The Kidds Bush Reserve Camping Ground is super busy during the holidays an awesome spot with plenty of space to join on in with the locals.

Its away from the main road so it feels like you are in quite an isolated spot. The campsite is alongside the lake in a large grassy area, with lots of shade from beech trees. Walking track nearby. This place gets extremely cold in the winter, so cold that the water pipes all freeze up! Well out of the sandfly zone - wicked.

There is a shelter and a boat ramp here.

Nice Spot directly at Lake Hawea. There's a Hut where you can sit and cook. Water and sinks to do the dishes.

I am there as I write this and leaving my first Ranked review to say how lovely this place is. DoC sites are never bad, and most are good, but this one is a bit special, and is in close contest for best one with the 2 at the top of the Coromandel....Port Jackson or something like that and the one just after it! With Lake Hawea you're talking a 'proper' lake, and have passed many times and am chuffed to have the opportunity to camp next to it.....for 8 dollars per person! 8!!! Best value for money ever! Anyway, lovely views, right on top of Lake, toilets and kitchen type area spic and span, and ranger Sally was lovely. Love seeing the lights of the cars pass by on the main road on the other side of the lake at twilight. No sandflies to speak of on this day. Love it.

Excellent campground right on the lake with beautiful views at one of NZ’s most stunning places, great hike up to Sawyer Burn Hut if you’re feeling energetic for an incredible hike with breathtaking views over Lake Hawea & the close by mountains - hike took us just over 4 hrs return from the campground.

Wonderful area on the lake, plenty of flat options whether you want to be by the lake or more sheltered under trees.

Really beautiful spot by Lake Hawea past some friendly cows on the way in. The DOC ranger on site was super friendly and also could take payments on card which was handy. The toilets were the cleanest out of any doc site I've stayed at. I put my tent up on the lakeside because of the beautiful views but it was pretty exposed and windy so if you're in a tent it's probably better on the grassy area.

Popular with locals so busy we were there Saturday night and it was a bit noisy at night.

Lovely warden told us it would claim down after the weekend and it did we stayed two days went swimming in the lake (yes it was cold) and walked through the wooded trail. It's what the DOC sites are all about.

Toilets very clean.

This is a beautiful camp site. We found a great spot under the trees with views of the lake. Clean toilets and water supply. We saw the most amazing sunset over the lake- the best we saw in our whole month in NZ. Completed the walk up to Sawyer Burn which was steep but great views and straight from the campsite. One of our favourite DOC sites in NZ.

Great spot, the gravel road is in very good shape (watch out for the 1000 bunnies ;)). There is no sign but if you're coming from Wanaka it is a gravel road on the right at the end of the lake. Clean toilet, great views and taps (no drink water). Bring spray for the sand flies!
