To be honest, I didn’t find the walk was worth the effort. Lots of rocks to climb over & uneven trail. I found it very hard on my knees & hips. There was very little view as you walked through the bush. To be fair I’ve spent a lot of time in the Rocky Mtns of Canada and have seen several glacier lakes. This one wasn’t overly impressive. Gertrude’s saddle was far more interesting with all the small avalanches going off around you (September 2018- was closed when we were there 2 weeks ago)
The walk was hard at times and pretty muddy in some spots but worth it at the end. Lake Marian is beautiful and fun to take a dip in after so make sure you bring swimwear. Water was a bit chilly!
Beautiful !! I was a bit ill at the time so I found the walk up hill quite hard, but it didn’t take very long and was totally worth it. Stunning. We walked into the bush a bit past the immediate beach to find our own private area. There’s a toilet up there too. I can imagine it could get a bit cramped if you went at a peak hour as there’s not loads of space for people to be there. But so lush for a short walk
Interesting walk/occasional scramble through the forest to an alpine lake. Time is right and you will have the place all to yourself.
Just before the Homer Tunnel on the way to Milford Sound this track follows a flowing river before climbing to a stunning alpine lake. While the track is uphill and bumpy in places, it should be achievable for most and is worth the effort. Take swimming shorts in summer.
Beautiful walk of two hours until the lake, some difficult part on the way with trees on the way.
Beautiful walk, well marked. Fun scrambling over the rocks to the top. Fantastic views of the lake and waterfalls at the top. Very peaceful.
Absolutely stunning, even with rain. Do it!
Beautiful walk in the bush to reach the lake, beautiful colour, beautifull waterfall and an enjoyable walk.
Far from touristic Milford Sound, we have done a walk through bush and near beautiful waterfall to an isolated lake. As usual, the colour of the lake was splendid.

Rooty, wet tramp to a tranquil alpine lake.
Steep hike up to the beautiful alpine lake. The rapids/waterfall in the middle of the journey is astounding!! Only issue was that some areas of the trail were flooded, so we had to do some 'creative' stream crossings.
The forest, the walk over a bridge, awesome view above the lake, not many places to sit down, good signs.
After a walk along a raised track almost on top of raging rapids, the trail crossed a few streams and then climbed up a steep rocky mountain to Lake Marian. It was beautiful!
First thing to know if you are going to Milford Sound for hikes is do not drive all the way to the information centre past the Homer Tunnel, you should stop at the Divide, most of the walks are there. Lake Marian view is not worth it when raining as not much visibility.
Nice track for average sporty people, track starts at a swingbridge, goes on through rainforest, some steep sections, takes about 4-5 and ends at Lake Marian, a big blue lake between mountains.

Fantastic lake, it was worth it to do the hard walk.
The track is three hours, but always in the shade of a beautiful forest and find the lake, totally worth it.
A bit hard. The track to get there was hard but finally really worth it.
Hard and steep walk. Amazing view, not too many people.

Beautiful track and really isolated. We did it in winter and the snow came through to our knees. Amazing experience, especially when you get to the lake.
An easy track compared to the view you get at the end of it. One of the better spots I have encountered in New Zealand.
Walk to a beautiful lake. Views are awesome. Do not forget your swim suit and go for a jump in the lake, it is refreshing.
Short walk about 5km with lake and the mountains at the end. Really beautiful and nice to have an ice cold bath.
Great walk, but quite challenging. Made it in 2h return. Totally worth it.
Awesome day including a refreshing bath in the lake. Just amazing.
Great little lake in the mountains - just amazing!
The best day - walk! The walk is not so easy but the view and the Lake are awesome.
Amazing walk to a beautiful mountain lake!
Hard scramble to reach lake at the top but worth the climb for fantastic view, especially if sunny.
Well worth adding to your trip to Key Summit. This is a much tougher track than the stroll to Key Summit but it isn't that hard and if you've got the time, it's worth adding to your itinerary.
This track took me to my limits! Loved it but the destination of this track was not really worth it.
I enjoyed this. Lake is very beautiful on a clear day.
Nice 3 hour return trek, very steep at the some places, with a really nice refreshing dip in Lake Marian ! Make sure you go for a swim.
Rocky track. You need an hour and a half to reach peaceful Lake Marion.
Stunning view surrounded by mountains and wonderful reflections in the lake. Very peaceful place. The track offers a nice walk in the bush (steep and muddy) but less crowded than the key summit track.
It took a bit longer than the 3 hours to complete as there were many slips and boggy patches but well worth the clamber up. Stunning location with snowy mountains dropping into a crystal clear lake.
Took longer than the advertised time. Well worth the walk. Nearby key summit (part of Routeburn) worth checking out. KMs take longer than advertised, 4hr/2hr respectively.

