Second time we have stayed there, it’s lovely, we parked right next to the river on a non powered site for two nights, the kitchens, toilets & showers spotless, even a washing machine and dryer. Quite a few sand flies though.
We stayed on a powered site with our campervan, but this was in a separate area to the main campsite and had no facilities other than a toilet and shower which were quite open so were absolutely freezing. Didn't feel like a paid-for campsite apart from having power, we stayed in better areas when freedom camping. Quite disappointed overall. But close to nice walks and impressive scenery
Best campersite ever. The best we were in our 14 days in Campervan. Incredible beautiful and very nice people. At night you can visit a glew world waterfall, and experience that is really unique! I fall in love with this place.
It was a total ripoff. We arrive in the afternoon and the owner told us he only had a powered campsite. With our little trailer we can’t use power but as we were traveling with a baby we didn’t wanna drive on. But then we saw the campsite. I is just a parking lot with gravel in the bush next to the road. No where to sit or crawl around for the baby. The powers campsite have nothing to do with the actual campground. It’s a 15minute walk there. You didn’t have access to any of the facilities. As we complained the owner didn’t seem very interested. We went to the campground and saw a lot of space and more and more people coming. The owner only wanted to make the most money to squeeze es many tents as possible on the small lawn area. Please don’t go there. It’s all about making money out of this beautiful place. It’s such a pity.
Nice site right by the river where you can swim in a calm spot, or drift out into the mild current. Sites are assigned by the DoC manager at the café, so maybe have a look round so you can tell them which sites you want.
Hot showers are free, kitchen and toilets very clean, nice decked area with tables inside and outside.
Couple of tracks around, did the waterfalls one; waterfall 1 bit dull but waterfall 2 is ok and if you are extra keen you can take a little dip/cold shower.
Seemed a bit expensive at $18pp but maybe that's the going rate up these ways.
Quite expensive in my opinion. But we had a very idyllic site down by the river.
One of the great experiences in non powered campervan sites. We stayed on a grassy terrace right beside the river, site well maintained and groomed. River noise overnight was terrific - it rained heavily during the night, and the river doubled in volume! The walks are wonderful, part of the circle track is a part of Te Araroa, the walking trail that goes the length of the country (their website, teararoa.co.nz, offers downloadable maps and Trail guides, well worth the download)
Absolutely lovely campsite. Beautiful surroundings and plenty of space.
The (unpowered) campervan spots are in pairs divided by big trees and hedges so you only have one neighbour (we had none at all). Great for a feeling of privacy. There is loads of space all around the site so even if it was full I’m pretty sure you’d have all the space you could need.
There are also spots right by the river - these seemed to be the most popular and were full by the time we arrived at around 6. They are a bit smaller but have a lovely view.
The facilities are good too - good size kitchen with space to eat inside and outside, sinks for laundry plus a washing machine/dryer, nice warm showers with unlimited hot water and plenty of space.
There is a DOC cafe at the entrance (5 minutes walk from the camping section) which had nice food for lunch and good coffee.
Note: other reviews mention that the powered sites are in a less nice location with worse facilities so we didn’t try them - we didn’t see them at all so I can’t comment.
Overall, this is the sort of campsite it is worth going out of your way to stay at. I really have nothing bad to say about it at all.
Good site and great for swimming. Kitchen functional and clean - showers hot and powerful.
I have only given 7 because the powered sites were over the bridge and detached from the main campsite. The only facilities here were the electric hook up and a sort of portakabin with one toilet and one toilet/shower. If someone was in the shower, anyone in the toilet next door got wet feet. There was a code number to enter on the doors for access. The numbers were very small, so people needing reading glasses had to carry them there to get in. I left my glasses inside and realised straight away, but couldn't see to get back in! By the time I did, there was another pair there as well! It was a lovely area, well shaded, but some of the bays were a bit small for larger vans. The unpowered site was a lot better - much bigger, but with plenty of space. Good showers and kitchen. Right next to the river (not a lot of water when we were there, but flood and evacuation notices tell their own story). Good shop and lovely cafe. The public car park was very busy, but the campsite was like a little oasis. The river had many beautiful swimming pools and was remarkably warm, and some good walking paths. Great place to stay. If facilities had been better for powered sites would have given 10.
The location is beautiful. The facilities remind me of a DOC hut and has very little facilities in the kitchen. It's a damp campground. The cost is at the high end for a campground.
Lovely site in a lovely place. Deep pools in the river for swimming, not too keen in October though. Unpowered sites are along the river, just pick your own spot so feels nice and informal. Extremely clean facilities and hot showers. Some nice bush walks around, not spectacular but nice to do. Waterfalls are quite small but pleasant, Trig K walk is through the bush but a very good view West at the top.
