What a ride! Did 3 day canoe from Blazing Paddles. Lost one wooden paddle on day two, found it back on day 3! Especially day 3 (to Pipikiri) is challenging. Trip starts nice and sweet paddling downstream...and ends up with rapids that made us tip over twice...and the river gets deep, wide and fast by that time. But all in all very doable, even for us in our 50s. Just make sure you can swim, keep your lifevest on and tie everything. We lost a hat, watershoes and sunglasses ;) It's a beautiful trip and you'll have time to relax and look around although if you want to make the huts/campground before 6pm you can not linger to long.
Rent a canoe and get going, you will not regret it!
We paddled downstream through beautiful scenery. Bridge to Nowhere walk was worthwhile, some birdlife out there. Felt like three days was enough since variation is not plenty in terms of scenery. We collapsed once in the canoe, since we took the wrong part of the way.
Superb scenery, always worth the effort.
We did the Journey for three days in a canoe and had so much fun! There were not many people on the river, so we were really often completely alone and could enjoy the landscape and the paddling.
3 to 5 day Great Walk, by canoe. Nice landscape but a little monotonous. Need good weather. 3 days were enough (last day quite long because not much current).
Three days of canoeing and enjoying the peaceful nature of the Whanganui River. Met interesting people and learnt a lot about the Maori Culture at the hut's.
We did a three day trip in a quiet and peaceful environment. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed it.

Amazing vegetation, dense bush and lots of green. Really feels like you are in Jurassic Park. I would recommend seeing the Harahurutu Waterfalls as you lie in a green canopy overhanging a 50m cliff. So peaceful!
Perfect for an inexperienced canoeist. Amazing camping and picnic spots. Great spots beside the river (Bridge to Nowhere).

We did a three day canoe. Very good if you need a break from the city. The river and forest around is so wild and quiet. You get to see waterfalls around and mountain goats.
Awesome trip with stunning views, lots of wild goats, beautiful birds and peaceful silence. I would not have done more than three days though.
Did the three day (two nights) tour. Lots of fun on the river, especially the rapids. Also really nice scenery, but three days was definitely enough for me.
Good organisation, heavy climb to the hut on day two, peaceful and varied environment.
Difficult to reach, quite expensive to hire a canoe. All the speedboats with their loud engines kind of ruin the fun. Beautiful landscape though.
Peaceful and scenic trip on the river.
Very peaceful, lots of fun, good for beginners, wonderful scenery, perfect workout, enough space for food in canoes.
Tired and bug bitten but well worth the three days of paddling. Watch out for rats in camp around your food.
Three day trip. Great campsites and helpful staff.
A great walk. We booked the canoe from a company in Ohakune and they drove us to the start point and from the end to the car. Three days in a canoe - amazing!
Fun and amazing waterfalls!
Canoeing was so awesome! If you like water and rafting and kayaking and canoeing then it is a must see! You pass some really ancient bush, totally quiet in the canyons.
One of the best things we have done so far.
YES YES YES!!! 11!!!
One of the best things done in NZ!
Such an adventure.
We thought it would be nice, kayaking down the river for 5 days, but it was AWESOME!
We expected loooooots of paddling, and of course we did paddle a lot, but there were also lots of very exciting and fun rapids and on lots of places some stream to push you a little in the back :).
The campsites were fantastic and the company we rented our double kayak from (Taumaranui Canoe Hire) was soooo nice and the people there sooo helpful!
The Whanganui Journey --> 500% recommended!
A group of us recently completed the Whanganui Journey, 3 days from Whakahoro to Pipiriki. The journey was amazing and the hut wardens welcoming. Definitely a must do!