Steep, rugged, intrepid, worth the effort! Go prepared for changes in weather though as Marian creek can turn from a creek to a raging torrent.
A brilliant spot to pitch your tent overnight for a nice sunrise, or on a hot day (in Fiordland.. lol) be sure to dip your toes in the water or if you're game enough... have a swim!
Challenging enough hike with an amazing destination. Definitely worth the hike, especially on a warm and sunny summer day.
Steep but nice 3 hour walk.
Very natural walk with a nice lake at the end - 3 hours return.
A tough climb in places not for the faint hearted but well worth it. The lake was beautiful, advise going on a clear day as low cloud did not lift and the true spectacle could not be appreciated.
Very hard but the Lake Marian is a beautiful place.
Awesome tracks, fantastic lake, very clear and blue, between the mountains.
Very hard but there are just a few other people so you feel like you are alone. Beautiful lake at the end.
A long track but at the end you can swim in an awesome lake!
Everything was perfect, especially the view, but the track itself should be improved.
Unbelievable glacier lake..... stunning. Difficult hike in poor conditions however, worth the hike!
Excellent hike that wanders through a thick rainforest and ends up on Lake Marian, a beautiful glacier lake.
Walk was a bit dangerous, very steep.

Short track, beautiful forest, great waterfalls, no too long.
Our best view of the whole trip. Well worth the climb, only 1.5 hours of steep stuff. Snow along the track in last 300metres. This is great time of year to go (mid Sept) as the snow in the valley looked spectacular. Saw and heard 3 small avalanches much further up the valley
3 hrs, difficult in places due to loose rocks, Well worth it when you reach lake Marian. Beautiful.
Beautiful walk, very nice reward at the end. 3 hours, 1/2 hour steep climbing then back.
Beautiful view. Difficult uphill climb - really enjoyed it.
Matthias & Ceristiane
Really challenging because of climbs - but the view was great!
Nicky and Andy Prescott
Steep 1 1/2 hr climb but SO worth it! Crystal clear lake surrounded by snowy mountains, totally isolated. Plus it's warm enough to swim in!
A natural track with a lot to see. Lake Marian is worth the trip.
it's not easy to walk (good footwear), nice location (rainforest, waterfalls), nice view at lake Marian (mountains, surroundings) 3 hours return
Absolutely breathtaking beautiful medium trekking fantastic view at the top lovely falls at the bottom 20min walk for people who don't walk often.

Lake Marian falls.
What a top walk!! It is a pretty steep walk of about 75-85 mins uphill to the Lake which is in a Hanging valley. The first part is along a roaring river though and is worth doing that first board walk part if you only have moderate fitness.
Once you get to the lake you can sit down and relax and enjoy the view or go for a walk over to the disappearing waterfall, or go for a swim or do a lap of the lake (that might take a while).
The best part I thought was hearing and watching the avalanches fall at the lake...amazing. Leave yourself about 5 hours to do the walk, have a rest and explore the lake. If you are in a hurry you could get there and back in two and a half hours.
Watch out for the resident carpark Kea!