Wow! This DOC campsite is amazing - the staff were friendly and gave us codes to access both powered and non-powered sites. We had booked the powered site and were reluctant to stay in the non-powered site (as offered to us by the staff there) due to the cold and the need for heater in the van. So they allowed us to use the facility at the non-powered sites. Kitchen was tidy and clean - no utensils or pots and pans, only gas hobs (no power points) and sinks. Toilets were clean as well both in the powered and non-powered. Laundry facility at the non-powered site and a laundry sink. Only 2 toilets in the powered-sites (one of which has a shower with amazing hot water!). No views in the powered site but great views in the non-powered site - so walked down to the river (some sandflies about) and then another walk up towards the waterfall. Spotted some glow worm strands on the Circle track the next morning so should have gone out for a night walk... Poor wifi connection - but who needs it when you have amazing bird song to wake up to in the morning! Hope to be back again, thanks Pelorus team!
Excellent site with superbly manacured grounds. Facilities are excellent and immaculate. I accidentally left my phone in the coffee shop and they happily forwarded it on to me down the line ( which I really appreciate thank you) The owners are so friendly and I can't recommend this place enough. If you can go without power I suggest you do without as the powered sites are ordinary.

Best DOC site we have being to yet. Clean bath rooms with showers and flush toilets. Helpful staff who also gave us a tip for some glow worm sightseeing at night. The kids loved this night expedition. Lovely cafe with fresh home made pies. s. Unpowered sites have the best lookouts onto the river and easy access. Easy walk with kids to the 2 nearby waterfalls. On the down side the showers were lukewarm at best but that didn't put us of to extend our stay to 2 night. Would give it a 10/10 if it wasn't for the showers.

Arrived after hours and friendly manager helped with check in. Separate powered sites with only 2 toilets but unlimited hot showers, separated from kitchen and other facilities, no access to the river. We were the only one in the whole campground early August. No wifi and weak connection. Paid $36 for 2 pax for a powered site. Went over for the unpowered site areas to have a look. Stunning place, would be giving a 10/10 if I stay there. Amazing view at Pelorus River, great kitchen and toilet facilities. Well maintained and beautiful. There are some walks to the waterfall or forest, only if we have time. Take unpowered site if you visit here. Also the cafe looks great, give it a try if you can.
Nice, great views.
Stayed at this great DOC campground with great view of the river. The walks are great. Done a 4 hour hike with our little baby, very steep and lots of rain but VERY good.
Peaceful and spacious with good facilities. Friendly and very helpful staff. Cafe is good too. Part of the site might be closed off at times of heavy rain.
Save up to 70% on campsite fees! Support conservation and experience the natural beauty of NZ. 78 Department of Conservation campsites, one convenient pass.
They think outside of the box! We contacted this site at Pelorus Bridge just prior to loading onboard the interIslander ferry from Wellington to Picton. Th last ferry is at 5.00pm getting into Picton at 8.30pm. There was no issue with getting into the grounds late, they have a separate section just over the bridge for late arrivals. Powered sites, very clean toilets and hot, showers included in a reasonable price. Add that to friendly and accommodating and you have nigh on perfect.
A beautiful setting near the river. Good facilities - clean kitchen. Toilets and showers decent too. Owner very helpful - we snapped a tent pole on arrival and he helped us fix it to last the night at least. Lots of flies.

The powered sites DON'T have any views whatsoever, in fact, they feel claustrophobic. We changed our spot to a non-powered one, which is on the other side of the river. Here, the campsite is amazing with very nice facilities. Definitely recommended, good views.

Get here earlier for a scenic spot. Hot showers. DOC luxury with breathtaking scenery. Good facilities.
Nice walk, about two hours return to a misty place.
A beautiful setting beside a gorgeous river. We loved hearing the birds at dusk and swimming near the great kitchen building. Don't miss it.
We stayed at Pelorus Bridge for one night on 06.02.2016 at a powered site, which wasn't at the main campground but on the other side of the river. It's mostly hard sites and some powered grass sites for tents. There is only one shower and two toilets (one in the same room as the shower) but we never had to wait for a toilet/shower and they were quite new and clean. There is no kitchen at this part of the campground, which was ok for us as we were travelling in a campervan with kitchen on board.
The reception is at Pelorus Bridge Cafe close to the main campground where some walking tracks along the river start and you can even swim in the river. It was one of the best campgrounds of our three weeks trip on south and north island.
Nice little cafe in the forest near the bridge. Serves good coffee and great snacks. Starting point for some nice walks through the forest. Interesting information about the endangered bats in the area. The campsite and facilities also looked excellent.
Nice, good facilities, we enjoyed the hot shower.
Beautiful setting, with beautiful walks. A little expensive compared to the proposed facilities (Summary kitchen, limited hot water): $16 / person.
