Pretty poor experience. Pricey for what it is: $42 for a powered site - on grass. Facilities are fairly run down still. Have to pay extra for showers $0.50 for 6 minutes and only two shower cubicles in the women's. Coin box is on outside of cubicle and hot water starts when you put coin in, so tricky to use. Instructions explicitly stated to get change from reception if you don't have any, but we got yelled at for interrupting the staff's 'lie in' (it was 9am on a Friday). Apparently reception doesn't open until 10am 'during the winter months', despite hours not being listed anywhere and not being informed as much the day before on check in. We tried to ask other campers for change before disturbing reception because it looked closed, but also had a time schedule to stick to - that was thrown off. Kitchen is missing most utensils, a drawer of lots of forks and one knife. Lots of angry signs about guests cleaning up after themselves "I am not your mother" but still very grubby. Not worth the cost. If you don't want people coming to reception for shower change - maybe don't charge for hot showers? Or get a change machine? Or ask if they need change during check in? No one deserves to be yelled at because they need a shower and were following your instructions and rules.
Offers all facilities, including washing mashines and several ovens to have a pizza or two. Showers take are 50 Cent for 6 minutes. Overall nice spot but not cheap. Kayak tours through Abel tasman start nearby, would recommend these as well.
Very well located close to abel tasman park. Facilities needs to be renewed.
Great place to camp after hiking Able Tasman. Facilities were up to date, very very clean with great hot showers($3 for 6 mintues) and washer/dryer. The owners are so, so nice and helpful and even lent us their ketchup for our daughter's hotdog. They obviously work very very hard. There were birds that my daughter loved to look at and a TV room that has some DVDs we borrowed for one night. Great value for the money!
$46 for two people on an unpowered site. For that you get Internet which isn't working. And of course you have to pay extra for the showers.
Worse price/performance ratio so far in NZ.
And as others already mentioned : it is situated between two noisy streets.
Would give it 10/10 if it had a dump station. Had to travel to the New World car park to empty the toilet cartridge. Lovely people.
Nice and cozy, very clean, friendly staff, normal priced.
Access savings worth hundreds of $$ on Top Ranked NZ Accommodation and Activities for just $1 per day.
Nice campground, well stocked kitchen. A garden which you can pick veges and herbs from, with friendly locals and owners.
Unpowered sites fairly close to road but not a massive problem if you park on the other side. Kitchen and showers very clean. Several locals living here but friendly, not a problem! $17 each for unpowered site and showers only 50c!
We stayed for one night in June on a powered site and paid $19 per person. We had enough space and the facilities were great. The owner is lovely, would definitely recommend this campsite.
This is a small campsite. The staff have a very business like approach. Just pay and there's your spot. The amenities are too little, even for the small campsite. Pretty noisy near the main road. Would definitely not stay here again.
It's a relatively small but lovely campsite. Helpful staff members and really good wifi! Can recommend it for sure.
Paid $18pp for unpowered site. Very helpful and friendly host, clean facilities and well equipped kitchen. They have a swimming pool (we didn't use, late arrival). There's even a small garden with natural grown herbs and vegetables for free use. Hot showers costs 50 cent/6 minutes. Free WiFi!
Only negative aspect: there are two roads nearby that were hearable in the morning (quiet at night!). This is clearly one of the best parks we've been to in the last two weeks!
We have stayed in 21 parks throughout the South Is and this is the most disappointing. Only two showers in the Mens for the whole park, one internal toilet + urinal and two unisex outside. Muddy campsites and also asking top dollar with paid showers (the only one out of 21). You also need a torch at night because there is no park lighting.
Fernwood Holiday Park - Motueka is open for business… Visit Website …now's your chance to take a closer look.
Camp sites are spacious good clean facilities well stocked kitchen. You can even select fresh herbs and veg from the adjacent garden.bus pick up for Abel tasman tours at the gate a real bonus.hosts and staff very friendly would book again
Very friendly staff. Clean kitchen and toilets. Nice garden area with access to homegrown herbs.
Good place and atmosphere. The male owner can be a bit rude, but nice vegetable garden.
Nice and affordable accommodation.
I really liked that it is environmentally sustainable there. Rubbish vegetable garden, and you have to pay 50 cents for a shower and BBQ.
Expensive, had to pay extra for shower, unfriendly staff.
Friendly and helpful people.
A bit noisy with the road beside, but hosts very helpful.
Hi all, we have stayed at this holiday park on a few occasions now and we must commend tony and Judith for the amount of work they have done at the camp in the time they have owned it.On our recent stay they have upgraded the toilet and shower areas and added a family bathroom and added colour with the rainbow of out door furniture and what a treat to be able to help oneself to some seasonal veges and herbs. Great stuff, we will be back.
it is really irritating to pay full price, and then not have a dump station, fresh water etc. but it was cheaper than the other sites in town

