Epic place to stay, facilities are lacking but are as described. One of the long drops / showers was filled with flies so we used another one of the other facilities on site. We stayed here over waitangi weekend and had no issues.
We tried staying here but when we arrived found that it was fully booked! It looked beautiful.
It is accessed by a semi short gravel road. We did it with our caravan and it was slow going.
When we got here they referred us to an other DOC campsite 1.5 hours away, which they knew had room.
It would be better if there was a booking system or direct number to call. It would have saved us a good 1hr+ drive.
Amazingly clear water two beautiful bays easily accessible from campsite.
Complete recycling setup however require payment for dumping / collection of rubbish. Showers and toilet nice however composite toilets had excessive flies.
Beautiful grounds; lots of space, clean bathrooms. Cold shower only, which we didnt see but its winter so we didn't look, either. Staff person was polite and friendly. Would recommend, & return. On your way, gravel road.
We stayed in July in a campervan. Didn’t book and there was plenty of space. So pleased we found this place. Great facilities and what a beach/beaches. Highly recommend.
A beautiful slice of heaven. Came on Easter weekend with a lot of locals enjoying their break. What a courteous bunch to camp with 👍👍
Spent a lovely couple of days here. There was lots of space and plenty of trees to find shade under, the beautiful bay and good clean facilities (flush toilet and cold shower). Paid $13 pppn for a tent pitch.
One of the most beautiful beaches I have seen in New Zealand. Beautifully maintained spacious site and great facilities.
Great location and a lovely beach. The facilitys were tidy and well spread through the site.
I almost had an issue when the ranger came round to check everyone had paid (as there was nobody in the office) as she had no idea about the campsite passes and started making out as if that was my fault! In the end she begrudgingly excepted that it might be something she needed to learn more about and went on her way
Nice big campsite and plenty of space. Basic toilets, cold showers outside. The beaches here are stunning and worth a visit.
Highly recommend if you’re travelling cheap, really nice spot amongst trees. The showers had no doors so were semi private. Beach is AMAZING - especially for boogie board surfing!

A slice of paradise!! Green lawns to pitch a tent with lots of shade. No views from the campsites but when you walk over the hill to the beach it is breathtaking. You can expect mozzies and possums at night just like anywhere else in nature - not a biggie. The ranger was super nice and helpful. We stayed two nights and left reluctantly. Will definitely be back!
Beautiful lush campground with lots of grass and trees. There’s an upper Park for views and the lower park for ocean proximity. There are lots of toilet blocks around. Cold outdoor showers only. Lovely vibe.
Beach camping is always the positive. Showers are outdoors so no privacy. Toilets not the cleanest.
There’s no one in the office the 2 days we were there so not sure how you’re suppose to pay if you don’t have any cash on you?? Had to call the city council later to set up payment.
Grass area for camping. Lots of shade. Beach is nice which really made it enjoyable. Clean grounds, no rubbish etc laying around.
EXTREMELY BAD FOR BUGS.
Beautiful to visit for the day but would not highly recommend.
A beautiful location. After paying at the honesty box you can choose between the upper or lower campsite. We chose the upper, found an area to set up then went for a stroll along the beach. Picture perfect 'horseshoe shaped' beach. Clean, flushable toilets were close by. Will definitely be back.
Great location right next to the beach. Flush toilets in a block near the beach with outside cold showers. Lots of flies around at night time and also some kids making a nuisance nearby at night. The camp backs on to a public road and some people (kids?) threw rocks and one hit our van and then ran off up the road. We told the guy who is the ranger there and he said it is a common problem. If we had known before we would have not camped up near that road side.
Badly laid out, no guidance at all about where was ok to park our van so we had to pull up on a random patch of grass and hope for the best. No view at all!
The camping areas are set back from the beach. Went fishing off the rocks and caught snapper. Pretty busy considering how far out of the way it is. Quite a lot of day trippers here too. Bay is good for those with a kayak. Boat ramp is nearby too.
Great site in a wonderful setting. Busy and only 4 cold showers. Pitches good size and right on the beach.
Absolutely awesome camping ground in a beautiful bay. Fantastic beach just a few steps away. All facilities I saw were clean and in good condition. Make sure you can pay your stay cash!!
A great spot close to several beaches and with wonderful walks around. When we stayed in September the site was not staffed, but it appears to be in summertime (which probably also grants you access to cooking facilities and a fridge). Plenty of space for both tents and caravans (though no power provided). There is a boat ramp near by.
Camped in the upper area as the lower spots were taken and very wet. All the spots are grassy and as it has been very wet we were quite concerned that we would get bogged (although others seemed to be okay). Beautiful area with lovely beaches and walks. Toilets in the upper area were partially closed and the one available toilet was filthy, so it was quite a hike to the toilets near the ranger station. No showers in the upper area.
Beautiful landscapes, toilets, showers. DOC campsite, so not expensive. We have seen here dolphins and killer whales, found some giant shells. As it is Maori land, we have met young Maori boys who let us try to ride their horses on the beach.
Wonderful spot. Beautiful beach, and amenities were clean. Showers were hot and there is no wifi which I liked as I'm on holiday so no one could bug me :) What I loved the best was the absolutely beachfront sites. It was great to see DOC looking after the birdlife with designated areas out of bounds for foot traffic. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I lived closer.
Perfect place. Wonderful beaches and top for snorkelling. Nice people.
Parklike setting, lots of space, $10 per person. Clean showers and facilities. Communal kitchen, laundry and cheaper than in Nelson.
Awesome spot!!! A wonderful bay and the view from the upper ground is amazing. Standard and simple facilities.

