It was a very warm and friendly reception by the owner. This explained the premises and the way to the falls and fireflies and further hikes very well. It was no problem to extend the stay. The entire area is very neat and clean .

Would have given 11/10 if possible.

A "hidden gem" in the landscape.
A reallu lovely place to stay for the night. Kind family who makes sure that everything is good.
We got two banana muffins and some animal food for their sheep and pigs. We had fun feeding those.

Nice kitchen, toilets and showers.

Walk the recommended walk to the waterfall. Really worth it. It is a quite difficult route though. But it is marked with red dots to make sure that you are going the right way.

If you have the opportunity to go here, you should definitely do it!

Brilliant campsite!

Probably my favourite campsite yet! The owners were very friendly and gave us some muffins on arrival, which it was a very nice touch. Then we got some animal food to feed the pigs, sheep and Katie the goat.

Then we waited till the sunset and we did the walked to the waterfall which was absolutely beautiful! Then when it was dark we waited for the glow worms come out, it was our first time seeing glow worms and really enjoyed it!

The facilities were great, the showers were really good and no time limit. Also got free WiFi. Just an all round brilliant campsite, if you are in the area just stay here, you won’t regret it!

Amazing! Incredible! Stay here! What a wonderful experience. Good facilities with hot showers for free, a log burner, cooking facilities, bbq and on top sheep and goats to feed (they give you the feed free on arrival), a lively waterfall walk and the friendliest people you could wish for. A banana muffin was given on arrival and as I had two brown bananas in the car I gave them to the lady and said to use them for her cakes, she gave me a couple cakes the next day for my long walk for the bananas!!!! Can’t go wrong. Brilliant place better than the rival 15km down the road! Thanks for a great stay, one of the favourites in New Zealand.

Fabulous stopover in the Marlborough region and on the way to the ferry. Laundry facilities that work, muffins on checkin as advertised, and lots of farm animals that you can feed if you want. Very pleasant family running the place. The only reason I just can’t quite give a 10/10 is the water pressure on the shower is so low it took ages to get the shampoo out of my hair.

The cabin was warm and comfortable. The kitchen and bathrooms are clean and well-equipped. There is even a cozy fireplace in the kitchen. We were handed a superbly hand-drawn map of the farm showing the way to the hidden waterfall. The walk through the farm and to the waterfall was absolutely fun and stunning. We were presented with fresh baked muffins on arrival, as well as a free upgrade to our room. The service was incredibly friendly, and informative, giving us ideas on what we could do during our stay.

Our kids loved feeding the animals on the farm (you are given a free bag of animal food on arrival) and the walk up to the waterfall was spectacular. Beautifully clean cabin and so very well equipped.

Heaps of space, and a nice little park on site. The school pool which is available for guests was an added bonus but the beaches at QC pass were so close by too. A wonderful stay. We'll come back again next time with our tent to stay longer.

We stayed here in a self contained campervan the night before catching the ferry, for which it was ideal. We much appreciated the warm muffin and sheep food on arrival. We arrived just in time to walk up to the waterfall for dusk and to see the glowworms, which we enjoyed. A torch and sturdy footwear were essential. The tail end of a cyclone went through overnight. In the morning the pitches were wet and muddy, but we had no problem getting off or accessing the dump station.

Reviewed over 2 years ago and experienced in April 2016

Smiths Farm Holiday Park - Havelock responds:

Hi Alan,
Like the previous reviewer, you also experienced Cyclone Cook which dumped some serious rain on our little valley. We are pleased that despite that, you managed to get up to the waterfall and to see the glow worms which are stunning at the moment. Some of our sites have been affected by the effects of the Kaikoura earthquake (residual liquifaction which we originally assumed was just a small spring) and it is only now that we are able to see that these problem areas add to the wet muddyness. We are trying to address this but it won't be fully solved until after winter sadly.
We hope that you enjoyed the ferry trip and that the rest of your holiday was wonderful. Kind Regards, Barbara and Chris

Lovely spot. We arrived late at night and in torrential rain. Too wet to tent as planned with the area hit by the edges of Cyclone Cook. Our hosts went out of their way to sort us into a cabin overnight. Cabin was warm and clean. A fire was burning in the common area, and we were welcomed with a little basket of fresh, warm muffins. Will definitely be back to stay longer, in our tents and the sunshine!

