Big camping ground in the middle of nowhere, but it's FREE. No water, some benches and there's only one toilet. The ground it a little "wavy". I can't grade it better because it was the coldest night we had in New Zealand! In the morning our tents were completely frozen :S

This is a great spot for self contained vans to stay the night. There is a toilet and running water but not much else except peace and quiet in the middle of nowhere. There is a box for donations to help maintain the site. The domain is located just a couple of kilometers from the Vulcan Tavern and Blue Lake walk.

What a place! Loads of character, loads of history and almost deserted. It was so quiet that we stayed in the old diggings car park after checking at the pub. Be sure to stop in for a drink and a chat, just so you know how good a pub should be.
Great spot for pictures when the pool is calm. Be lulled to sleep by the sound of banjos.
This is a very secluded, very basic campsite... exactly what we were looking for! Facilities are a tap and a long drop toilet.
The shelter belt is pretty sparse, so expect high winds at this spot. We arrived in the drizzle, and it blew for the three days we stayed here. Hay fever can be an issue in the summer months in this area.
The things we really loved about this spot were 1)There was no one else around 2)The only noises were the wind and sheep 3)sunset 4)The Nearby Vulcan hotel and St Bathan's township.
This is a superb spot if you don't want to have to share a campsite with 100's of other people and you are a fully self reliant camper.
Thanks to all the good people working for the NZ Department of Conservation - for all your hard work - making NZ more beautiful, accessable and healthy! Cheers 😍
