Where to start. . .
Carol and George have been soo kind and friendly to us. When we first arrived Carol was a warming welcome, we had previous problems freedom camping in the city centre with loud music in the early hours and it was a breath of fresh air staying at the camp grounds. We first met George walking around the grounds and he has been nothing but a friendly face and a great laugh. The kitchen area was always clean and tidy and so were the showers, there is the internet room to charge your devices for free also. We did get a bit confused on where to park but they are both friendly enough to be ask twice. Don't get put off by the cheap price, the owners are just very kind and helpful to campers. There are a few simple rules but as along as you cooperate all is fine. What was ment to be only a few nights ended up with over 2 weeks and counting. Thank you both for your great hospitality.

We have used this site a few times now and this trip we have used the site in early December when it was very quiet and then 2nd Dec when very busy.

Staff are great at the site with security wandering around during busy periods.

Cheap laundry.

Powered and none powered sites available.

Some full time residents on site.

For mountain bikers there are a variety of routes available from easy gravel tracks to black runs.

Stream close by which seemed popular.

Much as we stay away from big sites this one was very open friendly and no noise.

We flew by the seat of our pants as part of our “Wing It South Island Roadie”. A couple with a dog, called on the afternoon of our arrival, picked this place after seeing great review on here. Absolutely lovely people, we only stayed one night but could have stayed longer for sure. The place was very clean, great toilets and kitchen. Showers were great for the $2 time limited. We walked up some in the trails was great, nice view at the top. Great to be able to take the dog.

Thanks again team

We came in at pouring rain and the owner got us a site pretty far away from the toilet and kitchen block so we needed to walk trough the mud although we were almost the only ones around. Kitchen was alright but cold on a winters day, because there was no heating and the doors didn't really close. But for only $28 for 2 on a powered site it was alright and you are close to Nelson and the ferry at Picton.

It was a beautiful place with lots of trees. It's a great place for families, couples or groups because there is enough space for everyone, including the facilities. The space is also quite cheap: $10 per person with a non sustainable camper or tent. We haven't used the showers, so I can't say something about that, except that is cost $2 for 6 minutes (or a free cold shower). There is wifi available for payment as well. Just arrive before 9pm as the gates close after that. We both loved the nature of this camping spot. The hostess was really nice and helpful as well. Definitely recommend this place!

Nice campsite and nice place, but very small kitchen for such a big camp. It was not possible make a breakfast at morning, so we had to cook next to the car and we were late with a check out. If we wanted to clean a dish after the breakfast the kitchen was closed and the owner was really unfriendly and bad to us. I tried to explain him, that we are late because the kitchen was totally full, but he didn't listen. So be careful about the time at morning.

Reviewed about 3 years ago

Maitai Valley Motor Camp responds:

We have two kitchens and one is closed and cleaned at 10.00pm.The other is cleaned after lunch. My cleaners get held up if waiting on late campers and then they get behind the rest of the day. Much easier if campers use the kitchen/showers at the times they are advised on arriving. Everyone is notified when buildings close for cleaning. Sorry this did not fit your timetable, My husband is to the point and helpful to everyone. He does not get into discussion with a change of times, or change the rules when there is another option for campers to use our other buildings. We have two kitchens/sinks etc.

Twenty dollars for two people per night unpowered. The staff were amazing and so helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend you stay here, even the older couple we met from England said it was the best site they had stayed at. Five minute drive to centre of Nelson. OK campsite, bad for sandflies so repellant is a must . Toilets need updating and showers also need to be up dated, both these areas had a large collection of bed bugs over the floor. The kitchen areas are OK but still again these need updating. All in all an OK site, would not stay again as the toilets and showers are run down.

Stayed here for 1 night. Dodgy looking place with a large permanent resident section that has the standard unpleasant feeling around it. Because of the 'pay for all the extra's' system you end up paying the same as if you'd stay in other Nelson options closer to town. Facilities are outdated but clean. Cold wash only in the washers which basically means your clothes get wet and that's it. Wouldn't recommend staying here.

