiwis that come here every year for several weeks. Top facilities. Shelter, sinks with water, bbq area, showers. Very cool warden that gives you advice about hikes and weather forecasts. The beach at low tide is a perfect place to play frisbee et cetera.
Beautiful position on the beach with great walks and views. managers very helpful. Plenty of (cold!) showers and long drop toilets. Worth the difficult drive!
A great place to spend a night. Very secluded and peaceful, one of my favourite campsites in New Zealand.
Beautiful location, really friendly and helpful camp manager and perfect spot, right on a secluded beach with plenty of walks near by. Its a LONG drive down very windy, gravel road but worth it at the end. Allow yourself plenty of time to get there. Also, we weren't aware, but you can't continue the whole way around the peninsula from there. The road up the west side ends shortly after the campsite.
Plenty of compost toilets and showers - basic but fine. They also have two powered sites, but these aren't on the beach front.
Beautiful location and quiet. Difficult gravel road to get to.
Brilliant location, lots of facilities, friendly crowd. Some great tracks to run around locally. Very friendly staff.
DOC campground directly at the beach at the top of the Coromandel Peninsula.
Access savings worth hundreds of $$ on Top Ranked NZ Accommodation and Activities for just $1 per day.
Nice beach and good toilets.
Stayed there for a night... wish I had more time spent there.... clean long drops, free cold shower, bonfire places, an awesome beach. Waking up and seeing the ocean is one of the greatest things :)
Would come back if in NZ again.
Beautiful, friendly manager, good outside kitchen, a lot of space.
It's a wonderful campground directly at an awesome beach which is very good to swim! The camp has a cooking shelter with electronic barbeque, cold showers and enough and clean long drops. It's the best DOC camping we had on our trip through NZ.
Awesome camp ground just on the beach. Amazing to wake up with sea view. It was well worth the drive over a long unsealed road. As it's scenic, it's more expensive. 10 dollar for a campground without power and hot showers is too much.
We have been on the road in NZ for more than 2 years and this DOC camp is one of the best places of the entire country. Best sea view camp we have ever seen!!!
Come in December before Christmas when the Pohutukawas are flowering and all the trees are fire red. Don't come around Christmas like everybody else.
Great facilities. Went there during winter and had the place to ourselves.
Large camp beside the sea. Good swimming and bonfires.
It is a wonderful place. The people who work there were very friendly. It is just wonderful there!
Very hard to get to this DOC site but it is a beautiful place. Good walks around and they have a cabin for the solar shower.
Good cold showers, excellent location.
Great campsite right on the water's edge. DOC site with limited facilities, but well maintained. The drive in is demanding in a large campervan, but take care and time, and enjoy this great spot.
My family of four (two kids aged 2 and 5 months) stayed there over christmas with my brother and his family of four.
On the drive up it was great not many cars, but when we got there DOC had given one of our campsites away even though we had booked a month ahead, but they were great sorting that out. The toilets are clean - bear in mind it is a long drop so always watch when young ones are going. When driving up to Port Jackson it is a gravel road so PLEASE drive slow the road is not that wide and you have to wait sometimes for traffic to pass, we almost crashed into people who were driving to fast so please be careful and think of whats ahead of you... Apart from the wether (rain) it was great and would go there again anytime xx
Great spot! Campground is magic, right on the beach, quiet and family friendly, will definitely be back.
Beautiful place in front of the ocean.
Neat camp, pleasant people. Wonderful scenery. Dotterels nesting. Need careful driving on unsealed roads.
An awesome DOC campsite, well kept, clean toilets, great managers, a slice of heaven.
Fantastic location, worth the long drive on a narrow winding road (an experience in itself). No shops or facilities anywhere close so come prepared. Beachfront DOC camping ground with basic facilities & very friendly & helpful managers. Very busy long weekends & holidays so make sure you book.
Very friendly staff. Well kept grounds right on the ocean - perfect. BBQs and picnic tables. $10 each.
A campsite directly at the beach with good toilets and showers.
Nora and Edward
Nice camp site on the beach $10PP.
Lovely campground with lots of space, really long access road and just gravel road, needs a lot of time to get there.
Mike & Suzann
Relatively isolated site with easy route from Coromandel (unsurfaced road). Back to nature location with sufficient facilities - good intro to real New Zealand.
Top spot - long gravel road/not too many tourists.
Awesome beach. Best fishing spot until now. Good for collecting mussels!! Fire allowed! Very friendly staff.
Brilliant DOC site on a lovely beach.
Direct on the sea!
Great location. Right on beach. DOC campsite with good pit toilets (not smelly), cold showers and running water. Wish we could have stayed longer.
Johannes & Jopke Fokkema
A very good camping place with many possibilities.
