NOTE - SUMMER SEASON 2020
Freedom Camping in Golden Bay has become very popular and many free sites are regularly full. Be prepared to stay in a local Holiday Park or DOC campsite, which generally have more space. Thanks and respect from Rankers and the local Golden Bay rangers :)
A very basic campsite next to the Cobb River underneath the trees. This is an area popular with fishermen and this part of the river has a great swimming hole.
Basic facilities, there is just a toilet, water is collected from a stream. There are some fire pits, but please abide by the seasonal fire ban rules.
This site is quite hard to find, it's about 5km from the main Takaka Rd heading towards the Cobb Dam, on the right hand side of the road. Just before a warning sign; '26km narrow winding road'. Enjoy.

This is not an especially nice place to stay. It felt eerie from the first moment we pulled in, but we were quite tired and spent some time looking for it. No toilets. No rubbish bins, but garbage and bottles piled everywhere. Long grass and trees that cause trouble for large vehicles. Sandflies by the swarms - being outside by the river was quite uncomfortable. We stayed the night, but didn't linger the next day. A few tourist campers like us, but many people took one look and drove off. The rest of the campers were partying with loud music, or people who lived there long-term/permanently. If freedom camping used to look like this in NZ, dirty and disrespectful, I now understand why heavy regulations are in effect. I would not recommend it, nor would I stay here again. After three weeks on the North and South Island, this was our least favorite site. Free is not always worth it.

Basic campsite (free), very long road to access. Lots of open space, lots of wind. Some sandflies in the evening.

Absolutely filthy campsite, litter scattered about everywhere. There is old furniture that looks like it's been dumped out here and the toilet is destroyed and cannot be used. Would not recommend driving out of your way to get to this site. Very unwelcoming and feels very weird to be at.
Very dirty and literally full of scary gypsies and insects. The river looks nice for a morning swim, but it's also very loud. We ended up driving back to Takaka and paying for a decent campground.
Toilets are destroyed. Sandfly still here:-) seems like nobody has been here for ages..still quiet place:-)
Its shame about the toilets because we enjoyed our stay.
Free, quiet camp right beside the Cobb River, with a long drop toilet. Check condition of track before driving in off the road, as was a bit rough and boggy in places. Someone forgot their gumboots and socks!
Very nice Blue Pool but there is many sandflies.
Free campground with toilet. It was great to wake up just next to the river. I was hoping it was not that cold!
