Fantastic DOC ground. Lots of places to camp. Flush toilets. Wood fired pizza oven. Not a lot of dead wood around so if you can, bring some with you. Very nice spot. LOTS of sandflies...be prepared for the lil buggers.
Best. Place. Ever. The tough parts: car or camper camping is hard, because there are a few nice sites, and then some sadder out of the way gravel lots. But: if you don’t mind a carry, then the down creek plain is amazing. And if you get super lucky like us, and park up beside the fireplace and pizza oven, then you’re on a beautiful creek with lots to do. Pan for gold, watch the diehards sluicing, explore the creek as far as you like, collect all the driftwood you can and make pizza (true story, amazing). And despite being close to Reefton and super popular, everyone is nice and it’s a great spots. Toilets a boardwalk into the trees away from the camp and rubbish facilities cleared by nice DOC people. 100.
Marvellous very kiwi. History, river, flat, and well separated sites. Great even in a west coast shower. Agree, bring a torch for the toilet.
We had a great time at this spot. There are toilets, running river where we panned for gold successfully, there is a brick fire place and pizza oven which we did not use, working toilets and trees to camps amongst. We thoroughly enjoyed this spot and would recommend, however Sandflies were an absolute nightmare So come prepared!! $8 per night per person.
Very quiet, about a km down a gravel road from the highway. Nicely sited beside a lovely little river.
Quiet, hidden place in the forest next to the river. Secure stations for making a barbecue. Lots of sandflies!
Nice spot on a creek, lots of sandflies but does not have bathroom facilities.
Great little doc campsite with seperate areas for campers. Frequented by locals who go gold panning. Good toilet facilities. Located not far from Reefton
love this place
Great camping spot and again thanks to DOCS. We saw two guys with heaps of gold specs from the beautiful didymo infected creek, well done. Wekas are so cute - we saw chicks as well. Clean sites and good clean toilet. Just put on some insect repellent for the sand flies.

Lovely camping spot, well maintained and very tidy. Plenty of scope for tenters and some amazingly well built fireplaces including a pizza oven! Flush toilets and separate "parking bays" for vans. An open sided rain shelter would be a worthwhile addition. Sandflies are a given on the West Coast, get used to them or go somewhere else.
Slab Hut Creek was a lovely spot. We were a bit hesitant about going there as we had read other reviews saying that sandflies was a major problem there, and having just spent a night at Bruce Bay, sandflies was a no go for us. As it turned out, there were hardly any sandflies, but a very lovely and quiet campsite with a number of very curious wekas that were almost jumping into our camper :-) Toilets were fine.
What a lovely spot! Few Kiwi families come to spend the holidays here with their offspring, and should there be no sandflies we would have done the same. Reefton is a charming little town, not to be skipped. (-1 for the flies)

Probably a great spot during summer but was a bit creepy in the winter when you arrive after dark. Creek very noisy but beautiful night-sky. Flushable toilets $5<< p.p.p.n. Water tap available
Beaut we spot just on down from Reefton about 10 mins drive. Class spot beside the creek, has places to light fire, clean toilets and lots of space for campers and cars. Only $5 per person.
Located on a river, water, toilet, fireplaces - really cosy.
V. nice and well maintained campground - right next to the river and the forest - some nice walks from the campground, ten minute drive from Reefton. Clean toilets and very cheap ($5 pp).
Very nice site. A bit scarred at the moment (April 2013) as a digger has been in to extend the area for large campers but it will be all the better for it in the long run. Toilets lack natural light which is a bit inconvenient (head torch handy). There are barbeque/fire places provided but there is not much deadwood to burn so best to bring some if possible. Make sure you go and say hello to the The Old Timers at Bearded Mining Company in Reefton...
Toilets (with water flush) next to a creek, a lot of trees, barbecue possible.
Amazing old huts, bearded old guys cooking scones. Great to chat and look at the 'old stuff' hanging around.
Great - and super cheap - DoC site right on the river bank. There was an added sense of adventure as we camped here in the middle of a huge storm, so the river was a raging (if perfectly safe) torrent.
Good place near the river with gold prospectors. Paid $6.
For $5 a nice quiet place near the creek.
Heaps of birds and a sweet near to roadside camp.
Nice location and good value. Be prepared for sandflies! Our stay was unfortunately let down by the mess left by other other campers.
