Absolutely lovely spot, unpowered sites very near the beach. Powered sites beautifully laid out and set up. Excellent facilities and friendly staff. Only (extremely) minor complaint is the showers are pretty whimpy. Not a huge deal, but when you are longing for a shower, a little pressure is nice😊. Still 10/10 though!

Great camping ground with all the amenities you need. Just be aware that the grounds for non powered vans is a bit lumpy and not level everywhere but the good thing is you can park with a great view of the beach.
Very clean well maintained toilets, showers and kitchen. Bikes available for kids and a great park and even a skate half pipe.
Sadly we arrived and there was dense fog! But we managed to still catch low tide to view the boulders which are a 2km walk away along the beach or 4 minutes drive. You just have to make sure you time it so that you’re back before the tide comes in if you’re walking.
Good coffee at Vanessa’s Cafe just up the road and she opens at 6am and the place is warm and inviting with a great selection of in-house made pies and cabinet food.

Just awesome I could go on for ages how great this place is.
The owners are so helpful and real cool people
And all the amenities are so clean and tidy.
Safe for the kids and the beach is wicked.
And the fish & chips at the top of the hill are the best you will come across.
There is a Four Square shop up the hill as well that will have everything that you need.
They even have bikes for the kids to ride around the camp
Can’t wait to go back again.
Real cool spot

Very nice camping spot, grassy generous sites and everything is very clean and well looked after. Super friendly hosts with tips for local attractions, saw three penguins and lots of seals <3.
The only downside was the showers, which were free (limited to six minutes) but not very hot. We might be a bit more sensitive because we're from the tropics but when it's only 14° outside and very windy as well, a satisfying shower needs to be a little bit hotter.

Good place to stay with good facilities, close to the beach. For kids, there is a good size play area outside the kitchen with a trampoline wee bikes and a boat to play in.
Only downside for us was having to camp in the area across the road from the main area, which meant our 3yo had to be accompanied. We could have camped in the area behind the office, but it was open to the road and didn't seem like a good idea.

What a gem!
Got to this place late at night in the dark. Office was closed but instructions outside on how to check in (they still have a honesty box!). Found a great spot by the beach on the non powered sites. In the morning woke up to birdsong and seaviews! Walked to the kitchen in the morning and was greeted by the very friendly owner Alex. He immediately asked if we had a good night and had found all the facilities. Gave us a rundown on what to do and see around the place (boulders, penguins, shag point...). Great little camp, very friendly owners and plenty to do in the surroundings. Ended up staying 3 nights instead of one!

The best word to describe this experience: surreal! We pulled into to this campground based on decent reviews and I met with a very nice woman at the front desk (thus the “3”). As I wanted to get a little work done I asked about the Internet speed and she suggested we go “talk to Alex.” Terrible mistake. This wild looking disheveled man emerges from a cabin and the woman asks about the wifi speed. Alex responds by saying “fast enough, but you need to leave.” Shocked, I stated that I just wanted some idea. To which he responds “...you’ll never be happy, so just leave...” On the brink of speechless, I asked if he was serious and he he told me to go find some other park. Which I proceeded to do. Thankfully, Alex’s behavior was not indicative of other in the area we found a lovely couple running the Riverside Park just up the road. They couldn’t have been nicer and they had great WiFi to boot. Alex was either having a bad day or is certifiable. Beware.
Moeraki Boulders Holiday Park & Motel responds:
Hi Don
Hope you gave the guys up the road a great review...because they deserve it. Great place.
As for what you just wrote here...try sticking to the truth next time and don't get personal.
Just because you were not happy with my answer (internet speed varies quite a bit here... speeds up to 15mb/s. So decent for us but apparently not good enough for you.) does not mean you have to start getting nasty and attack me personally in your review. I think this shows what kind of character you are - so no further comment on that. If internet is the most important thing for you - stay in a town where there is fibre available. We are a little holiday park in a beach reserve far from any city...
...and most of our guests come here to enjoy nature and to be right on the beach. It takes half an hour along the beach to walk to the Moeraki Boulders and 10 minutes drive to see the yellow-eyed penguins (free, donation appreciated). Great cafe, tavern, petrol station and supermarket 250m away. Full facilities.

Small and nice campsite. We asked for a powered site and got a nice place to park our camper van, however one hour later all powered sites were full and it looked more like a parking than a campsite. We decided to drive to the other site of the road for unpowered sites, a large grass filed, and had a great view on the ocean. The children loved it and played the whole evening with all the bikes. Free warm water and well equipped kitchen.

