Beautiful camp next to Lake Mahinapua. Clean flush toilets, cooking/dishes shelter with multiple sinks, rubbish and recycling station, even a solar shower! (Though probably a lucky dip to get a hot shower when it's busy!).
Lake is lovely for a kayak and morning sunrise. Nice bush walks around camp.
Weka, falcons and glowworms top it off to make this a definite 10!
A lovely lake with the back drop of the mountains. The camp site is back a little from the lake a large grassy area with plenty of choice where to park. Clean and tidy toilets, solar shower and shelter for kitchen area.
Very few campers (July 2020) Grounds well maintained tho choose site carefully because of wet conditions. Clean flush toilets w/paper, small outside shelter area with cold water and sink. Beautiful lake views and walks through the bush.
Facilities are closed, epic views, peaceful, morning icy swimming is a must!
Excellent campsite. Beautiful walks and rides in the area.
One of our favorite !
This is a gorgeous campsite, right on the shores of the lake. The amenities were clean with flushing toilets. Lovely big communal undercover areas. Mowed grassy and flat camping areas. DOC Campsite, so cost $13 per person, per night.
Excellent doc campsite. Included in the campervan pass and has really good facilities. Flushing toilets, with soap and tp. Even a solar shower but we didn't use so not sure how well it worked. They also have rubbish and recycling bins. One of the best equipped DOC sites we stayed in at this price.
Nice clean toilets. Great place to set up overnight.
We stAyed at this DOC site after reading reviews. Not a massive site, but enough space for choice of spots. Lake itself is nice with mountain backdrop. 10mins from Hokitika. Limited toilet facilities only.
Great place with plenty of space. Nice sunset. Bellbird singing in the early morning
Pretty basic campsite but all we needed with our self-contained van. Flushing toilets! Water! A beautiful walk to the lake. Bugs galore, but they were at every campsite we stayed at.
An amazing campsite if you are lucky enough to be here on a fine early morning!! Took probably the best photos of our trip as the lake was dark and glass and acted like an enormous mirror. 10/10 would stay again.
Really nice spot to camp. Sunrise over the lake was beautiful. Seeing the Weka birds roaming the campsite was cute- we even saw chicks! Clean toilets and lots of room.

BEST SPOT EVER!
December 2018 the price is NZ$ 13 per person. Put cash in envelope at camp or wait for ranger to pay by card. HUGE area to camp. If you have a solar shower, you can use the cubicles to hang it up. Toilets with running water are big and clean. A few drinking water stations around the camp. Good sized area to clean dishes. Benches down by the lake. Great little walks around the area. Glowworms to be seen on the road in/out from the camp to the mainroad. Not so many sandflies this time. Awesome spot. Mahinapua Pub open for public till around 17:00. Weak sound of music for the Kiwi Experience busses parties after that. All in all - GREAT place to stop on the westcoast.
Beautiful place to camp! Great facilities, bring your own solar shower to hang up. The lake was incredible in the morning, check it before the wind comes up. Would recommend to park up here!
$13pp closer to the main road. Rubbish and recycling bins, portable fresh water. Security cameras. Box to put money. A lot of spaces
Would be quite expensive but wet used it with a doc campsite pass. Very nice spot! Showers didn't work maybe because we were in off season.

DOC campsite and free with conservation pass. Large and quiet campsite with nice lake view. There's a pier that is nice for a photo shoot and get into the lake to swim. Basic facilities with flush toilet.
Lake Mahinapua Campsite - Mahinapua Scenic Reserve is open for business… Visit Website …now's your chance to take a closer look.

The view is amazing mostly in the morning. Weka are surrounding so keep your stuff in van or tent
One of the best DOC sites we visited. Only a few other campers there. Toilets were clean and there was water available. The views of the snow capped mountains were fantastic. Short drive through what seemed like a dodgy forest at night was beautiful during the day. 10/10 for views.

