No potable water on site due to pollution of town supply. We were told this happens regularly so maybe management could consider their own filtration like other rural sites we have visited. Otherwise okay. Steep walk back from town.

Campground was fine, good showers, kitchen clean and tidy. Not in town, so bit of a hill walk to get down there or a 3 minute drive.

Signposting to get there could be a bit better, you see a sign for camping but no campsite name, if you miss the turn just keep going there’s another turn at the bottom of the hill, also not named.

We were there a bit before and for 3 weeks of the level 4 lockdown. We found the kitchen and shower facilities fine when they were open but what really set this park apart is the way they handled the shutdown. The rate was reduced to account for the closed facilities and the hosts did many things to make life more pleasant. These included finding a legal way to provide access to a washer, supplying little things like toilet chemicals, and even loaning us a sharpener for our kitchen knives. It's difficult to imagine a better park to be stuck in.

Very welcoming front desk person, situated within walking distance down the trail to town, with views of the bay. Kitchen is large and well stocked. Washrooms are clean and really nice long showers. Only downside was we were there in September and they do not heat any of their washrooms or kitchen area so pretty much freezing cold. Also the wifi was extremely limiting, but all in all a good place to stay.

Stayed here for a couple of nights on one of their powered sites. Nice, solid holiday park. Kitchen was well appointed and clean, as too were the showers/toilets...perhaps missing some of the bells and whistles that other holiday parks offer but that shouldn't detract from what is a really good little place to stay - and at a reasonable price.

Beautiful views of the bay and it has a handy path down to the town itself. Word of note however, the path was quite steep and slippery underfoot as we stayed in winter so take care! Kids enjoyed the playground and some wi-fi chucked in for good measure never hurts!

Good facilities but the only real option in Akaroa. The elevated position has the benefit of a cool breeze and nice views but just too far out of town to class as local. The steep hill to the site by road or the shortcut footpath involves over 120 steps so beware if you’re not after a work out after a few drinks. All the typical mod cons for a Top 10 site, main downfall the Hill.

There are few campsites around Akaroa, so you will probably end up staying here. As with most Top 10 sites, the facilities are expensive and fundamentally fine BUT at busy times the site is very, very cramped. Don't expect any privacy whatsoever - you will be able to hear your neighbours turning over, and they will be able to hear you. Normally you expect this with most Top 10 sites at busy time, and the pay-off is usually a great location; U
unlike other central Top 10 sites, however, the walk to Akaroa from this site is difficult. The site is halfway up a very, very steep hill - it takes a good 15 minutes to walk into the main part of town on the way down, and easily double that on the way back, which might be a deterrent to going out into Akaroa if you are not particularly fit. Only stay here if you are fit or have alternative transport.

Pretty awful place if you don't want to feel like you're in the middle of a housing estate. Frequent visitors of families taking up way more space than they should. Old facilities. Showers not very clean in general. Didn't see a cleaner once in 3 days.
The dump stations were awful. No hoses or sanitiser provided.
Check out is 10am yet we had someone allocated to our spot at 9:15am while we were still packing up.

The walk to Akaroa is down a VERY steep set of steps. Be warned.

Overcrowded, overpriced, old fashioned and nothing compared to the other Top 10s we had been to.

Reviewed almost 7 years ago

Akaroa TOP 10 Holiday Park responds:

We are sorry that you did not find the park to your liking, but we would like to point out that all our showers have since been replaced, and obviously our cleaners were there and doing their job even if you failed to see them. The dump stations do have sanitisers and hoses, but it is possible they were away for repairs temporally. With a popular park it sometimes will happen that someone will arrive early but this should not cause an issue since they would have to wait until the site was vacant at 10 am.

Despite having nearly complete vacancy staff at this top 10 chose to put us in the worst site on the property. BBQ is 'token' operated - not coin (not that we have seen something so cheap as a coin operated BBQ!!) office was closed before their stated closing time and tokens were not available. Entire site was old and borderline not functional (bathrooms were from the 1970's, hot plates in kitchen took forever to warm up and were difficult to operate because controls were used to the point of being illegible) finally staff were absolute pricks at check out and denied use of bathrooms when we were leaving!! Top 10 has a beautiful location in Akaroa but staff made the experience a terrible disappointment. Not worth the money.