In short: You are able to camp at two of New Zealand's most beautiful beaches. Outstanding location, DOC standards. Few km gravel road to access the place.
Maitai Bay was the most beautiful place I've ever been to in NZ. It's a definite that we'll be returning this year!
Beautiful spot overlooking the whole bay, we stayed one night in winter - quiet but not deserted. Clean flushing toilets, cold showers.
Absolutely fascinating place, takes a little to get there which is so worth it. Not too crowded in the middle of March. Fantastic bay, nice swim. All facilities good DOC standard, nice view over the ocean out of the (cold) showers.

Lovely grassy area at a beautiful bay. Toilets and cold showers.
Close to two beautiful beaches - fantastic for swimming, even at low tide. Facilities very basic but only $10 per person per night. Pitches quite large and protected by trees. Last 2km of road unsealed but not bad surface.
Fab Doc site but sooooooo many mozzies! Gotta have a swim in one of the lovely adjacent beaches all easy walking distance. Then cold shower to rinse off. Flushing toilets and long drops. Stinky but what do you expect. Rubbish picked up daily with a sticker you buy from the truck. 30.00 for two adults and two kids per night. Would go back prepared with solar shower and repellant.
DOC Maitai Bay – Here is New Zealand beauty! The Doc campsite is your basic, but with flush toilets! Walking the ocean stretch on the other side of the bay was an all day event. White sand, turquoise water and blue sky. On the bay side are twin bays. The Fig Tree Bay track is STUNNING!! A bit tricky to find the start of. Keep walking along in the direction instructed and continue past the house with the flags that says no trespassing [stay on the beach]. Just past you will head up onto the grass and look for the orange marker. Walk up the gully first for the best views while making your way around. Hiking poles would be really helpful! It is steep!
One of the best spots of the entire country. Make sure you go to the upper left side of the camp ground to have a good view over the bay. Look out for some dolphins in the evening. A truly magical place!
Great DOC campground, short walk over dunes to beach. Toilets clean. Quiet and great view of the night sky. Excellent walk to neighboring beach.
Sites in open with some low level trees.
Very few campers there in October and understand it fills quickly in high season.
Great one night stop.
Awesome location, beautiful beach.
Good campsite! tidy showers and toilets.
A little bit windy
Great place!! The two beaches are lovely and child friendly! We were only there for one night but could easily have spent more time here. The campground is large and basic with only cold showers.
Big Doc campsite, two beautiful beaches to choose from. Will be returning for sure. We were there in February and could put our tent anywhere we felt like. Highly recommended spot to stay and visit if you are in the area.
Stunningly beautiful location overlooking a horseshoe bay. Top site said to have better views of the bay so that was where we stayed. Sun rises over the headland across the bay and the beach. Beach and sea a delight. Two other beautiful bays within easy walking distance. Very quiet.
Clean flush toilets and sound basic facilities. Informative and helpful warden.
We were very happy they squeezed us in when they were rather full. The beach was beautiful. I only gave this a lowish score because lots of the sites seemed to be on a slope which can't be very pleasant for campers. And the water wasn't drinkable where we were so we had to go quite a long way to get some.
Beautiful beach with a cliff jump, if you know where to go. The campsite would be perfect if it was a bit cheaper, we paid $30 p/n for an overcrowded somewhat noisy camp. The description mentioned private sites? That couldn't be further from truth, at least not in the campsite division we were shown to by the rangers. The service was extremely helpful and friendly though. Facilities were standard DOC ones, but clean. Not the place to head to during peak time, unless you are into busy communal camping with someone's tent pitched only a couple metres from yours.
Really nice twin bays, ideally the site would be a bit closer to the water. Looks good for swimming although the weather put us off.
Nice big site though and clean facilities.
Big popular campsite. Two very nice beaches, good swimming! A pity you can't pitch yr tent/park yr van with view on the beach/sea, but hey, you can't have everything in life ;). Good facilities and loooots of space
Magical place. Awesome swimming at beautiful unspoilt beach. Camp site was quiet, clean toilets. First time there can't wait to return.
Will and Taylor
Nice one, DOC! Beautiful beaches. Lots of space for camping, although rather busy in the summer. Cold showers and lots of toilets. Short drive down a gravel road to get there. Bathrooms were rather smelly...
Jan and Pedi
What a site, what a place. We visited in March 2012, stunning location and well laid out site. Usual DOC facilities.
Nice location, bad dirty toilets, too noisy in the summer holidays.
Claudia & Julian
Nice beach on the North Island.
Best place we have been to! Beautiful beach, very safe for the kids. Can see your feet when you are deep in the water. Rock pools to wander around as well as sandy beach. Good toilets and cold showers by the beach. We will be back again :)
Beautiful location; site. stunning beaches
Clean facilities , great location and DoC pricing. Absolutely value for money.
Stunning location high above two coves with clear water, fantastic swimming, also nice walks. Facilities basic but $8.10 per night. Wonderful.
Unspoilt, clean, picturesque.
Pristine views and easy beach access with nice day walks and grassy campgrounds.
Karikari Penninsula. Two Bays and two beaches in the lovely and beautiful North Island.
Beautiful location, very friendly locals who can inform you about nice tramping tracks in the area.
Good DOC campsite with a fantastic beach.
Mean as DOC campground!!!
Most beautiful place for swimming, snorkeling, fishing, chilling - I'm in love with it!
A simple campsite located next to a beautiful beach. Interesting walks. Stunning spot.
V large well maintained site right on the spectacular beach. No hot showers but ok for a couple of nights - beach one of the best in NZ
DOC campsite. Beautiful scenery and quiet.
very nice spot right above a twin bay. Nice scenery and beautiful sunset. DOC campgrounds in general are a good way to stay overnight. In the middle of nature and many have beatiful scenery.