Basic DOC site. Was a great stop for us after a long drive through Arthurs Pass from Kaikoura heading to the West Coast..... but we arrived too late to enjoy any views..... We parked near the picnic area. There were at least 5 others there even in winter which was rare to see during our trip at any DOC site. Had the DOC pass so was free for us.

The Lake Mahinapua campsite has a beautiful setting close to the edge of the lake with a one-way road in and another leading out through thick bush. Given a clear morning the sunrise over the lake is superb. The main camping area is a large grassed circle that gets chewed up by the wheels of heavy vehicles in wet weather making deep ruts and mud. A smaller camping area nearby is shaded for the first half of the day by a steep bush covered hill. There are clean flush-toilets and a space to hang a solar-shower as well as a separate covered space for dish washing and possibly food preparation out of the rain. Freshwater and rubbish / recycling are available onsite. A shallow concrete slipway next to the campsite gives easy lake access for small boats & kayaks. Close to the campsite there are a couple of easy bush walks and it is possible to get onto the West Coast cycle trail from the campsite but making this connection requires a couple of kilometres of main-road riding. The camp is very popular and the only downside is the relatively high cost for a DOC site.
Fantastic campground. Plenty of space, beautiful view from the lakefront that is accessible from the campground! As well as it being close to town if you need to get up early for a tour the next day.
Amazing entrance to this place. It was raining and parts of the camp grounds were soft, and some people got stuck. Lovely lake. Magnificent sunrise.
If you have the pass, it's value for money. But if you don't: skip this campsite. It is wet, uneven (OK for a van, not OK for a tent) and there is no shower. Only the possibility to hang a solar shower. The showers are pretty clean, and enough clean water. Nice environment, couple of very easy walks. But nothing special. Good for $8. Not good enough for $13.
Breathtaking view, lot of space for campervans, directly at the lake, huge space for dishwashing ( not attached somewhere beneath the toilets as usual.)
Yes there is a shower with no water. You have to mount you own solar shower, there is no illumination, there are mosquitoes (somehow to be expected near the lakeside).
But to wake up in a scenery like there, just beautiful.
Not quite the lakeside views we had envisaged despite being by a beautiful lake. The drive through rainforest to get to the site was lovely. Toilets, torch needed after dark, and washing up facilities and supposedly a solar shower - not sure where the water was sourced from though! $13 per person with an honesty box. Plenty of areas in which to camp.
Lovely quite site with plenty of room. Clean and well appointed amenities. Very pleasant.
Very well maintained site, with washing bay (3 sinks under shelter), clean toilets and 2 shower blocks, water taps.
Stunning lake view, water was bit warm so we had a swim @ 9:00 PM (still day light).
Nice place. Quite expensive without a shower.
Great spot. DOC run so honesty box applies. Loads of space for campervans.
A beautiful lakeside location with lots of space for many campers. You have to drive through dense forest to get to it so you really feel surrounded by nature. There are flushing toilets but they don't have lights so bring a torch. There are large sinks for use. One of my favourite locations during my trip to NZ!
Great views of the lake and the snowy mountains. Flushing toilets were a plus. Bit cold in winter but the frost was beautiful in the morning.
This was the best DOC campsite we visited, had all the amenities you would want plus more, they even have shower blocks for you to hang up your solar shower, impressive.
Great outdoor cooking shelters, our first sight of one of the local Weka's. The individual rubbish and recycle bins were also very convenient. Only thing we couldn't do was swim as the water was just to cold. The water available from the tap was great, had no sign to say that it was not drinkable so filled up the camper van fresh water with it but boiled anything we drank just in case. We purchased campsite passes prior to our 3 week adventure and this Lake was one of the campsites we were able to use that pass on along with quite a few others. Loved the view etc.
Beautiful spot, the drive in was gorgeous. Lovely walks and the view of the lake amazing.
Can be a bit boggy in areas when it rains
A lovely site, beside the lake. Plenty of open level space for vehicles to park. toilets were clean but basic (bring a torch).
