After a morning in Milford Sound, this was a great place to stop at on the drive back to Te Anau. The hike is steep and took us about 4 hours (2.5 up, 1.5 down). However it provides a range of different environments (you start in forest and end up on the top in alpine wetlands) and some great views. Take some warm clothes as the the top is quite exposed and windy.

May 2017 We overnighted at Kiosk Creek to make the early cruise on the Sound, which set us up perfectly to stop at The Divide for the afternoon on the way back into Te Anau. Both hubbie and I had walked the Routeburn over 30 years ago, so were looking forward to reliving some of our steps. Back then, finishing the Routeburn at The Divide, as with many walks if you are trying to make transport connections, you tend to rush the last part. This time, we could take our time on this segment of the Routeburn before heading up to Key Summit track. On the way up we stopped to enjoy every view we could and once on top of Key Summit, we took our time to take in the glorious panoramas as the cloud swirled around us. A steady climb, but very manageable for us (age 55-60). Don't rush, do the nature trail as well. As with all the walks we did, the tracks are so well maintained. Traveling in the off season, we rarely encountered many other walkers and savoured having the stunning mountains to ourselves.

We didn't have time to do one of the great walks, but if you allow yourself two days to get from Te Anau to Milford and back you can do some short day walks with spectacular views.

Probably worth allowing more than the recommended 3 hours if its a clear day just because the scenery will have you walking around every corner, going oh wow! and then reaching for your camera.

The walk is steep and there are parts of the track where the track is just a pile of fairly lose rocks. Nothing too intense though.

Take a day pack and chuck in some water, some snacks, your camera, and a few extra (and waterproof) layers just in case the weather changes. We didnt get any rain on the walk but the weather can change quickly in Fiordland.

Park at the Divide (its pretty well signposted) and enjoy the walk!

A beautiful walk up the mountain and back. You can see different types of vegetation from the carpark to the top and you have great views over the surrounding mountains.