We came here tired and hungry after the ferry ride from the north island. We for once didn't have enough cash to pay our one night stay, but we thought it would work anyway. But the manager made a big deal out of it and was really rude, after a while speaking to us like we were babies he agreed to go 3 m away and make the card transaction in the big cafeteria. Nice facilities though.
Beautiful spot by a clear river that definitely merits a swim! 2 toilets and 2 showers each (men's/women's) that are clean and well-maintained. Peaceful the night we stayed - we arrived at 8pm and still got pitch 40, which is right by the river and really secluded and picturesque. Sandy ground but fine for pitching. The inquisitive kiwi birds that peck around your tent are lovely. Very few flies (we stayed end Feb). Highly recommended!
Disappointed, because it was holiday weekend, we could only get powered site on opposite of river and we were there early. Very small pitch almost overwhelmed with vegetation, no view, and only one toilet and one shower to serve all powered pitches. Was 30$ for 2 and not good value for money.
Very clean facilities. Right next to the Pelorus bridge where swimming is must do.
Excellent value for money. Modern, purpose-built facility with great showers (the best I've used on SI) which were very welcome after doing the Trig K walk. Arrived with intention of taking a powered site but was encouraged by visitor centre to take one of the unpowered sites which have the best spots by the river - glad I did. Beautiful setting.
Stayed one night in a campervan on our way to the ferry at Picton (about an 1hr away so quite convenient). A beautiful site by the river - would recommend the sites on the riverbank itself. Very clean, modern facilities, hot showers and fantastic views.
Very good DOC camping ground with a beautiful river for a swim, very clean toilets and showers, big kitchen with much space, $12 per person a night with a hot shower.
Clean and nice, comfortable place. Beautiful scenes and tracks!
Access savings worth hundreds of $$ on Top Ranked NZ Accommodation and Activities for just $1 per day.
We paid $12 per person, but we got hot showers, clean toilets and a kitchen to make our dinner. Everything was clean and the place is beautiful. Walking tracks are nice and easy walks! Also the opportunity to get power!
Beautiful setting and great facilities but expensive for an unpowered site.
Pleasant spot with great showers ,bring the repellant .
Very, very busy, however unpowered sites are nice. Go for a walk down to the river. Good facilities and hot showers.
Avoid the powered sites - it is the unpowered sites with the view! Good, clean facilities.
One of the best camping ground I stayed in NZ.
Close to the road but very quiet. And really at the start of fantastic walks.
Facilities are modern, clean and tidy (huge kitchen, hot showers,...).
This is a DOC site and staff was very friendly and helpful. The price was $25 for 2 people, unpowered site.
We were there in August 2014, and the only ones in the site. But I can easily imagine it gets full during summer.
Fantastic campsite. nice location and equipment. Hot shower for free. Good small track from camp.
Good, cheap, nice and sparce, plenty of bush around and bush walks.
Very modern, nice location, nice walks. Beautiful but dirty showers full of mud and hair and no broom to sweep it clean.
Very nice, informative, fantastic views (for non-powered sites). No dump or water for campervans,
Great stop along the way after you arrive from the morning ferry. Very easy to get lunch or supplies in Picton, drive the Queen Charlotte sound road and arrive in plenty of time to enjoy the small river that runs through the area. Even in winter when we visited.
The camp cafe with coffee is also nice in the morning.
Very clean and well maintained facilities.
Very clean, well serviced DOC camp. Nice river to swim, great walking tracks and birdlife. Hospitality great.
Lovely site, peaceful and good walking track and beautiful river for swimming.
We really enjoyed this camping ground. Hot showers and real toilets not chemical toilets (don't get me wrong I have nothing against chemical toilets but we came across some on our trip that where full and needed emptying badly) we stayed in the powered sites and it was lovely in that camping ground we also walked down to the unpowered sites and that area was just as beautiful just don't go there if you have a long vehicle as it is a little tight and it is a single track leading into it. But it is right on the river and the walking tracks around the area are also great
Excellent, scenic location, river of the Hobbit next to it, good facilities and service, but $12 a bit too much.
this is the nicest doc site of all! does get muddy.
$12 per person, clean, I can go swimming, great tracks, restaurant more a kiosk with kitchen.
6 star camp ground, facilities state of the art, common eating area above the river will leave you speechless, swimming holes, fantastic walks, hosts very welcoming.
Brilliant campsite, really good facilities. Non-powered site is much nicer than powered area. Had the riverside view to ourselves! Watch out for the sandflies!!!
Ok there is a reason for the mixed reviews of this site. There are two sites. The powered and unpowered are separate. Even though we ideally would have liked power we were advised to take unpowered.
Great choice. Fantastic location and great modern facilities. That's why you have different reviews here.
Our favourite site so far.
