The Kidds Bush Reserve Camping Ground is super busy during the holidays an awesome spot with plenty of space to join on in with the locals.
Its away from the main road so it feels like you are in quite an isolated spot. The campsite is alongside the lake in a large grassy area, with lots of shade from beech trees. Walking track nearby. This place gets extremely cold in the winter, so cold that the water pipes all freeze up! Well out of the sandfly zone - wicked.
There is a shelter and a boat ramp here.

Lovely, quiet campsite next to the lake. Was nice and tidy, with a friendly DOC ranger.
Awesome and discreet location. Clean toilets and pristine lake. Kids loved swimming in the lake. Highly recommend just have insect repellent on hand for sand flies.
Simply the best, best, BEST! Feels like the middle of nowhere, right next to the lake, a perfect place to unwind and relax. Great views all around and plenty of space (we were there on a Sunday in December along with only a handful of other campers). Clean flush toilets that looked pretty new. Sheltered sink to do the dishes. Campsites like this one are what made us fall in love with NZ.
Beautiful spot and clean
One of my favourite freedom camping spots during our holiday. Basic very clean toilet. Shady trees. Cheap $8 per person. Great for swimming. Not suitable for large camper vans as the track is very narrow tho we were in a 7 metre Bolero (cheeky) and it handled the dirt road well. Drive very slow going in and out as there is usually cattle on the road.
What an amazing place to camp for the night. Right next to Lake Hawea, couldn't have been better! Basic toilets however covered kitchen with running water which was useful when it rained.
Thanks to all the good people working for the NZ Department of Conservation - for all your hard work - making NZ more beautiful, accessable and healthy! Cheers 😍