It is the first time I have ever written a review on a holiday park, but I honestly feel that I have to advise
other campers about this holiday Park. We booked over a busy period for ourselves and another couple (booking two campsites). When we arrived there were other people on our site and after waiting around and the manager being rude and eventually telling me that they are very busy and that they are overbooked and we are welcome to leave (when I politely asked him if he
had another site for us as we did not want to disrupt the people that we on our site at the time). The people who were on our site at the time paid for another night and had to pack up and go to a different site. It was really very unorganised and unprofessional. The other thing is the lady of the park started mowing the laws the following day with sand and grass blowing into the tents, I mean my gosh could she not have waited for it to quiten down, the grass was not in desperate need for a cut as it was. She even mowed around peoples washing hanging on the line - no respect if you ask me. Will I ever recommend anyone to stay there, no way, I will never go back and I have warned a fair amount of friends. The showers get cleaned in the mornings and that is it over a very busy time, felt like a bush wee would be safer at one stage!!
Fernwood Holiday Park - Motueka responds:
Thank you for your comments, we are disappointed that you did not share your concerns with us during your stay.
If I can address each of your concerns :
At Fernwood Holiday Park we offer all guests a late checkout time of 12 midday. Our recollection is that when you arrived mid morning, the previous nights guests on one of the sites allocated to your group were still on site and had yet to come to the office to book in for another night. Normally this does not present any difficulty, we simply offer new arrivals another site/s. Unfortunately, as we were extremely busy, we did not have another two powered sites adjacent to each other to offer you. We advised you of the reason we could not immediately offer you two sites and that if you did not mind waiting, your sites should be available shortly. - Alternatively if you preferred your payment could be refunded and you could go to another Holiday Park. (We would have considered it rude to insist the previous night’s guest vacate the site immediately). It is our belief that the options were discussed politely with you and at no point was anyone discourteous.
In terms of mowing the lawns, whilst we try not to appear disrespectful, we do try to keep the grounds tidy. Lawns are mown at quiet times when most guests have gone out for the day.
Your comments about cleaning the bathrooms are noted. Unlike many camp sites, we do not close the ablution block at a specific time. Our cleaning staff use their discretion and close an area when it is quiet and the majority of guests appear to have left for the day. (Usually this is late morning or early afternoon during busy periods). Ironically, sometimes lots of guests emerge from their sites for a shower / to make breakfast as soon as you have put out the “closed for cleaning” sign. There are unisex toilets and showers available when the main shower block is closed.
Absolutely awful. The camp is situated in the space of an inverted Y, with the Y being primary roading. One arm of the Y is the Motueka High St and the other is the 50 km to 100 km speed limit transition of the State Highway after a roundabout (i.e., everyone revving up to highway cruising speed next to the camp, including the usual boy racers). We were in a terribly neglected spider-web-ridden old caravan that we actually felt sorry for and want to take home with us. The immediate neighbours were shocking (large camping group with music, booze, party, etc., would not turn off the music). At 11 pm we took out our 2 person backcountry tent and squeezed into the quietest place we could find next to a fence (the bottom middle of the inverted Y). Throughout all this, the male operator was bordering on Basil Faulty territory (the lady operator was much friendlier during the day). Truly the worst place we have stayed at in NZ (been living here for 10 years). Never placed an accommodation review before. This camp made a big impression on us.