We were on our way to Nelson and need a stop over as our ferry got in later. We were just planning to pop in, sleep and head out. We were warmly greeted when checking in and felt very welcome (warm muffins go a long way). After arriving, we considered staying another night to explore the area, but the timing didn't work out -- next time.

The place is spotless and compared to other parks we've stayed in very roomy (doesn't feel like a parking lot). We met several friendly families and overall the place had a very good feeling to it.

Highlights for the kids were the animals on the farm and the hike to the glow worms at dusk as suggested by the hosts. A bag of feed was also provided for each child at check-in. With three weeks in our campervan, this was an unexpected highlight for all of us.

Great value for the price and amazing hosts that made you feel like family, even for a short stay. Highly recommended, especially if you are travelling with children.

Thanks,
-Jason

Friendly and helpful welcome, with lots of information. The lady booked our kayaking trip for us. Powered pitches quite small. But the real complaint was with the facilities. For toilets: 1 male, 1 female, 1 disabled and 1 urinal. This was a big campsite and we quite often had to wait for a free toilet. Showers were similarly inadequate. There were no separate wash basins, so people were cleanng their teeth in the laundry sinks. With a second shower block this site would be transformed, as there were a large number of tent users who really needed good facilities.

Reviewed over 2 years ago

Smiths Farm Holiday Park - Havelock responds:

Hi Alan, We are disappointed that you did not come and talk to us before posting your comments. Our powered sites are actually above the average size in NZ. We are not a big park: we believe we are actually the smallest holiday park or campsite by allowed number of guests and powered/tent sites in NZ. We limit our numbers to 80 people at any one time (and our motels and self contained Units have their own showers, toilets, kitchens, etc). Yes, we only have one access unisex facility, one female toilet, one male toilet and one urinal. We have the correct amount for our allowed guests on tent sites. As for the sinks in the laundry area, they are for brushing your teeth in. There is one main laundry sink which is right next to the washing machine, the other two sinks are for face washing and teeth brushing. There are also sinks in the toilet areas which people use to brush their teeth. We are a small privately owned park: we are not some big chain park and make no claim to be one. Those people preferring lots of showers and toilets can also expect lots of other people, i.e big parks= big amounts of people: this won't ever be happening here as we prefer to stay small and personal so that we can continue to give a friendly and helpful service. When the park is full, we stay up often until midnight each night to ensure that the facilities are kept in a clean and hygienic manner.

A powered site for 2 people costs $36. Family friendly campsite. For the greeting you get a muffin and food for the sheep and goats. Glowworms can be seen very close by. Unfortunately, only three showers which are a little shabby. Too little for all the families. Fortunately the toilets are separate. Mediocre cost / benefit ratio.

Reviewed almost 3 years ago

Smiths Farm Holiday Park - Havelock responds:

Thank you for your review Matthias and we are sorry that you had a mediocre experience. We note that when you stayed with us it was the very height of the Christmas/New Year holiday season and so we were at "No vacancy" with 80 people in the park (which is our limit). Yes, we only have three showers and three toilets plus a urinal: this is what we are required to have on a ratio to guests as at least 20 of the guests use their own showers and toilets in their self contained units or motels. The cost of $36 for two adults on a powered site has been the same since 2010 and is below the average cost in NZ (even for some DOC sites). We believe it is a fair and reasonable cost for what you get: power, hot and cold (safe to drink) water, rubbish disposal, waste water disposal, animals to feed, a walk to the glowworms, security, information about the local area and the rest of NZ and muffins, plus courteous, friendly service. We also try very hard to keep the facilities clean for all of our guests. We clean the main building in the morning, check it regularly through the day and clean it again at 11.30pm in the evening.

