This is the closest campsite from Te Anau along the Milford Road. There are small private sites tucked in amongst regenerating beech forest. The camping spot is beside Lake Te Anau and is a great place for picnics and short walks. No fires permitted at any time.

Just loved the place! Close enough to Te Anau (around 25 km) and very quiet and peaceful. You can camp by the lake and the sunset is magical.

Fab spot 20 mins from te anau, phone reception if you stand on the top of a picnic table at the top of the park. Beautiful place to park and walk. Take your air freshener to the drop loos
The best thing is the view. The toilets are disgusting so we didn't use them. We found it quite expensive (13$ pp) just to park a self contained vehicle for a single night. But freedom camping self contained in this area isn't allowed, so we didn't have any other choice. Just to expensive. We have enjoyed much better facilities for free other places.

Was a incredible experience stayed in this place, the lake is amazing an the view on the sunset.
lot of mosquitos, terrible smelling toilet and you have to pay 13$ pp.? We had holiday parks for the same price. but there is no other chance if you want to visit milford sound.

Great DOC site just a short drive out of Te Anau, location is right by the side of the lake which even in March sumons you to go for a dip although I must admit it was not for long, views of lake & mountains surrounding the lake are awesome, you have either open parking in a large car park or you can park amongst the trees in the wooded section as we did which was very nice & secluded & close to the lake, toilets are plentiful however not the best & the two local to us were full of dead flys literally hundreds, but they were serviced & besides the flys clean, I would recommend this as a great site to stay one or two nights it cost 26.00 dollars but I think it was worth it, few sand flys so ointment up with repellant

Great little areas to park on the left - shades and close to a GORGEOUS lake. Non self contained vehicles are welcome. Very private and really beautiful. The mosquitoes and sandflies in the toilets made them practically unusable (hard to pee when mosquitoes are flying up out of the toilet). But we’d stay here again. The bigger toilet near the entrance wasn’t as bad and I’m sure when they clean them there are less bugs. Overall a nice stop for anyone on their way to/from Milford Sound.
Thanks to all the good people working for the NZ Department of Conservation - for all your hard work - making NZ more beautiful, accessable and healthy! Cheers 😍