Gorgeous spot, great for a swim when sunny. Lots of space and clean toilets. Would be nice to have some picnic benches or something.
Awesome camping! A lot of space, water supply, clean flushing toilets, garbage dumping, sinks to do your dishes.. One of the best camping spots in New Zealand so far :)
Very popular, so you will struggle to find any privacy. Other reviews say it all in regards to facilities. Beautiful spot, but only a 8 because of loud campers.
Whilst this spot can get busy there is plenty of space. There are no shower facilities here unless you have your own solar heated water bag. In that case, there are private facilities in which you can hang your bag for a shower. A great idea! The road in is narrow, but don't fear, it's one way. A great place to stay not too far away from Greymouth and Hokitika.
Maria and Grace
Large DOC campground, warm swimming, sheltered, nice walks, great when weather allows.
Really cool. Many places but many people for a Saturday night so we were all very close. Much shade. View of the lake is beautiful. The DOC staff come in at 8 am on the Sunday morning. Toilets are clean.
This is the worst night's sleep we've had so far. Yes it's $6 each, but everyone seems to know it and the place gets rammed. Past reviews comment highly on the toilets but when we arrived they were in a bad way and had no lighting. The water states it should be boiled, and we killed about 100 mosquitos throughout the night. Having come from a beautiful community-run campsite near Arthur's Pass the night before at $5 each, this was an extreme drop in cleanliness and comfort.
Another "don't miss" campsite! Worth every dollar! $6 per person.
Big campsite, close to Hokitika. Lake is pleasant but not great for swimming, good facilities. New cooking shelters and solar shower cubicles. Toilets are a bit old, but adequate & flush toilets.
Beautiful campsite. Absolutely loved it, spacious, good facilities and clean toilets A++
A great campsite, in a beautiful situation. Beware if wet as it gets a bit boggy in areas. Facilities are good, but once the solar showers are finished it will definitely get a 10/10. Excellent value for money.
Beautiful camping, located beside a great lake.
It has bathroom and a shelter for cooking, and cubics to hang solar showers.
No lights at night. Everything clean and tidy. $6 per person.
Quiet, secluded, safe and spacious - relaxing views to lake and sufficient amenities. A great spot for a nights stop over.
Such a good site, really spacious but does get busy. We had a few problem with noise from other guests and the DOC guard seemed to be friends with them which made complaining difficult so our advice is choose your spot wisely. You can't wash with shampoo/soap in the lake but there is a cabin for solar showers (BYO) and flushing toilets which were a little grubby but didn't smell. All up a good site for $6/pp
Very good DOC campsite for a really good price - 6$. The toilets are clean and in good state. Plenty of space to camp and beautiful lake
Fantastic spacious area with all the facilities you need (toilets, taps with sinks, rubbish bins and there is even a solar shower). Scenery wasn't as stunning as NZ usually is but I guess you cant drool over mountains all the time.
Stayed here on a Friday night before a long weekend. Stunningly beautiful scenery, a very tranquil spot to set up camp. Get there early, drive past the camp site and set up camp on the beach of the lake itself. There's only room for a few campers by the lake, and your experience will be that bit more special. Very tidy and clean campsite.
Nice place, large grassy area next to the lake. Lakeview on a few lots only. Water toilets clean and even some soap to wash hands. There is a children's camp nearby and they swim in the lake. May substitute a shower for those who are on freedom camping for longer time. No soap to use in the lake of course. Main road far away, so little traffic noise only. Well worth the $6PP. Cant get much better for a DOC.
Clean toilets! Couple of 100m away to the highway, a lot of spaces, nice views of the lake, but difficult to swim because there is a lot of weed in the water, drinking water, silence, freedom camping.
Clean toilets, free water.
Busy DOC campsite 9km south of Hokitika. Flush toilets, cooking shelter and cubicles for showers - bring your own solar shower. Clean and tidy. Lake is lovely.
