Very good place to stay! All it's very clean! Very nice hot shower! In the kitchen you can find a fridge, a microwave, a kettle, a bread toaster and some cookwares. We paid 10 p/p for unpowered zone, that's so good for a night and a hot shower! Really recommended!

Looks like they've had problems with the main structure, an no plans to reopen it so you're left with a dinky little shed with fridge etc, and a tiny little box with a shower and toilet in it. Beautiful views though half the sites pool water in the rain, so if tenting be sure to be on an incline.

Unpowered $10pp

Currently under renovation so only two powered sites available and ten non powered. Kitchen is microwave kettle and toaster and no laundry or oven/stove while the building is being built(?). Toilets and showers are nice and clean and the animals and views are gorgeous!

Second time here. Again a pleasure. Peace and quiet with chicken around the campervan. Clean toilet and shower facilities, kitchen is being renewed. Café and restaurant The Brown Trout is nearby. Stayed one night end november.

Lovely place but not straightforward to find - it's quite far back from the main road with no signposts or signs at the campsite itself. Check-in was a bit confusing as it wasn't very obvious whether pitches were already booked or were available. There was no one on site so you have to park up and check the guestbook in the laundry to see whether there are pitches free. You also pay here in an honesty box. Three of the powered sites were reserved for people staying in the unpowered sites (as each powered site had a small shower/toilet unit, but the unpowered had nothing otherwise).
Shower units were nice - they were fairly clean but none had lighting that worked, one had a broken lock (says on the outside of the door to knock first), and one had no hot water.
The light in the laundry room also didn't work (so bring your own lights!!) but there was a clean, working fridge/freezer and a cold-water washer plus a line to dry clothes.
Lots of greenery around the campsite with chickens, alpacas and goats to greet you in the morning.
Overall I would recommend this campsite, it is a sweet little gem but I think it's in need of a little TLC and don't forget to bring a light!!

Good spot, just off the road but pleasantly quiet. Simple but good facilities in a great location for sunsets & sunrise. Good showers & laundry. Look out for the over friendly chickens 😀

Pleasantly surprised by this stop with our campervan! Expected just a place off the side of the road but we're treated to a nice spot tucked off the highway with a great sunset, private bathroom including shower, and a few animals (alpalcas, goat, horse, chickens). Free washer (bring your soap) and BBQ use. Campsites looked a little more cramped and it did fill up towards the night but campervan power site was spacious and private

Lack of options for free camp in the area but we really enjoyed our stay here. Really well kept site. 12.50$pp unpowered, free to use sink, bbq, flush toilet, hot shower (very). Space to hang washing and friendly owners. Town has a couple of cafes/bars, lady in first one v friendly and we enjoyed a good cider in the sun.

$12.50 for an unpowered site via an honesty box. There was only one other campervan present when I stayed and it was perfect after the bustle of Milford. No sandflies, chickens scratching about your door, and quiet. There is a single shared toilet/shower for the unpowered sites but it wasn't a problem with only three people there. No kitchen facilities though there is a hot water kettle and a cold water washer. There is technically space for ten unpowered campervans but that would be packing it in and i cannot imagine that would actually work. 4-5 powered sites across the way that each get their own toilet/shower combo. Nice little place to spend the night. Be on the lookout for the sign though as Athol has all of two roads i think.

Note that this place apparently closes to campervans in winter. We just tried to stay here but just found a sign saying, Closed no camping during winter. Can’t comment on the site as we couldn’t stay.

Arrived late and in the dark so it was a bit difficult to find and once we did it was difficult to work out if it was closed or not.
There are 'ensuite' shower and toilet blocks but when we got there they were locked and the water had been shut off. This was reflected in the price but wasnt in the campsite info so not being able to shower was a bit annoying.
Location was really pretty and perfect for a stop off between Milford and Queenstown.

We had a powered site. Only a small camp ground so might pay to book ahead. Individual ensuites adjacent to each site with power were very clean and nice. $15 to use the kitchen...so I guess that encourages you to walk into town to the Brown Trout Cafe for meals and a drink.☺

Lovely little campsite. We were tenting and got there while there were some free sites while some others missed out. Clean and tidy, hot water, sheltered from the wind. Couldn't ask for more for the self sufficient traveller.