Beautiful camp site, good clean facilities
Helene & Peter
Kitchen, toilets and hot showers available and all clean. Beautiful location next to the river with nice spots to swim. Nonpowered sites are definitely the ones to go for since they are a lot nicer!
Our first encounter with the notorious sandflies......
One of our favorite campsites of the whole 7 weeks in New Zealand. One side of the river has powered sites and is not all that nice but they have a great toilet complete with a shower. The other side of the river is absolutely drop dead gorgeous. A fantastic kitchen, laundry and toilet/shower facility but does not have electrical hook-ups. There are lots of sites with some right on the river. Large kahikatea trees dominate the camping area. Fantastic walking trails and large totara trees. Campground was taken over for a month or so during the filming of "The Hobbit" as some scenes were filmed here. There is a wonderful little cafe where you can get baked goods and tasty treats.
Excellent facilities, lovely setting by the river.
Travelling in campervan. Stayed on Kahikatea side with full amenities. New and very clean facilities. Great views of river. Quiet and peaceful location. Lovely walks in area. Sites can get boggy after rain.
Good shower, great place!!
DOC $12, nice with forest and river, hot shower.
Cheap camp with all amenities (showers, laundry....) and nice views of a river.
Updated grounds and modern design. Very clean, well kept. Hot showers and laundry sinks, clothes line and big clean kitchen and a beautiful clear river to swim in. $12.50 each.
Beautiful campsite, HUGE kahikatea trees, greattt facilities, awesome spots to pitch yr tent and of course the best swimming in the river right next to the camping. Some nice walks around too.
Only minus: Because we got so spoiled with all those 6$-sites and free sites, this one seemed suddenly very expensive (12$/person)
Andre and Marina
It is a nice scenic DOC campsite with nice and clean facilities. HOT TIP: You should walk by night to the first waterfall (20 min) and enjoy the beautiful glowworms.
Gary and Jen
Very nice clean facilities but quite expensive for a non-powered camping site.
Phil & Laura
This one scores a 10. Excellent facilities, cooking area, loo' and hot showers for a reasonable DOC sum. The river was a joy to swim in, and a 1 hour walk into the glorious bush gives you another fine waterfall and pool in which to swim.
Beautiful setting in forest next to river. Quiet, river swimming in deep pools, facilities immaculate.
Wonderful location and maintenance. Well equipped, nice cafe.
New showers and toilet and power for $20 for two people.
Beautiful place, plus we had the campground all to ourselves.
Our second favourite campsite, missed out on first place due to the flies which were abundant and persistent :(
Having said that the cafe and staff were excellent as was the non-powered campsite which is nestled in the trees right by the river. The facilities are brand new and the powered sites (which aren't by the river) are in the process of being renovated.
There are loads of walks directly from the campsite - the two waterfalls walk is definitely worth doing. Shame about the damn flies but a brilliant campsite none the less.
Awesome place. One big spot at the Pelorus river with beutiful grass, bright new toilets with hot and free shower, modern kitchen cooker and free gas. And really nice guy for a camp manager who told us camp is 10 minutes from place where the Hobbit was filmed. All of that for 10 dollars per person.
Basic campsite, cheap, great location and nice cafe with great self made baked stuff.
Nice campsite, beautiful with the river for a cool swim after a hot day.
Beautiful location, superb facilities.
Beautiful setting but lacks facilities - though I noticed they are building new facilities. Once up and running would be a #9 (10 if the wasps would bugger off!).
One of the best campsite I've ever seen!
The facilities are brand new and super clean. The showers are hot and the kitchen is big. Only 10$ pp, really worth it for the view and the facilities.
Many tracks around for hiking and a cold but beautiful stream nearby. Will come back :)
Good basic campsite. Cost $10.50pp. Also has hot showers.
great campground with great facilities (gas burners, HOT water, good toilets). Lots of swimming holes to choose from along the river, and some nice walks amongst the forest adjacent. Only downside was construction of new amenities block was a bit noisy. Be great when it's complete.
Helen and Graham
Poor facilities, overpriced for amenities.
Although busy with the Caravan Club when we stayed, this is a very scenic campsite with all amenities. Several short pleasant walks lead to waterfalls.
Great location next to river very peaceful. Shower block a bit dated but new one under construction.
Peaceful, beautiful scenery, well-priced, friendly administrator. Would be such a shame for DOC campgrounds to be privatised - strongly oppose this move.
Quiet, inexpensive, lovely setting next to the Pelorus river. Good walks.
Clean, cheap, good walks, Quiet, good kitchen & showers - maybe better with BBQ?
Beautiful spot near a river. Good facilities, cheap.
Beautiful, you can swim in the river and it's very wild in the middle of the nature.
HOT water, beautifully kept, friendly manager and free glow worms, 15min walk off site on clear forest track.
Good site next to river, nice walks in surrounding