It's a MUST GO camp! Kids love it thoroughly and Chris and Barbara made us feel welcome. They never felt annoyed by the constant nagging by my children for more animal feeds for the animals. My kids had to be dragged when leaving after 2 nights stay. We had originally planned for only 1 night stay but it's such a lovely site with wonderful tracks nearby and the animals on site that made only 1 night too short! Facilities are clean and neat. Barbara and Chris were also eager to share what we could do near the camp. If you're not travelling with kids, you should stay at this site. If you have kids, the you MUST stay at this site!!
An aside, if you have very young kids, take it easy on the walk for glow worms. The path can be a little tricky when wet in the night.

Wow! Thank you for this lovely review. We loved the kids and they were so polite....didn't nag at all!! We have taken on board your comment about the track to the glow worms and we are trying to get it to a better standard so that it is not so tricky. We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in NZ and all the very best for a lovely Christmas and New Year! Kind Regards, Barbara and Chris

Just wow!! We had a great stay and felt very welcomed. We got three muffins at the check in, a ballon for our baby girl (kept her happy for a long time :-)) and food for the animals. The owner even took one of the rabbits out of the cage so that our baby could touch it. The facilities were very clean as well. Wifi was $5. Great place!

Hi Hanna and family,
Thank you for your lovely review. We are more than happy to take the rabbits out for the children to pat....that way they get to feel how soft and cuddly they are. The balloons are fun too...sometimes I think the parents enjoy them more than the kids!! We hope that all the rest of your travels go well....have a safe and happy journey! We spent two wonderful nights at this campsite and it was one of our favorites so far. The facilities were all great but it was the beautiful setting and the friendly owners that made it for us. The hot muffins on arrival were a lovely welcome and our baby loved feeding the animals and meeting the baby rabbits. The waterfall walk was lovely. Overall a great campsite, would definitely return.

We stayed here after coming off the ferry and had a warm welcome from the owner. Definitely appreciated the warm muffins on arrival! They give you pellets to feed to their pet farm animals. I recommend meeting Molly the pig, she is a real character. Showers, toilets and kitchen /lounge area are in good condition. Good pressure showers and no time limit which is always a bonus. The owner was very friendly and was happy to take the time to chat with us a bit. Highly recommended campsite if you like farm animals and a peaceful setting.

I could not rate this park more highly. Margaret's warm welcome (including a delicious basket of freshly made muffins) made us feel right at home instantly. The whole family enjoyed feeding the animals and the well marked glow worm/waterfall walk under a spectacular night sky will be a highlight of our trip for sure.
A lovingly cared for park, and the best we have come across so far.

Thanks especially for the warming log fire in the kitchen area which kept us warm during dinner :-) Bush walk at night to the glow worms was very special and fun for the kids.

Overall we really enjoyed our couple of days at the campground. Only downside was that we expected a 'real' farm with lots more animals and the kids able to experience 'farm life'.

Warm muffins on arrival is a lovely touch and an example of the professionalism with which this site is run.
Outstandingly clean facilities and a lovely family atmosphere. Spacious rural site. There is a small shop onsite however we didn’t use that. We did buy a copy of a recipe book that raises funds for a local school and it contains very good recipes.
There is a glow worm walk across the fields and through some bush to a waterfall. The bush section has low branches and rocks across a tricky path that were passable in the daylight but made us decide not to wait for dark and the glow worms. You’d need very powerful torches to avoid the risk of tripping or bashing into something on the way back 

We were welcomed with a warm muffin each, given some food to feed the animals on the farm, and a map showing the walk to the waterfall and glowworm glen.
Guests are encouraged to visit the animals, sheep, calves, a pig and a goat - we were also able to bottle feed the two new-born lambs, which was great!
Clean facilities, with washing machines and cooking facilities available.

The facilities really were of a high standard and yet also in keeping with the experience of being on a unique farm in the middle of the Charlotte Sounds.
