Information

Time: 4 - 5 days

The Rees Dart is quite a strenous walk that's not to be underestimated (see reviews) but the effort and persisant sandflys (take your insect repellent) are well worth it.

Note - The Chinaman's Bluff start point shown on this map is a fair weather access-way. The last part of the road is prone to slips and flood after rain, so you may have to start at Paradise Carpark which will lengthen your walk.

Nice track, good to walk, fantastic views, optional day walk to Cascade Saddle, good campsites at the huts.

I've done a lot of tramping in NZ on formed tracks and unformed routes.

The Dart-Rees was possibly the best I've done. Not like the Routebourne or Kepler where fitness is optional, this one you'll definitely dislike without an average level of fitness. So much variety from the valleys to the saddles. Cattle flat just isn't! and the first day in from the Dart end is the least enjoyable. Persevere though and it just keeps getting better. Cascade Saddle is an absolute must do and the view down the Matukituki Valley is breath-taking. Don't bother staying in the huts as there are plenty of spots to put up a tent and the hut fees add up if you're on a budget.

    Amazing track.

We met not too many people on the track (2 or 3), so not a lot of tourists. Awesome.

Hard track in hard terrain but beautiful scenery.

Huts were fine except the 25 Mile Hut.

    Well worth the hard work.

Don't miss the side trip to Cascade Saddle. Would merit 10/10 but for the sandflies.

    Beautiful scenery.

Huts are very warm and inviting and overall are in excellent condition. Trail is marked great. I think the times from point to point are marked a little shorter than actual, but overall its a great track.

Probably one of the most strenuous tramps I have done, 4 days of up and down with the most breathtaking views from valley floor to the saddle.
