Great place to stay. Right on a beach with resident sea lions (we nearly fell over one, which was a bit of a shock). The facilities were spotless, and everything was catered for... utensils, pans, plates, etc, were available for use (saved carting our own over to the kitchen - hooray). There was even washing up liquid and clean tea towels (changed daily). The lounge felt like home, with books to borrow and games to play. It's the only place I've not had to watch my two little boys like a hawk as the lounge space was safe for them to play in. There were even age-appropriate toys available for them. We meant to stay one night, and ended up staying three as it was easy enough to use it as a base for exploring the Catlins. And for $40 a night for the family (powered site), it felt like a bargain.

Hey Kate - thank you so much for your review - we really appreciate your feedback. Yep those sea lions lie so quietly on the beach or track and you think they are a log - had a few close encounters myself. Happy that your family had a great time with us - your boys are real cuties - its nice to come acrosss a family centred Holiday Park we you feel safe. Heard a morepark calling the other night - and a bird watcher staying here said she heard kiwi's so will have to get out with camera and a torch.
Hope your travels continued to go well, take excellent care, cheers Jude

Great location - nice beach to walk to with sea lions. Camp was a bit dense and facilities a bit dated. Owners very nice and helpful.

Great stay and it's true about the sea lions, they are there frolicking in the water or lazing in the sand. After wishing we had a fridge in our cabin, we found that at this holiday park we got one! Only to realise the noise is annoying. Back to the camp kitchen!

Nice clean small holiday park. The owners were lovely and I liked the extra touches like the garden you could help yourself from. The lounge and kitchen were great if not a bit chilly (it was quite a cold day when we were there). The view of the sea was lovely. The main downside for me was that we had to pay $2 for a 5 minute shower. I don't mind this if it's a very cheap campsite but at $16 per person unpowered I think a free 5 minute shower should be included. Apart from that it was a lovely site.

Catlins Newhaven Holiday Park responds:

Hi Sarah - thanks for taking the time to review us, and your compliments about Bren & myself. Yes our guests really enjoy being able to help themselves to veges, salads or herbs from the garden.
Guests sure do value having the kitchen/dining area and lounge facilities - especially guests like yourself travelling and either tenting or sleeping in a car. It provides space for people to eat and relax when they are not in a cabin/flat or camper van. Just on your pricing comments - we are exceptionally proud to advise that we have again held our prices at 2010 rates (that's no price increase for the last 5 years) despite of course, all our costs going up each year. We think that this is a grand accomplishment and we are very competitive here in the Catlins. We are on rain water and are trying to do our bit to reduce our carbon footprint, so we think $2 bucks for a hot 40 litre shower is reasonable. Sure is a beautiful spot - great day for a swim today with temps at 24 degrees.
take care, cheers Jude

Everything's fantastic, clean and beautiful; special highlight - the lounge was suitable for our 7 month old to crawl around and play safely, first camping out of 10 where this was possible.