One of the best campgrounds we have stayed at during our 3 month travel through NZ! Although you can easily see that the facilities are not brand-new you have everything you need for an awesome time: a clean and well-equipped kitchen, clean facilities, fairly priced laundry, a bbq etc. Having a 1-year-old baby there are even advantages: a big lawn with toys and a boat, short walk to the sea, etc. On top of that there is a great cafe pretty close by :) Our absolute favorite so far!!

Really nice camping, we took an unpowered site ($15 per person) and the place is grassy and has a view to the sea. You choose your own spot and can be in the sun or in the shade, as you wish. The beach is super close. The lady at the reception was very nice, gave us a lot of info about the tide times, when to go to the Boulders (only accessible at low tide) and when to go to the Lighthouse. The Boulders can be reached via a 20-30 min beach walk in low tide, or by car of course. The Lighthouse is further away, around 8 km if I remember correctly. The camping facilities are good and clean: the toilets and showers are super clean, though the showers are timed, there's a kitchen equipped with pots, plates, cups, cutlery etc, and also a lounge and a play area for kids. Not crowded at all when we were there (18 February). The only downside was that there was no mobile signal on the camp grounds, we had to walk to the highway to get it.

Still a great spot on our return two years later. Easy access to the boulders down the beach. I might say if you want to use the Internet you need to pay a small amount, and when you pay this the code is sent to you email address. And of course you can't get this unless you can get online, and you can't get online unless you have the code. We didn't work this out until after we had left and got online elsewhere. It was only five dollars. Still a ten.

Nice owners, gave great tips for things to explore. Cheap tent sites, but unfortunately were the toilets and showers quite filthy. Perhaps because of the locals who thought it was necessary to bring a noisy power supply to listen to music at their tent site. Also sleeping next to a railway where two heavy trains rush over in the middle of the night wasn't the best experience. And those Boulders are really not so spectacular. Definitely not the best campsite to visit during peak season.
Moeraki Boulders Holiday Park & Motel responds:
Dear Michiel
Thanks a lot for taking time to comment on your experience. You visited in January which is our peak holiday season. We try to keep our facilities spotless at all times but with about 30 children in the camp it is sometimes difficult to keep up.
It is correct that we do allow generators in some parts of our camp during the day (8am to 8pm) as we run out of powered sites during peak season. If I remember correctly you were staying in your car parked up next to the only generator in the park at this time. Our camp has a large camping area where guests are free to choose a site.
Anyway, I hope you made some great memories on your travels. Hope to see you back here another time - may be not in peak season.
Kind regards from sunny Hampden Beach.

This lovely Swiss family run campground is located right next to the beach. It is a 30-45 minute walk during low tide to the Moeraki Boulders. I highly recommend renting one of Alex's mountain bikes in the morning hours to bike to the boulders via the beach! When we did this my face was so sore from such a big grin on my face the entire ride! Gorgeous and magical. The camp is equipped with a clean well stocked kitchen, sparkling toilets and showers, relaxing lounge and plenty of space for kids to play. Pitch a tent, plug in your travel vehicle, rent a backpacker bunk, or rent one of the cabins. I liked pitching our tent across from the ocean in the big open field! Stay for more than a night to get the full experience.

"What a fantastic holiday! This was great value at a stunning location. If you're looking for an authentic kiwi beachside camping experience this place is great. We had 3 seperate sites for our big family. I shared a cabin/motel with 4 others- this was very clean, modern and comfortable and perfect for us. (We flew in from Sydney, drove down from Christchurch, and wanted to have the camping experience without carrying the usal tents and sleeping bags etc.). No frills but everything we needed. The view from our balcony down to the beach was stunning. My son and his partner had an unpowered site for a campervan in a great spot and used the kitchen/laundry/lounge facilities etc and found all very clean and well organised. My sister and her family have been camping in a caravan over New Years for a few years now, at a powered site. They went fishing several mornings- the fish were plentiful and delicious! The trampoline and sports gear meant the kids made friends while playing all day. I loved the eco-friendly approach to recyling. We roasted marshmallows on the beach in the evening and took beach walks at sunrise. Set aside a couple of hours to walk down to the boulders and back or drive 5 mins to walk straight down the hill. We will definately be back. Thanks Alex and family for your warmth and hospitality :)

A small, out of the way holiday park with the Moeraki Boulders about 20 minutes walk down the beach.
Though not high-tech when we stayed, there is new management who are actively improving the facilities for the coming summer season. As it was, a single bathroom served both men and women and an enclosed shower room stayed warm while showering. The kitchen was clean and well-supplied with dishes, though unheated.
Overall, the most reasonable price-for-service we found for tenting ($22/ 1 night for 2 adults).