Our first experience of a DOC site and we loved it! Clean, flushing toilets, lovely lake side setting and plenty of space to choose a pitch away from the main road. There was also an undercover area to cook and wash up which was amazing as it rained hard the evening we got there!
Very good! Lovely lake view and plenty of space. Good public toilets and even a room to have a solar shower.
Great location, only 9 km from Hokitika. Wonderful amenities and very clean!! The lake is awesome, quite warm water!! Great spot.
Nice spot. Toilets ok. Sand flies weren't that bad but the Mosquitos were brutal!
Lovely DOC site, water taps, plenty of space. Clean toilets with light at night.
New and very clean toilet. Lots of green space to park and a nice lake to swim.
Fabulous site, clean bathroom, well serviced site, fantastic!
Sarah Jane O'Reilly
Very spacious, good clean water, lovely lake, no sandflies.
Clean facilities, beautiful scenery, running water, clear signage, $6 per person.
$6 per person, favourite campground, go swimming in the lake - it is not too cold and is super refreshing.
A big campsite managed by the DOC, close to the lake.
Yeah! If you've seen this you never want to go to an ordinary camping ground again!
Nice well kept meadow, nice secluded bay, easy acces to beach, good facilities.
Beautiful place near the lake-good picnic area
Beautiful place near the lake, big and grassy, Clean toilet.
Beautiful site, just happened to have Mister Grumpy next door about fifty yards away, who would run his Generator if anyone got close.
Great walks there. awesome place
Perfect setting, good facilities, very nice walks.
Nice location, good facilities.
Lake Mahinapua Campsite - Mahinapua Scenic Reserve is open for business… Visit Website …now's your chance to take a closer look.
Lots of space. Clean and well maintained toilets. Nice lake views with history of paddle boats on the lake, Friendly Weka's to great you.
Lovely camp at a quiet lake, good facilities and grounds close to Hokitika and affordable.
Nice, clean, next to the lake, lots of space.
Great little spot set behind the lake. Plenty of space to fina quiet spot. Nice walks and fact boards etc informative. Little jetty out into the lake perfect for watching the spectacular sunrise....all for $6pp!
Phil & Laura
An excellent campsite. Lots of space in a field adjacent to, but separate from the lake. Good facilities, clean and well maintained. Full recycling facilities too. We thought the lake was beautiful, set away from the main site. Some interesting fact boards about the local history, the original lake steamer (what remains of it) is set into a display. Several short bush walks easily accessible.
Splendid campsite near Hokitika with great facilities, including rubbish collection.
GREAT and beautiful place to stop for the night and very affordable. Right on a lake with plenty of room. Make sure and print out the DOC pamphlet before you go -- it has all the DOC sites by north/south islands. A large document to print BUT well worth it.
For a DOC campsite, this was fantastic, especially considering it was the same price ($6 pp) as Lake Paringa.
The toilets were proper - not the usually hole in the ground with a seat on standard DOC fare.
Sunset was beautiful, but sunrise was awesome, amazing seeing the sun come up over the mountains across the lake, and some beautiful photos of the jetty.
Low costs - good and very clean washing facilities, lots of space.
Bryan & Ineke Beck
Tranquil, good ammenities, good camping area for self contained vehicles.
Stayed one night here...nice and peaceful. Lake is beautiful on a still morning...no problem with sandflies or mozzies. Clean facilities and quite sheltered.
Food for fishing. Good views. Clean toilets. Good flat sites to camp.
Keely & Mark Haynes
Excellent site - loads of space, walks (short and long) around lake and surrounds.
Directly at the lake, beautiful location.
Beautiful location. Do not do Swimmers Beach walk as it is crap.
Great spot (feel the serenity), lake warm, toilets & drinking water superb. Maybe cold showers at least would be good.
Don't forget mosquito repellent! Amazing location by beautiful lake. Great for swimming in summer. Nice bush walks. DOC site.
If there is no shower it is very nice to have a lake and nice weather. You feel the nature but there is a toilet, you are alone, but there are a few other people
Beautiful spot. Excellent value for money.