We are disappointed that you did not enjoy your stay at Fernwood Holiday Park.
We shall respond to each of your concerns.
The Holiday Park is bordered by SH60; this is one aspect of the holiday park we cannot change. Guests are aware of the sites location when they arrive and are welcome to inspect the Holiday Park prior to booking in. Traffic noise is an issue, especially at this the busiest time of the year. Traffic noise does tend to subside in the evening and our guests are mostly enjoying the area and off site during the day. In 2011, we planted a secondary hedge along the road boundary; this should help to reduce road noise. - In contrast, many guests have commented on how quiet the site is at night. Since purchasing the Holiday Park in March 2011, we have worked extremely hard to upgrade and improve the Holiday Park. A major refurbishment of the communal facilities is now complete. The on-site caravans came with the business. We advise all guests when booking, that the caravans are old and basic, but clean and tidy. Keeping the outside of the caravans free from cobwebs is a challenge, particularly when we are incredibly busy. We consider "adventure biker's" comments about his fellow campers to be unreasonable. On the night in question, we walked around the campsite at 10.30pm, a few groups were sitting outside their tents (in our opinion) chatting quietly. When we walked around again about 11.15pm, everyone had gone to bed. - We work hard to encourage campers to be considerate towards others but equally try to strike a balance between everyone's needs; and to acknowledge that people are on holiday. In terms of our behaviour as host, we try to always be positive and friendly, but even our patience wears thin on occasions. Lots of guests during this period commented on how we were always helpful and smiling despite working from early morning till late at night. During 2013 we will continue to welcome visitors to see our ongoing improvements
A small affordable camp and friendly people.
Absolute no go, unfriendly manager.
Nice campsite, I paid 15$ pp. Showers are 1$ for 6 minutes. There is a kitchen with fridges, sinks and hot plates. The lounge has a TV and a free charging station (very useful).
Facilities are clean and not too old. There is also a free pool and a recreation area for kids.
The owners are also very friendly. About 20 mn from town center by foot. Will come back :)
Just spent a long weekend camping at Fernwood holiday park on a powered tent site, I believe this holiday park has new owners. I have to say that it was those little extra touches that impressed me right from the moment we checked in, from Judith one of the owners saying "help yourself to any of the vegetables and herbs from out of the garden". The kitchen area was certainly well equipped with fridge/freezes to keep your food cold and fresh, pots, pans, cutlery, cups and even glasses for that chilled drink after all the hard work putting up the tent on a hot sunny day! Extremely friendly staff also never to afraid to say hello and have a chat!
Ok so they have just taken over this site and have done a lot of work but still have a lot more work to do and good luck to them it is certainly one of the friendliest sites we have stayed at, we definitely will be going back to stay again, this holiday park had a very family friendly atmosphere!
We stayed one night after leaving the nearby Top 10 park because of overcrowding.
Fernwood was certainly not overcrowded, the owners were very friendly and helpful.
Only two things let it down for us, one was the toilets and showers, they were old and untidy with spiders and cobwebs for decoration.
I know the owners are working hard to improve this.
The second was the traffic noise, while visually our site was nicely private and spacious, its close proximity to a busy road meant noise all night.
We find nothing worse than a bad nights sleep to ruin the next day of driving.
A lush, green site with a fantastic atmosphere and helpful, friendly owners. Basic but clean facilities and really reasonable rates. A great base to discover the Abel Tasman region from.
Fernwood had been sadly neglected, mainly due to health issues affecting the previous owners. The new owners have made - and are still making - changes which have improved things considerably. Planned future changes will continue to improve this camp. The owners are friendly, welcoming & extremely helpful - I've seen numerous occasions where travelers experiences have been greatly enhanced by input from the owners. I don't understand where/why the bad reviews above have come from - I've stayed at the camp off & on for many months & have seen nothing to warrant such comments. Fernwood is family friendly & I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone wanting a pleasant, hassle free place to stay while visiting the area. I have no reason to doubt my ranking will go up as improvements continue to be made.
A lovely an relaxing place to camp. The facilities are basic but clean and properly working. The owners Judith and Tony and their staff are very friendly. I have been staying a few times on this camping ground (with previous and new owner). Since Judith and Tony have taken it over in march 2011 a lot of improvement has been done. I enjoyed my time at fernwood holiday park and I would stay there again any time.

hello everybody my name is alessandro. i am italian.
me and friends from all over the world spent in fernwood holiday park all the apple picking season 2011, from middle february to middle may..... 3 monthes of happiness i can say.
Fernwood is managed by Tony and Judith. Guys, they are a splendid couple, generous, friendly, tolerants and super good people. I cannot explain by words.
the camping is very confortable and this is way alot alot of people moved there. also because is super CHEAP compare to the hostel.
it was so good time because after work you come back in a confortable place and you can enjoy the evening with other backpacker like you!!
i mean if you r in motueka just go there and enjoy guys.
still i wanna thank tony and judith for all they gave to us
The really friendly staff could unfortuately not make up for the shabby amenities. The campground was too crowded with backpackers who did not care about anything.
Fernwood Holiday Park - Great place!!
We stayed there for nearly 3 month during our Work'n Travel Stay (They offer weekly rates for fruit pickers). So we got to know the place ever after the owners changed.
The new owners are such a lovely couple - friendly and helpful with each issue! So after a while we actually called the place some sort of home! ;-)
They've made good new changes (Wifi, bigger kitchen, more sockets...) and improved this place a lot!
So on our opinion it's a really good place to stay! Thumbs up!

i really enjoyed my time here at the fernwood holiday park. i'm now more than 9 weeks here on that campground. i saw the old and new management and i really have to say that the new owners changed a lot. where else you find a campground with good and clean sanitary facilities, a tv-room/charging station, a pool, free internet, wi-fi [zenbu] and a nice bbq for just 13$ a day. they also have a weekly offer for just 65$. perfect. and finaly one word to the new owners. this english couple is one of the friendliest i ever met here in new zealand. great. keep on going like that.
We've seen the camground under both Managements and i can honestly say that the new owners really improoved a lot.
Fernwood Holiday Park is, especially for backpackers, a nice place to stay. There is a weekly rate offered if you stay for a whole week. Some things might need an improovement, but when i see what has already changed since the new owners, i am sure that on our next visit i can give 10 points.

Originally I had posted a horrendous review for this location, but since that time the campground has come under new management, and the place has seen wondrous changes for the better. Both the management as well as the campground itself are orders of magnitude better, and I now feel it is a place highly worth experiencing.