We thank you for your comments. If you had told us that you were unhappy with your site we would have gladly changed it for you. During the quiet season the office door may be closed. However we are available at all times by buzzer located outside the door. The colour of our hand basins may not be to every ones liking. However we believe our shower facilities are of a good standard . We are aware that the markings on the controls on the hotplates are worn after the season. This is currently being dealt with. However there are also two new stoves in the kitchen. I do not understand your comment about not being able to use the showers. They stay open for guests 24 hrs a day.

Park has great views, but our experience was pretty much ruined by the site we were allocated. Our powered site for our motorhome backed onto the communal kitchen, playground and rubbish area (which consisted of two box trailers). The noise and light from the kitchen went on until about 11.00pm - as did the playground which some campers seem to use as a babysitter. We were then woken early again by the same - with the added noise of people emptying their bins early as they prepared to leave.

We were travelling with 2 kids (3 & 9) so being close to the playground is more of a hindrance than a benefit - if there are kids playing, they want to join in no matter the time.

We planned to stay for 2 nights, and probably would have if we'd had a better site - instead we moved on.

Over priced and well past its use-by date. This place needs a major refurb as the facilities are very tired. From the avocado coloured basins and the missing grout in the tiles this place screams out 1970. The only good thing was a nice view over the harbour, but it is over priced for the view. The hard stands are close together and there is no privacy, along with the recycling facilities being a joke as all the rubbish is put in a rubbish trailer which appeared to not been emptied for some time as it was full. Not recommended.

Thank you for taking the time to comment, we would like to take the opportunity to explain that there was some upgrading of the ablution blocks in progress when you visited, which unfortunately meant they were not presented in the best light, but this work will be finished in the near future. As it also happened the recycling trailer was away for modification and as a consequence we only had the one trailer available on the days you were there, meaning we were unable to keep the different types of rubbish separate. The trailer has since been put back into service and it is business as usual.

Had reserved a spot, and the one they had for us was impossible to get to with our camper van, as are many of the spots here. They put us in "overflow" area with no power like we had reserved. They were rude and slow to resolve our problem; they offered no compensation for their inability to control their holiday park. I advise staying anywhere but here.

Reviewed over 8 years ago

Akaroa TOP 10 Holiday Park responds:

We appreciate all reviews and comments and although we cannot answer every one we do take notice and do our best to rectify. On this occasion it is my understanding the booking was made online for a tent site on Easter Sat, and it was only discovered on arrival that it was for a camper van that was too big for the site you had booked, leaving us no option other than using our overflow site. This highlights the problem with guests booking directly online, since if they do we are not given the opportunity to ask the size of their van and allocate an appropriate sized site. Normally this is not an issue as there would be other more suitable sites we could offer on arrival, but on this occasion, being Easter, we were already full and there were no suitable powered sites left. It is always difficult to find an alternative site when full, but we do apologize for the time it took to resolve the issue, and appreciate that you were able to stay for three nights. To avoid this problem we have looked at ways to allow persons booking on line to choose sites that are suitable for the size of their vans, but that still relies on them knowing what size van the hire company may supply before booking a site, consequently it would seem safer to contact the park to avoid this happening.
Yours,
Richard

Our only top 10 pick of this holiday, selected before we got the iPad App, which opened up a whole other world. However, this was fine. All mod cons for comfortable camping. Close to Akaroa itself, a short walk down a steep hill. Staff were not as engaged with us as campers as others we subsequently came across in the smaller independent sector camps. More expensive than we had anticipated, and we didn't get the full benefit of the infrastructure because we only stayed one night.

On the promotional picture it was shown as if the camping was right on the lake bank. However it is not. Maybe the view is great for campervans, but for the tents you are not able to see anything except the bushes.
The facilities were good, however i believe the camping site to be expensive.

Owners couldnt workout if a pet was allowed or not, half closed one ablution block, then reopened it and closed the other half? Showers just trickle out hot water, if you want some force with it, it goes cold quickly. Faulty power points, needs finger board for signage and a few more paths. Nice spot though, 5min walk to town through bush track.

Akaroa TOP 10 Holiday Park responds:

We would like to take this oportunity to apologise to all our guests who have been inconvienced by our ongoing hot water issues. We suffered a major failure as a result of the earthquakes, and in order to avoid a complete shutdown for a prolonged period repairs were made. These proved unsuccessful so a whole new system was installed, and we are pleased to report it is now up and running, so the recent lack of hot water supply and pressure is a thing of the past.
We thank you for your comments and assure you that issues raised in these reviews are acted upon in order to present the most enjoyable stay that we can
Sincerely,
R.Russell