We camped all around the North and South Island, and this camp has to be by far the best one we have stayed at. It's maintained, lovely, and cheap. We paid $14pp for a powered site ($10pp unpowered). Extremely reasonable, and definitely the best/cheapest camping option near Nelson. The owners are just lovely. Extremely sweet, and helpful in every manner. Our pet cat Nigel managed to escape our RV one night, and they offered to help us out by setting up a trap to catch him. Luckily, he came back to the RV on his own terms :). But still extremely sweet of them to offer. The owners seem to be big animal lovers, like us. If you like nature/wildlife, this is a great park. Lovely mountain/country side setting. No road or city noise. Baby birds and a few pet ducks all around. Yes there are a lot of extras you may have to pay for, but it all makes sense. This camp is offering affordable camping (rare these days), and has to make up for their cheap rates somewhere. Showers are $2 for 5 min. Very very hot with great pressure. Worth it. Dump station is $5. If that bothers you, go dump free in town. This camp is on their own water/sewage system, so they have to pay for all their water use, and pay to have their septic system pumped. Wifi is $5 for 24h/1000mb. Talked with a few of the long term guests, and they all seemed so nice. Currently, we are the only temporary camper in the camp, so we have the "block" all to ourselves... So great! We came here expecting to stay just a night, but are currently on our third night, the longest we have stayed in one spot anywhere. Don't be put off by the few negative reviews from years ago. I'm sure these were just grumpy campers coming to stay in a budget campsite, but yet for some reason expected to be treated like royalty. There's a nice homely feel to the place. Would recommend to anyone.

Nice setting, but make you pay for everything. Shower - dirty and limited hot water $2, charging phone 50c, power outlets have barb wire like to stop people touching, try to buy ice and staff said not for backpackers. I really like the setting but not worth the bad experience

Reviewed almost 5 years ago and experienced in February 2015

Maitai Valley Motor Camp responds:

I find it strange that the majority of campers that come here, love the camp and always comment on how clean our facilities are. Showers are $2 for 6minutes. As for scary, we are very accommodating and sometimes young campers can abuse our hospitality. Then we will pull them up for this. We deal mainly with younger backpackers whom are happy to have a lovely camp, Cheap $8 camping for the stay, use of the kitchen, toilets, water. Anything else is optional and coin operated. Most of our plugs have been hardwired as some campers have pulled our plugs on freezers losing campers their frozen foods. We offer charging at 50c per item at the office. This has stopped the problems. Sorry if your experience was not to your liking, If we can make the majority of campers happy then we accept that you cannot please everyone. We do try our best. We do have very happy campers pass through here which makes it worth while. Hope the rest of your camping experiences are good.

I didn't want to give my cell mobile with personal messages and photos to a stranger so my battery stayed low.

Having spent a month travelling New Zealand this has to be the strangest place we stayed. Positives are that it is cheap; the negatives are the rude owners and long term 'residents'. This place reminded me of the movie deliverance. All power points have been 'caged' over to stop guests 'stealing power'. This is no place to bring a family - felt very unsafe while we were there.

Magical camground, beauitiful native trees and bush, lovely river you can swim in, great walkway to Nelson city through a incredible valley enriched in nature, 30mins away if your fit, incredible native birds fly around the trees, open grass area to camp in.
Listen to the gentle soft sound of the river as you drift off into a deep sleep which comes from living in mans natural element.
Futher that you're paying $6 to stay and its a mere $2 coin to have the best hot shower of your life. $8 all up to spend a night in one of the greatest campgrounds in New Zealand with the best hot shower included! Yes please! For $8 one could buy a cup an espresso coffee and a small afghan cookie. But why?

When $8 can buy you a priceless New Zealand camping experience with a brilliant hot shower, add an extra $2 to the math and pick a chocolate bar up from the shop or a ice cold coca cola :)