Hidden gem, so glad we decided to pull in for the night! Just off the main road between Queenstown and Milford, a perfect rest stop! Private, individual shower/toilet for each powered site, incredibly welcoming and hard working host, facilities were clean. Also available are cabins which we drove past to get to the office, they looked great also. The resident horse, alpacas, sheep, goat and chickens right behind the sites made for some old fashioned fun as we got up close to get some amazing photos of them with the sun setting over the mountains in the background. We had so much fun here, our favourite stop of our self drive trip!!

Beautiful location between Milford Sound and Queenstown with horses and chickens right behind the sites. The shower and bathroom were in a shed type set up and since it was July it was pretty freezing to shower. There was hot water but I definitely wouldn't say unlimited. Overall pretty good value although we didn't pay the extra to use the kitchen.

Quaint, small and basic showers, but for $10, what's there not to like. A basic shed with kettle and microwave. If you're on a budget, this is your place.

This is a very small, very basic campsite. There is one small stand alone building with a bathroom and shower for all campsites (I believe 9 in total) to use. We visited in mid April and the building had so little insulation that it was way too cold to shower. Although previous reviews said the water was hot. We didn't use the kitchen as it costs $7.5 to use, which seemed quite high for what was there. If you're traveling from Queenstown to Milford Sound, this is an okay campsite.

Very friendly and welcoming host. Beautiful farm side view, alpacas and a horse at the fence behind the campsite and chooks and a rooster roaming around site making the stay more entertaining. Only $10 per person for a non powered site spot and it includes plenty of single clean toilets and showers, access to a washing machine and clothes line, a toaster and kettle. One of the best, if not the best campsite we stayed at in NZ. And not to mention, no sandflies!! Great value for money. Highly recommend.

Our favourite camp on the whole (21 days) trip from Auckland to Christchurch. Idilic location with two alpacas and horse just behind the fence, the owner is very nice and friendly and you can buy fresh free range eggs (50pp) and pick salad from her little garden. Toilets and showers are clean, washing machine is free (only cold water), you can use fridge, recharge your stuff, Spark network works just fine there... Plus it is near the main road between Queenstown and Milford Sound. 10+ if you ask us!

We stayed at Pam's and Rebecca's camping with our self contained van for one night. Nice welcome. Everything you need there : hot shower, very clean toilets. We were also able to wash our clothes for free. $20 for a non powered site, 2 people. Kitchen and chimney is an extra $10 per person which was a bit too much for us. Quiet place. Thank you!

Arrived late, nobody was in the office, self-registration was possible. We stayed in a tent on the ground around the lodge for $20 for two people. There, you can use the facilities of the lodge. Kitchen + TV room is an extra $7.50 per person. Free hot shower. Free cold washing, no dryer but plenty of space to hang clothes.

My favourite campsite so far! I last minute decided to stop here on the way back from Milford Sound to Cromwell and I am so glad I did! Quiet and quite small, secluded but so near the main road, 10 minute walk to the town where there is a cafe and store and WiFi at the cafe! You get your own en-suite shed with toilet and shower (really clean and nice) that also has 2 plug sockets! There's a laundry as well to use and alpacas, sheep and a horse in the paddock next to you! All for $15 a night!

Simple camping with the luxury of an ensuite! Located close to the gorgeous Mataura River, this is old school simple camping - in summer, wild flowers, blue river, hot sun and shady willows, very relaxing. This is a little place, only five small camp sites, all sheltered and fairly private with a little hut containing a clean hot shower, toilet and hand basin. No cooking facilities, just a perfect place to set up a simple campsite, kick back and relax. Tidy, cheap, relaxing and quiet. Loved it.

Oh, and there is a lodge too - looked pretty good, with wood burner for the winter. It has kitchen facilities.

Athol has a shop and a bottle store so you're covered for emergency supplies 😀
